SCHULTE'S FILLY WINS THE HUNTER HANDICAP AT BELMONT IN 1:38 4-5. Belle of request's Splendid Performance Brookdalo Nymph Unfit Slow Time on the Straight-away Weather Is Bitter Cold. ' New York, October 11. There was a touch of winter in the air today and racing at Belmont Park was conducted under conditions that called for fur coats and mufflers. The mercury hovered around the freezing point, but a great crowd of enthusiasts, the reclusive set predominating, was on hand to witness the running of a splendid card of sis races. Races on the straightaway were run in very slow time today, owing to the thirty mile an hour gale that blew up the stretch. With the wind at her back on the circular course, Zienap was able to get a fast clip and there was general surprise expressed when the time. 1:38 for the mile was hung out. W. F. Scbulte's consistent mare performed grandly in the Uunter Ilandicap, the solitary stake feature of the day. There was a tremendous plunge on Brookdale Nymph, which was at odds-on in the betting. The Whitney lilly dropped out of it in a manner that Indicated that she was uuflt or disliked the reverse way of running. The inconsistent Belle of Pequest ran a phenomenal race and but for early misfortune could hardly have lost. An enormous field started in the opening race at seven furlongs. Apprentice riders were ridden exclusively in this affair. Mary B. Clark, which was backed to win at long odds, jumped the fence on her way to the post and the race was run without her. The steeplechase for three-year-olds was pronounced the mest interesting affair of its kind that has ever taken place in this country. The entire field maintained close order for a mile. As many as seven of the contestants taking the Liverpool in front of the clubhouse together. The winner, St Kevin, as well as Mr. McCann and Sauctus, the placed horses, are thought to have brilliant futures before them at cross-country racing. , Only one favorite, Vox" Populi, was successful during the afternoon. The Keeue castoff performed like a. cracierjack. .The disqualification : of. Guiding Star in the last race created much excitement The stewards deliberated' "for" a long' time and" "their ruling establishes a uuique precedent. The first race was run over the straightaway instead of the regular course as per program books. The change was ordered by the stewards in deference to a petition presented by the owners and trainers of horses entered in the said race to have it run on the straight course, alleging less liability of accident in such a big field of starters. Jockey Eugene Hildebrand says he will ride at San Francisco exclusively next winter. J. C. Yeager has recovered from a recent attack of illness and will make book at Jamaica and Aqueduct meetings. Martha Gorman Wins in Close Finish: Austin Weighs in Six Pounds over after Riding Goldmate - Gets off with Fine of $25 MARTHA GORMAN WINS IN CLOSE FINISH. Austin Weighs In Six Pounds Over After Riding Goldmate Gets Off with Fino of $25. Louisville, Ky., October 11. The card provided at Churchill Downs today was of more than ordi-, nary merit and the- contests were keen. The 'speculation was brisk. Except in the first race . the fields were moderate numerically , and evenly-" bal-i aiiced as to class of libtss. " 'with" the third and fourth standing out most prominently. The latter,." the handicap, was for all ages at six furlongs and that a number, of speedy twpry.ear'-olds were in light gave tire' race additional interest. At the weight allotments it was an open betting affair, with-Martha Gorman most fancied. The contention in the race was of the sharpest kind from barrier rise to finish, the leaders shifting their positions at various points. In the final drive Martha Gorman gradually vore down Hannibal Bey and beat him out in the tightest finish of the afternoon. Goldmate was' third, a sliort distance back of the pair. With better racing luck he probably would have won. Austin, !who rode the colt-weighed out four and one-half pounds over and when he came back to the scale he weighed in six pounds over. For this breach of the rules he was fined $25. The time of the race equalled the track record held by that fast sprinter, -Tom Hood. In the mile and a half raceJ.C.'.Koerher riding the heavily backed favorite, Miss Rlllie, was .directly responsible for the Cook Ally's defeat. H. C. Riddle claimed Miss Rlllie for 700. Jockey Swain was suspended for six- days by the starter for his bad behavior , at the post. Jockey Moriarity and numerous 'turf followers departed tonight for Dallas, Texas, where the meeting begins Saturday. Speaking of the proposed new race track at Pittsburg today, M. J. Winn said he thought he would be able to announce the purchase of a site this week. The Jockey Club will'kt'bjce' be organized, and the wprk of building the ifrafck will proceed. It appears that building plans and other details have been carefully gone iuto and It is expected that the grandstand and other buildings'- caif-be completed this winter. Oldham Case, Is Argued and Submitted iu the Supremo Court at." Jefferson City.. St. Louis, Mo., October 11. A case which will test the .constitutionality of the law " passed by the last legislature making poolselling and the registration of wagers on horse races in this state a felony, was argued and submitted in the Missouri Supreme Court at Jefferson City today. The case came from Kansas City, where Charles Oldham was convicted and fined $500 for registering bets by telephone hi Kansas City. Kansas, on races which were run on the Elm Ridge race track in Kansas City. The indictment is attacked, on the ground that the law is unconstitutional and also that, if constitutional, registering beta outside of the state is no violation.
