Garner Rides Three Winners C. Ross Gives Graves-end Race-goers a Surprise Roseben, with Shaw Up, Works Three-quarters in 1:12 3-4. New York, September 25. Fifteen thousand spectators saw. Coy Maid win the Occidental Ilandicap at one mile and an eighth at Gravesend this afternoon. Among the good ones finishing behind the winner- were Dandelion and Go Between and the two western turf stars Nealon and Cottontown. Not one of this distinguished quartette was placed, the runner-up and third horse being respectively Dolly Spanker and the suddenly improved Good Luck. John A. Drake's apprentice rider, Garner, displayed brilliant form In the saddle, being successful on Frank Lord and Lady Prudence in addition to Coy Maid. Miller took the first with big "Tim" Sullivan's Are High at odds of 15 to 1 and when Frank Lord won the third the Sullivan "clan" celebrated a double-barrelled victory. One of the interesting incidents that cropped up during 1 lie afternoon was the unexpected reappearance In the- saddle of C. Ross and his subsequent win on Ed Ball in the second race at a mile and a sixteenth. Ross, who was supposed to have sustained fatal injuries in the mix-up that caused the death of Frelshon last week and who did not recover consciousness until last Sunday, or forty,-eight hours after the accident took place, gave the ,publicanef..tb..biggest, .surprises of thetsensouby-his exhibition of vigor, alertness and nervel Interest in the match race between Lad' Amelia and Roseben was increased this noon by a smart trial which the big gelding had over this course. His owner, Davy Johnson, was on hand to witness the workout. Roseben had a big package of weight up and with Shaw in the saddle was sent six furlongs in 1:12J. Shot Gun barely scratched home from a big field in the selling sprint, Penrhyn's forward running astounding the race-goers. Thomas H. Williams and Adam Andrew, respectively president and vice-president of the. New California Jockey Club, were visitors at Gravesend this afternoon. Careers of Roseben and Lady Amelia CAREERS OF ROSEBEN AND LADY AMELIA. If the weather is favorable and track fast Roseben 'and Lady Amelia will try conclusions tomorrow afternoon in an exciting scurry over the "about" six furlongs course at Gravesend. Both rank with the greatest sprinters of turf history and. are In great form at present. It is really a match race between the two, but to conform to the rulesrthe, race has been made a sweepstakes and any owner Is at liberty to make, entries. It is doubtful, however, if any will take advantage of the privilege. If Halifax was ready he would, no doubt, be put in to . make it a three-cornered affair, but. he Is not. The race. will attract much attention and both horses will be heartily backed. As the holder of the American record for three-quarters of a mile, Roseben will. probably be given preference, but it is no sure thing that he will-win. The mare is very speedy and has always shewn at her- best over the "about" six furlongs course. Thoroughbreds to Go to Mexico THOROUGHBREDS TO GO -TO MEXICO. New York, September 25. While it was- chiefly with a view of improving . his range stock- that Senor Don Juan Horcasitas, Of Chihuahua,-Mexico, recently bought through Leslie Kraft - the horses Puissant and Baytwlg and five thoroughbred yearlings, these horses will -do: -a bit of racing, Mr. Kraft says, before they are put "into the stud. The 'Mexicans have no organized- raelngv The population and wealth of the Southern Republic is distributed over too great an area for the successful conduct of the sport on American; lines. M. Mason, one of tKe' tnost jfcpalg&of eastern trainers, rode races in the late 8b's and early 90' s when he was in Chihuahua with Jack Follans-iee. The races are invariably jrun out in the open common at distances varying from 000 to 880 yards. They are purely trials of speed. Endurance ' in horse or rider does not count for anything. But money . can be picked up by a, man who has' a thoroughbred that can step a bit.. Puissant and Bay twig will probably win many a race on the other side of the Rio Grande before they are set to work to Improve Senor Horcasitas' range stock. ' Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF.
