Bookmakers Sadly Misjudge His 'Quality Fine Cloth Scores a Na'rrow Victory in -Twin City Handicap Grandpa Wins Steeplechase. New York, September 3. The splendid Labor Day program attracted another vast throng to Sheepshead Kay. I5tir for the threatening aspect of the weather, which kept many intending visitors away, the big in'closure would not have been able to accommodate the crowd. A heavy shower at noon .Hooded the track which, however, dried out rapidly under the rays of the sim and by the last race could be safely classed as fair. Two big stakes the Twin City Handicap and the Aumnmn Maiden and an Interesting steeplechase over the full course, adorned the card. Electioneer decisively confirmed his Futurity run- , ning of last Saturday by an unusually convincing victory In today's Autumn Stakes, at five furlongs. William Lakeland's gigantic Voter colt, was unexpectedly added at the last, moment, but the bookmakers made light of his pretensions and hunched the price against him from the beginning of speculating on the race. It was potent to the most unsophisticated of racegoers that the mere presence of the Futurity winner here in a race of this character for a comparatively small purse, indicated the supremest of confidence on the part of his owner and the result was that the ring was. swamped with thousands of wagers at 8 to 5 on a horse that won like a 1- to 10' shot. The layers mistakenly argued that both the -Short distance and the muddy going would prove serious" handicaps and they paid dearly for it. Electioneer so far outclassed the moderate lot opposed to him that he was able to show them the way home almost from the start, despite the generally admitted drawbacks of distance and track. Mr. Lakeland remarked to Foxhall Keene after the race that he did no believe- that his father (.Tames H. Keene), would permit any more outside services to Voter now that he had sired such a wonder as Klectioneer. The Twin City, which is one of the most valuable mjle and a quarter handicaps! of the season, attracted a big Held of high class performers. Dandelion, an added starter, was a receding favorite and his race was below par. Fine Cloth, at long odds, got up in the last stride to beat Neva Lee, another despised outsider. The gallant Dishabille was the only one of the select company of turf stars competing that ever got within striking distance of the leaders in the closing struggle and she could do mi better than finish a distant third. The reliable Grandpa scored another victory through the field, defeating this time a coining champion in Paul Jones, which on this occasion carried big wagers and finished third, the 1CK) to 1 chance. Agent, being second. A fortune in bets was lost on Malacca, which, in the opening race for two-year-olds, was backed almost off the boards. The Ziegler colt lost out by a narrow margin to Fish Hawk. Far West suddenly recovered his best form and made the odds-on favorite. .Tacquin, look cheap In the sixth furlong handicap. Harney Schreiber's Deutschland, tonweight, showed a brilliant turn of speed, but was unable to coaicede the weight. Onutas, which is almost invincible on the grass course, easily took a superior band of horses into camp In the closing race at one mile and an eighth, including Geranium, which ran a very bad race. Oiseau is lame and it is reKrted that he mav not lie able to fill any of his engagements this fall. Condensed History of the Twin City Handicap CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE TWIN CITY HANDICAP. The Twin City is now the most valuable of American autumn handicaps and this year's winner will reap for its owner almost as much money as did the winners of the Brooklyn and Suburban handicaps. If the ten named to start all run the net result to the winner will be $14,37:5. It has always been a race of sensations, falling to an extreme outsider when the Longfellow colt, Tom Martin, won it for Peter Fox in 2884 from nearly all the handicap stars of the day. Billy Lakeland, whose colt, Electioneer, won the Futurity yesterday, carried off the Twin City twice with his great campaigner. Exile. In more recent years the event was marked by an exciting dead heat between Ethelbert and Jack Point and in about the only race of his career down east in which he was, in condition to run to his true form McCbesney decisively defeated Hermis. Big Crowd Sees Racing at Windsor BIG CROWD SEES 'RACING AT WINDSOR. Detroit, Mich., September 3. Onlv one pronounced favorite won at Windsor today, but the large half-holiday crowd had no complaint to make. The well backed second choices that won caused the layers some uneasiness. In spite of the counter attractions in Detroit, the Windsor track drew a crowd that excelled that of the opening day and completely filled the grandstand and lawns. The race that attracted the most attention was the third on the card and Toots Mook, in view of her defeat of Charlie Eastman last week, was installed the choice and she flattered her backers by assuming a lead of three lengths after entering the stretch, where Fair Calypso caught her and from there on to the sixteenth post they were on even terms. Then Fair Calypso drew away, winning easily by a length with the favorite second and Granada third. Secret, in the last was the one successful favorite and he was doing his best at the end to stall off Cambridge, which had been trailing until on the stretch turn aud finished with a rush. The eastern division of the stable of W. T. Anderson arrived at the track this morning from Saratoga. Steeplechase jockey Brady arrived today from La-touia and will accept mounts during the meeting. W. II. Snyder, who has the contract on jockey Baird, has called the boy back to New York, declining to let him ride at Windsor. bookmaker Jim Davis was a visitor at the track today. Corrigan Horses Are Sent to Canada CORRIGAN HORSES ARE SENT TO CANADA. Cincinnati. 0., September 3. Edward Corrigan's stable was shipped tonight to Windsor. After that meeting his horses will lie raced at Toronto, returning to Latonia in Octeber. Aliout 100 horses will be rested up at Latonia for the fall meeting. The heaviest winners among the liookmakers during the long period here were Fred Cook, Ed Alvey anil Jim Davis. Joe Yeager left here, it is said, with winnings of $38,000. J. B. Hespess is reported to have been the heaviest individual loser. It is said that he is out of iiocket about $10.000. after having been at one time as much ahead of the game. Blue Coat's Stanch Performance BLUE COAT'S STANCH PERFORMANCE. The annual meeting of the Quebec Turf Club was held at Quebec Wednesday and Friday of last week. The attendance on lioth days was large aud the sport was thoroughly enjoyed. There were twelve races, sir each day, and three of them two handicaps and an allowance race each at a mile, were won by Hlue Coat, the four-year-old bay colt by Ben Strome Blue Jacket. On Wednesday Blue Co.it won the Town Plate in 1:40. On Friday be took the first race, the Merchant's purse, in 1:4SJ and scored bis second victory for the day in the fourth race, running the mile iu 1:40. Douglas Park's Opening: Big Crowd Sees Initial Racing at New Louisville Track DOUGLAS PARK'S OPENING. BIG CROWD SEES INITIAL RACING AT NEW LOUISVILLE TRACK. Handicap Feature Produces an Exciting Contest and Is Won by Miss Doyle Favorites Fare Badly Horses Arrive from Saratoga. Louisville, Ky., September 3. The Douglas Park Jockey Club inaugurated its initial meeting here today under favorable auspices. The program was one of good average quality all the way through and this, together with the holiday occasion, served to draw out one of the largust racing crowds ever seen in the Falls City. The extreme hot weather and some little tardiness In the transportation were drawbacks, but taken all in all, the day's sport was as satisfactory as could have been, desired and it seems to indicate that Hie new track Is bound to hold a place In popular favor. Twenty-two books were in line and these seemed inadequate to the volume of money. The starting was prompt and good in all the raees eseept the last, in which John Doyle refused to break and was practically left. He was eased up by his rider after the others had gone a furlong. Under new conditions and with a drying out track speculators naturally found it no easy matter to locate the successfnl horses and the winners were all quoted at liberal odds. The out-of-town contingent was almost wholly made up of racing people who eanie here from Latonia. The Douglas Park Handicap, of -$1,000 at one mile and a sixteenth, turned out to be one of the best races seen in many a day; Seven started and all of these had pronounced support. It was a tribute to the ability of the handlcapper that the favorite was. quoted at so long a price as 5 to 1. The race was won by Miss Doyle, which in a drive, beat John L. Inglis a half length. Devout, another well backed candidate, finished third. The race was one of no little spectacular Interest, as John L. InglN and Sir Russell, a horse that had been well backed by the local turf followers, led into the stretch. At the end, however, both of them tired and Miss Doyle, finishing with rare gameness, got the verdict. The disappointment of the race was Colonel Jim Douglas, owned by a local man and a favorite among racegoers. He will show Improvement, as with the ride he received today, he had scant chance to take down the long end of the purse. The finishes In most of the races were eloifk and exciting and, despite the fact that favorites met their Waterloo, the winners were loudly applauded and the enthusiasm was genuine. A special train of Clnclnnatlans helped to swell the attendance and these were reported to have been among the heaviest speculators on the day's races. The fastest time for a horse train was probablj: made when five carloads of racers arrived at Douglas Park this morning from Saratoga. They left' the Spa at an early hour Sunday morning Most of the horses In the lot were the property": of T. P. Hayes, J. O. Keene. II. E. Rowell, J. Griffin, W. Gum and James Arthur. The. latter brought -back two three-year-olds which he purchased while in the east. Arc Light, which gave promise of being a. good jumper and was shipped east by Arthur, returned with the outfit and was fired this morning. He will be thrown out of training for a time. That starter Dade will not tolerate any nonsense from riders was conclusively proven in the first race when he susiiended Aubuchon for seven days for trying to beat the barrier. Captain Jim Williams and his son "Wink" arrived today from Saratoga. Phil Finch, their mainstay at present in a racing way, will get here tomorrow. Commentiug on their eastern campaign. Captain Jim said: "We had plenty of good luck and then some bad. I could have sold Ram's Horn .for a good price shortly before his death but refrained from doing go on account of our attachment for him. It all breaks even In the long ran." Among today's visitors was Matt J. Winn, president of the American Turf Association. Mr. Winn stated that preparations were rapidly progressing for the care of visitors at the state fair, which will be held at Churchill Downs, beginning September 17. C. A. Ttlles was the only member of the firm of Cella, Adler & Tllles present for the opening. A detail of Pinkerton men, ably assisted by the local police force, cleared the track f objectionable characters and ejected several touts. Twenty Leading Jockeys TWENTY LEADING JOCKEYS. Nicol is still at the top in the jockey standing for the year. He leads Miller by three winning mounts and seven points In percentage. Miller, however, rode six winners to his four last week. They are In actual competition now and the work of the present week will therefore be more Interesting. Jockey Mountain, who is riding at Windsor, scored, the honors for last week in the matter of winning mounts. He got home in front eight times. P., DESERT CHIEF AND PHIL MAY. Former Retains His Best English Form While the Others Have Not Shown Up Well. Three steeplechasers that were prominent candidates for the Grand National Steeplechase at Liverpool, England, last spring,' have since been imported to this country and all have started. John M. P., Desert Chief and Phil May compose the trio. They were admittedly in the front rank- of Brithdi "timber-toppers and the experiment of importing such horses to race against the best American bred jumpers has been scanned with great interest by admirers of across country racing. It has long been assumed that English bred jumpers outclass our own, but It has been merely guesswork without proof. Phil May and Desert Chief have fenced and run well so far, but have failed to win. John M. P. won the Inaugural Steeplechase at Sheepshead Bay last Saturday. It was his debut in this country and it must be said that his performance was quite conclusive as to the horses that stood up aud finished behind him. It was not conclusive as to his two best antagonists, Delcanta and Balzac, both of which fell. One thing be established and that is that he retains the brilliant speed that characterized his performances In England.. This is satisfactory because it guarantees that when he meets our best steeplechasers it will be in form as good as the best he displaved over English courses. John M. P., is by Britannic (son of Zealot), out of Guiding Star, by Glen Arthur, she out of Star of the North, by Breadalbane. He was bred bv J. M. Purdon aud was foaled a bay colt iu 1899. "lie was altered as a yearling and was not raced until his four-year-old form In 1903, when, as the property of J. S. Morrison, he was once second, once third "and once unplaced, the three races having been run on the flat. Ills first start was at the Lingfield Park second Spring meeting, June 9, when he was unplaced for the Club Welter Plate at two miles. Next he was second to Maisie II., for the Club Open Long Welter Race at the Lewes summer meeting August 7. His third and last start for that year was for the Sutton Plate at the Gatwlck August meeting August 30, when he finished third, the race being won by Sir S. Scott's Series a neck in front of the late William C. Whitney's White Webbs, which was six lengths in front of John M. P. Three starts on the flat in 1904 was the extent of John M. P.'s occupation as a five-year-old. His first start was for the Stanley Plate at the Keinpton Park October meeting, October S. when he finished third, beaten a length and a neck. Then came his first triumph. It was for the Croome Plate at the Worcester Autumn meeting October 14. He won by a neck at the end of the mile and a half. His weight was 123 pounds. Then he finished third for the Cliff Plate, one mile and a half at the Folkestone October meeting. Saturday, October 29. In 1905 John M. P. was not raced. He spent the year schooling for steeplechasing under the direction of II . Nugent. He made his first start over the timbers at Windsor, January 5, of this year, winning the Eton Hurdle Handicap at two miles. He carried 175 pounds and the going was heavy. Following this he scored four straight wins in steeplechases. They were the Coventry Handicap Chase at Kemp-ton Park, Saturday, February 3, in which lie carried 170 pounds over the two miles course and beat Comfit ten lengths; the Open Chase at Hurst Park on February 10, in heavy going, when he carried 154 pounds and beat Desert Chief, Ills present stable companion, likewise carrying 154 pounds, thirty lengths over the three mile course iu 0:1S; the Liverpool Trial Chase at Sandown Park, March 1. when he beat Wolf's Folly a length and a half over the three and one-lialf miles course in 7:475, carrying 154 pounds; the open Chase at Hurst Park, March 10, when he lieat Shaun Aboo twenty lengths over the three-mile course, carrying 171 pounds. Then came his defeat in the Grand National Steeplechase Handicap over the Alutree Course of four miles and 850 yards at Liverpool March 30. His weight for this race was 104 pounds and he was the favorite at 31 to 1. He was going well forward when he slipped under the guard rails at. the canal turn and was out of it. The race was won by Ascetic's Silver and Phil May, which was brought over last spring by ".Mr. Cotton." finished eighth after falling at the last fence. John M. P.'s next and last start in England was in the Champion Chase of three miles at Liverpool March 31, the day following the Grand National. In this race he blundered aud finished fifth. He carried 172 pounds, the top weight. Here is a recapitulation of John M. P.'s performances abroad: Year. Age Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. This suggests that Billy Lakeland did not awake to a realization of his excellence until recently. His now famous colt is in the Flatbush Stakes and Sapphire Stakes at Sheepshead Bay. The Flatbush Is at seven furlongs and will be run next Saturday. His weight in this event is 120 pounds. Peter Pan, Ballot. Superman, Yankee Gun, Bat Mastersou, Ethon, Fountalnblue, Rio Graude, Oran. De Mund, Horace E.. Computer, Philander and Gretna Green are. also in this stake. The Sapphire is a five and a half furlongs dash for which Electioneer will have to carry 128 pounds. It is to he run Monday. September 10; Fountalnblue, Paumonok, Kentucky Beau, Montgomery, A'ox Popull, Zambesi, Philander, Arcite. Computer, Kllliecrankle and Ale-theuo appear to be the best of those likely to oppose him. Unless entered in sonic of the Brooklyn Jockey Club's stakes, which closed August 20, the entries not having been published as yet, he has no engagements at Gravesend, nor does he appear to have any at Belmont Park or Brighton Beach. It Is quite probable that Lakeland is philosophic enough to think his colt has done enough for one year anyhow and will be content with nominating him for the big stakes of next year, which will close iiext January. In making a statement to the New York Herald after the running of the Futurity. Billy Lakeland explained why Electioneer had lolted iu his previous race against Peter Pan and other good ones. He said: ''.My colt hit himself every time he ran, and even today he IcuiTed' himself. I knew that on a straight course there was less chance for him to hit himself than on a turn. He lost the Flash Stakes at Saratoga by 'running out' to escape the pain. I thought he had a good chance, and could not see why Peter Pan should be preferred to Electioneer. The reported fast trial given to the colt is not my style my horses run their best In races, not trials. He was- game and well ridden, and the rest speaks for Itself." May Rowe a Supposed Good One MAY ROWE A SUPPOSED GOOD ONE. May Rowe. the filly by Meddler Auricoma. carded to make her racing debut in the Futurity, but withdrawn, was bred by John B. Madden at Hamburg Place and was the star of the fillies sold by him as yearlings in 1003. C. E. Rowe paid $1,500 for her at the auction at Sheepshead Bay, June 23. 1005. She was sent to Memphis last fall, where she was broken and highly tried. She was backward in her trainiug last spring, but reiorts from the east are to the effect that she lias been working well of late. May Rowe has no other stake engagements at Sheepshead Ray. Her yearling half brother, a chestnut colt by Plaudit, was sold at Saratoga on August 14 last, to C. F. Clark for $600. Auricoma. the dam. was a good racer. She won among oilier races-the Lassie and Select Stakes and Senorita and Fresno w'ere among the good ones she defeated. She is the dam of Beaucatcher, Red Fox. Slow Poke. Jueoma. all winners, ami of Golden Rod IL. which produced Silverdale, a racehorse of great speed and quality und winner of the St. Louis Derby of 1001. To Play Polo in Saratoga Infield TO PLAY POLO IN SARATOGA INFIELD. There is some talk of levelling off a portion of the Infield at Saratoga , to be used for, polo games next season. The - surveys that have been made show there is ample room for a playing field without interfering in any way with the steeplechase course, and strong efforts will be made to get the management to consent to the plan. "It would be a great attraction to thousands who are now compelled to drive to the other end of town." says the New York Sun. "The games could be played after the races and could be perfectly viewed from the grandstand. Several of the directors of the Saratoga Racing Association have expressed themselves in favor of the plan, and if official consent is secured work will be begun to level off the ground, with the idea of getting the sod on again before cold weather sets in." H. B. Duryea Owns Quesal's Yearling H. B. DURYEA OWNS QUESAL'S YEARLING. Herman B. Duryea Is the owner of the yearling half brother to Electioneer, winner of the Futurity at Sheepshead Bay last Saturday. This youngster is bv Golilcrest, out of Quesal and was foaled April 7, 1003. He Is, with the exception of a few white hairs on his off fore heel, a solid bay. He was sold with six other yearlings from the late Major B. G. ThoniHS' Dixinna Stud, at. Sheepshead Bay. on July 3, and was knocked down to Air. Duryea's bid or $1.50O. lie was at that price considered a great bargain, in the light of the achievements of his other half brothers Tommy Atkins, Trumpet. Maximo Gomez, Quorum, David II. and Trogon: so the performance of Electioneer must make him "look mighty good" to .Mr. Duryea. Six Mackay Yearlings Under Lease SIX MACKAY YEARLINGS UNDER LEASE. The Newcastle Stable has leased from Clarence H. There probably was a place price against Toots Mook in the early stages of the betting, but it was "out" at the close. E. F. AA, Chicago. As a matter of fact there were two Rainey entries in the Futurity, each of the two brothers having a starter. An entry is one or more horses. Had either De Mund or Horace E. won, the bettor would no doubt have claimed a winning bet and as it was, lost. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. The crack two-year-old Salvidere has no stake engagements at Sheepshead Bay. Among the horses which will race as two-year-olds in the string of Julius Bauer next season are the first foals of that trio of turf stars. Hatasoo, Renin and Disadvantage. All three are by Previous, the Produce of Reina being a colt while the other two are fillies. The long rest awarded Roseben appears to have restored the champion sprinter to his almost Invincible form of last fall. He has several stake engagements at Sheepshead Bay, but several, the An-naul Champion for instance, are over too much ground .for him and it is quite probable that the seven furlongs Flight Stakes, to be run September 13, will be the only stake he will be started for. In this he will have to carry only 123 pounds. f GET ABOARD MY ONE-HORSE SPECIAL, TUESDAY!
