PRICE 5 CENTS - Tipping Wins Sea Breeze: Impedes Rye, the Favorite, but No Claim of Foul is Made TIPPING WINS SEA BREEZE. IMPEDES RYE, THE FAVORITE, BUT NO CLAIM OF FOUL IS MADE. Miller Is Warned by the Stewards as to His, Riding: Garner Rides Three Winners Little Chance for Match Race. New l'otk, September ,2S. One of the slimmest crowds of the season saw the racing at Gravesend today under ideal conditions. In the solitary stake fixture, the Sea Breeze, selling, at a mile, and a sixteenth, the inconsistent three-year-old filly Tipping, owned by J. II. McAvoy, at odds of 40 to 1, upset what was considered a "moral certainty." The celebrated little Bowery liorse Rye, was backed for a fortune at odds-on. Tipping, ridden by Garner, joined issue in the stretch, and swerving over to the inside carried the favorite with her and, by forcing him to repeatedly pull up In the final 'struggle, encompassed his ultimate defeat. Rye was even beaten out for second place by Wes and Miller's failure to lodge a complaint against the winner evoked onsiderable surprise from the spectators. Garner is fast recovering his good spring form and Is beginning to displace Miller In the affections of the variable racegoing public. The racing was marred by bad starting. Several races were decided by the start alone. Halifax was practically left at the past in the first, otherwise he could hardly have lost. Royal Breeze in the Tsecond and Onatas and John Lyle'in the last might have altered the complexion of the finish of their respective races had they, received. favorable send-offs. That RrenVnmre so-called special or match race this season is considered improbable That is unless the owners of the champion are willing to make big weight concessions over a full six furlongs tourse in order to secure a match and decide the sprinting championship for good and all. Lady Amelia was the undisputed queen of the Gravesend course only. It lias . developed that the reason Accountant did not start In the Hindoo Stakes against Ironsides on Wednesday was due to the' fact that Brady's great three-year-old was suffering .from muscular contraction and some mild internal trouble. It was at, Br. Sheppard's suggestion that Accountant was withdrawn. For failure to obey the starter's orders to school True Wing at the barrier, Thomas H. Ryan, the owner, was yesterday fined $50 by the stewards. It is said that jockey Miller has been severely cautioned by the stewards to be more careful in his riding or suffer a possible revocation of his license; for the remainder of the season. Millett as Much as He Refused for Him - a Good Racehorse COTTONTOWN SUSTAINS OWNER'S OPINION. Has Earned P. J. Millett as Much as He Refused for Him A Good Racehorse. When P. J. Millett refused an offer of $10,000 for Cottontown early in the season, some of his friends at Latonia- shook their heads in doubt as to the owner's judgment. They were willing to admit that COttontown was in the first rank of the three-year-olds racing in the west at that time, but they did not share the belief of the owner that he could make good in the company he would meet in the oast, Mr. Millett having declared his intention to campaign the son of Captain Sigsbee and Lauretta Burke in high society through the summer and fall. He sent the colt to "Jack" Baker at Saratoga and has since' had the satisfaction of seeing him earn three victories and two seconds in a fashion which fully sustains his. confidence in the horse. Cottontown was bred by Martin Doyle at Paris Ky. His sire is a son of Candlemas, which until now has had only limited opportunities in the stud. Cottontown's dam is a daughter of the noted mare Sister. Lauretta Burke is a young mare and Cottontown is her first foal. She was foaled in 1899 and was raced only as a two-year-old. She was a winner. Cottontown, as a two-year-old, was not highly regarded beyond his immediate conections. He made his eleven starts and earned Jiis two victories in ordinary company at the Kentucky tracks and there were few flashes of the brilliant speed and hardly a bit of the courage that has characterized his racing this year. In those eleven starts he was only- twice Unplaced, yet his total earnings were only $S00. This year he has scored eight victories, five seconds and two thirds out of seventeen starts and has brought his owner $9,720 in stakes and purses, to say nothing of a goodly sum through speculation if all reports are true. Six of his successes have been in races at one mile and three of these he has won in better than 1:40. His most important victory, however, was in the First Special at Gravesend on the opening day of the present meeting. In that race he covered the mile and a quarter in 2:055, just two-fifths of a second slower fnan the track record, wearing down and beating out Running Water and Go Between, the winner of the Suburban Handicap, was still another head back. It was one of the most exciting finishes of the meeting. Since then he has started but once, running fourth to Coy Maid, Dolly Spanker and Good Luck in the Occidental Handicap. He was carrying 122 pounds, live pounds more than he had up in the First Special and it proved that he had been asked to concede too much to those finishing in front of him. If he improves as much through the coming winter as he did last winter, Cottontown will in truth be a formidable horse in the handicap division for the season of 1907. He Is well worth rememberings "Good Things" Go Wrong: Marshal Ney is the Only Successful Favorite at Douglas Park "GOOD THINGS" GO WRONG. MARSHAL NEY IS THE ONLY SUCCESSFUL FAVORITE AT DOUGLAS PARK. Posing's Rider Claims Foul hut It Is Not Allowed ' J. Murphy Falls Off AthenaBittersweet Drops Dead. Louisville, Ky., September 28. Marshal Ney, - in the closing" race, was the only favorite to win. at Douglas Park this afternoon and his victory did not profit the talent much. He was at a short price and justified opinion by winning as his rider pleased. W. Walker, at one time owner pf the horse, bid bim up to $1,700, an advance of $200 over his en? tered price. He was retained. Good things were numerous, but failed to land, surprises resulting in most of the races. Posing and Light Wool were best in their respective races, but failed to win because of mishaps. Posing was forced wide into the stretch, thereby losing enough ground to cost Rome Respess the purse. A claim of foul by her Jockey against the winner was not allowed. Light Wool ran out on the stretch turn. J. Mnrphy, barely able to sife on a horse, fell off soon after the finish in the last race, Athena bolting through the paddock and into the stable yards where she was finally caught after an exciting chase. The judges have ordered him not to accept any more mounts. After considerable trouble, 7.. G. Stebblns prevailed on the express companies to. have six Burton cars in readiness tomorrow to transport horses to Hot Springs. Those that will depart tomorrow Include E. Trotter, C. T. Gardner, J. C. Cahn and 'F. GeringTsThe same horsemenrVill ship to Dallas, Texas for that meeting. Bittersweet, owned by J. C. Cahn, dropped dead this morning while being exercised. E. C. Hopper was among the visitors. He announced to horsemen that plenty of hotel accommodations would be available on the coast this winter. Fargo was purchased by J. Markleln before the first race from Mose Goldblatt for $600. Redwood II., winner of the opening race, was, bid, up $200 over his entered price of $600 by L,- H. Miller and retained. M. ,J. Winn sent a personal message to a number of the directors of the American Turf Association, notifying them of the meeting to be held next Monday morjiing. It is expected that the Obert-Perry case will be taken up at that time. H. E. Rowell will ship all the. horses he has racing here to California tomorrow. Jockey Buchanan regained his senses this morning and spoke lucidly to his wife and baby. No clear statement as to how he sustained his injuries has been given out as yet. Secretary Nathanson will leave for Chicago tomorrow night. He will remain in Chicago about two weeks before going east in the Interest of the Crescent City Jockey Club. Twelve horses owned by -E. Corrlgan arrived at Churchill Downs from Toronto this morning. Horse Shoe Tobacco is to Have a Chance in the Stud HORSE SHOE TOBACCO IS TO HAVE A CHANCE IN THE STUD. Governor Orman the Only Winning Favorite Gold Enamel's Entry Will Be Refused. Hamilton, Ont, September 28. The bookmakers had no kick coming on the result of today's racing. Governor Orman was the only successful favorite and Merry George was the single one of the many "good things" to get home in front. Numerous scratches spoiled the fourth race and another at a mile was substituted. Gold Enamel, which finished .among the also rana In the third, was in such bad bodily condition aud made such a poor showing that the stewards decided to refuse his entry hereafter. After the race J. Clay, trainer of Sailor Knot, put in a claim for Gold Enamel which the stewards would not allow, basing their action on the fact that Clay was not the owner of Sailor Knot. A meeting of the Jockey Club directors will be held tomorrow when the question of extending the meeting wil be decided.' Clears $1,000 for His New Owner CLEARS $1,000 FOR HIS NEW OWNER. When King Henry took place money in the Hln- ' doo Stakes at Gravesend Wednesday, an inter-' esting yarn developed. King Henry is a three-year-old gelding, by Sir Dixon Sallle of Navarre, hence a half brother to Salvidere, the champion two-year-old. He was bred by the late S. S. Brown, but for some reason did not race as a, two-year-old. Last spring Robert Tucker brought him east, expecting to make a series of cleanups. JThe gelding started a number of times with heavy backing, but -was in each Instance badly beaten. Then Tucker sold him in disgust to Frank .Brown, who had the same kind of distressing luck with him. In despair Brown finally disposed of him for $300 to A. Cefalo, a Coney Island dance hall proprietor, who had developed a hankering for the turf and its vicissitudes.- When Accountant and Bel-mere were scratched King Henry was sure o third money, $750, no matter how far he finished in the rear, but when he actually managed to beat Vendor for the place Cefalo not only got his purchase money of $500 back together with his $250 subscription, but also cleaned up $1,000 besides, aa the place money amounted to $1,750. The closing odds against the horse Landsman,' which finished second in the last race at Gravesend Thursday, should have been 50, 20 and 10 to 1. The error was made in transmission by telegraph. J. B.
