Entree ' Wins From Ironsides in Reapers Stakes Claim of Foul Not Allowed Maxie Witt Breaks Down Jumpers Fall. New York, September C. Another high-class card, including two ancient fixtures, was down for decision at Sheepshead Bay this afternoon. The weather was perfect and the attendance immense, being swelled by a big contingent of newcomers, attracted to the track by the notoriety given to the previous day's amazing succession of winning long shots, and bent on getting rich quick. Favorites and outsiders shared equally, however, in todays victories. The layerti received a "break" and were left with clean sheets by the win of Carew, the 00 to 1 shot, in the fifth race. The Dash Stakes, for two-year-olds, at five furlongs and the Reapers, for three-year-olds, at one mile and three-sixteenths, had their twentieth renewal and both furnished plenty of incident. The Juvenile fixture, was a particularly interesting and exciting race. It marked the first success of E. S. Burke, Jr., the wealthy young Clevelander with his high-priced W. II. Daniel. The finish was thrlllingly close, the rejuvenated W. II. Daniel, which had been added to the field at the last moment, barely getting the verdict from Yankee Gun and Pauraonok, the three passing the winning post short heads apart. " Entree, the receding favorite, won the Reapers in a. hard, .drive from the ungainly Ironsides. Miller was linable to do Ironsides full Justice, ne ran Well at intervals only. When he found it impossible to keep the Whitney horse from boring out on the last turn he pulled him up abruptly. This looked bad for Entree, which passed Ironsides at that point and also afforded Miller an excuse for claiming it foul against the winner. The stewards were a long time confirming the original placing. Maxie Witt broke down in the race or the result might have leen different. Jack Martin declared that Brady's horse was galloping along easily with a clear lead when one of his forelegs gave way nnd he was forced to pull him up. Much disappointment was expressed over the withdrawal of Barney Schrelber's Kealon. The majority of the experts had picked him to win the stake. Roseben, the sprinting phenomenon picked up his 137 pounds and performed a marvelous stunt in the opening dash at six furlongs, running under a pull throughout and winning in l:12i, was in itself a noteworthy feat, but what was more remarkable was the astonishing ease in the manner of accomplishment and the certainty that the champion could have smashed the slx'furlong record to smithereens had he been permitted to extend himself. The steeplechase was a chapter of accidents. Of the twplve horses that started on the long and Irying journey through the field, only six of the numler came back with their riders. Garterknot set such a pace from the outset that half of them came to grief early in the race and the others were strtlng out a sixteenth of a mile apart. For a wonder no one was injured. Expansionist, well backed, came home alone, after the pacemaker had galloped himself weary and finally toppled over the twelfth jump from pure exhaustion. Suicidal pacing tactics were employed with Grapple under his 140 pounds in the closing race, over the grass course, and they beat the Metropolitan Handicap winner. Miller, riding "Father Bill" Daly's Inconsistent Sailor Boy with his usual brilliancy, landed him in front of the badly handled Drake horse with nothing to spare. C. It. Ellison's James Reddlek, which was expected to acquit himself well on the soft grass course, ran last throughout. Garner, who rode California King, was suspended for six days by the stewards for cutting across Entree at the start in the. Reapers Stakes. Expansionist was bid up in driblets of $50 at a crack from $500 to $750 by an unknown man after his victory in the steeplechase. The stable retained him with an additional $5 raise. Top Price for Half Brother to Flip Flap: "Whitey" Langdon Gets Him for $1,100 - Thirty-Four Yearlings Average Only $229 TOP PRICE FOR HALF BROTHER TO FEE? FLAP "Whitey" Langdon Gets Him for $1,100 Thirty-four Yearlings Average Only $229. New York, September C. The thoroughbred yearlings from the Monnleta, Trade Wind, Sunny Slope, Oakley and other studs brought moderate prices at today's auction sale In the Sheepshead Bay paddocks. Of the forty-two catalogued four were not shown and four failed to elicit a bid. The remaining thirty-four head brought a total of $7,775, an average of about $229. "Whitey" Langdon paid the top price of $1,100 for a half brother to his crack threo-year-old filly Flip Flap. The summary: PROPERTY OF MESSRS. A. E. HUNDLEY & SON, MONNIETA STUD, DANVILLE, KY. The United Hunt and Steeplechase Association has granted dates, October 25, 27 and 29, for a steeplechase meeting at Ben-nings to the United Hunt Club. Mr. Belmont has received a communication from General J. F. Bell, chief of staff of the United States Army at Washington, to the effect that the military authorities would co-operate heartily with the Hunt Club in getting up races exclusively for army officers. Four Windsor Favorites Finish First: La Gloria Wins the Handicap for Sprinters-Starter Dwyer Has Good Chance for Gun Prize FOUR WINDSOR FAVORITES FINISH FIRST. La Gloria Wins the Handicap for Sprinters Starter Dwyer Has Good Chance for Gun Prize. Detroit, Mich., September C. Fonr favorites won for the followers of form at Windsor today. The other winners came from the second choices, making it in all a good day for the public. The handicap for all ages at three-quarters of a mile brought out the best in the sprinting division at the track, the winner turning up In La Gloria, backed from 8 to 5 to 3 to 2, at post time. La Gloria, with a great burst of speed, rushed to the front closely followed by Auroceiver, which, after going a half mile, gave it up. "Pa" Bradley's Eminola, well rated by Goldstein, took up the chase, landing the second place easily by a length from Goldmate. Next to the last of the shoots for the Highland Park loving cup came up today. Messrs. Dwyer and Sumpter are now tied for the prize, Messrs. Hendrle, Parmer and McMillan being close up. The final shoot will take place at Windsor before the close of the present meeting. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Colonial Girl will probably be bred to Adam next spring. Sam Hildreth has Guiding Star going good at Gravesend. The bidding up of Fish Hawk seems apt to have an aftermath. Far West appears to have been materially benefited by his long rest. Jockey Wilson says Agent is a heavy-headed gelding and hard to ride. Water Pearl is galloping satisfactorily for trainer Joyner at Sheepshead Bay. Dick Havey is starting the runners only at Butte. Said the harness horses made life a burden for him. W. Gould Brokaw's annual steeplechase meeting will be held at Nirvana on election day, in November. The Turf Benevolent Association will have a benefit entertainment at the Hippodrome in New York Sunday evening, September 23. The guns of the pencil-pushers In the press stand at Sheepshead Bay are trained on Nicol again this year. Why the prejudice? , In preparation for the Century Stakes, weight for age, which will be run tomorrow at Sheepshead Bay, The Picket worked a mile and a half in 2:35. For some Infraction of the rules John Cavanagh, the ringmaster at Sheeppshead Bay, has suspended Jack Adier, the announcer. His place was taken by Thomas Flynn. Four Horses Noses Apart: Finish in the Handicap at Douglas Park Thrills the Regulars FOUR HORSES NOSES APART. FINISH IN THE HANDICAP AT DOUGLAS PARK THRILLS EVEN THE REGULARS. Jockey Mclntyre la Kicked While at the Post on Platoon Jockey E. Rice Is' Substituted Defeat of Toboggan Calls for an Investigation. Louisville, Ky., September C. A rattling contest in the six furlongs handicap, with the first four horses finished noses apart, the winner getting the verdict on the nod, made even case-hardened professional turf followers feel some thrill of excitement at Douglas Park today. The race in the adjustment of weights exhibited another of the many similar achievements that have given Secretary Nathanson prestige as one of the best handicappers la the country. It was an open betting affair with Platoon, Hector, Meadowbreeze and Hannibal Bey all supported at liberal odds. An accident at the start caused a considerable delay and put the crowd on the anxious seat as to whether bets would be declared off or not. The field was a large one and the track at the starting point is so narrow that it was with difficulty all the horses could be gotten into line. In the skirmishing for positions, rrincess Orna kicked Jockey Mclntyre, who was up on Platoon, on the leg. Mclntyre was so badly injured that E. Rice was substituted. The Jndge9 followed the Western Jockey Club rule In the matter which states that when the horses have left the paddock, they are in the hands of the starter and all bets stand. The start was prompt but ragged, not more than jir.lfthe horses having , any chance by the time they were in motion. Meadowbreeze, Hector, Colonel Jim Douglas and Platoon made It anybody's race to the furlong post, where Hector began to tire and it looked as though Colonel Jim Douglas might win. Meadowbreeze, however, was pressing him closely, and right at the end Hannibal Bey and Harry Scott both came with a rush. The former was going the gamest and secured the verdict by a nose, a like distance separating Harry Scott from Meadowbreeze with Colonel Jim Douglas several Inches back. Four favorites were defeated. The chief loss entailed by their failures was in the opening nnmber when S. W. Streett's Toboggan was unable to finish in the money. The judges were displeased over his poor showing and sent for the owner to explain. Streett laid the blame to jockey Seder, who, In turn, claimed that the horse failed to show much speed at any stage of the race desipte his vigorous urging. The judges have taken the race under investigation and are probing further. After the finish of the fifth race n. McCarren bid up Demo, the winner, to $1,200, an advance of $400, and secured her. Demo formerly was trained by Hugh McCarren and was claimed at Latonia by Frank Doss, acting for C. Heifers, iu whose name she has been running since. Frank Doss bid up Savolr Falre in the last race $500 over his entered price of $400, but failed to get him, the owner making an advance bid. Jockey Mclntyre was severely injured by being kicked while at the post and will be kept out of the saddle for some time. J. II. Baker arrived today in advance of twelve horses that he has shipped from Windsor. W. E. Cotton arrived today with four horses. The other eight comprising his string were shipped to California from Latonia. Jockey Treubel sent word that he would arrive here on Friday and would be in condition to accept mounts. He is at present resting at French Lick Springs. Harry Scott, which ran a sparkling race in the handicap, Is reported to have worked three-quarters in less than 1:13 before the racing began here. Seattle's Most Successful Meeting SEATTLE'S MOST SUCCESSFUL MEETING. The meeting of the King County Fair Association at Seattle closed Monday last It embraced sixty-eight days of racing and was the most successful meeting ever held In the northwest. The purses were larger, the betting ring, for the first time in the history of the course, was open and consequently the attendance was larger and the betting better in every respect. The track was fast for the greatest number of days and some of the races were run in excellent time. Many of the horses that participated in the meeting will be sent to Vancouver, Spokane and Salem, where short meetings will be held, but the majority of them will be shipped to California to await the opening of the meetings at Oakland and Ascot Park. "It was a,.great disappointment to. the race-going public that Beareatcher was" not in condition To run here this season," says the Seattle Post Intelligencer. "T. G. Ferguson's star performer was injured during a training gallop before the opening of the meeting and it was late before be got back into shape. Then his trainer decided to give him a good rest before taking him to Oakland and did not start him. Military Man is another fast one in Mr. Ferguson's stable that did not start here, although he was eating oats at the Meadows all summer." In the course of Its comment on the meeting the same newspaper says: "Seattle has had a taste of the open ring and never again will a syndicate affair be tolerated here. It would be like going back to the styles of fifty years ago to again play against the old syndicate game. For the first time in the history of the track big operators who made big books and who pitted their wits against each other were seen operating here. The big bookmakers have all signified their intention of returning to Seattle next year, as have a large number of the horsemen." Conspiracy Against Colored Jockeys! CONSPIRACY AGAINST COLORED JOCKEYS 1 "For some time a yarn has been In circulation among turfmen to the effect that the white jockeys on the local tracks were combined in an attempt to hamper and harass the colored riders," say the New York Sun of Wednesday. "Before the running of the fifth race yesterday (Tuesday), W. B. Jennings, owner of Shot Gun, took L. Williams, the negro who had been engaged to pilot the horse to one side and told him that he believed the white boys had conspired to keep him from winning. " 'Look out they don't get you into a pocket, said Jennings. 'I believe they will try to shut you off.' " 'Never fear, boss, replied Williams, with a laugh. 'When I get ready to come to the front I'll bust through as sure as you live. They can't stop me boss.' "The race was under way but a short distance when Shot Gun was pocketed. On the far turn Williams tried to come through with him, but Lyne, who rode Prince Hamburg, shut him off by pulling over in front of him. As they turned into the stretch Prince Hamburg had the rail, with Shot Gun to his right a short distance behind him, and Oxford on the outside. Instead of hugging the rail Lyne pulled his horse away from it, making a sort of wedge with Oxford, through which Williams boldly drove Shot Gun at the sixteenth pole. Prince Hamburg incidentally interfered with Robin Hood, whose Iwy, Nicol, had to pull up. It was a clear case of foul riding, and the stewards, who probably knew of the alleged conspiracy to interfere with the colored riders, particularly Williams, lost no time In disqualifying Lyne's mount, which nlaced Robin Hood in third place. Williams wore a grin from ear to ear when he met Jennings in the paddock after the race. " 'They didn't do me, boss,' he said, 'but it looks as if they tried mighty hard. I brushed my way through them and got the money. You bet I can take care of myself if they want to begin rough riding.' "Lyne is a Kentucklan, but whether a hatred of the colored race prompted him to interfere with Williams or not will probably never be disclosed. The stewards will keep their eyes open in future for similar incidents, as the Jockey Club's motto has always been a square deal for all, regardless of color or creed." Why the Distance Was Changed WHY THE DISTANCE WAS CHANGED. The Great Autumn Steeplechase, against the changing of the distance of which H. S. Page, during the Saratoga meeting, lodged a protest, ia to be run Saturday at Sheepshead Bay. A Coney Island Jockey Club oftlcial says It is not likely that' Mr. Page will be Insistent in the matter since it has been explained to him that notice of the change from three miles to two and one-half miles was duly posted on the bulletin board and published In the Racing Calendar prior to the receipt of entries for the race. It was planned originally to have the race at three miles, but when It was found that at this distance three trips over the water and Liverpool would be necessary, the change to two and one-half miles was made. Hamburg Belle is to Race No More HAMBURG BELLE IS TO RACE NO MORE. New York, September 6. Hamburg Belle's racing days are at an end. Relatives,- however, question the public theory that Mr. Hooe committed suicide. The general belief is that: the tragedy was the result of depressing melancholia, caused by ill health. Mr. Hooe was quite wcU known ou the turf both cast and west. A few years back he owned a stable of jumpers which were trained and campaigned by Gwyn Tompkins. Paumonok, away poorly and messed about, eame-. like a cyclone from the rear and finished going two feet to the leaders' one. Kentucky Beau ran well up all the way, but tired right at the end and seemingly has trained off. Toiirenne was closing 'jp with a rush on the outside at the end. Zambesi, away badly, closed a big gap. Oraculum failed to stay, but showed early speed. Killlecrankle was knocked back on the last turn and was going well at tho time. Ironsides, through boring out on the turns, lost much ground, but was always in forward contention find after dropping back on the last turn, came on again and finished faster than the leader. Moonshine forced the early pace, but relinquished the lead at the half and came again gamely. California King ran well up and was coming at the end. True Boy was forced out of position on the backstretch and never dangerous afterward. Red Light, away poorly, steadily improved her position and ran a good race.
