XII. yp. 202. CHICAGO, FRIDAY, AUGUST 24, 1906. , PRICE 5 CE3?TS Accountant Lucky to Win: Gallavant Has Him Driving at End of Saratoga Derby ACCOUNTANT LUCKY TO WIN. pALLAVANT HAS HIM DRIVING AT END OF SARATOGA DERBY, i Heavy Betting; On the Wilson Horse Kiameaha Is Beaten by Zienap for the Mile Handicap Favorite a Bleeder. Saratoga, N. Y., August 23. It was oppressively hot, but fully twelve thousand persons witnessed the runuing of an excellent card today, the Saratoga Derby being the feature, at the unusual distance of one mile and five sixteenths. "Diamond Jim" Brady's prize package. Accountant, added another rich stake to his credit bj; defeating the erratic Gallnvant in a hard drive, with the only other starter. MeKlttredge, a distant third. In view of the fact that track conditions were considered to be distinctly favorable to Gallavant and that the Wilson colt was thoroughly seasoned In recent races as against Accountant's' possible dislike to the going, and a further probabilltyof his hot being keyed up for so long a journey, the former colt was the medium of some of the heaviest betting of the season. The Gates-Drake combination led In backing him, taking all the 8 to 5 offered in the ring. This enabled the favorite followers to obtain as good as 7 to 10 or better against Brady's champion, but they were lucky to cash. Had Oallavant run truly In this race he would have been returned the winner. Despite the loss of a half dozen lengths on the turn the Wilson qplt finished wearing the favorite down at . the end. Experts declared, however, that this is as near to the winner as he will ever be again, this season. Withdrawals ruined the handicap at a mile. In which some of .the fastest Allies and mares in training were originally named to start. Glnette and Neva Lee were the conspicuous absentees. The field dwindled down to Klaniesha, Zienap and Bivouac. Kiamesha, the topweight, was held at short odds by the layers and fortunes were lost with her unexpected defeat. Indeed the former record-breaker was exceedingly lucky to be second, as Bivouac was overhauling her at every stride and only finished a nose behind her after running to the extreme outside in the closing three furlongs. Kiaroesha's race was too bad to be true and an Investigation followed, which developed that the famous mare had bled recently In her work and had accordingly been indulged in her exercise and was short. This fact had been kept a profound secret, and it was not learned that any one In particular had benefited by It. Belle Strome showed a sudden reversal of form by winning the first race at seven furlongs from a big band of selling platers. Jocund, now handled by W. B. Jennings, ran a winning race. Pirate, at odds-ou, easily captured the steeplechase handicap over the full course. J. E. Madden's filly, Beinay, reversed her previous running by easily winning the two-year-old selling, at five and a half furlongs. The apprentice rider, Alex, rode her suspiciously In her preceding race and was summarily dismissed from. Madden's employ. Lord Lovat, one of the grandest looking colts seen this year, won the closing race In stake horse fashion and was the medium of one of the biggest coups of the current meeting. Grimaldi made a promising debut and, If he runs up to his private form, may win the Futurity. Lord Lovat is in the United States Hotel Stakes to lie run next Saturday. His weight is 117 pounds, and experts predict an easy victory for the crack youngster. Foxhall Keene was at the race course this afternoon. J. B. Brady, gave jockey Martin a $1,000 fee for rjdlng Accountant to. victory In the Derby. "Chicago" O'Brien lost a wager of $20,000 on Kiamesha today. Another Disqualification at Latonia: Hereafter Fouls Warner Griswell-a Demonstration Follows the Action of the Judges ANOTHER DISQUALIFICATION AT LATONIA. Hsreafter Fouls Warner Griswell A Demonstration Follows the Action of the Judges. Cincinnati, O., Angust 23. A wild demonstration followed the disqualification of Hereafter In the fifth race at Latonia today. Hereafter -was a well backed outsider. He showed the most speed, leading Warner Griswell, the best backed favorite of the afternoon, throughout and finished first by a good margin. In the stretch drive, however, Au-buchon brought Hereafter from the center of the track to the inner rail, deliberately and effectively impeding the favorite and forcing Nicol to take back and lose some ground. Horsemen who saw the foul were not surprised to see Nlcol lodge complaint and the change in the numbers that gave the race to Warner Griswell. With many of the spectators, however, it -was different. They were still dissatisfied with yesterday's disqualification and did not hesitate to criticise the judges ruling. Au-buchon was fined $50. The card was at best a mediocre one and was further depleted by withdrawals in all the races, the .last one being declared off entirely and a new selling race at a mile substituted. A number of those entered for the original sixth were entered to start in the substituted race, showing that the owners In trying to pick a soft spot went up against a harder problem. In this Instance Carthage proved to be much the best. Although he was practically left at the post, be won In bandy style, while those originally slated finished nowhere within hailing distance of the winner. The return of Fred Cook to the ranks of layers here enlivened matters In the betting rlug. His stay here will be of short duration; He says the horses he shipped to Sheepshead Bay in charge of trainer Bill Phillips are doing well and will begin their campaign on the opening day of the Sheepshead Bay fall meeting. He says be will attend the yearling "sales and purchase material for next season-After a week's stay at Sheepshead Bay he will go to Louisville and resume booking at the Douglas Park meeting. He has made arrangements to let Nicol remain here until Thursday of next week, when the1 jockey will go to New York. Among the mounts be will have on the opening day will be the best one of James It. Keene's entry in the Futurity. C. C. McCnfferty took his string of horses to Windsor today. There are ten head In the string. J. H. Shouldiee also sent his horses there. E. J. Glldersleeve, from whom Amberltn and Chief Millikln were claimed yesterday, repurchased the horses at advanced prices today. Jockey Jost Is out of the hospital and will. probably accept mounts beginning next week. Montalban Is reported very sick and grave fears are entertained as to his recovery. J. 0. Keene, who Is now racing Red Leaf 4 and other horses at Saratoga, has sent word to his brother.. G. H. Keene, that be will ship at the close, of the Saratoga meeting all of their horses now In the east to Douglas Park. Ten Weeks of Idleness or Bush Racing: Horsemen at Seattle Are Confronted with This Problem-Little Chance for Meeting at Portland TEN WEEKS OF IDLENESS OR BUSH RACING. Horsemen at Seattle Are .Confronted With This Problem Little Chance for Meeting: at Portland. Seattle, Wash., August 23. With the meeting at the. Meadows nearing an end, there is no loss of Interest In the sport. Rather, the attendance Is larger than It has been at any time during the season. The stand has been 'well filled, ever day; while the betting ring htm been -jammed! Several of the bookmakers have moved to Butte for the meeting which opened Tuesday. The meeting here will close on September 3, and that at Butte will end September 8, but there will be minor meetings to follow and a numher of horsemen have announced their intention of taking their runners over to Montana. Others will go to Salem and east of the mountains for the bush meetings that will be held immediately after the close of rating here. Anxious eyes are turned toward Portland, and there are ma,ny who wish there will be something doing there. Although there is a good crowd at Portland who believe there is a chance that there will be a meeting, horsemen here do not think It will be possible for any meeting, and the next big racing will be In California In November, Many horsemen, employes, jockeys and others who make their living from the tracks, and do not care to journey over the bush circuits, are wondering how they will fill in the space between the Seattle and California meetings. This was the motive for proposing an extension of five days here, but the stewards came to the conclusion that It was best to let a good thing alone. The meeting has been the most successful in the history of racing in the northwest, and . the stewards considered that It was due the public and outside horsemen to close the meeting as originally announced by the association. Gates Must Pay $5,000 instead of $500 GATES MUST PAY $5,000 INSTEAD OF $500. Saratoga, N. Y., August 23. -Messrs. Peter Mc-Grath, W. Davis and W. Hutchinson, the arbitration committee of the Metropolitan Turf Association, which was called upon to decide the disputed McGibben-Cowan wager on Wes, made last Monday, have given judgment in favor of the bookmaker. John W. Gates must pay Cowan $5,000 instead of $500 on the ground that McGibben, his agent, was a professional betting commissioner and therefore bound by the rules to verify his wagers. Bemay, from a good start and with clear sailing, improved her position rapidly and challenged ibe leader In the stretch, drawing away like a shot at the end. Fish Hawk ran lapped on the early pacemaker to the far turn; where he shot Into a long lead, but tired badly in the closing drive. Quagga finished like a cyclone and ran a cracking good race. Pepper and Salt, away poorly, closed 11 considerable gap. Puissant suffered from crowding at ,the start and made up much ground. Umbrella,' knocked to the rear at the' start, closed up fast in the stretch. Vaquero. shuffled repeatedly out of position, finally ,retlredaltogether on the far turn. . Dry Dollar displayed fine early speed and may have beeii short. Vacharis showed early speed and finished easing up. Cambyscs was as good as left. Kiamcoha was the victim of waiting tactics and failed to come on when called upon iti the last quarter, disliked il? going and was short. Purslane got away poorly, but raced up Into forward contention at the half and Improved his position steadily to the finish, but could not quite get up and probably was handicapped by the cuppy going. Grimaldi showed the most speed for five furlongs and held on well in the elosing drive, was palpably short and Is probably all they claim for 1dm.
