May Como Together Later Running Water Wins the Albemarie Handicap Backers of Favorites Have a Winning Day. New .York, September 27. Lacking suitable track conditions, the special for the sprinting championship- between Roseben and Lady Amelia -was declared off early this afternoon. Up to 0 o'clock the track was good enough to have suited both owners but-as the rain continued to fall A. J. Joy--ner for Mr. Thomas telephoned to President Dwyer of the Brooklyn Jockey Club that Lady Amelia could not run her best in the going that prevailed and there was nothing to do but call the race off. It is barely posslsble that the race will be run' Saturday. This has yet. 1o be decided. If not. then it may be arranged for some day during the Brighton Boa cli meeting. " A big crowd had journeyed to the track in the hope that the rain toad skipped Gravescnd and the great match race would eventually take place. The published conditions called for a good day and track and consequently everybody was prepared for the : elimination of the big feature. The remainder of. the card made ample amends and as practically four favorites won right off the reel with jockey Sillier5' trid'etfii Yater, jbojfie Albemarle Handicap, at a mile and a sixteenth, the day's racing was voted excellent. The inconsistent Woolwich, winner of the mile and a furlong selling affair, was bid'up from $1,000 to $1,000 by J. D. Odom and the horse reverted to him at the last named price. Toots Mook Sulks after Being Kicked: Bryan Wins the Feature Race at Hamilton - Light Rain Benefits the Track TOOTS M00K SULKS AFTER BEING KICKED. Bryan Wins, the Feature Race at Hamilton Light Rain Benefits the Track. namlllon. Ont., September 27. The light rain of last night had a beneficial effect on the track today. It was lightning fast. .The-: beautiful, weather and the prospect of good sport brought out n : big crowd. Two favorites, three second choice and an outsider won. The feature race -was. the. handicap, nt.onc and one-sixteenth, miles.- It was- won. by Bryan, the second choice. Solon Shingle-received a wretched ride from Hogg. Royal ' "Window, the' heaviest backed horse in the race, finished outside the money.. In his eagerness to get away from the post, jockey Davis broke the barrier and -would not obey starter Murray's instructions. Davis was suspended for two days. Little Red, at 15 to 1, had no trouble in disposing of his opponents in the closing race. Toots Mook, the odds-pa favorite in the opening race, was all but left at the post and was pulled up. The stewards conducted an investigation and decided that no one was to blame. The filly was kicked at the start and would not break with the others.. Steeplechasers Will Go Back to England: John M. P. and Desert Chief Are to be Sent over for Winter Racing STEEPLECHASERS WILL GO BACK TO ENGLAND John M. P. and Desert Chief Are to Be Sent' Over for Winter Racing. New York, September 27. John M. P. and Desert Chief flitbe English steeplechasers brought to this country early in the season by Grant Hugh Browne, will be returned to England after the Belmont Park meeting. It is understood that they are beiijg sent back to race during the winter, England's season of cross-country racing. They will be sent to trainer Nugent, who bandied John .M. P. there last -winter, when he proved to be one of the best chasers In the country. This move is such a peculiar one, however, that the suggestion was made by more than one person yesterday that they were only here under lease and had never been purchased outright by Mr. Browne. Sending a horse to England to race in winter after a summer campaign in this country, seems such an unusual proceeding that the Idea was accepted by many, but time alone will settle the question. Overtures have been made to Jimmy Owens to go abroad again and ride the horses this winter, but no agreement has been reached yet; Garth's String of Fresh Horses GARTH'S STRING OF FRESH HORSES. New York, September 27. Billy Garth has arrived at Belmont Park from his Virginia home with fifteen horses and will be much In evidence from now until the close of the season, as the horses in the stable are fresh, after a rest and may be depended upon to show to the best advantage. He is likely to le a factor in the three-year-old chasing situation also, if stories which have preceded him from Washington are one-half true. T. S. Martin, the three-year-old; by Fatherless, who is trained by Garth for C. C. Smithson, lias schooled so well at Bennings that he nt once comes into the limelight among the chasers of this class which will have their first public outing at Brighton next Monday. Garth says himself that he has never seen a more promising green jnmper than T S. Martin, ne will Iks tried out over the Belmont Park course Saturday and owners hereabouts with promising three-year-olds are anxious to sec the son of Fatherless school over the stiff country there. Jockey Mountain Goes to Louisville JOCKEY MOUNTAIN GOES TO LOUISVILLE, Jockey George Mountain, en route from Hamilton, Ont., to Louisville, stopped over in Chicago yesterday afternoon and last night to see his relatives. "I have ridden eighty-five winners this year and I feel like I will be able to retain my good form for a long time. I can ride at 103 pounds week after yeck without reducing and I am so built that it will be a long time before I will ever weigh more than 110 pounds. I have not made half a dozen wagers this year and am saving my money. I have not made definite plans for the winter but it fc altogether likely that I will ride at Ascot Park. I will ride at Louisville until the close of tiie Churchill Downs meeting and : will then go to Latonia." Nine Young Jumpers Under Eastern Ban: N. S. and H. A. Rule Forbids Entry of Three-Year-Old That Has Jumped Before October 1 NINE YOUNG JUMPERS UNDER EASTERN BAN. N. S. and H. A. Rule Forbids Entry of Three-Year-Old that Has Jumped Before October 1. St. Volma, Dr. Keith, Wool Dealer, Baveno, Peter Becker, John Dillon, Optical, Pirate's . Dance and Full of Fun are under the ban -of th'e National Steeplechase and Hunt Association for the remainder of the year. They are all three.-year-olds and. have participated in steeplechase races at the tracks in Kentucky and Canada, St' Yolma and John Dillon each having won over the obstacles. Being under the ban of the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association, however, does not mean that they cannot race again this year. It means that they cannot race In steeplechases at any of the eastern tracks. The rule under which they are debarred In the east reads: "No horse shall run in a hurdle-race or steeplechase until October 1 of the year in which he Is" three years old, and then during the remainder of the year only In races confined to three-year-olds. No. entry of a borse that has started in a steeplechase or hurdle race, in this or any other country, previous, to October 1 of the year in which he Is three years old, can be received for meetings held under these rules, during his three-year-old year.". There is no such rule In the west. This year three-year-olds- were racing over the jumps as early as . July; There have been no races, however, exclusively for three-year-olds. The youngsters have been taking their chances along with the older horses. The first race of the.year.for three-ycarrolds, exclusively under the rules of. the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association will, be at Brighton Beach, Monday next. It will. c.o.me. as the second race on the card. It is to be over the short course, about two miles, and the weight will be 135 pounds with sex allowance. There are at present probably seventy-five- to one hundred three-year-olds .schooling ri'stoep'lechaiiJ most prominent are the following thirty: .'.( ' Dr. Helsworth. 'Vendor. Those indicated with (t)bave never started. Vendor has won the most money. T. S. Martin has won the greatest number of races and has been the most frequent starter. He started twenty-six times as a two-year-old and won seven races. He has been to the post sixteen times this year anil has won two races. Jurist won four races out of twenty-five starts last year. Sunglow took four races out of sixteen starts. Realm was not started as a two-year-old, but he- was a good horse at Buffalo this year. Ho has three victories, two seconds and four thirds to his credit out of seventeen starts. It is from this lot that the field In Monday's race will probably come. All of these horses are eligible for the Harbor Hill Cup Steeplechase, the chief feature of the year' for young jumpers, which is to be decided at the autumn meeting of the Westchester Racing Association, which opens at Belmont Park, October S. The race is over the about two miles course and the weight is 135 pounds, the winner of a steeplechase to carry five pounds extra, or ten pounds if the winner of two or more such races. Clarence H. Mackey. adds $3,000 and a silver cup. The stake ivas closed with thirty-one entries the thirty named above and the geldjng Optional, which is now ineligible through his having raced in Canada. The subscription was- 25 each . and $50 additional is required from starters, so with six going to the post the race will be worth to the winner, in addition to the cup, $3,300 net; the second horse receiving $500 and the third $200. It Is n provision of the race that the owner who twice wins the cup, not necessarily in consecutive years, retains it as his property. The cup is now in the possession of "Mr. Cotton," who won it' with Del-canta-last year. Another Big Stake for Three-Year-Olds ANOTHER BIG STAKE FOR- THREE-YEAR-OLDS. Hardly a year passes . by .in which . the. always Island " Club not progressive Coney Jockey -does enrich its already opulent -stake. -program by the .addition of some event captivating alike, to owners and the public. The latest is the-,proposed institution of a race for three-yeaplds. of the guaranteed value .of $25,000 with .conditions, on approximately the lines of the American Derby': - It is -to be at a mile and a half with a moderate fee -to, accompany the entry and no further liability except a' fee for starting. It will be a penalty and allowance race as was the American Derby, but1 the extremes of weight -vill not be great. Closing for entries but a few months prior to the race,, tit-will secure abundant entries of developed, youngvihorses with few good three-year-olds left out; and - should at once become a fixture of great renown and easily the most popular and interesting eastern race for three-year-olds. Its name will be the Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes. There is -a. "-provision to the effect that should the winner of this race also win the Tidal- Stakes and Lawrence Realization ' Stakes of the- same year, it will also win the: additional sum of $10,000. Owners will not 16se sight of this feature. A colt capable of winning this triple event would certainly enrich its owner to the extent of at least ,$00,000. This valuable stake will close for entries next January at the same time as entries close for the Suburban Handicap, 'and be run in the course of the June meeting. A sequel race for;three-year-olds, at two miles, to be run at the September meeting, would seem to be in order. Shot Gun's Uncertain Condition SHOT GUN'S UNCERTAIN CONDITION. "Guess Cassidy will put- the old fellow on the .schooling list for good and, all," said Walter Jennings after Shot Gun's display at the post 'for the fifth race at Gravcsend Tuesday.' "I don't'mind so much for I. don't expect to race him again here this fall, but I would like for him to go away with no black marks against him. He will go to California with others of my string and may not come back east, again." Mr. Jennings' fears were-groundless, or rather Mr. "Cassldy's ideas of discipline fri the case were directed against the rider, L. Williams, instead of the horse, and Williams was suspended for" the remainder of the Gravescnd meeting. After Shot Gun had been returned to the paddock his owner discovered signs of a bowed tendon,, and is awaiting developments with much anxiety, as the unruly but fast son of Artillery holds a strong place in the affections of his owner. Burns is Doing Well in France BURNS IS DOING WELL IN FRANCE. James McLaughlin, Jr. has received a letter from Tommy Burns, his brother-in-law,- who Is riding In France, to the effect that he (Burns) 'is. doing as well as might be expected under difficult circum-'stances. Burns does not find It dhScult to make weight, and the French game is not hard, but his mployer keeps changing trainers, and the morale of die stable is constantly upset. Burns urges young McLaughlin to join him in France and take up training. Poor Sport at Louisville: Marvel P. is the Only Horse to Sustain the Confidence of Form Followers POOR SPORT AT LOUISVILLE. MARVEL P. IS THE ONLY HORSE TO SUSTAIN THE CONFIDENCE OF FORM-FOLLOWERS. Miltiades Is Barred from Future Races at Douglas Park Jockey Barnett Is Suspended for Disobedience at the-Post. Louisville, Ky., September 27. This was another bad day for favorites at Douglas Park, the only successful one being Marvel P., which won the opening race. Threatening weather decreased the attendance considerably and the sport suffered much by the heavy and sticky track. Miltiades' defeat In the handicap was a severe Mow to form followers, and his failure to finish in the money caused the judges to Issue a ruling barring the horse from starting here again because of Inconsistency. The Obert-Perry case was the main topic of conversation among horsemen. It is expected that both the Western Jockey Club and the American Turf Association will look Into the matter. The disclosure of the letter, sent by Obert to Judge Mac-farlan and transferred by Kim to J. B. Dillon, fcr-awaited with much interest. Starter Dade will leave here Saturday night for New York to be in time for the opening of, the Brighton Beach meeting where he will do- the faffing?- WlUtonuSnyderho.-Ife. assisting- sturtor o Hot Springs Sunday and assume fee duties of starter during the ten day meeting that opens at Oaklawn October 1. Starter Dwyer was among the visitors, coming here from Toronto. Colonel Milton Young, of thei-State Racing Commission, was at the track for the. first time since the Douglas Park meeting began. Jockey Anbuchon, riding Old Stone, lost both stirrups when the horse stumbled while in, a contending position and was forced to ease him up In the stretch. He was fined $50 by the judges for using defective equipments. ' Gracchus, winner of the fifth race, .was bid up $400 over his entered price of a like amount by an unknown, but was retained. Jockey Barnett was suspended for - the remainder of the meeting by the starter for disobedience at the post. Matt J. Winn said today that the work of clearing up Churchill Downs Is progressing rapidly. The program book for the first twelve of the eighteen days of the New Louisville Jockey Club's autumn meeting, which will open at Churchill Downs Monday next, is being distributed by Secretary Davis. It provides for six races daily. The purses range from $400 to $750. There are no stakes. Perry Denies Obert's Charges in Toto: Coruscate's Owner Says Jockey's Statement is Made Up of Malicious Untruths PERRY DENIES OBERT' S CHARGES "QT TOTO. Coruscate's Owner Says Jockey's Statement Is Made. Up of Malicious Untruths. Louisville, Ky., September 27. H. J.. Perry, owner of Coruscate,." declares that jockey Obert's alleged confession Is built out of malicious untruths. Said he today: "I am at ajlpss-to assign aimotive for his deliberate concoetionunless it is on account of a "'balling ont' I gave him in the paddock at Churchill Downs while racing was in progress at Douglas Parkl He came to me with a plea to intercede with Judge Macfarlan for the lifting of the suspension against him. I flatly refused, and was surprised that Obert should have the effrontery to make the request. I am positive that Obert pulled Coruscate at Latonia. Why he did so I do not know. "I bet $50 on the mare and borrowed the money from Pat Dunne. I repaid him after Coruscate's first victory at Douglas Park. Obert's statement that I gave him $500 is ridiculous. He might as well have said that I gave him $5,000,000. You know how things were around Latonia with me. I was not overly prosperous and had borrowed from many of my friends. In fact, I was so badly oft for funds that I was forced to sell several of my horses to defray shipping expenses to Louisville. Had I desired to stop the mare I could have done so with twenty-five cents without Obert's assistance. "Obert rode many horses for me and I did not believe he would throw me down until the Coruscate race. I am willing to make afildavlt that I was not Implicated in any wrongdoing attending, Coruscate's race on the day that Obert was suspended." Dandelion to Race No More This Years DANDELION TO RACE NO MORE THIS YEAS. Mr. Hitchcock has decided to put Dandelion by for the year. This announcement was made after the Occidental Handicap by John E. Madden. Dandelion is not the horse he was a little while back. Racing since early spring has told on him. He has lost much of his speed and he Is no longer formidable In handicaps. None of the wise bettors believed 'he had a chance last Tuesday because of, Ma obvious stateness. Answers to Queries .
