STQ. 198. CHICAGO, SUNDAY, AUGUST 19, 1906. PRICE 5 CETS Tangle's Great Republic: Hitchcock Filly Wins Under the Whip in the Last Strides TANGLE'S GREAT REPUBLIC. HITCHCOCK FILLY WINS UNDER THE WHIP IN THE LAST STRIDES. Potcr Fan, Added Starter, Takes Hopeful Stakes for James R. Keene Grandpa the Victor in Shille-, lah Steeplechase Tremendous Crowd. Saratoga, N. Y., August 18. This was the banner day of the season and probably the greatest in the history of racing at Saratoga. The Great Republic Stakes and the Hopeful Stakes, two of the richest turf fixtures in America, were decided today. The stands and lawns proved totally inadequate to comfortably accommodate the vast crowd that thronged the historic enclosure. All records for attendance - were far eclipsed. Dozens of special trains crowded with turf devotees from the surrounding towns helped to swell the grand total of persons present to 25,000. The delegation from New Amsterdam alone was 2,000. All of these went home broke. They backed Mohawk II. to a man to win the big race and he finished last. Francis K. Hitchcock's Tangle, the 7 to 10 favorite unexpectedly won out under the whip In the last couple of strides when an instant or two before her backers had given up all hope. Miller rode Gallavant, the disturbing factor in the race, with so much skill and vigor that the Wilson horse appeared all over the winner when beginning the final one hundred yards of the trying mile and a quarter journey. Whimsical, after making the pace for nearly a mile saved a good third and will be hard to beat from now on. Go Between, in the colors of his new owner, E. R. Thomas, lacked sufficient preparation and failed to stay. It was only a mild workout for this great horse. He never looked better. Peter Pan, the added starter, won the Hopeful Stakec. the rich two-year-old fixture, at six furlongs: i Jimmy Rowc chanced him as the Keene stable's second string, withdrawing Mentha at the last moment. The shift was made with unexpectedly good results. The experiment of running the big Cora-" mando colt In blinkers worked the marvelous improvement that he developed in the race. The victory of Peter Pan was a stunning surprise to every one except ills trainer, who was prepared for it and declared that the youngster only showed his true form for the first time In his career. It was apparent early in the running that the despised topweight had the measure of b.s opponents and his victory was doubly acclaimed because he carried the idol of the crowd. Pope Joan, the best liked one of the Keene entry, with him in bis victorious career. The uuexpeeted result of the Shlllelah Steeplechase over the full course when Grandpa was returned an easy winner, was greeted with silence. It was not a popular victory. False reports had been sent out as to the condition of W. C. Hayes jumper right after his last race and the majority of racegoers Inclined to the belief that the owner of this splendid cross-country performer had resorted to sharp practices. Neither would the success of EI Cuchillo, the runner-up. have been hailed with delight in view of the suspicious looking ride he received at Brighton Beach when he was beaten by third raters. Blondy won like a superior class two-year-old from a big field in the opening at five and a half furlongs. Entered to be sold for $1,500, Robert Tucker bid him up to $3,000, at which price U. Z. DeArman let the colt go. California Kiug, ridden by the crack gentleman rider, Mr. Tucker, won the mile race for amateur jockeys. Wishard's horse was heavily backed at short odds and the result wa never In doubt after going the first furlong. From a time standpoint it was noteworthy and probably establishes a record for the distance in a race of this character. H. B. Duryea scored one of his rare victories with Ben Ban in the last race at six furlongs. Barney Scbreiber's Nealon, which finished a close third, should have won. The great two-year-old Water Pearl, which trainer Joyucr yesterday pronounced all right, was suddenly taken ill today. His ailment is diagnosed as inflammation of the stomach. The Paget colt is now an improbable starter in the Futurity. Accountant worked an easv mile and a quarter between races today in 2.10, "with the Brady colors up In preparation for next week's Derby. Al Fresco Dies at Montrose Farm AL FRESCO DIES AT MONTROSE FARM; Lexington, Ky., August 18. Al Fresco, the eleven year old son of Eolus Giadiola, died a few days ago of locked bowels at Montrose Farm. Major P. P. Johnston bought Al Fresco in November 1901, at the closing out sale of the late Hardy B. Durham's Horse Haven Stud and his oldest get now at Montrose Farm are yearlings. Al Fresco was a winner at two years old; a stake winner of nine races as a three-year-old and a winner of six races as a four-year-old in 1800. He did all his racing in the colors of Tony Licalzi, and among his creditable races were a mile in 1:42, a mile and seventy ynrds In 1:44 J, a mile and an eighth, twice, in 1:53, and a mile and a quarter in 2:07. Major Johnston secured Al Fresco for the stud localise of the success of Eolus sons as sires, such stallions as Russell, Morello, Eon, Knight of Ellerslle, St. Saviour and Merry Day being by the famous Virginia horse. Al Fresco Is succeeded at Montrose Farm by the American-bred English stake winner Omaha II., a son of Watercress and Orange Leaf, which Major Johnston purchased some time since from Henry M. Ziegler. Burglar Shot at Whitney Home BURGLAR SHOT AT WHITNEY HOME. New York, August 18. Three burglars made a bold attempt to rob the country home of Harry Payne Whitney in the Wheatley hills, near Roslyn, L. I., early today. Henry Piper, a watchman, heard the men on the porch. He slipped to the rear of the house, where he came upon two of the men. Piper fired several shots at them and is sure he hit one of them. Piper says that the third man ran around from the front of the house and dragged the injured man away with them. Mr. Whitney and his family are in Europe. Advance Guard's Good Looking Get ADVANCE GUARD'S GOOD LOOKING GET. The first crop of foals by Advance Guard are at Woodhurn Farm in Kentucky and they are said to be rare good lookers. Kentucky breeders are now figuring that perhaps they made a mistake In letting the famous campaigner pass out of the state and it is now thought time will prove that the New York Bureau of Breeding has secured in him a jewel of a Hire. Condensed History of the Kentucky Stakes CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE KENTUCKY STAKES. The Kentucky Stakes, to be run at Saratoga tomorrow, is now a stake for two-year-old fillies, but when first run thirty-six years ago it was a mile dash for two-year-olds of both sexes and was then carried off by the famous Harry Bassctt, one of the greatest racers that ever stepped on a racetrack in any country. The distance was reduced to three-quarters in 1S77 and the race was run at that distance until 1S05, when it was dropped from the Saratoga stake list by the demoralizing Walbaum administration. Tlie stake was revived and made one for fillies exclusively when Mr. Whitney and ills associates gained possession of the track and restored it to popular favor. Its honor list qf winners shows many great names besides that of Harry Bassett. Of the old-timers, Sue Ryder, Battle Axe, Parole, Susquehanna, Pride of the Village, Uncas, Brainbaletta, Onondaga, George Kinney, Qidto, King Fox, Emperor of Norfolk and Santiago were all racing stars of rare brilliancy. Restoration's Iroquois Hotel Stakes: Big Crowd Sees the Sport at Fort Erie-Tickle's Race May be Investigated RESTORATION'S IROQUOIS HOTEL STAKES. Big- Crowd Sees the Sport at Fort Erie Tickle's Race May Be Investigated. Buffalo, N. Y., August 18. A large half-holiday crowd was at Fort Erie today. The Iroquois Hotel Stakes, carrying with it a value of $1,200, was the feature. Restorationv-from the El S.rGarduer "stable, won it easily. Restoration, coupled with Char-He Gilbert, was the choice. Every horse in the race was well supported. Messrs. Waters & Malcolm, J .H. Valentine and Ed Glassco shipped their stables to Windsor tills afternoon, while C. C. Van Meter, Allan Steele and Vic Henderson sent their strings to Douglas Park. Louisville. Henderson will book at Douglas Park. Butinskle will be rested up, while the firing irons will be applied to Kurtzraann. Hamllcar, which was carded to start in the fifth race, broke down while being exercised this morning and will be retired for the season. W. O. Parmer left for Saratoga last night. He went to attend the sale of his yearlings, which will be held Monday. General W. T. Townes, of Virginia, who ias been racing a small stable at Kenilworth and Fort Erie, arrived yesterday and arranged to ship to New York. J. W. Pangle has had charge of the horses he has been racing here, which includes, among others, the promising two-year-old filly, AVorkmaid. Jockey Dealy, who had the mount on Wexford, was fined $25 and suspended for the remainder of the meeting for rough riding. He Interfered with Solon Shingle at the turn into the homestretch, where he carried the latter a bit wide. Tickle's exhibition in the first race was much le-low the form she displayed in her two previous efforts and there was some talk after her race today of an investigation. Her trainer. Carter Hall, was as much put out over Tickle's poor race as were the people who backed her. Money-Earning Steeplechasers MONEY-EARNING STEEPLECHASERS. It is understood that lie has arranged to go to New Orleans and take up his work on the Crescent City track the coming winter. He worked wonders there last winter and his services will be appreciated again. His success at Harlem and Oaklawn was likewise marked. Cunningham has secured an option on ground at Helena, Ark., and has made all arrangements to open a new racetrack there, where a six-day meeting will be held during October. The Helena meeting will precede the usual winter meeting at New Orleans, and dates convenient for horsemen who usually journey south after the close of Latonia will be chosen. Ballet's Three Living Daughters BALLET'S THREE LIVING DAUGHTERS. Peg Woflington, owned by T. C. .McDowell; Elizabeth L., the property of Harry Payne Whitney, and Thundercloud, owned by George H. Clay, are the only living daughters of Ballet, one of the most famous of American thoroughbred matrons. Elizabeth L. is the youngest of the trio. She Is sixteen years old. Peg Woflington Is now twenty-one and Thundercloud twenty-four years old. Bonnie Lee's Nine Winners BONNIE LEE'S NINE WINNERS. Two Bells is the ninth winner produced by Bonnie Lee, a mare with only nine crosses to her pedigree and no Bruce Lowe standing. One of her sons; Yale, was a stake winner In England. Her son, Dr. Rice, and her daughters, On-the-Lca and Mary Street, were all stake winners. Her other winners are Palette, Startle, Fleeting Moments and Prince Lee. Stake Races of This Week at Saratoga: Derby is to be Decided Thursday-Sir Huon is to Start in the Cup STAKE RACES OF THIS WEEK AT SARATOGA. Derby Is to Be Decided Thursday Sir Huon Is to Start In the Cup. Saratoga racing will continue under high pressure throughout the present week with many important stakes to be decided, beginning with the Kentucky Stakes, for "two-year-old fillies tomorrow afternoon, and winding up with the time-honored Saratoga Cup next Saturday. It has been a remarkably fine meeting so far and no diminution of interest or attractiveness Is in sight. Accidents of racing and training have removed some horses of which much was expected from active participation in the racing, but in horsedom as in the ranks of their masters, there arc always others and new stars shine out quickly to receive the plaudits formerly awarded other favorites. The Kentucky Stakes will afford a good contest tomorrow afternoon. The probable starters are named In the entry lists published today. The feature for Tuesday will be the Merchants and Citizens Handicap, at a mile and three-sixteenths, with Outcome, LaMy Savoy, Dandelion, Bedouin, "Jac-quin. Von Tromp, Red Leaf, Oxford, Merry Lark, Bull's Eye, Inquisitor, Kiamcsha, Cairngorm, Ra-vena, Johnstown, Old Faithful and Dolly Spanker most prominent of the ellgibles. For Wednesday the Albany Handicap, for two-year-olds, at three-quarters of a mile will be the chief attraction. It has eighty-eight ellgibles among which are Peuarrls, W. H. Daniel, Hardshot, Ben Strong, Clara Huron, Yankee Girl, Zal, Fantastic, Philander, Gretna Green, Master Lester, McCarter, Saracenesca, Norfolk, Kennyetto, Sir William Johnson, Mlntberia. Eddie Ware, Killaloc, Jersey Lady and other useful performers. The central attraction for Thursday is the Saratoga Derby, at a mile and five-sixteenths. A month ago this promised a tine race, but now It seems narrowed down to Accountant, Gallavant, and Mohawk II. Gallavant is evidently a greatly improved young horse and to be considered in any sort of company. His performance in the Great Republic Was one of great merit. Belmcre. Albert F., McKittredge. Bohemian, Kuroki. Bull's Eye, Ormondale and Ben Hodder are also eligible to start and it may be that some of them will be sent to the post. Tlie Seneca Selling Stakes, for three-year-olds, will be run Friday. It is a dash of three-quarters, and Edna Jacksou, Wes, Arklirta, Inquisitor. Bull's Eye. Sue Smith, Pythia, Penrhyn, Lady Navarre, James Reddick, Guiding Star, Security, Cicely, Disobedient and Killkare are prominent in the entry list. The card for Saturday embraces three rich stakes the Beverwyck Steeplechase, the $10,000 Grand Union Hotel Stakes, and the Saratoga Cup. Ben Crockett, Herculoid. Balzac, The Lad, Caller, Coligny, Jimmy Lane, Paul Jones, Black Hussar, Phantom, Goldfleur, Cardigan, Mackey Dwyer, Maximilian and other well schooled jumpers are in the Beverwyck and should furnish a capital contest. Most prominent of the nominations to the Grand Union Hotel Stakes are Water Pearl, Oran, De Mund. Gretna Green, Marathon, Arclte, Aletheuo, Paumonok, Hickory, Prince Hampton and Don Enrique. The Cup will probably bring out the western crack. Sir Huon. The mile and three-quarters route will suit this fleet and staying son of Falsetto. It is his only stake engagement at Saratoga and is at weight for age. With Oiseau out of the way, his most probable opponents seem to be Go Between, Whimsical, Bull's Eye and Flip Flap. Dolly Spanker, Cairngorm, Proper and Samson are outisde possibilities. Good day and track or bad day and track, Sir Huon should win. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. The apprentice allowances of Jockeys Burlcy Christian and W. Huntington expired yesterday. Stakes for the fall meeting at Toronto closed last night. Secretary Fraser is at Saratoga and is confident of a splendid entry list. Martin Nathanson Is rustling among the easterners for promises of some of the best horses for the winter racing in New Orleans. There will be racing at only two tracks Thursday and Friday. Fort Erie closes on Wednesday and Windsor does not open until Saturday. A racegoer found a watch and fob hanging to a button on his coat as he came out of the betting ring at Saratoga Wednesday, and turned It over to Detective Beutler. The-efforts of certain morality professors to make a "tight town" of Toronto is getting on the nerves of the population. Some of the newspapers have Intimated to the holier-than-thou aggregation that it ia time for them to skidoo. John L. Inglis is Best: Wins the Handicap at Latonia, Conceding Weight All Around JOHN L. INGLIS IS BEST. WINS THE HANDICAP AT LATONIA, C0NCED- ' ING WEIGHT ALL AROUND. Lens Scores His Tenth Victory Chief Millikin, Heavily Backed, Loses Through Interference at the Start Gossip at the Track. Cincinnati, O., August 18. With a track fetlock deep In mud, one of the worst of the meeting, the program at Latonia today was reduced by scratches to horses with a fancy for heavy going, enough remaining in, however, to make the contests interesting. The odds quoted about John L. Inglis In the mile handicap were surprisingly liberal, due to the fact that with 110 pounds up lie was asked to concede big weight to each of the other three starters, and, it was not believed that he could accomplish tho task. Wee Lass, on top of her half a dozen or more hard races recently, especially as she was asked to travel the mile route, was held at an unreasonably short price. She had some bad racing luck, being shut off on the first turn. That she did not win was simply because she was not good enough. She showed her usual speed and outfooted John L. Ingll3 up the backstretch, but the latter wore her down on the stretch turn and she dropped entirely out of It. Miss Doyle ran a game and consistent race. This fine, big marc ought to continue to Improve. Pat Dunne's Lens, next to Planute the best two-year-old at the track, gave away lumps of weight to a speedy lot, outbroke them, outran them and won as his rider liked. Martha Gorman had a close call. If Roscoe had had a recent race in him he would have beaten her, .as she was doing her level best all through the journey. Chief Millikin was one o the heaviest backed horses of the' afternoon. If no bad gotten away well. no. doubt .he, would have won. He collided with Fenian as the barrier went up and was so badly out of it by the time the field got In motion that it looked as though he had been left at the post. Two Bells reared up and fell with Robinson while the youngsters were at the post in the first, bruising the boy's leg, but not sufficiently to prevent him from filling bis engagements. Horsemen were put to considerable inconvenience through the shutting off of the water supply, the result of a break in the Covington water works. The lake in the infield supplied water for the stables while water for kitchen purposes was obtained from wells in Latonia. Jockey Sobell, who was injured last, week In a steeplechase race, has had a number of delirious spells recently, and there is some apprehension at the hospital that these may cause brain trouble. In one of these spells lie tore the stitches from his nose. Jost and Raines are doing well. Ed Alvey and Charles Bollinger were among the bookmakers today. The betting was heavy. Whoa Bill bled after going a half mile and was eased up the last quarter. After the finish of the last race jockey Buchanan's stirrup broke and he was thrown heavily. It was some time before Sand Bath was caught. Buchanan was fined $25 by the starter In the sixth race for misbehavior at the post. Free Booter struck himself in yesterday's race and is quite lame. "When in Doubt Play Miller" "WHEN IN DOUBT PLAY MILLER." "When in doubt play Miller," says the Saratoga correspondent of the New York Sun. "This system of making racetrack visits remunerative has been advocated practically all summer, but never more than now has there been such a general inclination to follow the standard of the popular lightweight. The regulars here with but few exceptions are losers, for the form has been bewildering. Owners, trainers and layers have found their calculations, no matter how carefully made, untrustworthy, but the visiting element, the sort that In the old days stuck a pin in their program to find the winners, or backed a horse because the colors his rider was to wear matched the parasol of the women that sat across the table, arc rolling in w'ealth, winning day after day enough to pay expenses and a, good margin over. Miller is really a marvel in the saddle. At the post he Is in a class by himself. No matter how big the field is and how bad an actor he may be on you can count on his being away in the front rank when the barrier is sprung. At the finish there are several of his fellows that can more than hold their own with him, but it is in the early stages of a race that he makes them look ordinary." Relay Race for Cowboys RELAY RACE FOR COWBOYS. One of the features of the Montana State Fair at Helena, October 1 to 7, will be a cowboy relay race for '$1,000 and the championship of the northwest. The roughriders of the country arc now in the northwest, many of the range sections having passed Into the hands of the farmer. This event is a recognition of the range rider that has not been afforded before, and the interest is growing. Under the conditions the race is for twenty-four miles, or four miles each day. The rider . is to change his saddle from one horse to another at the end Qt each mile, without assistance. One man is allowed each rider to hold the mounts, and the bridle need not be changed. Thoroughbred racehorses are barred, giving the race to the speedy cow horse. The entries close September 10, and It is expected to be one of tho greatest events of the year among tho cowpunchers.
