Last Four Races Are Run in Sloppy Going Grandpa Falls at the First Jump and Mr. Hayes Is Knocked Out. Xew York. October 0. Up to 2 o clack today the most beautiful of autumn weather prevailed and an unusually large crowd journeyed to Belmont Park to see an interesting card of six races decided. A miniature cyclone struck the race course during the running of the third race and the juvenile racers were invisible to the spectators until nearing the finish. The force of the gale drove the rain into the furthermost corners of the large grandstand and nearly everyone sought refuge underneath. .V number of benches were blown down, creating a momentary panic. Altogether it was the most cheerless and actually disappointing day of the season. The last three races were run over a canal-like track. Society turned out in force to .see the rnnnlng of the Corinthian Steeplechase ITandlcap, over the full course, in which gentlemen jockeys disported themselves. Grandpa, ridden by his owner, W. C. Hayes, started an odds-on favorite and carried limit wagers of the clubhouse contingent. Mr. Hayes came to grief at the very first jump, being knocked out completely. It was generally remarked that the ambulance van arrived-on the scene in an incredibly short time. The injured rider when picked up was quite limp and seemingly dead and there was a great commotion in the clubhouse- enclosure: Mr. Hayes recovered shortly after, however, and was able to walk back to the scales room unassisted. After the accident the favorite, Yama Christy, .skillfully handled by Mr. Devereaux, went on and easily disposed of the others. The other stake fixture on the card was the I'alrvlew Selling, at a mile and a sixteenth. R. H. McC. Potter scored easily from four others with his homebred filly, Belle of Pequest, which was a hot favorite. Grapple won at the first asking in the colors of his new Owner, Frank J. Farrell. The Tammany crowd won a lot of money over the Drake cast-off's victory. The success of four favorites brought considerable relief to the speculatively-lnclined public and it was a cheery crowd that wended their way homeward at the close of the day's racing. The experiment of running all races at six and ii half furlongs and under over the straightaway at Belmont Park, inaugurated yesterday, is an unpopular move. The third and fifth races today at live and a half and six and a half furlongs respcc-lively, were decided over that course and the rain .Did mist obscured the view of their early running entirely, so much so that in the case of the former no official time was taken. Racing Officials Soak Belligerents: Bookmakers Alvey and Stephens Are Fined $1,000 Each and Debarred from Churchill Downs JtACING OFFICIALS SOAK BELLIGERENTS. Bookmakers Alvey and Stephens Are Fined $1,000 Each and Debarred from .Churchill Downs. Louisville, Ky., October 0. Alvey and Sam. Stephens are each fined $1,000 and suspended from all of the privileges of this course during the remaining days of the present meeting. Each of the said parties Is prohibited from making a book, racing a horse or participating in any manner in the races during the continuance of this meeting." Alvey had entered Kohnotlaw in the second race nnl McChord and ilazelthorpe in the third race. The judges ordered that these horses be withdrawn. Alvey appeared in the local court this morning in the charge of murderous assault, but the case .was continued until Saturday next. Marty Bergen's Funeral Today MARTY BERGEN'S FUNERAL TODAY. Williams, the manager of Hermitage Stud, for a. lease on the property. Since disposing of his Kdenwold Farm, Mr Parmer has kept his thoroughbreds in a portion of the Belle Meade' Farm. . '. Thousands Visit Montreal's New Track: Grand Ovation to Racing - Organizers of the Montreal Jockey Club Are Highly Encouraged THOUSANDS VISIT MONTREAL'S NEW TRACK. Grand Ovation to Racing Organizers of the Mon-treal Jockey Club Are Highly Encouraged. What was intended for a modest little meeting of the Montreal Hunt at the Montreal Jockey Club's new track Saturday developed into one of the grandest ovations to the thoroughbred ever witnessed in Canada. Where hundreds were expected, thousands' came, and this in spite of untoward, weather conditions. Montreal folk surprised, even themselves, and the whole town is now talking of its beautiful new track and swearing fealty to the thoroughbred. The clubhouse, which is larger than that at Sheeps-head, was crowded with the best people of eastern Canada. Its three balconies were not roomy enough to hold the fashionable throng, and after 'lunch had been served the big dining room, which runs full length of the second floor,, had to be cleared for" the guests. Vehicles of all kinds filled the five-acre inclosure and the chug-chug of automobiles imparted to the whole a metropolitan air. Out in the grandstand, which is not yet' finished, the band of the Victoria Rifles, the best in Montreal, played its most enlivening airs to a crowd so large the Montreal Jockey Clifiv is seriously considering the advisability of ' doubling the size of that structure before next June. The Hunt meet has been a great advertisement to the new track. Seven thousand people have seen the plant, and nearly 3,000 society folk have enjoyed the comforts of its clubhouse. General Manager MacDonald, of the street railway, who keeps a close watch on crowds, says he expects to have to handle 30,000 passengers on the opening day next year. Saturday next, the Foxhunters'- Association, of Montreal will run their steeplechases' at the new track. This Is a French-Canadian organization, and, although not much from a- racing viewpoint; the attraction will be great! . ' It' is 'expected that 10,000 persons will attend. Mayor Ekers will act as 'steward. - r- -. . .. . y.j Holscher to be Entered at Bennings HOLSCHER TO BE1 ENTERED' ' AT ' BENNINGS. A couple of years ago William Shields took .a maiden caljed Ben Crockett to Bennlngs and won the Maximum ' Stakes, three miles, the longest race of the eastern season, with him. Last season Ben Crockett, running under the colors of the Queen City Stable, of Canada, won the Maximum Stakes a second time, but not until he had taken the Washington Cup, two miles and' a quarter, the best distance event; of the Bennlngs fall session. Xow that Holscher has won the Brighton .Cup, showing that there is more in him than the experts were willing to admit a little while back. Shields is determined to try for the Maximum' and the Washington Cup with him this. fall. .Ajsc Holscher will be named for the Bennings Special, a .race of one mile and a half, for three-year-olds and over. "Entering this horse at Bennlngs is well worth while," says young Shields, "because he is a belter horse than Ben Crockett ever. was. He can tun faster that Ben and he can go farther.' I did not take a foolish chance when I bought the right to race him in the Brighton Cup. I believed he had better than an outside chance, because lie had shown me in races and in work that ho liked a distance of ground. I knew that he was ready, and I felt that If either Proper or the mare stopped in front he would beat them. Holscher always runs well for Xoone. Why, I cannot tell. Neither can anyone else. He seems to. understand my boy, and the boy knows him better than any of the alleged star riders I have put on his back." Future of Breeding Bureau is Assured FUTURE OF BREEDING BUREAU IS ASSURED. The stallions most recently acquired by Xew York's Breeding Bureau are Saccbarometer, by The Judge Sacharlsa, and Merry Lark, by Jim Gore Twitter. Saccharometer is a ' brown horse, sixteen hands high, of exquisite conformation and will weigh fully 1,100 pounds. Merry Lark is too well known to need especial commendation. He was a high class stake, winner, a sturdy racehorse and a horse of the conformation to improve the breed of horses in the state, of Xew York. Some queries have been received by the Breeding Bureau of the Jockey Club as to soundness of the stallions placed by them. It Is pertinent to say that no horse has been placed by the" Breeding Bureau that possesses, any possible hereditary unsoundness. Of course, these horses in some intances are not racing sound, as very few horses that have been tried and raced are without some blemish, such as a bowed tendon, a wind puff or some Injury. However, with the care and rest they will receive on the farms these blemishes will rapidly and entirely disappear. Six of the Breeding Bureau's selections have been exhibited at the agricultural fairs of the state of Xew York, five having received first premiums and one second. All in all the Breeding Bureau of the Jockey Club has succeeded beyond its most sanguine expectations and its future seems assured. . - - Belmere Has Had a Rough Time of It BELMERE HAS HAD A ROUGH TIME OF IT. The third race at Brighton Eeach Saturday was the ilrst Belmere, one of the most successful three-year-olds of the early part of the season, has won since the Brooklyn Derby. "Belmere ' is hot the horse he. was in the spring," says the Morning Telegraph. "A lot taas':-Jqpene4.-t6' BereSlnce the Brooklyn Derby. He has bowed a tendon and he has been Castrated. His people do . not consider him a stake horse any more. They will be satis-fled if he continues to win selling . races. Since he Is in- excellent condition just now he should ' land several' selling races before snow flies." John M. P. Falls in Work at Belmont: Was Expected That He Would Fancy the Stiff Course - Harp Player and Alfar Jump Well JOHN M. P. FALLS IN WORK AT BELMONT. Was Expected that He Would Fancy the Stiff Course Harp Player and Alfar Jump Well. Xew York, October 9. Contrary to expectations, John M. P. has no particular fancy for the steeplechase course at Belmont Park. While schooling last Saturday he bit every hedge and fell at the last fence. The jumps at Belmont Park are constructed more after the manner of those on the English courses than any in this country, consequently It was presumed that John M. P. would get over them better than he did those at Sheeps-head Bay. It may be that his schooling over the lower jumps has affected him. It is the belief of his people that he will make a better showing next time. Harp Player, the three-year-old half sister to Hercnloid, has shown better over the Belmont Park course than any of the horses yet schooled there. Harp Player is a dandy' looking bay filly. She has a free, swinging stride through the field, and when she comes to a fence takes it without the slightest apparent hesitation, going over cleanly and gracefully, not too high nor too low, but just at the proper height to escape hitting. It Is hardly probable that Harp Player -will start In the Harbor Hill, although she is entered. The reason for this is that Colonel Bob Neville thinks too much of her to race In this somewhat harrowing contest for young horses and prefers to save her for the Champion next year. "I think it was the Harbor Hill that staled Hercnloid," said Colonel Neville. "I firmly believe that if it hadn't been for that he would have developed into the greatest jumper this country has ever seen. Harp Player is like him in many respects, and I don't see the necessity for spoiling her prospects." Colonel Xevllle will probably start Mr. McCann in the Harbor Hill. This husky black gelding, by Contract Lady Wooster, has shown graUfynjr, speed and .ability , to jump, ;and he. should prove a strong- contender 'lnffiebig'' ihfee"ryeaTr-61d'" race. Among the other horses which have come to grief in exercising over the stiff course are Mr. Cotton's St. Kevin and Thomas Hitchcock, Jr.'s Vendor. In spite of Jhe falls they may perform well in the Harbor Hill. Vendor is Mr. Hitchcock's hope in the race. Locked Out, from the same stable, may start, but their owner looks for Vendor to make the best showing. The Bonnie- Brook Stable's Alfar always schools almost perfectly, but It must be admitted that his racing has not been up to his work. Any one who saw him .Saturday at Belmont, however,, would select him as a favorite in the Champion. Jinimie Johnson's three-year-old Realm, was. given a satisfactory tryout. He is a game youngster, and In his two races at Brighton ran and jumped well. Johnson thinks he will win the Harbor Hill, but -it must be confessed that one of Johnson's most noticeable characteristics one, however, that is to be strongly commended is that he always thinks he will win. '3 Louisville, Ky., October 9. It was cold and disagreeable at Churchill Downs this afternoon, but the racing was snappy and interesting. Speculators found the selection of winners a task which resulted to the general benefit of the bookmakers. In the cases of Frontenac and Wexford, however,-the bookmakers paid out heavily. Rone Respess , had four starters during the afternoon Caper, Posing, Martha Gorman and Judith Louise and the Cincinnati tnrman was laying up some little store of expectation that each might land a purse. Through mishaps of racing, and poor riding, however, not one of them managed to land in front-In the first race C. Koerncr lost one of his stirrups shortly after the start and the best Caper could do was a good third. Posing got away badly In the. second and exhausted his early speed In an effort to Improve his position. This beat him. Martha Gorman, regarded as the best betting proposition of the day and backed accordingly, was not ridden any too well by NIcol. She was away well enough, but was bothered in the early part of the Journey and Xicol failed to keep her up close' enough to Frontenac, the leader, evidently believing that the latter would stop. She made her usual game finish and landed In second place, beating Charlie Eastman a head. .. Bespess. rallied -toV Jndlth Louise? : commission giving her a slight place of favorltsisra over Sainrida and Light Wool. The filly was pacemaker nntil inside the furlong when Sainrida and Light Wool closed up fast, the two of them just beating; her out in a tight fit. TJie handicap was one of the best races of its kind during the meeting. The Canadian contingent believed they had the' race at their mercy with Wexford, but they bided their time until the price had gone to 7 to 1. Then they got busy, hammering the odds down to 4 ,to 1. Carrying 116 pounds and conceding weight to all his competitors, Wexford ran a notable race, forcing Hannibal Bey into subjection, then withstanding the challenge of El Otros and winning easily. The time, 1:39, lowers the track race record of 1:40 previously held by His Excellency. Arrivals from Hamilton today were A. K. MlfTer, six horses; Peter Vorman, one, and H. H. Aiken, one. Three carloads stopped over at Latonla and will remain for the meeting there. Frank "Smith also got back from the fair at Springfield, 111., with his Mamie Algol. Jockey W. Fischer, who rides I for J. B. Dunn, arrived from Hamilton. John Ireland's Yearlings JOHN IRELAND'S YEARLINGS. Lexington, Ky., October 9. "Rumors are current among the turfmen of England that another 'American invasion' of their tracks is apt to take place next year," says the Xew York World. "It is reported there that W. K. Vanderbllt, James R. Keene, Perry Belmont. Harry Payne Whitney and several other millionaire lovers of the -racehorse on this side, contemplate liaving extensive racing stables at the British tracks next year. These reports have not been verified, but seem to find credence In well informed turf circles. The anti-American feeling on the English tnrf Is not nearly so strong as it was several years ago, but whether this is due to the absence of winning American stables or an actual dying out f the prejudice against our racing men is hard to say."
