PRICE 5 GENTS Ruling is Unsatisfactory: Action of Stewards in Disqualifying Dinna Ken Causes Public Protest RULING IS UNSATISFACTORY. ACTION OF STEWARDS IN DISQUALIFYING DINNA KEN CAUSES PUBLIC PROTEST. Miller, Rider' of Dashaway, Claims Foul and Autumn Stakes Go to Arcite Fountainblue' s Withdrawal Causes Disappointment. New York, September 11. The withdrawal ot Pe Mund and Fountainblue from the Autumn Stakes carried disappointment to the racegoers who thronged the Sheepshead Bay course this afternoon In the expectation of seeing a race between these two juvenile celebrities which might confirm or reverse their running in the Flatbush Stakes and clear away the mystery that envelops the defeat of Brady's colt. Early rumor credited trainer May with a -natural disinclination to submit De Mund to the severe ordeal Involved in carrying 129 pounds as against 112 pounds or less on the others for a comparatively small stake. Hence no particular surprise was manifest over his absence, but with Fountainblue It was different. Matt Allens exploitation of the Flatbush favorite's speed at Gravesend in Sunday's workout and the accusations against jockey Jack Martin had prepared the public for a treat from Fountainblue in the way pf speed and a triumphant vindication for the trainer. Therefore it was a disappointed lot of racegoers that received the announcement that trainer Allen had "scratched Fountainblue in order to give him time to recuperate after Sunday's trial- against time." Another and greater trial awaited the public,, however, when pinna Ken, the winner and much the best horse in. the Autumn Stakes, was, disqualified for ii foul" nlleeTfTxThaVe'fieeri committed at 'tli start, il. KV Kiiapp, Schuyler Parsons arid F. C. Bishop were in the stewards' stand and for the first time In many years the public refused to accept an official ruling without protest. Press comments in the afternoon papers are particularly bitter. What occurred at the start was not visible to the public or the .stewards, and it was upon the unexpected claim of foul made by jockey Miller and the testimony of the starter that prompted the stewards to take their action. The. claim made was that Dinna Ken had cut across in front at he start and bumped Dashaway. Arcite, running on the extreme outside throughout and finishing in steady fashion, earning a distant second, was awarded the race. Aside from, the two-year-old fixture, the .card was excellent and favorites scored four times out of five. The exception being the 30 to 1 shot, Dainty Dame, in the first race for two-year-olds, over the unaccustomed full Futurity course of seven furlongs. Miller got away badly with the favorite Monfort and could tlo no better than second. Belle of Jessamine, the best three-year-old maiden in training, followed with an easy, victory at a. mile. Madden's Lady Tarantella was the leisurely runner-up. Both are fillies of good class, evidently. Go Between engaged in an exercise gallop to dispose of moderate opposition in the mile and a quarter handicap. The famous horse showed a sudden return to his brilliant spring form. Belligerent, which has been knocking at the door in his last several efforts through the field, finally won a poor race under a poorer ride in the steeplechase at about two miles. The heavily backed Desert Chief put up the most erratic and inconsequential cross-country exhibition seen this season. Ginette wound up the day's racing by a brilliant performance on the grass course. This was her .ninth consecutive victory and, judging by a remark made by one of C. T. Ilenshall's friends after the race, she has brought home over $200,000 in wagers for her immediate connections, which include the Bainey Brothers, Radtke, Koerner and Beckman were suspended for the meeting by the starter. Harry Payne Whitney occupied a box iu the grandstand at Sheepshead Bay and did not leave It once during the afternoon. Condensed History of the September Stakes CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE SEPTEMBER STAKES. Although not especially: valuable, the September Stakes has always been viewed with favor by owners, with the result that such high-class horses as Louisette, The Bard, Kingston, Salvator, Reckon, Bassetlaw, Klllashandra, Blues Caughuawaga, The Picket and Beldame show. Discouraging an Annoying Practice DISCOURAGING AN ANNOYING PRACTICE. New York, September 11. The Jockey Club took heed of the press criticism aroused by the adding of horses at the last moment in yesterday's Sapphire Stakes and, to discourage the practice, a notice was posted today requesting trainers to advise the clerk of the scales of their intentions to add horses in stakes by two o'clock p. ni, hereafter. Coruscate's Rare Stunt: Caught in the Barrier and All but Left, She Wins the Handicap CORUSCATE'S BARE STMT. CAUGHT IN THE BARRIER AND ALL BUT LEFT, SHE WINS THE HANDICAP. I Crowd Cheers tho Performance Makes It Bad for Obert Oasis Is Backed Heavily Daring Is Under Suspicion. Louisville, Ky., September 11. In the handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, which was the feature of an ordinary card at Douglas Park today, Coruscate ran one of the most phenomenal races seen this sea-1 son. Starter Dade aligned the field too close to the barrier and at its rise Coruscate was entagled in the webbing. By the time she was freed she wag :many lengths out of it. Old Stone was jiway In his stride and went into a long lead. Approaching the half mile ground Coruscate struck her gait and. on the stretch turn jockey Wlshard took advantage of the natural spread and steered her for the inner rail, saving a good deal of ground. In the final' furlong she joined Old Stone and El Otros, which were then disputing for the lead, and drawing level with the pair when a sixteenth out., took punishment the gamest and landed the purse by nearly a length from El Otros, which beat out Old Stone a neck for second place. Coruseate's exhibition -elicited considerable applause from the spectators and probably- settles the fate of Obert for his bad ride on her' ia her last start at Latonia. Backers of favorites began the day auspiciously. Oasis, strongly supported, landed the purse in the opening race decisively from Bitter Hand. MissLida,. ;at a long: price .again-showed, ,her heeis , to a 'air company of youngsters at three-quarters. Barney Schreiber's Sainrlda was most fancied, but a bail ride on the part of Keyes eliminated :her as a strong-factor. Another poor exhibition by Keyes was responsible for the defeat of The Only Way InHher race which followed, the purse going to Minnehaha by a short margin over Golden Mineral. Judge Ham-, llton was dissatisfied with Keyes' riding. Believing him timid, he admonished the boy that; he would have to show better efforts in the future if he de-" sires to continue riding here. The warning evidently had the desired effect, for Keyes, on Proteus, clearly outrode D. Boland, who had the mount on Alsono. E. J. Gildersleeve, who started Falkland Iu this race, became the owner of Alsono through, the claiming route, at a cost of $900. The closing race brought about the chief Incident of the afternoon. - Th start was the worst of Dade's efforts here. Amberlta, having much the best Of the send-off, essayed to make a runaway race of it, but tired near the end. Callus, in his anxiety to urge Amberita, almost fell off with the result that The' Englishman nipped her out in the- last stride. The. judges were dissatisfied with the showing of Daring and are inquiring into his running. E. J. Glider-sleeve claimed Daring for $900. Steve L'Hommedieu is here from Mount Clemens,, Mich. He expects to book. For misbehavior while at the post, jockey J. Russell was suspended by the starter for .one. week. H. A. Buck Talks About English Horses H. A. BUCK TALKS ABOUT ENGLISH HORSES. H. A. Buck, publisher of the Racing . Calendar; for the Jockey Club, has returned from a trip to England. He saw considerable racing in that country. He says Sleive Galllon is regarded as the best of the two-year-olds In that country and that it appears to be the general belief that he will make a great three-year-old. Mr. Buck says' the English experts now agree that Spearmint is. a great horse, having been convinced .by his victory in the Grand Prix at Paris that his triumph in the Derby at Epsom was no fluke. He is a big, rugged fellow, with plenty of speed and unconquerable courage. He is compared favorably by excellent judges of three-year-old form with the best of recent Derby winners. The English were reluctant to admit the greatness of Spearmftit, Mr. Buck avers, because . of a national' prejudice against horses of Australian pedigree. Spearmint had to fight his way into their esteem. The death of James R. Keene's great Sysonby is regretted almost as much in England as it is in this country. Mr. Buck heard numerous expressions of sympathy for Mr. Keene. Sysonby is believed on the other; side to have been the most accomplished racer of his time . without reference to national boundaries. The English believe that: if he had lived he would have raced in Great Britain. Sysonby's development of championship form in America was rather surprising to the: English, because Melton, his sire, although a. stallion of faultless breeding and a superb racehorse withal, was never popular with them. Sysonby's brilliant achievements in 1905, however, sent Melton's stock sky high and created a. great demand for his progeny. How Fountainblue Got His Name HOW FOUNTAINBLUE GOT HIS NAME. "Fountainblue got his name from a never-ceasing spring on my farm near Harrodsburg in Mercer county, Kentucky," explained Fred A. Forsythe, who bred and sold the Oddfellow colt to James B. Brady, shortly after the Jockey Club declined to permit the new owner to change the two-year-old's name. "The name was given to the spring by the Indians long before Daniel Boone entered the 'dark and' bloody ground.' The water of the spring is blue and It issues forth steadily and fountain-like." Case of "Ringing" at Latonia is Alleged: Story Afloat at Cincinnati That Another Horse Was Substituted for John Dillon August 27 CASE OF "RINGING" AT LATONIA IS ALLEGED. Story Afloat at Cincinnati That Another Horse Was Substituted, for John Dillon August 27. Cincinnati, 0.,t September 11. There is a story going the rounds here to the effect that the real John Dillon did not win the jumping race at Latonia on August 27. It Is related, though not with the degree of positlveness which should attend such a charge, that an older and thoroughly tried horse was substituted for the three-year-old son of Maceo and Merry Nell on that day. John Dillon was bred by J. B. Respess.- He was not raced as a two-year-old;. He became the property of Mrs. William Webb' -and-was-turned overt.o A. Noble to .be trairieil for steeplechases. He made his first start over the timbers at Latonia June 30, last. There was, nothing impressive about his race. He was not 'in serious contention at any stage. He fenced cleanly, however, and rated along about sixth. His name appeared on the card shortly afterward but, he was scratched and he was not entered again until the race of August 27. The horse that ran that day was off in front and, maintaining the position all the way, won easily. He was opened at 0 tp 1, went to 12 and was backed to 10 to 1. It is now alleged that a great deal of money was taken out of poolrooms and handbooks throughout the country. Three days later he was out again and ran about the same as he did on, his initial appearance. Secretary John Dillon of the Latonia Jockey Club, for whom the colt was 'named, says he is positive that it was the real John Dillon that ran and won. He says-J. B. Respess was in the paddock that day and identified the horse. Great Stakes to Close next Saturday GREAT STAKES TO CLOSE NEXT SATURDAY. A number of rich stakes of the future offered', by the Westchester Racing Association, close for entries at midnight of Saturday next. To western' owners these stakes should prove of .prime importance. As' turf affairs in the west now are, opportunities to :engage promising youngsters advaiffageous'ly ar'e'bf the scantest, with no near prospect of a reversion to the former more prosperous conditions In that regard. No doubt Memphis, Nashville, Louisville and Latonia will be in the field with' their usiial provision of stakes for their spring meetings, and Douglas Park will provide something additional, but for midsummer and autumn racing nothing better is to be looked for than the monotonous grind of small purses at Latonia and the Louisville tracks. This will do for the platers, but not for the owners of good horses, particularly the possessors of good two-year-olds. It Is this state of affairs which should appeal effectively to western owners in , the way of inducing more than ordinarily liberal entries' to the valuable eastern stakes. 1 The stakes now offered are all of longf established fame and, with the exceptionof the ,Beimoht of 1909, which is for foals of 1Q06, are for now yearlings, being the Juvenile, Fashion, and t Eclipse Stakes for two-year-olds of 1907; ; the Withers, La- dies and Belmont Stakes of 190$ and the Belmont of 1909. The added money to the :Vithers..has been Increased from $5,000 to $10,000. To the Ladles it has been raised from $3,000 to $f,000. The forty-second Belmont, that is the Belmont of 190S, is ot the guaranteed value ot $25,000, ; haying already closed for foal entries, but the Belmont of ,190!) has been increased to the guaranteed value of $30,000. Such increases in value are to be taken Into respectful account. No wise owner will hesitate about engaging his well bred youngsters In such rich events. The selling value of a yearling or two-year-old is vastly enlianeed by Its nominations iu big future events. The stakes now offered are: FOR TWO-YEAR-OLDS OF'IOOT1. Juvenile Stakes, $2,500 added.; 5-S mile. Fashion Stakes, fillies, $2,'O0d added; 4 1-2 furlongs Eclipse Stakes, $5,000 added; 5 1-2 furlongs. FOR THREE-YEAR-OLDS QFipOS. Belmont Stakes, value $30,000; 1 3-8 miles. At the same time the National Stallion Race will close for the nomination of stallions. Atoka Runs Three Furlongs in 33 1-2 ATOKA RUNS THREE FURLONGS IN 33 1-2. In a match race against Sam F. for $500 a side at Butte, Montana, last Friday Atoka set the American record for three-eighths of a mile at 334 seconds. On" the opening day of the Butte meeting, August 21, Sam F.- won at a quarter of a mile in 21j. Atoka finished fourth that day. August 23 Atoka won at three-eighths of a mile In 33$ carrying 115 pounds. That clipped a quarter of a second off the American record. Sam F. finished third In that race. August 25 Sam F. ran a quarter of a mile in 22 with 130 pounds up. Atoka was not in that race. August 27 Atoka won at five-eighths of a mile .in 1:00. Thursday last Atoka beat Sam F. two lengths in a race at three-eighths of a. mile in 34. Atoka carried 125 pounds and Sam F. had up 135. The argument between the owners of the two horses over the result of this race concluded in the match race on Friday, which was at catch weights, Atoka carrying 105 pounds and Sam F. 97. They ran together until within forty yards of the wire, when Atoka left Sa-m. F. as if he had been tied. Tom Welsh's Notions About Youngsters TOM WELSH'S NOTIONS ABOUT YOUNGSTERS. "The Flatbush has certainly upset all calculations as to two-year-old form," said Tom Welsh to Sam Doggett at Sheepshead Bay after De Mund's? victory "and it has developed one thing that's in your favor, Sam." "What's that?" asked Mr. Doggett. "Why, It shows there's still a chance for Gallant Dan to turn out to be the best racehorse of the year," was the answer. This cheering Information, presented on a silver salver, so to speak, by Mr. Welsh to Mr. Doggett, is pretty much in line with the system of "doping" formulated by Mr. Welsh after the Futurity, when he announced that J; C. Core, by his calculations, was- a better horse than Electioneer, the winner of the big race. "Easiest thing you know," said Mr. Welsh. "J. C. Core beat Klllaloe easily at Saratoga, didn't he? Killaloe beat Pope Joan without any trouble in the Great Filly, and on this line J. C. Core is lots better than Pope Joan. It took Electioneer's life almost to beat Pope Joan in the Futurity, so I figure that J. C. Core is better than Electioneer. That's the answer." "Two women who patronize the racetracks occasionally went to the track police Saturday and complained that two men who had Introduced themselves as horsemen, had robbed them of big winnings onAV. II. Daniel aud Miss Crawford," says the New York World. "According to their version of the story, the men accosteii them while seated in the grandstand and told them to bet on both horses, as they were Interested in them as owners. The women proved to be gullible, and confided1 their money to the polite strangers. "When one of the horses won the men returned, but postponed paying the money to the women, saying that they had another sure winner, and .advised them to place all the money on this horse 'that couldn't Ipse unless he fell.' Nothing loath to win a small fortune the women did as directed, or thought the men did, ,and when Miss Crawford won at 20 to 1, they mentally calculated they were worth ?2,000. , "Subsequent events proved that they were worth that sura in their mind only, for the men failed to put in an appearance, although the women waited patiently two hours for theni. An investigation by the police. of the charges revealed the fact that tin; men had not bet on either of the winners. They stated that they had picked the horses because they thought they would not win, but advised the women to bet on them so that they could keep the money aftpr the horses had lost. The women had their money returned to them and the men were put off the grounds. De Mund a Cool Weather Horse DE MUND A COOL WEATHER HORSE. The result of the Flatbush Stakes on Saturday x proved conclusively two important things that De Mjnd is a cool weather horse and that Electioneer must be favored by races that he likes or he will not show his best form," says the New York World. "As both youngsters have got to be favored ' liy special conditions it bars them ,from being classified as great. '' "De Mund, a nervous, hlghstrung horse, wastes away in hot weather and Is in his poorest condition at the very height of the racing season, whei the majority of the rjch slakes are decided. This makes him lose nnich of his value as a racehorse. "Electioneer seems unable to show to advantage except on straight courses.
