XII. 3sTO. 191. CHICAGO, SATURDAY, AUGUST 11, 1906. PRICE 5 CENTS Horace E. Loses at Odds - On: Great Western Colt is Short and Tires at the End of Half a Mile HORACE E.LOSES AT ODDS-ON GREAT WESTERN COLT IS SHORT AND TIRES AT THE END OF HALF A MILE. Conville, tho Winner, Is Much. Admired Rainey Brothers Lose Heavily Fail to Get Even hy Sacking: Anna May Ravena's Fast Race. Saratoga, X. Y., August 10. At the Saratoga race course this afternoon in the presence ot 15,000 expectant spectators, Horace E. sustained a crushing defeat, Both Conville and Purslane easily took the measure of the famous western colt in a purse race at live and one-half furlongs, run in the fast time of 1:001. The downfall of the most talked of two-year-old of the year created a tremendous sensation and was the stile topic of conversation for the remainder of the afternoon. "Hub" May, his k trainer, was tumble to explain away the solitary Instance of a failure on the part of the son of-! Baunockhurn to run up to his real form, or account for the absence of the stamina he has heretofore displayed In both public and private trials. Horace K.'s linal preparation was live furlongs in 591 seconds, done early in the week. He was a beaten horse at a half today, run In much slower time. The Ralneys wagered a fortune on their crack at odds of 1 to :t. Anna May was the unsuccessful medium of another heavy backing in the hist race In an effort made by the gamey Clevelanders to get out on the day. Conville, Thomas Hitchcock Jr.'s son of Dieudonne and Gualala, was pronounced by William (). It. Macdonough, of California, to be the most perfect specimen of a thoroughbred bo had ever seen, always excepting his own Ormonde, now dead, and much resembled Gualala, the dam, which was the most highly prized mare owned by the late Marcus Daly. Frank O'Neill, the former jockey, saddled Conville and was named on the program as his trainer. The youngster Is owned jointly by Thomas Hitchcock, Jr. and J. K. .Madden, and was bought last spring at Belmont Park for $7,500. His weight in the Futurity is lift pounds and Frank O'Neill will have the unusual honor, for so young a man, of preparing hint for the great Sheepshead Bay race. ltavomi inaugurated a brilliant day's sport by cantering off with the six furlong sprint in 1:12, thereby establishing a new track record. The former mark, 1:121, was held by Chuctanunda, also a product of the Uurricana Stud, jointly with Ingohl. Tipping, one of the extreme outsiders, showed a meritorious performance in the mile selling that followed, the time, 1:39, being the fastest of the present meeting, and tills by a maiden and in a selling race of the cheapest variety. ' Kiamesha had only an exercise gallop to van quish the lot opposed to her in the mile handicap, fourth on the card. Mr. Knapp's great mare ran in quite her old-time record-breaking form and looms up an important factor in the stakes to which she Is eligilde at this meeting. J. A. Drake's old war horse, Runnels, of supposed doubtful stamina, easily took the mile and three-sixteenths, outclassing his competitors. He pulled up lame. In the last, at live and a half furlongs, Miller warmed up by nursing the hitherto non-staying Revenue home in fast time. She broke away from her attendants while being saddled for this race and jumped the fence In her wild chase into the field. W illie Shields bought Ilolscher from J. 15. Brady today for $1,000, and the disappointing Lamplighter three-year-old, which cost his former owner $7,000 last fall, ran" in Ills new owner's colors in the fifth race, in which he was backed for a killing. Nine Named to Go in Saratoga Special: Information About the Youngsters Who Should Produce a Fast Race at the Spa Today NINE NAMED TO GO IN SARATOGA SPECIAL. Information About the Youngsters Who Should Produce a Fast Race at the Spa Today. Tho Saratoga Special, the big "jack pot" race for two-year-olds, is to have its sixth running at the Spa today. In tills race the winner takes It all. There is nothing to the second nnd third horses. The conditions of the race are these: "The Saratoga Special for two-year-olds. By subscription of $1,000 each, half forfeit. A piece of gold plate to the value of $2,r00 to lie added by the association. Subscribers to name three horses by May 1, and only one starter to be named for each subscription. Six furlongs." On March 5, when the entries were closed for the Saratoga Racing Association's stakes, it was found that nineteen subscriptions had been taken. Newton Bennington, James It. Keene, Paul J. Rainey and Harry Payne Whitney took two each and August Belmont, W. Harry Brown, Louis A. Cella, Herman B. Duryea, Frank J. Furrell. Francis K. Hitchcock, John B. Madden, Andrew Miller, John Sanford, Sydney Paget and R. T. Wilson, Jr., took one each. On May 1 the horses to represent the subscriptions were named as follows: August Belmont Don Enrique, Rosemount,, Glamor. Newton Bennington (No. 1). The Mikado, Sir Toddington. Waterbury. (No. 2). De Mtind, Pau-monok. Judge Post. W. Harry Brown Elfall, Pennrrls, Salvidere. L. A. Cella Ben Strong, Miss Strome, Tlvollnl. II. B. Duryea Prince Fortuuatus, Prince Hampton. Ramrod. V. J. Farrell Joe Cassidy, Kernochan, Sea Water. F. R. Hitchcock Farceur, Fantastic. Mitre. James R. Keene (No. 1). Grlmaldl, Superman, Peter Pan. (No. 2). Philander, Gretna Green, Ballot. J. K. Madden Faust, Golf Ball. Bat Masterson. Andrew Miller (Newcastle Stable) McCartcr, Conjecture, Saracenesca. Sydney Paget Charles Edward, Water Fearl, Ruby Light. John Sanford Rockstone, Flint Hill, Sir William Johnson. Paul J. Rainey (No. 1). Anna May, Prattle, Belfast. (No. 2). King Castle. Voluntary. Vervane. H. P. Whitney (No. 1). Westbury, Dinna Ken. Cornelia filly. (No. 2). Littleton Maid, Fads and Fancies, Marathon. It. T. Wilson, Jr. Aletheuo, Pendarvels, Grand Vedette. When Newton Bennington sold De Mund to Paul J. Rainey for $45,000 the subscription In 'which he was named went with him, and that gave Rainey three subscriptions, though long ago It was known that two of them would not lie represented. At the recent sale of W. H. Brown's two-year-olds Frank O'Neill bought Penarris and likewise the subscription to the Special. But he soon found that Penarris would hardly do for such a race. Then Salvidere. which had been bought out of the same sale by Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., proved his value. The new owner, who originally had taken no subscription, but bad acquired one through the partnership arrangement with John E. Madden in Golf Ball, sought out O'Neill and purchased the 1 Brown subscription for Salvidere. This completes the list of transfers. Iiy the use of the entire nineteen subscriptions taken, the race could have had nineteen starters and could have been worth $10,000 to the winner, in addition to the $2,000 In gold plate, but this is not to be. Only nine subscriptions, it appears from the entries, are to be represented, though it is possible to add others up to forty-five minutes before the race is run. With the nine horses named starting and no others added, the race will be worth to the winner $14,000 in money and $2,500 in gold plate, the starters paying $1,1)00 each and the subscriptions not represented by a starter paying;' $500 each. Since there are no penalties and allowances In the conditions of the race, the starters will carry the scale weights for age, which are 122 pounds for colts and 11!) pounds for fillies and geldings. The nine youngsters named to start arc: Herman B. Duryea's b. c, Prince Fortunatus, by Handspring Mon Droit. Francis It. Hitchcock's br. f, Fantastic, by Galore Phantom Belle. Thomas Hitchcock. Jr.'s ch. g, Salvidere, by Bel-videre Sallle of Navarre. Thomas Hitchcock, Jr.'s h. c, Golf Ball, by Plaudit Gutta Perelia. James R. Keene's b. c, Peter Pan, by Commando Cinderella. James It. Sobell had been recently susK'iided for incompetency, but Ills plea for another chance met with favor and he was given permission to ride today. Pirate's Dance ran In si forward position for the first round of the Held, lier stahlemate leading. Thereafter she liegan tiring and was lagging when the others approached the last obstacle in the lield. She blundered at this fence and fell heavily, horse and rider rolling for a considerable distance. The filly finally got up and scampered off apparently uninjured; Sobell, however, lay motionless and remained unconscious when aid reached him. He was taken to the Jockeys' room where examination disclosed that his nose was almost torn from his face and his lower Hp was mashed to a pulp, his left eye also disclosed a severe injury and blood was gushing from a wound in his head. Still In an unconscious condition, Sobell was removed to 'the hospital where jockey .Tost, who was injured yesterday, lingers In a dangerous condition. Class Leader also fell, but his rider escaped injury with a slight shaking up. Today's card was a good one and the results were lienelicial to form followers, first and second choices almost dividing the card. Meadowbreeze took the purse In the feature race in commanding style from Miss Doyle and Alma Dufour. The latter was favorite, hut evidently her recent trip to Buffalo and her shipment back has taken some of her good form away and she ran a dull race. Six Shooter, which at one time around Chicago -was considered among the top Hoteliers in the handi-ctfp division, and many stake victories to Ids credit, was In with a lot of cheap selling platers, all to le sold for $400. The books took liberties with lilnt. Evidently they were of the opinion that the Jiorse would sulk, but Six Shooter was In a running tnood today, spreadeagled the others when he got to the stretch turn and won In a common canter. It was stated that ills connections profited little by Ills victory. T. J. Nicol purchased Helmuth ln-fore the racing Iwgan. and saw his brother bring the new acquisition home before twelve other youngsters that traveled over the live furlong route in the first race. . Jockey Nicol followed up his success by winning on Frank Bill nnd In the sixth race scored another victory on .Mansard. .1. F. Haley, an old time rare rider, and for a nfjuilier of years a follower of western race courses, died here this morning. H. Thomassen, one of the edd school of trainers, died last night. Subscriptions by horsemen to defray expenses for both burials were numerous. He would have won "had" the distance been a few yards further. De Oro raced as If short, thus Edward Wilder was enabled to get third money. Brady says Oiseau will -be a starter In the Great Republic, which is to lie decided a week from Saturday. The son of Onms, which took second placv in the Great Republic of last year at the heels of Sysonby and In front of Broomstick, will make bis 1000 debut in an overnight handicap next Tuesday. Oiseau lias been carefully handled by trainer Matt Allen and Mr. Brady says he Is In excellent condition. Tuesday's race will be Olseau's public trial for the Great Republic, and If he shows well he may be-post favorite a week from tomorrow. Metropolitan turf folk have tlie highest opinion of the racing capacity of this Tennessee bred four-year-old.. If It had not been his misfortune to have come out lu the year that produced Sysonby he would have today been known as one of the smartest three-year-olds the American turf ever produced, and he would be one of the greatest eastern money winners. Cliaseaway, on the inside and away slowly and shut off, closed a big gap and was going gamely at the end under punishment. Redgaimtle't suffered from crowding at the start and came fast from the rear in an extra good effort. Sir William.
