KEENE FILLY RUNS AWAY FROM HER COMPANY IN SPINAWAY STAKES. Mentha, Her Static Companion, Is Third Should Have Been Second Sanfara Makes the Easterners Take Notice They Want Her. Saratoga, N. Y., August S. The Famous Splnaway Stakesof $10,000 nt five and a half furlongs for two-year-old fillies was captured this afternoon by James It. Kcene's unbeaten Court Dress in Impressive style. Her opposition was numerically and in point of class the best of their age and sex that has competed in' a race this season. The flying daughter of Disguise and llampton Belle ran coupled with Mentha. She only recently recovered from an aggravated attack of bucked shins and her display of speed today was of the sensational order. She went away as if shot out of a catapult and nothing even got near enoligh to her to take the kink out of her neck. The success of the Keene colors in running first and third in the important race aroused great enthusiasm. It was recalled that the great racing establishment had won thus far this season all of the big two-year-old stakes. Mentha was unlucky in losing out for second place in a close finish, the jockey seemingly regarding the persistent attentions of John Sanford's Kennyetto too lightly. Aside from the big two-year-old feature the card was composed of five overnight races. The promised appearance of Inferno, the Canadian bred horse, was eagerly awaited. There were many commissions for this widely heralded crack and a wall, loud and long, went up when the opening odds about him were displayed. The majority of his backers were firmly convinced that the ring would hold the Havoc horse cheaply. Some enormous wagers at odds;on went in on him, however. Ills owner, j. E. Seagram, who was recently elected President of the Ontario Jockey Club, was present and the recipient of many congratulations after Inferno's victory. Sanfara came out of the west and vanquished good company, conceding weight all around, in the opening dash. J. J. O'Flaherty refused an offer of $8,000 for the fleet Ingoldshy three-year-old lcfore the race. After the race he could have sold her for $12,000. She Is entered in five stakes at the Shcepshead Bay fall meeting. Delcanta, after many disappointments, won a steeplechase over the short course. Experts said he was lucky in view of the mishandling, of Mackcy Dwyer. Jockey Dupee was hauled leforc the stewards to explain his ride. He stated that his riding orders were to hold the horse in check during the early running, reserving him for a quarter-mile end sprint. The Incident is considered closed. John A. Drake's fast horse Rebo ran off and hid in the mile selling race. The second choice Ebony was practically left at the post and finished an easy second. The Itobin Hood fiasco, in which the absence of that horse's customary hood adornment, was the cause of his running such a bad race, has aroused the stewards to action and hereafter trainers must furnish the information at the time of entry as to whether their horses will wear blinkers in their races, thus holding the trainer responsible. Glamor, Toddles, Kllliccrankie and Yankee Girl-were all cut down, more or less seriously, in the stake. Watergrass met the same fate in the first race. Sol Lichtenstcln, the noted bookmaker, was taken suddenly ill early in the afternoon and was removed to his home. A man with a imcket filled with matches sat down on them and they ignited. A big Hurry ensued and for a few minutes there was plenty of excitement among the women folks in the grandstand. An unusual happening was the absence of any clubhouse betting on the first race today. Fifty Disqualifications Thus Far This Year FIFTY DISQUALIFICATIONS THUS FAR THIS YEAR. There have been fifty disqualifications this year. This is fifteen less than the number ot horses set back from January 1 to August 8 last yenr. The greatest number of these disqualifications have occurred at Latonia. There were four each at Ascot Park, Oakland, City Park, Crescent Park and Fort Erie; three at Brighton Beach; two each at OaJilawn, Lexington, Memphis, Toronto and Windsor; one each at Bennlngs, Nashville, Pimllco Louisville, Belmont Park, Hamilton, Shcepshead Bay and Saratoga. Colonel Tarlton Says He Was a Better Horse Than Sysonby An Incident of His Career. , Cincinnati, O., August 8. Colonel L. P. Tarlton ran up from Ids farm near Frankfort one day last week to have a look at the racing. Colonel Tarlton was for many years one of the Latonia Judges. He comes from a racing family, his forbears having bred and raced horses in Kentucky and throughout the south as far back as 1S05. Colonel Tarlton Is himself an enthusiastic student of breeding, and few men are better posted on the history and tra- ditious of the turf than he. Knowing Colonel Tarl-ton's weakness, and his ability also as a "horse conversationalist," he had not been on the grounds long until some one started an argument as to the superiority of the horses of the present over those of earlier days. "I maintain, sir," said the colonel, "that we have scarcely any real racehorses nowadays. We have a lot of flash-In-the-pan performers that can run five or six furlongs, but when It comes to packing weight and going a journey at a fast pace they are not in it with the old-timers. " "Take for example such horses as Tom Bowling, Blue Eyes, Enquirer, Duke of Magenta, etc., not to mention Longfellow, Harry Bassett, Checkmate and others of that date; where are their equals now? We havn't got them. We don't breed that kind, or at least it is very seldom that we produce a horse that would rank witJi any of those named. The trouble Is that in, the craze for speed wc pay too little attention to Individuality. In order to j?ct the fashionable blood, we breed to gangling, awkward, spindle-legged brothers and sisters to famous English racehorses, and as a consequence our horses are deteriorating. I do not recall that we have imported more than four great horses, that is royally bred ones, that were at the same time great racehorses and horses of fine individuality, in the last twenty years, namely St. Blaise, Ormonde, Meddler, and Mr. Belmont's recent importation. Rock Sand. There's where the English have It all over us. They not only want blood in breeding, but they insist on racing quality and individuality as well." Asked as to the best racehorse he had ever seen, Colonel Tarlton replied: "Tom Bowling by all means. There was a real horse for you; carry any weight, go any route, and run you a record quarter In any part of the journey. His only fault was that he was a bad actor at the post. He was not a mean horse, just nervous and high strung. Among many of his great performances, I recall one race in partiuclar, that was the most remarkable that ever came under my observation. It was at Lexington. I was a stripping, just out of college. At that time the Kentucky Association was very exclusive and none but members of the club could hold any official position on the track. On this particular occaslou the starter was ill, or unable to attend to his duties for some reason or other, and some of the members asked me if 1 would tap the drum for them that day. I did not have much confidence in myself as a starter, but they insisted that I could do it all right, and so I told them I would. "As luck would have It Tom Bowling was a starter in a stake race at a mile and five-eighths, in which some eight or ten went to the post. Colonel Price McGrath had a big nigger that weighed over 200 pounds that always led Tom Bowling to the post and held him there until the start was made. On this occasion Colonel McGrath rode over to the post with me. Tom Bowling was unusually fractious and the nigger in order to control him took a double wrap on the chin strap. After skirmishing around for iositlon a little while Tom Bowling got straight and Colonel McGrath yelled 'Let 'cm go. I tapped the drum a'nd away the field went, but the nigger couldn't let loose of Tom Bowling quick enough, and the horso dragged him a hundred yards before he freed himself. Of course, everybody thought he was out of the race. But Just then something wonderful happened. Tom Bowling went on after his horses like a streak of lightning and before they had gone three furlong's he was in front of them. He stayed in front and won as he pleased. "For years afterwards just how fast Tom Bowling ran that first quarter was matter for argument around Lexington. They caught him all the way from 19 to 22 seconds. It seems Incredible to believe that any horse could run a quarter of a mile in 19 seconds, but if any horse ever could that one was Tom Bowling. He could carry his weight and did it and run a fast two mile race, and finish the last quarter in 24 seconds. None but a great horse can do that." Asked if Tom Bowling was as good a horse as Sysonby, Colonel Tarlton said: "I think he was a better horse than Sysonby. I think he was the best horse we have had since the time of Lexington. Of course, It is a difficult matter to compare horses of different eras, and besides on account .of Sysonby's early death we shall never know just exactly how good, ho was. But, in coon phrase, Tom Bowling 'done gone and showed what he could do. He was a sure enough racehorse." Colonel Tarlton's argument was not delivered without a touch of asperity here and there when remarks were Interjected, and sotto voice to some friends he remarked aside: "A lot of these people graduate from cigar stores into the racing game, and after a year's experience they think: they know it all. I like to take them down a peg or two once in a while." Talent Cannot Pick Them: Supporters of Favorites Have Another Bad Day at Latonia TALENT CANNOT PICK THEM. SUPPORTERS OF FAVORITES HAVE ANOTHER BAD DAY AT LATONIA. Miss Doyle and Collonade Their Only Two Douglas Park Officials Are Named Elastic Goes Back to the Corrigan Barn. Cincinnati, O., August 8. With the memory of thirteen favorites going down to defeat in fourteen races, the talent today resumed their onslaught against the books with do or die determination, only to be again grievously disappointed in their selections for the first two races. Miss Doyle afforded them slight consolation by winning the third at short odds, and so did Collonade in the fifth. Thereafter outsiders got most of the money. The defeats of Weberfields, Decklaw, Solon, Optional and St. Paris gave the bookmakers an exceptional chance to clean up, but their timidity cost them considerable. . With the absence of several layers who were willing at all times to handle a fair commission, the ring here at present is a joke. If a bettor desires to place a fair sized wager he is unable to get accommodated unless he. Is willing to accept a ridiculously short price for his money. The jumping race went to Dalesman in a spirited finish with Bluemint, which showed good form and forced the Bratton candidate to do his best to head him out in the final drive. Solon, coupled with Modredlaw and the mainstay of the Ferrlss entry, repeated the trick of his former start and bolted when he seemed the probable winner. Miss Doyle and .Collonade had it easy In their respective races. The latter might have been given a strong argument by Santon. but evidently his connections did not think the horse up to a bruising contest. He was given an easy race and Is no doubt qualifying, as Two Bells did from the same stable. Announcement was made today by John Hach-meister that A. W. Hamilton would be the presiding judge at Douglas Park. Martin Nathanson will will be associate judge, handicapper and racing secretary; A. B. Dade will do the starting. The judges today ordered that Elastic, recently claimed from Edward Corrigan by Thomas Saycrs, acting for Lcmp & Co., be returned to Mr. Corrigan on the ground that trainer Saycrs did not have the authority to claim the horse. George Taylor, who was considered among the foremost riders in this country In the late eighties, had the mount on Allinda in the fifth race. The younger generation clearly has It on him, at least in the matter of getting away .from the post. Morning Trials at Saratoga MORNING TRIALS AT SARATOGA. Saratoga, N. Y., August 8. Visitors to the course during the early morning hours are more numerous here than at any of the tracks in the vicinity of New York City. This is natural because the local course is more easily reached and, again, the majority of those who are here for the season have the leisure as well as the inclination to watch the trials of the horses. Among the two-year-olds, De Mund and Horace E., in the stable of Paul J. and Roy As Ralney, arc the most talked of and the most highly regarded. Both are in excellent condition and both have worked fast. De Mund has shown five furlongs ltetter than 1:00 and he did it easily. He is to carry the Ralney colors In the Saratoga Special. Pete Coyne has George J. Long's filly Altuda as fit as a fiddle. Al Powell is ready to race to his best form. Tom Welsh is sending Adam along regularly, but it is not known that he intends to race the sou of Flying Fox, which was brought over for stud purposes by Frank C. Bishop. Charles Edward has a fancy for the Saratoga course and should be wortliy of serious consideration when trainer Joyner makes up his mind to start him. Dalvay has dickey legs, but they do not seem to be troubling him just now. Henry McDanlel is handling him carefully and he should win a race before the end of the meeting. John E. Madden hasn't told any one what his notions are aliout Hammeraway, but the colt is ready and should be remembered. Mohawk II. is ready for the Travers Stakes Saturday. Oaklawn has been going along satisfactorily. Trainer Joyner, however, has made no announcement as to when he Is to start. King's Daughter, Toots Mook, Tiptoe, Vinton, Nemesis, Superman, Watergrass and Yankee Gun are all worth-remembering for the next time out. Accountant versus Ben Hodder ACCOUNTANT VERSUS BEN HODDER. Saratoga, N. Y., August 8. William Shields is being besieged with offers for his crack three-year-old Ben Hodder. The fact that The Commoner colt has two important stake engagements at this meeting, the Travers and the Derby, and that Shaw is reported to have said since he rode him yesterday that he was the best horse he had been astride this year, created a brisk competition for the youngster. "Diamond" Jim Brady, when he heard of the extravagant claims made on behalf of Ben Hodder, offered to bet $20,000 to $10,000 that his horse Accountant would beat the Shields colt at their first meeting. Shields wired his father the proposition and it is expected that the offer will be taken up by the plunging elder. Edenwold Farm is Sold EDENWOLD FARM IS SOLD. Nashville, Tenn., August 8. Edenwold, the stock farm near this city, owned by W. O. Parmer, has been sold to a local syndicate for $50,000, and will be cut up into town lots. Edenwold is the home of The Commoner and a band of good broodmares. Ram's Horn Dies at Sheepshead Bay: Son of Bute and Aunt Tessa Succumbs to Inflammation of the Bowels - His Record RAM'S HORN DIES AT SHEEPSHEAD BAY. Son of Bute and Aunt Tessa Succumbs to Inflammation of the Bowels His Record. New York, August 8. Ram's Horn, the four-year-old bay colt by Bute Aunt Tessa, died from Inflammation of the bowels at Sheepshead Bay track today. Ram's Horn was bred by James B. Haggin and was purchased for something like $230 by Captain Jim Williams at a sale of yearlings In Lexington, Ky., in December 1903. While he was under the eye of Captain Williams, he was ostensibly trained and raced in the name of W. S. Williams, the captain's son. The death of the colt will be a hard blow to the veteran Kentucky horseman. He has since Ram's Horn's days as a two-year-old at the Chicago tracks declared him the best racehorse he ever had anything to do with, even pronouncing him a better horse than was Luke Blackburn, which he sold to the Dwyers as a two-year-old. Last winter at the St. Charles Hotel in New Orleans Captain Williams was offered $30,000 for Ram's Horn. Morris L. Hayman, acting for Senator P. H. McCarren, made the offer, which was not entertained. Ram's Horn may have been the best western horse of the present year. He was not a fortunate horse. Sickness and mischances of one sort and another marred his career, 'but when thoroughly at his best he was undoubtedly a grand racer. He was richly bred, very fast, a weight carrier of high degree and a stayer. The two greatest performances markinng his career were his successes in the Montgomery Handicap of last year and the Brighton Handicap of this year. In the Montgomery he easily vanquished the best handicap horses of the west, gave them all weight, won in a canter and broke the track record. He was a remarkable three-year-old that day, but went amiss immediately after the race. In the Brighton Handicap he scored a notable achievement when he ran a mile and a quarter in 2:03?, one of the fastest performances on record at the distance, very few horses having ever run faster than 2:0-1. His death Is a heartbreaking misfortune to Captain Jim Williams, who has always insisted he was a much greater racer than the records show him to be. His record Is as follows: Year. Sts. 1st 2nd. 3d. Un. Amt. 1904 19 10 3 4 2 $ 4.92G 1903 .13 5 4 2 2 9,266 100G 11 5 2 0 4 27,075 Totals 43 20 9 C 8 $41,2C7 Clay Sells Contest and Running Water CLAY SELLS CONTENT AND RUNNING WATER. Saratoga, N. The intended feature of the card was a handicap at six and one-lisilf furlongs, but It was declared off on account of the numerous scratches. The finishes in four out of the six races were close and exciting. Some delay was occasioned In the fourth race when it was found that Grace Curtis had failed to show up at the proper time. The money was refunded to those who bet on the mare and other bets were allowed to stand. - . Saratoga's New Jumps Are Safe SARATOGA'S NEW JUMPS ARE SAFE. Saratoga, N. Y., August S. The jumps in the steeplechase course here have been reconstructed and there Is general praise for them. They are now all banks topped with brush with light round poles at the base and top as guides. This does away with the old complaints of flying timbers, as the poor jumpers lilt the fences, and will certainly tend to reduce materially the number of accidents. The cross country delegation here Is greater than It has been In years, and anything that can be done to Improve this grade of the sport will be done. .. Walker is Stricken with Appendicitis WALKER IS STRICKEN WITH APPENDICITIS. Saratoga. N. Y., August S. Charles Walker has just undergone an operation for appendicitis at one of the local hospitals. Walker, In the old days of Guttenberg and Clifton, owned a formidable stable. Now or Never, which won a number of Important races on the big tracks, being one of the string that carried his colors. When he gave up his stable he gave his entire attention to warmups and so keen a judge did he become that he has for years been able to pick winners enough to bring lilni a comfortable income. Keene Suing: Not Being Sued KEENE SUING; NOT BEING SUED. Saratoga, N. Y., August S. The statement emanating from Lexington, Ky., that some mares owned by J. 0. Kcene were to be sold at sheriff's sale to satisfy a judgment for $375 against the well-known horseman brings forth a protest from the latter. Mr. Keene says that he has no interest In these horses except for their keep. They belong to Dr. Henry Cook of New York. Keene took care of tliem ami In turn passed thein over to Mr. Cassidy, the man who is suing for both his bill and Keene's. Refuse Entries from Algonquin Stable REFUSE ENTRIES FROM ALGONQUIN STABLE. Saratoga, N. Y., August S. The stewards of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association have announced that In the future the entries of the horses racing in the name of the Algonquin stable would le refused. No reasons were given for the ruling, but It is understood that it Is a case of explaining ownership. Tom Cogan ran and won in the name of this stable at Brighton on Saturday. Diamond Jubilee in His New Home DIAMOND JUBILEE IN HIS NEW HOME. New York, August S. The safe arrival of the famous race horse Diamond Jubilee at Buenos Ay res is announced in cablegrams. The horse, for which Senor Ignacio Corroas paid King Edward VII. $150,000, arrived on the steamer Nile yesterday and was sent to Haras Ojo de Agua, the establishment of Ills new owner.
