HITCHCOCK GELDING KTINS A REMARKABLE RACE FOR THE SARATOGA "JACK POT." Travers Stakes Is Won Easily by Gallavant Mohawk II. Not Ready Miller Pilots Four Winners Ginette's Easy Victory. Saratoga, X. Y., August 11. Salviilore, Thomas Hitchcock-, Jr's. great two-year-old gelding by Bel-vldere, out of Sallle of Navarre, vanquished seven brilliant colts of his own age in the Saratoga Special at six furlongs this "afternoon in the presence of 20,000 spectators. The race was worth $12,500 net and a piece of gold plate valued at $2,500. The manner of his winning, under well nigh impossible conditions, in the fast time of 1:12?, combined with the 110 pounds carried, stamps him an absolutely high class horse. Such, at least, is the opinion entertained by the horsemen present who witnessed the symmetrical chestnut's marvelous display of speed, courage and stamina. The start found Salvidere next to the inside rail and unprepared. Charles Edward, boring over, forced him to pull up. A little further ou Ballot subjected him to similar treatment. In the meantime De Mund bad established a fifteen lengths' lead orer the sorely-tried favorite. A half mile from home the task of cutting down the pacemaker's Immense lead seemed absolutely hopeless. Salvidere kept at it, however, Und when coming up rapidly on the last turn Ballot a second time got in his way,- forcing him out. This time the excitement grew intense, and bis backers gave up hope, but the wonderful youngster was not to be denied, and coining along through the stretch with the power of a steam engine, he Hashed by McCarter, which was under the whip and left him as if lie bad been tied to the fence. It was a magnificent performance and thrilled the spectators as no other race lias done this esason. The sedate victor was given an ovation on bis return to the scales, the cheering lasting fully three minutes. This makes the third winner that John El Madden has trained and saddled for today's big juvenile "jack-pot," the other two being' Irish Lad and Aristocracy. Only three colts accepted for the historic Travers Stakes at a mile and a quarter. Track conditions caused Willie Shields to withdraw his crack colt Ben Hodder at the last moment, leaving only Mohawk II.. Gallavant and Reldmoore to face the .starter. Gallavant was taken, more seriously by the speculators on account of his well-known partiality or the muddy going and he justified their confidence by coining away from the mighty Mohawk II. at the end of a terrific mile struggle. That the latter was palpably short and would easily reverse this running was the general opinion after the race. Walter Miller Is again in the good graces of the public. He just missed duplicating his feat of riding five winners out of five mounts today. He was successful on four of them Gillette, Gallavant, .T. C. Core and Geranium, also bringing McCarter, one of the extreme outsiders in the Special, in second place at profitable odds. 'Charles T. Henshall's little French mare Ginctte, had only an exercise gallop to win the seven fur- J longs opener in 1:25. Observers declared that she could easily have established a new record at the distance without half trying. As usual the cross-country affair was a potent attraction. A representative field started for the rich North American Steeplechase over the full course. Hylas, the Hitchcock entry, was forward In the betting, but failed to sustain his reputation as a long distance performer, being easily taken into camp by both Alfar and Deleanta. Kassil was ojng much the easiest of all when he blundered and bis jockey spilled nt the Liverpool. Owens, who rode Delcanta, claimed foul against Alfar. It was not allowed. .T. C. Core, which was known to have held his stable mate, McCarter, safe in their last trial, was the successful medium of a plunge in the fifth at odds-on. Frank Brown "boosted" him from $1,500 to $3,000. The stable saved him with an additional S5 Geranium was never out of a canter to beat The Picket, Corrigan, Sir Ralph and Sailor Boy in the last race. . .Tockevs Pickett and G. Burns were both set down foe a week by the starter. Gold Run Wins Fort Erie Feature GOLD RUN. WINS FORT ERIE FEATURE. Buffalo, N. Y., August 11. A large half-holiday crowd was at Fort Erie today. The Grand Canadian Steeplechase Handicap and a handicap at a mile and an eighth were the magnets. The nine books had plenty to do in handling the money offered and they kept most of It. La Gloria was the only pronounced favorite to win and it was an eyelash finish with Fair Calypso which raced with her from the head of the stretch. The Grand Canadian Steeplechase Handicap went to Gold Run, the neglected outsider, with Dr. Nowlin finishing second six lengths back. Gold Run showed great speed on the flat, but fenced badly. Trenct the Mere, the second choice, unseated his rider In going over the sixteenth jump. M. J. Winn, president of the American Turf Association, was a visitor at Fort Erie today. He will remain in Buffalo several days, the guest of Judge Price. J. U. Strode came over from Windsor today where he lias his horses resting up for the meeting there. Bonnie Reg has broken down and may never race again. J. W. Blalock valued him at $1,500. S. T. White, of Chicago, the owner of De Oro . and other good horses, was a visitor at the track and will remain a few days. Local News THE MINKS' SPARKLING EACE WINS HANDICAP AT LATONIA AFTER BEING APPARENTLY HOPELESSLY OUT OF IT. Treubel Rides Him Masterfully -Bad Racing Luck Spoils a Coup With Carthage Easy for Lens Nicol Rides Three Winners. Cincinnati, Ohio, August 11. In the free handicap at a mile at Latonia today The Minks ran one of the most phenomenal races of the meeting. Only four started, but they were so evenly matched as to weights that each of them had strong support in the betting. Major T. J. Carson outbroke the others, but was Immediately outrun by Wee Lass and Miss Doyle. The early speed was of record-breaking quality, and by the time the field had straightened for the run along the backstretch The Minks was so far out of it that he looked like a 100 to 1 chance to show The tremendous speed, however, told on the leaders and they began to tire in the stretch, and Treubel, riding a. race that would have been a credit to the best jockey that ever donned colors, got his mount up at the end, winning in a drive by a narrow margin. Wee Lass in a close fit beating .Miss Doyle .for second place. Nicol was in his usual good form, riding three winners, Airship, Lens and Free Booter. With Lens this champion rider outgeneraled his competitor, waiting in front and winning easily from Lexoline, which ran "to something like the form his early spring work promised. That the holiday program might not be below requirements, racing secretary Lyman Davis carded eight races. The last of these, a selling affair at a mile, was. so badly depleted by scratches, however, that it was declared off, leaving seven races, an elegant sufficiency. The sport was of the kind that produces enthusiasm. The finishes were sufficiently close to suit the most exacting. The books had a busy day and honors rested with the crowd at the end. All the winners were liberally supported. J. B. Respess attempted a coup in the sixth race with Carthage. Only bad racing luck saved bookmakers all over the country a scorching. The horse was much the best of the others, but got away in a tangle at the start and then collided with Prince of Pless, causing Treuliel to lose a stirrup. By the time he was straightened he was a bad last. He overcame the big gap that separated him from the leaders after going a half mile and assumed the lead In the stretch, but weakened In the closing strides, enabling Search Me to beat him out. Jockey Sobell. who was severely injured in falling with Pirate's Dance yesterday, is still In a precarious condition In one of the local hospitals. Hope for his recovery, however. Is entertained. He will be scarred up pretty badly If he recovers. Jockey Jost ie now considered out of danger. The rider, however, is still complaining of great pains in hia stomach. S. H. Kunz has signed a jockey by the name of Graser. The lad has ridden abroad, and claims a city in Hungary as his home. He Is said to have piloted a number of winners home on the Austrian courses. Fred Cook left tonight for Chicago for a short visit before his departure for Saratoga. Ed. Alvey lias gone to Louisville and will not book again until the beginning of the fall meeting at Douglas Park. There Will be Racing at Havana THERE WILL BE RACING AT HAVANA. New York, August 11. The announcement made a few days ago to the effect that the "Havana Jockey Club had decided to abandon its meeting in Havana next winter" seems to have created the impression that there Is to be no racing at the Cuban capital. The Cuban Jockey Club, which Is now rushing its plant to completion, will hold Its inaugural meeting as announced, beginning about December 9. . The Cuban Jockey Club Is the substantial organization. The Havana Jockey Club is a somewhat mythical affair. It is considered to have been the dream of a coterie of New Yorkers who bad a notion that they could profit by cutting In at Havana. Yearlings Shipped to Saratoga YEARLINGS SHIPPED TO SARATOGA. Nashville, Tenn., August 11. Twenty grandly bred thoroughbred yearlings from Walter O. Parmer's Edenwold Stud and B. S. Gardner's Avondale Stud left here tonight by express for Saratoga. They will arrive In Saratoga Monday and will be on exhibition there until Monday. August 20, when they are to be sold by auction. They are a grand looking lot and, bred as they are. It Is the opinion of local horsemen and breeders who have seen them that they will bring as good an average as has been obtained at any sale of'yearlings this year. The advertisement of the sale of these yearlings will lie found on the last page of this issue of Daily Racing Form. Why Algonquin Stable is Under the Ban WHY ALGONQUIN STABLE IS UNDER THE BAN. At Saratoga last Monday .it was announced that entries from the Algonquin Stable would be refused. At that time it was stated that the reason had not been made known. In the current issue of tiie Racing Calendar the reason Is given in the following, which is printed In the proceedings of the meeting of the stewards of the Jockey Club on August G, at Saratoga: "The assistant secretary submitted an advertisement of Arthur Peabody & Sons, 22 West 23d Street, New York, setting forth an investment scheme and tipping bureau, and made a statement that Arthur Peabody had registered the assumed name 'Algonquin Stable' with the Jockey Club. "On motion, duly seconded, the assistant secretary was Instructed to write all associations racing under the jurisdiction of the Jockey Club, recommending that no further entries be received from Arthur Peabody or the Algonquin Stable." Brady, the American jockey, who recently went to England, saved the life of Otto Madden, the noted English jockey, at the Brighton course on Thursday. Brady had the mount on Marigold for the fourth race. On the way to the post Madden was walking bis mount alongside of Marigold when that horse suddenly seized Madden by the arm, dragged him from the saddle, sank hia teeth Into the rider's throat and tried to shake hint as a terrier would a rat. Brady slipped from his saddle and fought the horse off the prostrate Madden. Marigold then turned savagely upon Brady, who sidestepped the onslaught, vaulted into the saddle, recovered bis reins and subdued tiie animal amid the hearty cheers Vf the spectators who but a moment before had been horror stricken. No Fountainblue-Horace E. Match Likely NO FOUNTAINBLUE-HORACE E. MATCH LIKELY Saratoga, N. Y August 11. In playing up the possibility of a match race between Fountalnblue and Horace E. for $20,000 a side, the newspapers of New York appear to-have been wasting a lot of space. James B. Brady says there is not a chance for such a match. In the first place, he says, he does not believe In match races and in the next Instance there Is ample opportunity to decide the merits of the two colts in the Flatbnsh Stakes at Sheepshead Bay, or the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park. He says it is the intention to start Fountalnblue In both these stakes and that trainer Allen will have him ready for them. "Fountain-blue Is perfectly sound and superbly healthy," added Mr. Brady. "He Is a great horse, that's certain, and he will not get out of the way of Horace E. or any other horse of his age." F. A. Forsythe, who sold Fountalnblue to Mr. Brady, said today: "After the performance of Horace E. yesterday, I am willing to bet as much as $2,000 that Fountalnblue can beat the Rainey colt doing anything. It is true that Horace E. beat Fountalnblue at Memphis, but that was in the early spring when Fountalnblue was not fit and when Horace E. had bad the experience of bis racing in California." Won driving: second and third the same. Alfar took up the running at the end of the first six furlongs when Kassil fell and held sway practically undisturbed until too late, getting home by weaving in and out in front of Delcpnta's belated challenge. Delcanta, choked back in an effort to place him, was always within striking distance and outjumped the others, moved up at the half, where, after numerous interferences by the leader, he just failed to get up and was best. Hylas, favored throughout by the slow pace, was able to maintaiii a place in forward contention in the early running, but failed when the real end struggle began. Mackey Dwyer ran prominently for two miles and then dropied out. Coligny was really never dangerous and ran a poor race.
