PRICE 5 CE2TTS Heavy Losses for Talent: Broadcloth and Grapple Carry Thousands Into Coffers of the Layers HEAVY LOSSES FOR TALENT. 1 i BROADCLOTH AND GRAPPLE CARRY THOUSANDS INTO COFFERS OF THE LAYERS. j 1 a John A. Drake Plunges on Them Right Royal Wins the Amsterdam Selling Stakes Bivouac Scores for Raymond Belmont. j r 1 Saratoga, X. Y., August 27. A heavy downpour , nf rain during the forenoon dampened the ardor of i racing enthusiasts, as evidenced by the light attendance at the track, and also spoiled one of the most I pretentions and attractive cards of the meeting. 1 Withdrawals sadly depleted the majority of the : seven races. The track proper resembled a muddy 1 canal and some of the most pronounced upsets of 1 the season developed witli the defeat of John A. i Drake's pair of prohibitive favorites. Broadcloth and : Grapple. The former, carrying a stable commission ; of $20,000, as well as a majority of the general pub-He's wagers, led oft! by running second to the long shot Bertha K. in the opening race at seven furlongs. Presumably few benefited by the victory of Thomas Hitchcock. Jr.'s Paul Jones in the oross-eonntry affair that followed, the steadily receding price about him indicating that be was ignored in fav r of Maxlr millan and when the latter came to grief, the speculatively inclined public, fell with him. J. C. Core came to the talent's rescue In the! third, lint, even though he appeared to far outclass his competitors, there was a tendency to play all around the Newcastle Stable's crack. Grapple, at odds-on in the Amsterdam Selling Stakes, at one mile, was apparently the horse with which to recoup previous losses. John A. Drake led a misguided plunge by placing a big commission on the Metropolitan Handicap winner. The magnificent cripple Right Boyal, at long odds, took his measure in benumbing as well as decisive fash-Ion. There was not much business doing In the ring after that. The fifth was a grab bag selling affair at five and a half furlongs for two-year-old maidens. The bookmakers again had the best of the argument by laying a ridiculously short price against the highly tried winner Animus. There were seventeen 1 good things in this race, all in receipt of more or less support. It was a close thing between three ut the finish. Raymond Belmont won his first victory on the ! American turf with Bivouac in the mile and a furlong handicap. The Hastings mare was a lukewarm i favorite throughout the betting and probably carried I less money than either Yorkshire Lad or Sonoma Belle. Bivouac, lightly weighted, practically won 1 all the way and after the race experts entertained I an excellent impression of her capacity. Sailor Boy's i forward running astounded onlookers who recalled his backward showing in his preceding race in the ? muddy going when "Father Bill" Daly excused the I horse's bad race by explaining that he could not L run on that kind of a track. Billy Cahill rode his apprentice boy Beckman on Mortlboy in the last race and scored. The Albert ' colt's victory cost him dear, U. Z. De Arraan "boosting" him from $500 to $2,000, the owner buying him in for an extra $3. , Sir Bussell has been bought by Ed Gaylord, of ' Denver. The price was not divulged. I L ' , ' BELMONT PARK'S AUTUMN STAKE ENTRIES. G Twenty-two Races Receive 708 Nominations Three- T year-old Steeplechasers Named for Harbor Hill. For its coming autumn meeting, the Westchester Racing Association received highly satisfactory en- o of tries to its stakes which closed August 15. Nearly t all of the desirable horses of the present day were o of nominated and racing of the highest class is as- snred for the grand Belmont Park course. As a 1 rule horses are now at their best and entries are of those in the highest development of training, fit and 1 it ready to race any day. For that reason an entry list of twenty-five or thirty horses now represents r more racing probabilities than one of double the rj number in the spring. a a Besides making public the nominations referred to, the club has also announced the list of ellglbles to the two divisions of the rich and important 1 Matron Stakes. For the colts' division, there are a thirty-seven ellglbles and for the fillies', twenty- c five. Among the colts that may start are such good J ones as Peter Pan, Ballot, Zambesi, Grlmaldt, Oran. McCarter, Old Honesty, Okenite, Don Enrique, Hard- j I shot, Chaseaway, Yankee Gun, Aletheuo and Faust, t while in the division for fillies Pope Joan, Glamor, Yankee Girl, Fantastic and Sally K. have shown ( best. Some high bred fillies that have not started are in the list and may have been paved expressly , for the Matron. Apparently it may be In store ,for J James R. Keene to land both divisions. The two , long distance races, the Municipal Handicap and the J Belmont Park Autumn Weight for Age Race, received gratifying supplementary nominations and good contests seem assured in both. The entries to the various events closed are as follows: FOR TWO-YEAR-OLDS. Hurricana Stakes, selling; ."-8 mile CI Rancho del Paso Stakes, selling; 3-4 mile 0' White Plains Handicap; 3-4 mile ., 7". ' r 3 i. y :; . - e GEORGE C. BENNETT PROUD OF HIS HORSES, f. Tells of the "Kidding" of Tom Stevens and Tom McDowell When He Began Breeding. I Goorge C. Bennett, the Memphis turfman, owner Dishabille and Ethon, is pardonably elated over the excellent performances of those two products his own breeding establishment. He also boasts that he "has something on" some breeders who hail from the Blue Grass region, particularly Tom Stevens and Tom McDowell. This Is how he told to the Morning Telegraph at Saratoga Saturday: "Why, those fellows made all kinds of fun of me and my farm when I began breeding. That old Tom Stevens said I was trying to raise horses on T 'sandbar to win stakes and pnrses fjom'Kentucky- b bred horses. And that doggone Tom McDowell told f people that every time a spear of grass made its f appearance on my farm I made a nigger hurry and P chain it down so that a little high water from the Mississippi wouldn't wash it away. "Neither has anything on me just now. I think have a shade on them. While Tom Stevens la f racing his blue grass horses away out In the bushes s at Seattle and other points In the Puget Sound 1 country, my sandbar nags are performing in swell t company and winning swell races. As for Tom f McDowell, lie is here with a stable, but has no t horses that he dare start against that little four- r year-old Dishabille nor a two-year-old that he will r stack up against my colt Ethon. Of course he knows t that my mare won the Merchants' Handicap and f carried - 120 ponnds, but for fear he will try to i forget it I would like to refresh his memory by t calling attention to the fact that on the fourth of t July at Sneepshead Bay Ethon won the Spring t Stakes and Dishabille the Long Island Handicap; t and folks tell me they finished like horses that had 1 something to eat while growing. i "But the fun poked at 'me by Stevens and Mc-' -Dowell was not all that happened ,to me when I .1 became a breeder. My trainer actually quit me t when I said I would buy no more yearlings, but a depend on the produce of my own mares. That was 1 the reason why Henry McDaniel, as nice a fellow i as anybody would want to know, a good judge of a 1 racehorse and a first-class man in charge of a stable, left my employ. He was not pleased with my i youngsters as yearlings, and actually disliked them as two-year-olds. Dishabille was so little and ran i so poorly In her trials that Henry declared her out 1 of all her engagements. s "Mickey Shannon developed Dishabille. I sent i him to St. Louis with nine horses to race and to 1 sell if possible, and she was one of the lot. He took a fancy to her directly after he got charge of her and didn't start her until the middle of July, i She hadn't been racing long before she was recognized as a good filly. Mickey was authorized to i sell her, but he wouldn't do it. I let. him have his own way and am glad I did. Whenever she starts Mickey will have a bet on her. He thinks she is the greatest mare in the world. "My farm is located in Shelby County, Tennessee, twelve miles from Memphis. It contains 1,120 acres and last year I had enough pasture for 500 horses. We have in that section a clover that beats any grass of which I know. We don't have to cultivate. , it. All that Is necessary to get a bountiful crop is to cut it and let It grow again. And when It is made into hay horses will leave any blue grass that ever was seen and go after it. "It is called lespedeza. We don't know where it came from, but some old residents of the vicinity claim it was brought there by the Yankees during the civil war. The United States Agricultural De- partment has sent agents there to study the nature of it and to analyze it, and they reported that it contains more nutriment than any grass. So you can understand that my horses are not likely to suffer for want of food. "My stud is comprised of five stallions and tklrty- five mares. The stallions are King's Counsel (sire of Dishabille), Intrusive, Abe Frank, Sam Phillips and Lucky Dog. King's Counsel was imported iu utero, his dam, Dazzling Light, being in foal to Queen's Counsel when she was brought here from England. Charles Head Smith, of Chicago, paid $2,700 for him as a yearling. He showed fast trials and promised to be a good racehorse, but broke down before he could demonstrate his class. In the stud he has made good as the sire of Dishabille. If Ethon does as well as I expect him to, people will bave some respect for Intrusive as a sire. Any-' how, I guess the produce of my farm will be able to hold its own against anything Tom Stevens or Tom McDowell will bring to the races." Mickey Shannon, who left for Lexington Saturday with Bob Tucker's yearlings, said Mr. Bennett Is right. "Dishabille is the greatest mare in the country. When I took her to St. Louis he priced her at $700. Barney Schreiber offered me $1,500 for her and didn't get her. I was sure she was a good filly and that's why she continues to carry the green, white diamonds." Chief Millikin A Rowdy: Delays the Start and Then Pins Fon Domo to the Fence f. Judges at Latonia Will Bar Him from Racing Seven Favorites Fail Heavy Track Causes' Upsets Many Withdrawals. Cincinnati, 0., August 27. Form calculations went wrong this afternoon. This was attributed to the heavy and holding track. The defeat of seven favorites was a hard blow to the taJent. XIcol's followers also booked heavy losses. He failed to pilot a winner during the afternoon. There were only four starters In the third race. Chief Mlilikin, because of his known liking for muddy going, was at odds-on and well supported. After a tiresome delay at the post, caused by the fractlousness of Don Dorao and Chief Mlilikin, starter Holtman raised the barrier when he thought he had them In proper alignment. The only one to leave promptly, however, was Hector, Elastic following him five lengths back. Chief Mlilikin bolted to the outer rail and catching Don Domo pinned him there until the other two were fully a sixteenth in advance. Preston, by a liberal application of the whip, fought Chief Mlilikin away and set sail for the flying leaders. He closel a tremendous gap and forced Hector to a hard drive to outlast him to the finish. Chief Mlilikin also took a notion to run after trailing in the rear for the first quarter, and, heading Elastic, secured third money. After the finish the judges ordered that the entry of Chief Mlilikin be refused in future. The steeplechase resnlted In an easy victory for John Dillon. This horse fenced well and was favorod by the going. Frank Mc fell over the water jump and for a while it appeared as if his rider had been badly hurt. He came to after a lapse of several minutes and showed no ill-effects from his tumble. Pirate's Dance also fell, no damage resulting. Shipments Continue daily to Douglas Park and visitors who spent Sunday at the new plant In the Falls City, report that things are In shape for the reception of horsemen. The appointments of the track are complete In every particular. Among the stables quartered there, is that of H. R. Baker, who will probably send Broomhandle to the post in the handicap on the opening day. ' Triumphant was badly cut down in his race Saturday and will have to be thrown out of training for some time. F. Blrtel shipped four horses to Xew Orleans tonight where they will be rested until the beginning of the racing there. Jim Hale was shipped tonight to Knoxville, Tenn., where he will be turned out. "Lucky" Baldwin is at Lake Tahoe "LUCKY" BALDWIN IS AT LAKE TAH0E. "Reports have come recently from various points in Canada to the effect that 'Lucky Baldwin was sojourning in the Dominion in search of relief from a complication of diseases, the least of which was threatened blindness, and that his chances for recovery were so poor that the 'eminent physicians in charge of him' gave the opinion that the veteran horseman was beyond medical aid and that his case was a hopeless one," says the Los Angeles Evening Xews of August 21. The latest telegraphic information in this regard came last week from Winnipeg, Manitoba, and related the startling intelligence (?) as follows: 'Under the constant care of physicians who do not conceal their belief that his ease is a hopeless one, Ellas Jackson Baldwin, or 'Lucky' Baldwin, as lie is known throughout the length and breadth of America, is living in seclusion at Kort Rogue. He is suffering from palpitation of the heart and the doctors refuse to allow his friends to see him, because they fear agitation would be harmful.' All of which is absolutely without foundation, although this telegram has been widely printed, especially throughout the west. 'Lucky' Baldwin is enjoying life as much as is possible for one of ills advanced years at Lake Tahoe and is not unusually affected by any disease that threatens his life. " 'Lucky Baldwin has not been to Winnipeg or any other portion of Cauada In many months and the state of his health is not any more alarming at this time than in the last year. At about the time the dispatch referred to was sent throughout the country 'Lucky' Baldwin was a guest of his friend, Richard H. Cole, at dinner at the Angelus Hotel. Los Angeles, instead of being a recluse Tort Rogue, Canada. A few weeks ago he departed for Lake Tahoe to pass several -weeks at his hotel, which is under the management of M. The rain of yesterday left the Windsor track slow and lumpy today. Consequently, withdrawals were plentiful and the third race was declared off entirely. Another for four-year-olds and upward, at a mile, was substituted. Three favorites rewarded the talent and all of them won handily enough with the exception of Foxmead In the first, which was put to the hardest kind of a drive to beat out Operator, the 25 to 1 chance. The feature of the card was the handicap at five and a half furlongs, for two-year-olds. Mlnot appeared the best and rewarded the confidence of her backers by cantering home two lengths in front of Salvlsa. "Boosting" Of Ostrich Causes a Row "BOOSTING" OF OSTRICH CAUSES A ROW. The buying of Ostrich out of a selling race at Saratoga Saturday afternoon by John McGInnis, led to a , lively quarrel in the paddock after the race between McGinnis and John Ilynes, former trainer of the horse. McGinnis wanted the horse delivered to him without formality immediately after he was returned to the paddock, to the end that he might be cooled out by one of his (McGinnis') men. "Hynes, who was as angry as, a hornet over losing the horse, positively refused to yield the horse until McGinnis preduced an order from the judges directing him to," says the Morning Telegraph. "Hynes and McGinnis called each other names, and McGinnis assured the crowd which gathered to see the fun that he had $5,000 with which to make good any obligations he might contract, and that be had got It honestly. Hynes expressed doubt as to both propositions, and absolutely declined to take McGinnis' word for anything. Friends Intervened before anything serious came out of their quarrel. Hynes is riled at losing Ostrich because the Order colt, who won the Crescent City Derby thrae seasons back, is just rounding into condition. He is one of the serviceable platers in training. But McGinnis will have to bet heavily every time he starts Ostrich In a selling race. For Hynes and Sexton, the horse's former owner, swear they will make It hot for the young man from Brooklyn. If, however, McGinnis had not taken Ostrich Sexton would have lost him in another direction. Jack Bennet announced in the clubhouse after the horse was knocked down, that McGinnis anticipated him."
