Page [1] THE PRICE OF THIS PAPER IS FIVE CENTS EVERYWHERE. - PAY NO MORE, VOL. m NO. 224. CHICAGO, "WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 1906. PRICE 5 CENTS Shot Gun Wins Bayshore: Dickey Legged Son of Artillery Romps Home Under His Light Impost SHOT GM WINS BAYSHORE. DICKEY LEGGED SON OF ARTILLERY ROMPS HOME UNDER HIS LIGHT IMPOST. Defeat of Rye Costly to His Backers Likowiso in the Case of Druid Four Good Things Are Successful. New York", ' September 18. The pleasant weather and splendid card of seven races, Including the Bayshore Stakes, attracted a large throng of racegoers to the ever popular Gravesend course today. Shot Gun, the magnificent cripple, accustomed to big burdens in the past, found his impost of 110 pounds so congenial that he proceeded to tow-rope such fast ones as Deutschland and the famous little money getter Rye, taking the stake race with all ease. Backers got handsome returns for their money. The gigantic son of Artillery shows his best form in soft going. This is due to his rickety underpinning. He also bleeds in his work. This deterred horsemen from bidding on -him, although entered to be sold for $1,400. Six coups were attempted during the afternoon, all on a large scale. Four of them were successful through the medium of Lotus in the first; Don Royal in the big 'handicap, third on the -card; Prudential Girl in the sixth, and Tom McGra'th in the last. Fortunes were lost on Rye and Druid, the good things that went wrong. Lotus this time last year was valued at $12,000 or $15,000 and sold at auction for a. price approximating the former figure. She won a selling race today with ridiculous ease in fast time and although entered to be sold for $1,200 failed to elicit a bid when offered at auction after her victory. " - 4 Just, a starter in the last race, ran away four miles after the finish and when caught was turned over to the official veterinary for examination. Annetu Lady was bid up after her victory in the mile and a sixteenth selling from $1,400 to $2,500 by A. V. Claxon, trainer of the Brownleigh Park Stable. Her owner bought her in, "Cad" Doggett, the clubhouse commissioner, who has been making a book on the coming automobile preliminary cup race, lias been ordered to desist. Jockey E. Walsh was suspended yesterday for the remainder of the meeting ten days for breaking through the barrier. This is one of the heaviest penalties for this offense meted out this season. Don Domo and Phalanx in Close Finish: Grey Horse is Heavily Backed and Wins-Good Sport at the State Fair DON D0M0 AND PHALANX IN CLOSE FINISH. Grey Horse Is Heavily Backed and Wins Good Sport at the State Fair. Louisville, Ky., September .18. Racing at the State Fair today was conducted under more normal conditions than prevailed yesterday. The handicap at six furlongs brought out some fair sprinters, among them Don Domo and Phalanx. This pair put up a keen last sixteenth struggle for first money, which was hugely enjoyed by the crowd. During the interval between races show horses were exhibited on the track in front of the grandstand and the awards of ribbons were attended with great demonstration. The paddock was again exclusively for the use of horsemen. A departure from yesterday was that the betting was done under a big tent, enabling owners to saddle their horses in the paddock stalls. L. W. Benson, the well known owner, is sick and in a local hospital. His chances for recovery are considered extremely slim. The yearling half sister to Aristocracy, a bay filly by Planudes Fatty, recently purchased by S. M. Henderson, died this morning. Secretary Lyman Davis announced today that the program book for the first twelve days of the coming Churchill Downs meeting would shortly be issued. Purses will range "from $400 to $750. No handicaps of less than $000 value will be offered. For the two weeks that the program covers there will be over $32,000 distributed to horsemen. Horses from Seattle at Ascot Park HORSES FROM . SEATTLE AT ASCOT PARK. Los Angeles, CaL, September 18. Horsemen are beginning to ship their stables to Ascot Park and within the last week nearly J100 horses have arrived and been assigned quarters at the track. These horses came from. Seattle, where they were raced during the summer at The Meadows track, and several carloads more are due to arrive. More than 100 horses were left at Ascot at the close of last season by owners who shipped only a portion of their strings eastward and the new arrivals make a total of nearly 200 horses now stabled at the track. Xo training is being done by the horsemen yet, although the horses are given morning cauters over the inside track. The horses will be givea a long rest before the activities of winter calls them to the post. Joyner changes his mind the public may be gratified on Saturday with a sight of the best two-year-old of the year, according to the official haudicapper. This is Water Pearl, which Is engaged in the Junior Champion, about six furlongs. The race will have a value of about $14,000 to the winner, and hence is a stake worthy of the best effort of any colt in the laud. Water Pearl's weight will be 127 pounds. That of Salvidere, his most doughty opponent, many agree, will be 124 pounds, he receiving a sex allowance. Peter Pan will carry 127 pounds; Ballot, 127; Yankee Gun, 117; De Mund, 127, and DInna Ken, 107. This should really be the two-year-old race of the year. Jesse Mathews Succumbs to Consumption JESSE MATHEWS SUCCUMBS TO CONSUMPTION. Jesse Mathews, the jockey, known to practically every race-goer in Chicago and the west died of consumption 'at his home near Hagerstown, Ind. Mathews was 33 years of age. He was one of the most famous jockeys in the country some years ago. He had important mounts at all of the principal tracks. Three years ago a severe cold, followed by con-jested lungs, forced Mathews to retire temporarily from the track, but he soon appeared to regain his former strength and Inter re-entered upon the active practice of his profession. But his physical system had been impaired beyond recuperation, and consumption finally took the place of less important ailments. He leaves a widow, father, mother and five sisters. Horse Breeding State Auditor's Hobby: Mr. Mccullough Has some Highly Bred Mares at His Illinois Farm-Buys Hurst Park HORSE BREEDING STATE AUDITOR'S HOBBY. Mr. McCullough Has Some Highly Bred Mares at His Illinois FarmBuys Hurst Park. Louisville, Ky., September 18. James Griffin & Co.'s Frontenac, which made his first start in nearly a year on Friday last, ran a creditable, race under the circumstances. On the way to New Orleans last fall the horse contracted a high fever and had to be put off the train at Jackson, Tenn. It was with great difficulty that his life was saved. He was laid up all winter. He rounded to in the spring, but when Mr. Griffin was shipping from Kenllworth to Salem he was taken sick again. It was necessary that he be thrown out of training all through the summer. He is only Just now getting Into shape after this second setback. Frontenac was bred by James R. Keene and is by Kingston, out of Sylva Belle, by Bend Or, out of the dam of St. Gatlen, and Is of royal lineage, and Mr. Griffin bought the colt mainly for breeding purposes. Mr. Griffin's racing partner, Mr. J. S. McCullough, a prominent business man of Urbana and Champaign, 111., and now serving his third term as State Auditor, owns eighteen hundred acres of land in that section of Illinois. He is an enthusiastic student of breeding, and a couple of years ago had a band of some sixty broodmares'. These have been weeded out, twenty-five of the best being retained, and Frontenac was bred to twelve of these, last spring. The premier stallion at the farm just now is the English-bred horse Uncommon, by Common, the sire of a number of good winners, Including the useful performer, Husted. While he was east the past summer, Mr. Griffin bought for stud use from Mr. Keene, by advice of trainer James Rowe, the six-year-old horse Hurst Park, by Kingston, out of Editha (dam of Pope Joan), by Master Kildare. Hurst Park early gave indications of high-class form, but went wrong. Mr. Griffin says there are nine yearlings -ttt'the farm, six of them by 'fJucoinmon: HeVIll take these up this fall and ship them to New Orleans with his stable. Uncommon was imported In utero by Mr. Keeno and was a very likely two-year-old, but he went wrong early aud was sold to Mr. McCullough, who fancied his bloodlines. Mr. McCullough has great confidence in the Bruce Lowe system of Indieating the winning and non-winning families by numbers. But apart from that he is well versed in the history and development of the thoroughbred, the study of which has been a hobby with him for years. He is going about the matter in the correct way in buying castoffs from establishments like that of Mr. Keene, for the Castleton collection of broodmares is one of the best in the world. Mr. McCullough has an ambition to breed a great horse, and if he pursues the policy he has been following stranger things have happened than that he might have a Futurity winner to his credit one of these days. He is traveling in the footsteps of the late Major B. G. Thomas, the nestor of American breeders. That is to say, while his means may not permit him to buy racing qualfty and Individuality as well as blood, lie is going after the blood which is the .first and prime essential. "We have but little blue grass up our way," said Mr. Griffin, "but we have good grazing and we raise good hay. I think we will, be turning out some pretty high-class racehorses after awhile, as Mr. McCullough is thorough in his methods aud a scientific breeder. Pity we have no racing in Chicago, as with turf sports assured there Illinois would speedily become one of the greatest thoroughbred states in the Union, and these interests would add millions of dollars to the wealth of the state." Bits of Gossip About Foreign Racing: Horses Are Drugged in Russia-Second Sight a Good Filly-Death of Joe Day BITS OF GOSSIP ABOUT FOREIGN RACING. Horses Are Drugged in Russia Second Sight a Good Filly Death of Joe Day. It Is an extraordinary story which comes from St. Petersburg by way of Vienna with regard to the race for the Kaiser Preis recently won by Galtee Boy, a son of the English Derby winner, Galtee fMore., ,-Au examination and analysis of 'the Saliva of all the competitors was .taken after the, race, and with the exception of three of the unplaced competitors, all were found to have been "doped."' The three not doped were Count Ribeanpierre's Rendezvous," Messrs. Sherebkow's Mascagnl and P. J. Lazarew's Padischach Sade. The results of the analysis were publicly posted on the stands a week after the race. Meanwhile stakes had been paid over and so had all bets. The question now avisos, will the race be . declared void and the money be refunded; will it be awarded to the three horses which had not been tampered with; or will the result be allowed to stand? "If I mistake not, Mr. Vahderbilt has a remarkably good filly in Second Sight', " the winner of the Prix de la Touques at Deaiivlllei and what' will increase the owner's satisfaction is the fact that he bred her himself," says a noted French turf critic. "Second Sight is by Fiorizel II., otit of First Sight, a mare by Isinglass, out of Nandine, by Wisdom, so that her pedigree is good enough for anything. She made her debut in the two-year-old Omnium at Maisons Laffite, being unplaced, and she ran second to Peroraison for the Prix de Honfleur at Deauville. These two races evidently did her a lot of good, for she won her last race in decisive fashion, beating Musette, the winner of the Prix d'Essai at Maisons, Interlaken, He de France III., and a good field. Second Sight is heavily engaged, and I shall be greatly surprised if she does not distinguish herself." Joe Day, one of the famous family of trainers, died in England September 1, after a long and painful Illness. Day was born in I860. He left a widow and seven children totally unprovided for. His brother trainers have been very good, and have seen to their wants, but it is suggested that something else will now have to be done for their support. The Gaming and Betting Bill, which recently passed the Legislative Assembly of Nsw South Wales, prohibits street, shop and club betting, and, while not rendering betting on racecourses and sports grounds illegal, empowers proprietors to remove persons betting thcron. The bill also restricts the number of race meetings, and provides for a minimum circumference of six furlongs and the licensing of all race courses. Newspapers are prohibited from publishing betting quotations before the events. Danny Maher lias. met with extraordinary success in big events during this season in England, included amongst them, the Great Ebor Handicap (Golden Measure), the Woodcote Stakes (Traquair), the Derby (Spearmint), the Oaks (Keystone II.), the Castle Irwell Handicap (Velocity), Manchester and Ascot Gold Cups (Bachelor's Button), Eclipse Stakes (Llangibby), National Produce Stakes (Traquair), and Liverpool Summer Cup (Chaucer). In the English jockey list from the beginning of the season to September 1, W. Higgs still holds an unassailable position, his nearest opponent E. Wheatley, being thirty behind, Higgs having ridden ninety-eight winners to Wheatley's sixty-eight. Danny Maher is third with sixty-six and O. Madden 13 fourth with sixty-two. Pontotoc is at Louisville PONTOTOC IS AT LOUISVILLE. Louisville, Ky., September 18. Pontotoc, which was named among the entries for the Hitchcock Steeplechase Handicap at Gravesend tomorrow, is In J. O. Keene's stable at Douglas Park. He was brought here from the east seven or eight days ago. He has not been doing well lately. New Book on the Feature: Bets Are Declared off and Diamond and Meddling Daisy Are Coupled NEW300K ON THE IEATTJRE. BETS ARE DECLARED OFF AND DIAMOND AND MEDDLING DAISY ARE COUPLED. Koerner Rides Three Winners Blue Buck's Narrow Victory Mr. Marshall Not an Expert Troubcl Is Ineligible. Toronto, Ont., September IS. The feature of today's racing at Woodbine was the riding of jockey Koerner. Out of four mounts the boy finished first three times. He rode Blue Buck in the mile and a furlong race and It was due to his horsemanship that his mount got the decision- Reservation, the favorite in this race, ran wide when nearlng home. The finish was close between Blue Buck, Cam-Bridge and Reservation, only the judges being in a position to decide. When the numbers were hoisted giving the race to Blue Buck a howl went up from Reservation's backers. Koerner also won with Diamond, the even money favorite In the Epsom Handicap, the feature. Betting on this race, had proceeded about fifteen minutes when It was discovered that Diamond and Meddling Daisy were trained by the same man. Thereupon all bets were declared off and twenty minutes allowed for a new book and Diamond and Meddling Daisy were ordered coupled in the betting. Koerner, on Sir Ralph, outr rode Dealy on Wexford, the favorite in the fifth race, scoring his third victory of the day. With riders reversed the favorite would have won. Mr. Marshall put up a bad looking ride on Ballycastle, the heavily-backed favorite in the hunters" race for gentlemen riders. When Mr. Marshall returned to the stand he was subjected to considerable ridicule and abuse by some of those who had bet on his mount. The stewards recommended that -Mr. Marshall accept no more mounts here, deeming him incompetent. One favorite, four second choices and one outsider got the money today. Thirty -one books were hi line and did a rattling good business. Jockey Treubel will not ride here. Word was received this morning from Louisville ' to the effect that Treubel's suspension is in force until September 20, on which date the meeting at Douglas Park will close. Gardiner Tyler fell in the first race and his rider, McLaughlin, sustained a badly split ear. The boy refused to let the track physician take some stitches in the wounded member, so he was sent to a city hospital. P. 'T. Chinn this morning sold to J. Drummond, Vinegar Bill and Ballston Boy. New York Sun Estimates the St. Louis Man's Losses to Have Been $100,000 to Date. "There can be, no. doubt that, the western element here has revolutionized methods. The westerners have always borne the reputation of knowing how to get the money and they have evidently lived up to it," says the New York Sun. "While it is not fair to say that some of these operators have resorted to crooked methods, still it is not stretching the point to state that they have come pretty close to what is called sharp practice. These individuals, it is said, think nothing of running a horse 'dead' one day and 'alive' another. This is done chiefly through the kind of shoes put on the horse's feet. When there's nothing doing heavy bar plates are used, and when the checks are down light aluminum racing plates are. substituted. This sort of rigging makes a wonderful change in the speed of a horse so that a form reversal is the result. But It is a matter of doubt whether one of these owners has been even reprimanded for the adoption of such, methods. Aside from all this taik about the western bunch, the fact remains that at least one of the crowd from that part of the country has had his fingers burned. That man is Louis Cella, who Invaded the east last spring with a big bank roll and soon had a. dozen members of the 'Mets' working for him in the ring. At first it was believed that Cella's presence would cause trouble, inasmuch as he had been charged with breaking up racing In the state of Missouri. But Cella has not been a success as a bookmaker or a horse owner here. In fact he has lost nearly $100,000 in good money, which is not to be sneezed at even by the St. Louis millionaire. Cella has only a couple of the 'Mets'" working for him now, which goes to show that the eastern turf was not such a cinch for him after all." Bennett Talks of Eastern Racing BENNETT TALKS OF EASTERN RACING. Cincinnati, O., September IS. George C. Bennett, the Memphis turfman and bookmaker, was in the city yesterday en route to his home in Tennessee. Mr. Bennett was in the east all summer, and in speaking of the racing on the New York tracks said: "It's been a pretty strenuous session for the bookmakers, aud the winners are few and far between. My stable has had some luck. I have a good colt in Ethon, and I think that he ran his last two races a bit short. The trainers baby the good ones occasionally. The toughest game was at Saratoga. There was a lot of money In sight, but only three horses were backed to a race, and in the great majority of instances one of the three .would cash. The ouly book I am interested In now is that being made by Jimmy Duckworth. "The two-year-olds out east this year are a mighty good lot. It is pretty hard to say which is the best, as there is little difference between a number of them. Salvidere or De Mund might be the right guesses and the latter may prove that he is the better. He certainly has a powerful flight of speed. "I am going to Memphis now to look at my crops and my twenty-one yearlings, and then I shall go back to try and get even." 1 Good Racing is Expected at Helena GOOD RACING IS EXPECTED AT HELENA. Helena, Mont., September 18. The three stakes for running horses to be decided at the Montana, State Fair, October 1 to 6, have filled beyond all expectation. The Helena Handicap, $1,000, one and a quarter miles, the Mountain Stakes, $1,000. one mile, and the Henry A. Meyer Hotel Stakes for $500 have an average number each of eight entries, and among them are some of the best horses In the northwest. Di fact, these races drew from California, Oregon and Colorado. The program, as now arranged, calls for two harness races and three running races each day. In addition to the 1b the cowboy relay race for $1,000, which Is attracting more attention and bringing more entries than was thought possible at the announcement of the race. The little mare was given a chance to recuperate, and in 1900, at the Oakland meeting in California, Ginette began to display her real ability. In her first start there she was third, then she won and the next time was third. Then followed two races in which she was unplaced. She finished first on April 11, but was set back for a foul and the race given to Royal Rogue. Under the California rules Ginette :Ws not placed last, but second.'
