Faumouok's Brilliant Performance Court Dress Takes tho Filly Half of the Produce T. S. Martin Wins the Steeplechase. New York, October 1. The Brighton Beach Racing Association provided a splendid card for the opening day of its October meeting. The two sec-, tions of the rich Produce Stakes of $30,000 for two-year-old colts and two-year-old fillies respectively, were won by Electioneer and Court Dress. Both races produced brilliant contests with the result In doubt almost to the closing strides. In the colt race De Mund the favorite, carried a fortune In wagers as did McCarter, the second choice. Electioneer being entirely neglected in the betting. Bad starling aud foul riding played an important part in deciding this race. The winner had every ad-9 vantage of a good start, pace, vigorous ride and clear sailing and scored a lucky victory. De Mund suffered at the sendoff and tired after an early effort to dispose of McCarter, which beat the barrier. The Newcastle stable representative was beaten on Ills merits. Their jockeys, Radtke and Miller respectively, rode rough shod over the others m the backstretch and were questioned by the stewards. There was a long delay before the original placing was confirmed. To the gigantic Pauuionok, running for the first time In the name and colors of Harry Payne Whitney, belonged all the glory of the race. Virtually left at the post, lie closed an immense gap and finished running three feet to the leader's one. Horsemen declared that J'aiiniojiok mar, be the .two-year-old. colt ,pf the. Thomas Barbary Belie, runner-up In the filly half of the big stake, impressed oxperts. Only two favorites were successful, Court Dress, at prohibitive odds and T. S. Martin, winner of the steeplechase for three-year-olds. The majority of the speculatively inclined kept oT this race, In which the young cross-country horses were making their debuts. Outsiders accounted for the remainder of the card. Dr. Gardner led off with a decisive victory lti the opening sprint. Halifax, favorite and heavily supported, trailed In the dust. The defeat of First Mason In a selling race, the sixth at a mile and a quarter, by Bed Friar, was a stunning surprise, whereas the filling of the favored positions in the last by outsiders occasioned no comment out uf the ordinary. Frank J. Bryan has been appointed second patrol judge on Jockey Club tracks and will be stationed on the midway of the backstretch. Shields Again Quarrels with Shaw SHIELDS AGAIN QUARRELS WITH SHAW. New York. October 1. Willie Shaw will not ride again this year on the horses runniug In the names of E. U. Thomas and Alex Shields. Because of the way he handled Diamond hi the first race on Thursday, Shields became very angry. It is said, and made a complaint to the stewards, who according to report, did not agree witli the fault finding trainer. .Shields, however, has declared that Shaw could not ride for him again. Saturday he put Miller on Hall-fax and Hlldebrand on Onatas, further indicating his displeasure. Shaw's friends say that he did his best with Diamond, also that if Shields had permitted Shaw to ride Go Between in recent races under waiting orders the Meddler horse would have made a much better showing. Shields, -It Is understood, ordered Shaw to take Go Between, who is essentially a stretch runner, to the front, with the result that the Suburban winner has gone steadily backward in form. Shields has found fault with numerous jockeys. He had trouble with Shaw once before this season, but it was patched up. The present breach, however, Is probably a permanent one, for there is much ill feeling between the jockey aud the trainer. No Chance for Match Race NO CHANCE FOR MATCH RACE. New York, October 1. Irlooks now as If there is no further chance for a mutch race between Boseben and Lady Amelia. In the first place It is said that the Lady Amelia people have cold feet, while It is also asserted that the Westchester Racing Association, following the policy of the Jockey Club, will not make a move to foster such turf events. In fact, It Is generally understood that the Jockey Club made It plain to P.. J. Dwyer, when the match was called off on Thursday, that it would be advisable to let the matter drop then and there. Match races have never been looked upon with favor by the Jockey Club, so that all further chances for a meeting between Boseben aud Lady Amelia appear to be of no account. New French Track is Popular NEW FRENCH TRACK IS POPULAR. The new racetrack at Le Tremblay has been formally opened, and will be a strong bidder for popular favor in France. It Is located near Nogent, east of Paris. The graudstands and general equipment are described as embodying the best features in modern race course improvements. The minister of agriculture was present, and conferred decorations ou the ollicials. A. T. A. Directors Meet at Louisville: Jockeys Treubel and J. Perry as having acted in collusion with him, had a long hearing before the directors, but up to the time of adjournment at 1 o'clock this afternoon no decision had been reached. The members, with the exception of J. L. Rhinock, who left this afternoon for Cincinnati, are in session tonight, but a decision in the matter had not been reached when Daily Racing Form went to press. " Mohawk II. Outswims a Tugboat MOHAWK II. OUTSWIMS A TUGBOAT. New York, October 1. Mohawk II. couldn't win a running race this year, but' he beat out the lug-boat C. C. Clark in a race 'iu East river Saturday. Mohawk IJ. and nine .of his stablemates. were-brought In froiu,theheetf3liea(nBajti;a:cT'er"'t Long island railroad, on their way to John San-ford's farm at Amsterdam. The cars were switched into the yards and run down to the foot of Sixth street, where New York Central float No. 20 was waiting for them. The tug C. C. Clark was made fast to. the lloat. Just when the noonday whistles screeched out Mohawk II. dashed to the end of the pier and leaped Into the water. The crew of the tug cast off from the float and started after Mohawk II., which in the meantime had struck out vigorously for the New York shore. Some men in a rowboat attempted to head Mohawk II. off, and one of the occupants tried to grab its head, but the terrified horse struck the boat with a forefoot, nearly overturning It. In the meantime the Clark headed him toward the Long Island shore. The horsemen on the wharf had a rope all ready to drop over the swimmer's headf provided he came near enough. When Mohawk II. neared the wharf, however, he again turned back hito' the stream. For twenty minutes horse and tug circled around until the animal became tired and swam straight ahead of the boat for the wharf, where the noose was dropped over his head. By means of a notched plank Mohawk II. was finally got on the pier. He did not seem any the worse for his swim. Twenty Leading Jockeys TWENTY LEADING JOCKEYS. Walter Miller needs to ride only nineteen more winners to tie the record set by Hlldebrand In 1004 for the greatest number of winners ridden in any one year. In that year Hlldebrand rode 207 winners. Tlie previous best record was 202 made by C. Reiff In 1S00. In nine months Miller has ridden in 1,035 races. Few jockeys have ridden more than 1,000 races In any one year. In 1S09 Tommy Burns rode 1,064; In 1001 Winnie O'Cnonor rode 1,047; the following year J. Ranch had 1,000 mounts; in 1004 Hlldebrand was up In 1,160 races and last year W. Knapp rode In 1,021. So Miller has better than an outside chance to set two new marks this year. Last week he rode eight winners. In this he was duplicated by Garner. Nlcol was inactive during the week. Four Favorites Win at Hamilton Track: Sharpshooters Back Wabash Queen and Knobhampton - Captain Hayes and Sam Parmer Fall FOUR FAVORITES WIN AT HAMILTON TRACK. Sharpshooters Back Wabash Queen and Knobhampton Captain Hayes and Sam Parmer Fall. Hamilton, Ont., October 1. The sharpshooters got busy today. Wabash Queen in the fourth race, and Knobhampton in the sixth, backed from 30 to 20, were their two good things. The other five races were taken by four favorites and a second choice. Plantagenet and Father Catchem were heavily backed but failed to make good. Captain Hayes and Sam Parmer came to grief simultaneously when half the distance in the steeplechase had been traversed. The horses were subsequently mounted by stable hands and Captain Hayes would have got third money had he not run out in the stretch. Sara Parmer finished the course and got third. Starter Murray suspended Swain for the remainder of the meeting for breaking up starts In the fourth and Burton and Hogg were each fined $15 for disobedience at post in the second. Gold Run was bid up $305 over entered price by C. Phair and retained by the owner. Secretary Loudon had Washington, the colored steeplechase rider, arrested for creating a disturbance at the track during the morning. It took three husky constables to get ' Washington to the city lockup. His case will come up In the police court Friday. Fred Gerhardy leaves for Montreal Wednesday night to act as starter at the two days' meeting of the Montreal Hunt Club. Madden's Estimation of Salvidere MADDEN' S ESTIMATION OF SALVIDERE. It is not often that John E. Madden waxes so enthusiastic" over racehorses as to proclaim this or that one "the greatest horse of the century," .but just at the present time he Is bubbling over with praise regarding tiie prowess of Salvlderc, and says modestly that "Salvlderc is in the same class as Hamburg, and the latter, you know, was In a class to .himself-'.' . .... l Tills is high praise, coming from Madden"""Nb one who saw Hamburg race will ever forget that line thoroughbred. His effort In the Great Eastern Handicap, which he won in such commanding 'style, placed him high above all other champion two-year-olds. In that race lie carried 135 pounds aud beat his opponents by a city block, after forty-five minutes' delay at the post, during which he ran three separate quarters In as many false breaks. Captain Greer's Stud Farm in Ireland: Slieve Gallion Gets His Name from a Mountain in the Emerald Isle CAPTAIN GREER'S STUD FARM IN IRELAND.- Slieve Gallion Gets His Name from a Mountain id the Emerald Isle. Captain Greer, owner of Slieve Gallion, the best two-year-old in England and expected to be tha favorite for the Derby of next year, has a neat little establishment known as Bruree, near Knor-kany, In County Limerick, Ireland. This farm ia situated just below the mountain from , which' the famous colt derives his name and in the same range of hills lie Galtee More and Ard Patrick, after? which were named the Derby winners raised by John Gubblns, both of which' owed their supremacy, to the magnificent grass, thanks ' to its limestone subsoil and frequent rainfall, County Limerick always produces. Captain Greer was already known to fame as a' horseman before he secured the black wonder, now: considered the most valuable racehorse In training. The Bruree farm has sent out Wildfowler, winner of the St. Leger, and many other valuable raced. Like Wildfowler, Slieve Gallion is a son of Galllnule, which earned undying fame .as the sire of Pretty, Polly. Galllnule himself was not a good racehorse, though well bred, being by Isonony the best son, of Sterling whose dam was Isola Bella, by Stock-well, so Inheriting blood of Irish Birdcatcher on both sides of his lineage. During his racing career this now famous sire was owned by Abington Balrd. the all-round sport, who died at New Orleans Just after his protege, Charley Mitchell, had been de clsively beaten In the prize ring by Jim Corbett. After the death of the Squire, as Balrd was familiarly called, most of his horses reverted to Mrs. Langtry, but Galllnule was not considered worthy to bear the white and gold colors of the actress, so he was sold for a small sum to go to Ireland. Since leaving England lie has done wonders, and even should.
