XII. yp. 190. CHICAGO, FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 1906. PRICE 5 CESTTS Neva Lee Fails Backers: Poor Judgment of Her Jockey Probably Spoils a Tremendous Coup NEVA LEE FAILS BACKERS. POOR JUDGMENT OF HER JOCKEY PROBABLY SPOILS A TREMENDOUS COUP. Sir Lynnowood, However, Equals the American Seven Furlongs Record in Defeating Her Running Water Wins the Alabama Stakes. Saratoga, N. Y., August 0. An attempted killing on a large scale failed to go through with Neva Lee in the first race today. ' The fleet filly had been skillfully and patiently manipulated in an effort to beat the handicappor and the official fell for It to the extent of assigning the beautiful daughter of El Rio Itey, a feather impost of 102 pounds, as against 119 pounds on Graziallo in a handicap at seven furlongs. On the lest and most reliable recent form the weights carried by these two should Iiave been reversed. But the god of chance stepped in and spoiled tlds elaborately planned coup. Unfortunate at the start and ridden with colossal stupidity by C. .Miller, Neva Lee succumbed right at the end of a heart breaking, as well as record breaking, seven furlongs to both Sir Lynnewood and Inquisitor, when, had she been intelligently handled at the start, the westerner could not have lost. The time, l:24i, equalled the American record made by Halifax at Sheepshead Bay In June. Walter Miller, who rode Inquisitor, heat the barrier and, making the most of it, proceeded to force a killing "pace. C. Miller, the little jockey, who on the other hand got away poorly with Neva Lee, went into such an immediate and strenuous pursuit of the flying leader that he passed him at the end of five furlongs. The filly was timed separately In 37g seconds. I Every book in the ring was deluged witli wagers k on the good thing which went wrong. Every poolroom in the country shared the same experience, likewise numerous handbooks. Charley Gates' commission alone was $15,000. One record wager with William Cowan was $24,000 to $8,000. J. A. Drake fell for $10,000. There were hundreds who bet $1,000 and over, all directed by the same mysterious hand. Estimates vnry as to the amount Neva Lee's hackers would have won had she been successful. Some say $500,000. However, $150,000 undoubtedly approximated the real sum. The historic Alabama Stakes for three-year-old fillies was the magnet of attraction today and a crowd equal in proportion to that which attended the opening day was present to see Andrew Miller's splendid new purchase, Running Water, win a fast race with superlative ease from the others. Brook-dale Nymph, Comedienne and Belgravia. The time, l:52j, stamps it a sparkling performance. The steeplechase over the short course developed into an exciting affair. Allegiance proved the steadiest of the unruly and erratic members engaged and won outright at the end. Glengate, the heavily hacked favorite, made a bad mess of it, nearly falling early in the race and then taking the' post that marked the course on the first turn along with him in his wild career. Rodrock, the unlucky rider, finally pulled up and limped back to the scales with a badly bruised left leg. Champ Elysees, the leader for nearly the entire distance, qualified handsomely for more important engagements at this sport. "Big Bill" Knapp's vigorous and persistent efforts on Flowaway, the favorite in the two-year-old selling race at five and a half furlongs, were rewarded with success over the poorly ridden Big Store. Woolwich, another favorite at profitable odds, signalized ids transfer to a new owner by winning nearly all the way in the mile selling from the Inadequately handled Yorkshire Lad. Frankie O'Neill sold Woolwich just before the race to W. A. Mc-Klnney for $2,000. The Belmont castofl was entered to be sold for $800. J. D. Odom, owner of Angler, bid him up to $2,000, McKInney retaining him for an additional $5. The big field had no terrors for the hackers of Victoria B. in the closing race for maiden two-year-olds, at five and a half furlongs. Mr. Long's filly is notor!6usly a bad breaker and as a receding favorite was left at the post when Koerner rode her In her preceding race at Brighton, but she was In a different humor today. Backed at a ridiculously short price she came out of the ruck with incredible speed and pursued the pacemaker so persistently that she caught and passed him In the stretch as If he was anchored. It is not likely that General Sanford will contribute Caughnawaga to the Jockey Club's breeding bureau, for two reasons. General Sanford is not certain good results will be got by the farmers through the introduction of thoroughbred blood into their every-day work horses, and he wants Caughnawaga for Hurricana Farm. The General realizes that "Old Cock" did not have as much early speed as the average stallion retired to the stud these days. But he believes him to have been one of the games t and truest racers that ever wore saddle. The progeny of Caughnawaga and some fleet Laureate and Potomac mares, General Sanford believes, will race as fast and far as horses are asked to go. Jockey Jost Receives Internal Injuries: Bad Spill in Sixth Race at Latonia - Wee Lass Should Have Won Handicap JOCKEY JOST RECEIVES INTERNAL INJURIES. : Bad Spill in Sixth Race at Latonia Wee lass Should Have Won Handicap, Cincinnati, 0., August 9. Racing Secretary .Davis offered a program at Latonia today that would have kept that proverbial Philadelphia lawyer guessing. It was made up of ordinary selling and condition races, with a free handicap of six furlongs thrown in by way of diversion. This latter race had only four acceptances, but all of them were so weighted that a choice was difficult. Wee Lass was made the favorite, and Devout and Alcor, also heavily backed. Wee Lass should have won, as she was much the best, but a stupid ride on the part of E. Rice caused her to lose by a narrow margin in a furious last seventy yards drive with Devout. Had Rice gone about his business and stayed close to the Inner rail, Wee Lass would have been a handy winner. NIcol rode Devout, also won on Airship and Barkelmore. There was an accident in the sixth race which may be attended by fatal results. Jost sustained Internal injuries when Capltano fell. He was removed to a local hospital. J. Daly escaped with a shaking up when Creel fell. How the mishap occurred has not been fully determined. Close observers, however, say that NIcol, on Airship, was mostly at fault. Oak Grove was much the best and, hut for the Interference, might have been an easy winner. Willie betting was In progress on the sixth race the owners of Toppy Girl asked permission of the judges to withdraw her on account of lameness. The permission was granted, and twenty minutes additional time allowed for a new hook. C. C. McCafferty bid up Demo, winner of the second race, $400 over her entered price of a like amount. She was retained. Considerable excitement occurred prior to the running of the first race when trainer Denny indulged in a flgh't with one of the Plnkerton police. The fuss was about the showing of a badge, and almost precipitated a riot before the belligerents were parted. Five horses owned by Alvey & nenderson were shipped today to Louisville where they will be rested until the beginning of the Douglas Park meeting. Jockey C. Morris was fined $23 by the starter for disobedience at the post. Capitano was badly Injured by his fall and will probably have to be given a long rest. J. C. Ferriss, Jr., has decided to bring suit in a civil court for the amount he claims due from J. G. Mitchell for the transfer of Class Leader. Tennessee Turfmen Will be Prepared: Will Not Sit Idly by When the next Anti-Racing Bill is Introduced TENNESSEE TURFMEN WILL BE PREPARED. Will Not Sit Idly By When the Next Anti-Racing Bill Is Introduced. Cincinnati, 0., August 9. At the close, of the meeting here Presiding Judge Macfarlan will go to Memphis to look after the affairs of thir'New Memphis Jockey Club, and will probably return as, Mr. Price's associate In the stand at the Churchill Downs fall meeting. The City of Memphis is building a boulevard 150 feet wide that passes along the front of - Montgomery Park, and to which the New Memphis Jockey Club donated fifty feet of ground. This will entail the removal of fences and buildings and will require Mr. Macfarlan's attention for a time. Mr. Macfarlan has no doubt hut that a successful short fall meeting could be held at Memphis, say of two weeks duration, but he does not anticipate that the New Memphis Jockey Club will attempt to break into the fall game in the near future. "Our spring meetings are attractions of more than local interest," said Mr. Macfarlan. "There is a lot of local pride In our spring meetings, and we do not want to overdo the thing. We are content to let well enough alone." A prominent Tennessee racing man who was recently a visitor to Latonia said he thought it almost a certainty that turf interests in that state woud have another contest on their hands when the Legislature meets this winter. "The people who engineered the anti-racing law that has since been declared unconstitutional are on record that they will introduce another bill this winter. What the nature of It Is I do not know. The former bill was allowed to slip through at the eleventh hour. This lime we shall be prepared for atttacks on thoroughbred Interests and believe that we can control the situation down our way." 'A state election tills fall in Tennessee may have some bearing on racing matters there. All Favorites Are Beaten at Fort Erie ALL FAVORITES ARE BEATEN AT FORT ERIE. Buffalo, N. Y., August 9. Encouraged by the success of the favorites at Fort Erie yesterday, a good crowd crossed the border today only to see the six first choices beaten. The feature race was the steeplechase. Jockey Hogg was compelled to cancel his engagements today on account of illness. Jockey A. Martin is also on the sick list. Babe B, the Latest Suspect at Latonia Identification Owners Score a Coup. Cincinnati, O., August 9. Ever since the Aimless Sarah Black ringing affair at Detroit, western racing officials have been exceedingly vigilant and alert as to the Indentificatlon of unknown horses. A good illustration of the many safeguards employed agaiust the ringing gentry was well shown when Babe B. recently won here at odds of 30 to 1. This Is a 'three-year-old chestnut filly, by Pontine Madc-lalne, with a blaze face and peculiar leg markings. She ran at the Denver meeting, winning two races in good time, and then was brought here. She had worked well since her arrival, and so when she made her first start about two weeks ago the workwatchers, were on hand and backed her from aii outside price' to 7 to 1. Getting away badly she ran a poor race. She was started again a few days later, hut there was no activity in the betting ring, and again she ran a poor race. Rice rode her In both these starts, and in both she was identified by horsemen who had seen her at Denver, . Paddock Judge Ljies requiring the trainer to remove the bandages from her legs. When the Ally won, a few days later, the judges hesitated about making the placing official until they had called for the identification papers. There seems to be no question but that the race was regular In all respects, but Hennessy & Welsh who own the filly certainly displayed a smart lilt of strategy, for they and their connections backed her heavily in the handbooks and poolrooms throughout the country, and no little surprise was occasioned that the judges should have allowed so glaring a form, reversal to pass unnoticed. Montrealers Become Owners MONTREALERS BECOME OWNERS. Saratoga, N. Y., August 9. Among the most recent and desirable recruits to the turf are some of Montreal's most prominent business men. Barton McLennan, whose colors dark blue and yellow cross' sashes were carried Tuesday by Agent and by Belligerent, is a member of the Montreal Hunt. He is president of the Montreal Transportation Company. W. W. Oglhie, whose colors have also been seen here. Is of the famous Ogiiive Milling Company, one of the largest In the world. He is also a member of the Montreal Hunt. George R. Hooper is another well-known Montrealer who has recently become an owner and these are sure to be followed by young men of equal caliber, for Montreal has the" turf fever badly and the sight of a fine new racing plant going up has awakened such a keen interest In the thoroughbred that the city will soon be a worthy rival of Toronto as a turf-loving center. James' Carrutliers, who is probably the best known turfman from Montreal and who is here, says that his stallion, the Rayon d'Or horse Kilogram, has served twenty mares this season in Montreal. "They are all trying to breed a candidate for the Queen's Plate, which will be one of the features of the Montreal Jockey Club's meetings," said he, today. "Good mares are being shipped up there and a great improvement in the breed of horses- in eastern Canada is bound to Ik; the result." Mr. Carruthers says that there are now over 300 men at work on the track and buildings, and that the first shipment of steel for the grandstand lias arrived. All the other buildings, are Hearing completion. , Sir Lynnewood's Turf History SIR LYNNEWOOD'S TURF HISTORY. Sir Lynnewood, the five-year-old black son of Sir Dixon anil, Lady Wayward, by Virgil, which ran seven furlongs in 1:24$, under the colors of J. E. Widener at Saratoga yesterday, equalling the American record set by Halifax at Sheepshead Bay, was bred, by Colonel E. F. Clay at Paris, Ky. Mr. Widener bought him as a yearling at the sale in Sheepshead Bay paddocks on June 3, 1002, paying $3,000 for hiin. Incidentally, he was the star of that day's sale. He was not raced as a two-year-o'l(L lie .made his first start in a race for maiden three-yvar-olds a Brooklyn, on. May 27, jyW, flft I ishlng second to Ancestor, which beat him a nose over the about three-quarters of a mile course" in 1:11. Of that .race Daily Racing Form said in its chart note: "Sir Lynnewood held a forward position to the stretch, where he closed up with a rush, ran a great race and may prove a good one." By ills performance yesterday. If on no other occasion, he has verified that claim for him,, hut Sir Lynnewood has never leen a sensation among the racegoers. He has been what we are wont to call a bad-luck horse, though his earnings might have lieon greater had be been better placed. Matt Feakes, who gave him his first lessons in racing, however. Is a conservative trainer. In his three years on the turf Sir Lynnewood has made twenty-two starts and won only three races, one each year. He may have paid for himself through the pool'box on the occasions of these victories, but not otherwise. His winnings aggregate only $2,960. He 'won his first race at Sheepshead Bay, on September 7, 100-1, running the mile in 1:4. 1J, with 112 pounds up and under a pull all the way. Here is a record of his performances: Year. Recently the committee ruling Doneaster -Town Moor, where the St. Leger is annually run, asked the Jockey Club for time for an additional meeting to lie held at a time to be fixed, by the Jockey Club. Vacant racing days' arc unknown in England; the Jockey Club is essentially conservative and dislikes clashes. The request was- accorded scant courtesy and of the result of Its proffer London Sporting Life says: "We learn that not only did the Jockey Club refuse the Doneaster Race Committee permission to hold' an additional meeting, but at the same time suggested "that the St. 'Leger should be put upon the same basis as the Derby. The latter race Is of the guaranteed vaiiie of X0.500, but there is no such condition attached to the St. Leger, in "which owners race solely for their own money, nothing whatever being added to the amount sub-serllicd. What will ultimately be done has not yet transpired, but it Is lielleved the committee will carry out the Jockey Club's suggestion." Some Things Worth Remembering SOME THINGS WORTH REMEMBERING. Saratoga, X. Y., August 9. Kim Patterson has Hot Toddy In excellent condition just now and will be worth remembering the next time out. Tanya is moving along excellently fou trainer Rogers. Billy Karrick has Bob Roy n'liout ready for a good race. John Huggins Is handling Royal Sceptre in a manner which indicates that he will be heard from before long. John' McBridc is showing improvement under the eye of j. W- Fuller. Vox Popu'll is ready. Trainer Rowc thinks a good deal of this one; Gretna Green is not being hurried. Geranium Is ready and is 'worth serious consideration the next time she carries J. Grant Lyman's colors. Gibson, in the McDowell barn, is doing all that Is asked of him. Chaseaway is improving wonderfully. Vaquero Will not remain long among the maidens. Work and Play is worth, while when Billy Karrick scuds him to the post. So Is Gold Lady. ' Penalty of the Rogue's Badge PENALTY OF THE ROGUE'S BADGE. In England hereafter unruly horses are to receive scanter consideration, in token whereof the all powerful Jockey Club has promulgated the following edict: "The stewards of the Jockey Club give notice that persons intending to run their horses In blinding hoods must first obtain permission from the stewards of the meeting to do so. These horses are to be treated as unruly horses, and the starter is' to use his discretion In placing them (as under Rule 13S)." Was the Bush Intentionally Fired WAS THE BUSH INTENTIONALLY. FIRED! The latest Information from London Is to the effect that Danny Maher will be able to resume riding within a fortnight. Beyond the paiu attending a badly bruised left shoulder he is suffering no inconvenience and is able to be about. Ills mount, Horn Head, shied at a burning bush near the track side and it Is now claimed that the bush was fired by persons who teslrcd injury to the American jockey for pecuniary reasons. The officials at Brighton are prosecuting an investigation of these charges. Laudeman Likes the Eastern Game LAUDEMAN LIKES THE EASTERN GAME. Cincinnati, O., August 9. W. II. Laudeman, who has been booking at the New York tracks since the early spring, is here for a brief stay. "Racing In the east this year has been good," said be, "and the attendance has been marvelous. The largest crowd I ever saw on a racetrack was at Belmont Park on Decoration Day. I have not made much money this year, but when a fellow can hold his own these days he is doing well." Jockey Williams' Injuries Prove Fatal JOCKEY WILLIAMS' INJURIES PROVE FATAL. New York, August 9.
