Killaloe, at 40 to 1, Makes Court Dress and Pope Joan Look Cheap Inquisitor Takes Flying Handicap Koerner Is Left on the Favorite. Now York. September T. The racing at Sheeps-head Bay today was marked by a series of disastrous upsets. Running Water, at a prohibitive price, was the' only successful favorite. Temaceo captured the opening number at 8 to 1. The second went to Running -Water and the talent braced up only to be stunned by one of the biggest fiascos of the year when Killaloe cantered home in the Great Filly Stakes at odds of 40 to 1, with the Keene pair, Court Dress and Pope Joan backed to 1 to 10, trailing in disgrace. Nest Inquisitor earned a head victory in the Flying Handicap nt 5 to 1, thanks to Miller's, brilliant . jockeyshlp. ,MIss Crawford, at .TO to 1, lieat a first-cjass field of handicap horses',, including Co Between, Inferno, Froper, Angler and others, nt a mile and a furlong in the fifth, and Sir Ralph, at SO to 1, wound up a disastrous and bewildering day's racing by nosing out Onatas, a superior performer on the grass, which carried limit wagers at odds-on by the entire plunging contingent in vain endeavors to recoup. Killaloe made the Keene pair look dirt cheap in the' Great Filly Stakes, shootlug away from Court Dress nt the end as If Bhe was anchored and beating Tope Joan, the sensational runner-up in the Futurity, away. off. There, were several incidents that nroused. bitter comment- atnong the spectators, chief among which was "the leaving at the post of Brookdale Nymph, the favorite for the Flying Handicap. Koerner, who has been left many times on favorites in the past . ha'd the mount on the Whitney Ally and is again held responsible. The stewards are investigating the matter. Starter Mars Cassidy and. Robert Pinkerton were summoned before them immediately after the race and the same sinister rumors are current that nt leu (led his- being left at the post on Puritan Girl at Saratoga . and on Victoria B. at Brighton. Close observers' at the start declared that Koerner deliberately pulled up . with .Brookdale Nymph and he only permitted ber to canter the journey thereafter, tactics exactly similar to those he pursued jvith Puritan Girl. The ring won a tremendous snm on the day. The Cella books are reported to have cleared $75,000, Maxey.Blumenthnl $18,000 and others in proportion. One notable wager was $5,000 against $15,000 on Go Between, made by J. W. Gates in person witli Cella, who then offered to htinch the price for nn-othpr $5,000 which the Croesus declined. J. C., -Cooley's two-year-old filly Saghalien died today of spinal meningitis. Condensed History of the Great Filly Stakes CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE GREAT FILLY STAKES. . While he Is a bit alarmed for the safety of personal friends on botli sides of the conflict in Cuba, Secretary Hernandez Mejla of the Cuba Jockey Club has no fears that the rebellion will interfere with plans for racing at Havana next winter. Vp to date it has not retarded the building of the race course. "I cabled to Havana for reliable news yesterday, and the answer cfl hie that there seemed to le no cause for alarm, as the force of eighty-seven men is still working on the plant," said the Secretary. "Of course, if tilings get too squally around Havana there will be a setback, but in case the present government is successful in putting down the rebellion or in case of Amerlcau intervention before the insurgents reach the capital, which I think rather likely, there will be no delay. In any event I do not expect a serious effect on the situation as regards racing. No. matter which side triumphs we shall have racing, for the people are enthused over the sport." Miss Doyle Scores Again: Shows Her Heels to Sir Russell for the Second Time at Louisville MISS DOYLE SCORES AGAIN. SHOWS HER HEELS TO SIR. RUSSELL FOR THE SECOND TIME AT LOUISVILLE. Five of the Six Favorites Successful J. B. Hespesg Wins Two Purses Zinfandel Brings Him Much in Wagers Gossip. . Louisville, Ky., September 5. With an improved track and a good program there was considerably, more snap und vim to the racing here today than characterized that of yesterday. Constant work is gradually putting the track into excellent condition, as was shown by the fast time made In the handicap. Speculators again had the lietter of the argument with the bookmakers. Favorites won all of the races with the exception of the handicap, for which Miss Doyle, the winner, was a well bncked second choice. A feature of the handicap was the plunge onvSIr Russell, which somewhat upset the betting on other candidates. The gelding bad worked well before the meeting began and this was responsible for the confidence shown lu his ability both on the opening day in the Douglas Park Handicap and In today's race. He showed a fine turn of speed and it may have been partly through lack of condition that he tired at the finish. Miss Doyle's performance was more than a creditable one. She. had a trifle the worst of the start, which, however, was a fair one, and besides she was bothered on the first turn. Outrun as she was after these mishaps, it required no little gameness to get to the leaders; and win in handy-fashion. Old Stone's defeat could largely be attributed to a weak ride on the part of; Rice, who Is not strong enough to handle the horse advantageously. Rice was put up for the reason that Goldblatt's Jockey, Aubucbon, is enduring one week's suspension for misbehavior at the post. The colors of J. B. Respess and T. P. Hayes were In evidence today for the first time on a Western Jockey Club track since the formation of the American Turf Association. The Respess colors were carried to victory on two occasions and with considerable profit to the owner, both of his starters being backed extensively by him here and elsewhere. Against Zinfandel he got a very liberal price, but after her victory the bookmakers became chary and he was forced to accept short odds about Carthage. T. P. nayes was represented by Red-gauntlet. The colt did not show to advantage, but will Improve. The connections of Edwin T. Fryer attempted a coup with him in the fifth race. The colt was undoubtedly in prime condition and probably would have won but for Interference. There is a sharp angle at the six furlongs start and when over seven horses are lined up at the barrier there is crowding. Yesterday Mamie O. had her leg broken by" a mix-up there. Today half of the field tangled in a knot immediately after the release of the barriar from which Edwin T. Fryer suffered much and It was directly responsible for his failure to finish. In the money. Sister Huffman had clear sailing throughout and this aided her to win. Numerous arrivals came in today at Churchill Downs and the stables there are now almost filled. Among the horses arriviug today were several owned by Ed. Corrigan. The bidding up of winners which was inaugurated yesterday coutlnued today. Amberita, which won the third race, was raised $400 over her entered price and Carthage, victor in the closing race, was bid np $300. 'J. K. Miller did the bidding in both instances. The horses were retained by their owners with advance bids. J. McClernand, owner of Oberon, also took a hand in the game and claimed Tarp from J. B. Lewman at a cost of $900. Eleven horses, the property of E. Trotter, arrived today from Windsor and will be raced here. 'With the consignment came Jockey Cherry, who will do the riding for the stable. T. P. Hayes said today that Jockey Austin waa rapidly improving and would probably accept mounts next week. Fred Cook has tired of the game here and will depart for New York tomorrow morning. Alderman Batt Not Dead, as Reported ALDERMAN BATT NOT DEAD, AS REPORTED. Detroit, Mich., September 5. Alderman Batt, the four-year-old chestnut gelding, by Mont' d'Or Pret-tiwit, is not dead as reported by Goodwin's Turf Guide. C. C. McCafferty, who bought the gelding from C. E. Durnell at Ascot. Park last winter and raced him once afterward at Oakland, said today: "Alderman Batt is alive and well in my stable at Oakland. I intend to start him in the next Burns Handicap and for that reason did not bring him east after the earthquake brought the San Francisco racing season to an abrupt closing in April. He has been running out this summer and I have had good reports from him all along." Business Men Would Save Oakley Track BUSINESS MEN WOULD SAVE OAKLEY TRACK. Cincinnati, O., September 5. A party of Cincinnati gentlemen, well known in business circles, are interested in saving Oakley racetrack from being turned Into an industrial community. They have set on foot a movement which may result in an organization which will probably be known as the Cincinnati Gentlemen's Driving Club. During the racing season at Saratoga A. J. Welch and Orlando Jones, owners of the track, priced the property to a local real estate agent for $185,000. It Is now understood that the organization of business men, headed by Fred Guethlelm, has taken this option. Solon Shingle Improperly Ridden Oratorian Goes Lame and Causes New Book to Be Made. Detroit, Mich., September 5. The feature of the card at Windsor today was the handicap for all ages at a mile and a sixteenth. Cholk Hedrick was Installed the favorite and he justified the confidence placed In him. Solon Shingle, with a better ride, would have won. Dealy did not persevere with his mount and the favorite nipped him at the finish and won by a nose. W. J. Young has sold to L. E. Shinbarger, the three-year-old filly Galetta, by George Kessler Court Dance for a private consideration. She will be raced In the "bushes." Edward Corrigan arrived today from Louisville and will remain several days. His horses will race during the remainder of the Windsor meeting, then lie shipped to Toronto where they are liberally entered in the stakes. Plaisanterie Dies in England PLAISANTERIE DIES IN ENGLAND. "Sir Tatton Sykes has suffered a great loss by the death at Sledmere Stud of the famous mare Plaisan-terie, which, it will be remembered, won the Cesarewitch and Cambridgeshire in 1885, sharing with Foxhall the honor of 'being the only horse to carry off. the double event in the same year," says the London Sporting Life. "As a two-year-old in France, she ran three times, winning on her first appearance and running a dead heat with Barberine on her second appearance. Before coming over to England to compete in the Cesarewitch she ran thirteen times, being successful on no fewer than twelve occasions, her only defeat being by a short head by Martin Pecheur II., at VIncennes, included in her victories being the Jubilee Prize of Baden, a gold cup with about $10,000 added. Weighted at 100 pounds she won the Cesarewitch in easy style by two lengths, Xema lielng second and Postscript third. A fortnight later, carrying 124 pounds, which included a penalty of 14 pounds, and starting second favorite, she won the Cambridgeshire from twenty-six opponents, Bendigo being second, beaten two lengths, and Eastern Emperor third, whilst St. Gatien, the favorite, was fifth. "At the end of her racing career. Sir .Tatton Sykes bought her for breeding purposes, and her first produce was Childwlck, which was by St. Simon, and, for which as a yearling, the late Sir J. Blundell Maple gave the record price of $30,000, but iie turned out a valuable horse. He did not run at two years old, and on his first appearance, in the Prince o Wales' Stakes at Ascot, finished third to Red Ensign and Tressure. In the Limekiln Stakes at Newmarket Houghton Meeting, however, he beat Orme by three parts of a length, and subsequently won the Doveridge Plate at Derby. As a four-year-old he only ran twice, being beaten in the Gold Vase at Ascot, but atoning for this by winning the Cesarewitch later in the year, beating Callistrate by four lengths. Chlldwick was undoubtedly the best produce of Plainsanterie. All her foals brought big prices when sold, Raconteur fetching $15,000, Ste Adresse $11,500, Hawkswick $17,000, and Topiary $15,000, but with the exception of the first named none of them did much to Justify the outlays. At the time of her death Plaisanterle was twenty-four years old." Topiary, which is by Orme and foaled In 1901, Is now in August Belmont's Nursery Stud at Lexington, Ky. Mr. Belmont bought her about the time lie purchased Rock Sand and she came over with that great horse In July. She was bred to Melton last spring ufter foaling a bay colt by Bushey Park. Lucrece now has at her side a handsome suckling and she was bred hack to Lord Esterling last spring. For the yearling and suckling Mr. Demoville has had reasonable offers, but as yet has not sold .them. This mare, it will be recalled, is also the dam of Gfebrgia Baldwin, which came to Chicago an obscure maiden in 1904, won two races in sensational style and then died; Reserves Name of Electioneer's Buyer RESERVES NAME OF ELECTIONEER' S BUYER. Not all ot the people with puritanical Ideas as. to horse racing ami Iietting on contests between horses people with notions such as the Rev. A. S. Gregg, of Washington, entertains live in the United States. There are a few of them in England and elsewhere. Abroad as well as at home they have succeeded in agitating the subject until the patience of sensible,, liberal-minded people lias been sorely tried. They have ranted throngji the London press with' so great a disregard for facts that "Old Blue," one of the best informed and 'most versatile writers on racing In England, lias seen fit to pen the foliowjng which was recently published in the- London Sporting Life, and which is apropos- to conditions iu this country: The abuse of sport is becoming quite an art nowadays, especially in connection with betting. It has been assailed more often than one cares to remember by writers eminent and otherwise. As a rule, sportsmen have hitherto regarded these tierce denunciations with pitying silence, but not always. Now and again they have felt constrained to expose the absurdity of some people' describing betting as the sole and only object and aim of followers of the Turf. etc. Two distinguished writers. Mr. Holt Schooling and Mr. Guy Thome, have lately had a deal to say on the subject of betting. The first-named gentleman orates .on its 'folly.' while Mr. Tliorne sighs; because "every branch of sport is Imperilled and besmirched by betting." Botli avoid any sort of the usual claptrap, and their words are their convictions. But (as Mr. Thome rightly says) "mealy generalities are of no use." What we want Is the convincing testimony of proof. Yet, in the main, lie lias dealt with, nothing but generalities, and forgotten to" supply the- proof At any rate.-, hp lias failed to convince most people that modern betting is anything more than the accessoire of sport. And the subtle way In which lie tries to discriminate between betting, wagering, and gambling is too rich for anything. As a matter of fa'ct, essays upon sporting morality whether imbedded in the pages of a magazine or published independently, have never yet done ' any good. Nor was the elevation of a community's purity ever yet effected either by Act of .Parliament or by the pen of a journalist. And it is certainly idle for any writer to deal with such a subject as the deterioration ot sporting" integrity without "verifying his facts." That is to say. it is necessary tor him to mention names and dates, to cry aloud and spare not, and to be' precise In his particu-larisatiori of alleged evil deeds:. It is instructive-that both the gentlemen above-mentioned fall in these respects. Mr. Schooling, indeed, contents himself with denouncing betting as an evil of the worst kind, because it is begat of folly. It may interest him to learn that a few years ago the Calcutta Diocesan Conference with the Metropolitan at its head spent a whole day in trying to discover what wan wrong about gambling, but altogether failed. Exactly; Mr. Tliorne is bold, enough to avoid taking ja puritanical view of betting, but not so Mr. Schooling. This eminent statistician talks, as if to wagering any sort of bet Is simple sin. Nonsense. One of England's greatest headmasters recently said: "I cannot see that it is wrong in Itself to bet. To say .that a man who plays whist-for threepenny points commits a Kin. is, in my judgment, to strain the law of morality almost to snapping." Wlio can, gainsay? And what is the difference between playing whist for 3d. points and backing a horse for a small sum? . As" regards betting being foolish, what does Mr. Schooling mean by "foolish?" Is Stock Exchange speculation foolish, or drinking, or smoking, or a hundred and one -other tilings many people do respecting which there Is much divergence of opinI6n? Clearly ( it depends upon' which side you look at if. Some people tell us there is no happy .mean between strict teetotallsm and drunkenness; but who .believes this? By a parity of reasoning, therefore, the conclusions .reached in regard to betting largely depend on the temperament- and prejudices, of every individual. And It would be interesting" to know why Mr: Schooling inveighs against letting so heavily, but takes sedulous care to- leave Stock Ex. change gambling alone. One fears his very evident prejudices on the whole question of betting affects both' ills arguments and ills conclusions. And I should- like to' ask him this: "If you may buy cprii in hope of a rise, which is the essence of commerce; why may you not stake" 1 on a horse and sin not?" In either case the wroug turn may upset you,- of course, but there is. this difference the one transaction, supposing you can' pay the" difference, is moral, and the other is ""not. Or, again, the racing man who goes in for shady' tactics is promptly kicked out of- his club, but If the business man tells you what he knows will ruin you all in tho way of business; of course Is he equally tabooed? Not a lilt of it, lie is dubbed a sharp business' man. Two blacksalp not make a white, I know, but, please, let the opponents of betting be fair and logical. To his credit be it said. Mr. GUy Thome, who has seen- men and cities, fights shy of such argument: He tells us, what we all know, that Irresponsible betting is the bane of sport. But lie forgets that sportsmen themselves have been agitating for years for reform. If either the Jockey Club, or even Parliament would cither give us a system of licensed bookmakers, or assist sportsmen to cleanse the Augean stable In a fitting manner, the evil Mr. Guy Tliorne waxes eloquent over would speedily dls appear, lie Is justified, perhaps, in exposing the. seamy side of sports, yet does not scandal and demoralising iullui'iii'cs obtain In every walk or galloji of life? The Bar. the Bench; the Senate. Literature, aye, even the Church Itself by his own showing are all more or less contaminated. Surely, it is no-compliment to ills fellow countrymen to tell them in effect that they are: so deficient-in strength as to .fall a prey to the temptations which thousands withstand daily. In other words, arc sportsmen to avoid a duty because it' may be hampered with certain perils to the covetous, the weak, or the self-indulgent? Nor can I help thinking that he has grossly exaggerated the betting evil in connection with general sport, just as he did in relation to drink.- Being an enthusiast, he lets his pen run riot, so to speak. Anyway, he will find it difficult to bring proof In the majority of cases he mentions. Nothing will ever stop betting of some sort or the other. Man is unquestionably a gaming animal. The very energy which makes us strive to rise in life is twin-brother to the spirit which makes men gamblers'. We have' done nincli in England' to suppress such dens of iniquity as still flourish at Baden Baden, Hoinburg,- Monte Carlo, etc., and the only open gaming which exists for sportsmen Is that which is decried by Mr. Guy' Tliorne and others. Nor is-betting 'the unmitigated evil these well-meaning people try to make out. It certainly Is not to those who have seen trente et quarante played in Germahv, baccarat in Paris, monte in Mexico, and faro and bridge both in England. and America. Betting about the speed and endurance of men or horses, moreover, is unuestionably the noblest form of gambling betting. If you like in existence. All the same, sportsmen are by no means madly anxious to bet on every little sport and pastime, as alleged. To hear some people talk, it would seem they are constrained by a spell Hi that end. lrankly speak, ing. 1 do not believe general sport is contaminated by betting in half the degree mentioned. It Is easv to go in for platitudes, and to speak of such-and-such a sport beiug spoiled by ltetting, but. that is not proof. Not long since Mr. Thome spoke of golf clubhouses as "little better than shebeens." and asserted that these dens of wickedness Were in the south and southwest of England. When pressed to "verifv his facts'," he preserved a discreet silence. And I think he would have even greater difficulty in verifying some of tlie assertions he makes iu connection with betting and sport. And it is amusing to note that both ho aud Mr. Schooling condemn betting in degree, so to speak. Making a wager is not an evil, according to Mr. Thome; and Mr. Schooling onlv condemns habitual and petty gambling. Itut, sur'elv, if betting is wrong per sc. people are little sinners "who even make an occasional wager. The fact is. the love of sport, of which betting is an inevitable accompaniment. Is an important national trait. Where a man can afford to bet no harm is done; if lie cannot, and still persists In doing so, he' is a fool. Is not speculation the very essence of commerce? And what Is the difference between gambling on the Stock Exchange and on the turf? Adopting Mr. Schooling's logic woukl .deprive every man of every luxury, on the novel ground that his poorer neighbor might be tempted. AVe are continually being told that betting is a prolific source of crime, and so it very likely Is. Itut what alout Stock Exchange gambling? When are Mr. Schooling and Mr. Tliorne going to Indict this practice? I shall be told that a tu quoque rejoinder of this nature disproves nothhig, and is not argument, but is It not? If I were to .open a crusade against the commercial evils of today, (icople. would' Iatiglf nif? to scorn,' yet pure gamblings such as goes on rftiy : day before luncheon Is not a bona fide elcment'ili ' trade. Nor could it be stopped without injury being done to certain .important business people. Simi-larly. any law affecting betting could only be carried out unequally. Altolish office betUiig. for Instance; and -what would be the result? Simply the creation of secret betting places, plaeliig: a great temptation iti the way of the police to levy blackmail. For the rest, it is' absurd to attribute much of the so-called concomitant, evils' to bettin!;. A niiin "who "would be tempted to steal for gambling purposes wonhV be tempted to steal in any case and for any purpose. Uuaer this heading, wha did a well-known Metro- ) politan.- magistrate say only a short time ago? "Eight out of every ten culprits who attribute their downfall to betting really had nothing whatever to do with it," Betting has ever existed in some..form or other, and always will. It is part and parcel of human uaturo. . Knowing this. It is idle of anybody to take up their Sparable against betting. If, as alleged,, all kinds of sport are". in jeopardy from the practice, how reconcile-' this-fact-with the amasing increase of most sports and pastimes . iu popularity since 1SS7? But arc they?. I for ono take leave to doubt it. Such conclusions have been discussed with absurd gravity by people who -.ought to have known better than to have accepted them seriously.
