Hot Toddy Scores An Easy Victory in the Dixiana Stakes George S. Davis Upsets the Talent Coup with Optician. New York, October 12. Indian summer resumed its sway at Belmont Park today and, with the splendid card, materially contributed to the. big crowd that journeyed to the magnificentracecourse7 Two interesting stake features were down for decision, the Dixiana Stakes, at a mile, and the great sprinting -fixture, the Manhattan Ilandicap, In which the champion Itoseben was engaged. Davy Johnson's fortunes are so much improved that he was able to buy back his favorite and the others of his stable from L. O. Appleby and Roseben, running in his colors today, brought home a big stake in winning wagers. The market was skillfully manipulated and wonderfully lucrative odds obtained for the owner's $25,000 commission. At the beginning of betting on the race several thousand dollars were thrown away in bets on Suffrage. The layers took afright thereat and laid an abnormally high price against Roseben, with the result that Johnson obtained an average of 13 to 10 against a 1 to 2 chance. Dr. Gardner was a conspicuous absentee from the Dixiana Stakes. Hot Toddy, however, maintained the western prestige in grand style by defeating his opposition with great ease. Those were the, only two public choices that were successful durlug the afternoon. The notorious iu-aud-outcr, George S. Davis,-furnished a 'lilg upset In" the secoudT5w1iTch Toddles, the prohibitive, favorite, met unexpected defeat. Harry K. Knapp's Optician, backed down from 20 to C to 1, won the last in a canter. A lot of money was taken out of the ring over his victory. Mose Goldblatt bought two racehorses today at private sale. The western horsemen paid Jack Baker $1,000 for Adbell and 2,500 to F. E. Gardner for the two-year-old Gargantua. Both are. intended for winter campaigning at New Orleans. G. Burns, the midget apprentice rider, brother to Tommy Burns, will ride at Oakland the comiug winter iu the employ of W. B. Jennings. Alex Shields will spend the winter in California. Lexington, Ky., October 12. -William Steele has . the eight yearlings bought by Paul J. Rainey at the eastern sales about ready for their first trials. They will be asked to show what they can do over the homestretch quarter at the Kentucky Association course as soon as the rainy season ends. The track has not been in shape for fast work hardly a day in the last two weeks. It is likely that October will be well over before any yearlings have show,n a quarter under 24 seconds, let alone anything like a three-eighths which will be much talked about. The colts and fillies bought by turfmen "in the eastern sales are not as forward as the youngsters which have as yet not been far away from home.. In several instances among the former the youngsters plainly show the effects of the trip east' and ba'ct. ApVrule,, the stables are unusually fret from sickness this year, an air of good health prevailing at the gounds. The Rainey yearlings will be shipped to Memphis during the winter and will be in the care of trainer "Bub" May. The list, together with the prices paid for each, is as follows: ' Phoenix National, chestnut colt (brother to Major Daingcrfield), by Handspring Mon Droit .... $5,500 Bay colt (half-brother to John Smulski), by Star Shoot Ellangowah 4,500 Bay colt (half brother to Candida), by Bridgewater Blackheart ...... ..... . : . 2,500 Bay colt (half brother to Hyperion II.), by St. Slmoniau Van-a-Clar 2,000 Bay colt (brother to Eonio), by Eon Mermaid 1,70 Brown colt, by Royal Stag Strathcona Belle 300 Bay filly, by George Kcssler Antiquity..... 200 Bay or brown filly, by Knight of the Thistle Merry Thought 200 The- Merry. Thought filly is a half sister to Merry Acrobat, which as a two-year-old won the White Plains Handicap, beating the sensational Dick Welles. That was the race which cost the bank rolls of several western plungers, who followed Rome Rests' fortunes In the east. This filly is a good looker, has plenty of size-and moves like an old campaigner already. More than one local trainer fancies her as much or even more than any yearling filly trained here this season She looks like a great prospect as a twd-year-old in 1907. Not a Favorite Wins at Louisville Five of the Ten Starters in the Steeplechase . Fail to Finish Gossip. Louisville, Ky., October 12. Favorites were downed in all the races at Churchill Downs today, but the bookmakers did not lay up anything. The sharpshooters were much In evidence. They hit the books heavily over the victories of Lightning Conductor, Hector, Lady Jocclyn and Whlppoorwill. The sport was interesting. The finishes were of the close order and even losers at times felt a thrill of excitement. The steeplechase was replete with mishaps. At the list jump St. Volma went down. Of the ten starting only .five covered the course safely. Lady Jocelyn, the winner, ran a race some--tiling near to the form that had ben expected of .h'er probably through the superior judgment of Archibald, who piloted her. When Gus Lanka went down at the third jump he rolled over YourelL The boy however, got up, shook himself and walked to the paddock. Pierce, who rode St. Volma, was pretty badly shaken up. He was bruised about the face and chest but was not seriously hurt. There was much jamming in the Hector race shortly after the start. C. Morris, on Retropaw, was held most to blame and was suspended for the remainder of the meeting. The surprise of the afternoon was In the "opening race when Lady Ethel, neglected in the betting, won handily. Jockey O. Far West, King of the Mudlarks FAR WEST, KING OF THE MUDLARKS. Commenting upon the performance of Far West at Belmont Park Wednesday the New York World says: "Far West clinched his claim to King of the Mudlarks. Over the heavy track at Belmont Park he ran the mile course, around two turns, in l:38g. This was a marvellous performance, as the track-record made by Kiamesha when the course was dry, is 1:37J. When the time of the fourth race, was hung out racegoers were, astounded and turning to one another said: 'There must be some mistake. Surely Far West never ran that fast over such a heavy track.' A canvass of the trainers who timed the race independently of W. H. Barretto, the official timer, fixed the time hung out as correct. One or two horsemen said that they timed the race a fraction of a second better. The track was so deep in mud that eight out of the original twelve entries were withdrawn early in the day.""'; Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM ISSUED EVERY DAY. DAILY ifftlNG FORM PUBLISHING CD. Pimlico's Fall Stakes Fill Splendidly: Maryland Jockey Club to Have Good Meeting in November-Stake Named for Late Mr. Walden PIMLICO'S FALL STAKES FILL SPLENDIDLY. Maryland Jockey Club to Have Good Meeting in November Stake Named for Late Mr. Walden. Baltimore, Md., October 12. The stakes of the Maryland Jockey Club, which closed October 1, to be rjin at the fall meeting at Pluilico, beginning Novmber 1, show an increase in number over former stakes and a decided improvement in the class of the entries, conditions for which the management has. been striving for. The Clabaugk Memorial for foals of .1905 was closed this, fall, to be run at the spring meeting of 1907, as it was thought the closing of the stake In the fall would lend an additional interest to the owners and breeders of yearlings in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and District of Columbia, to which locality the stake was limited. It would seem the change was a wise one, since fifty -four colts have .been entered for the stake, twenty-three being Maryland-bred, twenty-five from Virginia and . six from Pennsylvania. The interest of the breeder Is further kept up by the addition of $200 In plate to the breeder of the winner. The stake was won in the spring of 1903 by the late Wynilham Walden with a Maryland-bred colt. J. E. Lane won In 190(5 with a colt from Virginia. The two-year-old stake to be run at the fall meeting Is called the Walden. It is at six furlongs, and is. named for the late Wyndham Walden, who probably did more for racing in Maryland than any one man. There are thirty-three entries to the stake, and among the number are the colts of many old friends of the man from whom it took its name. Page 3 Big Wagers Made by Haggin and Daly '- BIG WAGKRB MADE BY HAG GIN AND DALY. Durlngr a recent visit to Lexington, Ky., Join Mackey was one of a party of turfmen who gathered In the lobby of the Phoenix Hotel to "talk hoss." The conversation finally turned to betting and then to plunging stories of the heavy betting of "Pittsburg Phil," Mike Dwycr, John A. Drake, John W. Gates, Riley Grannan, Davy Johnson and others here and gone. Mackey then told of two incidents in the lives of J. B. Haggin and the late Marcus Daly, neither of which was ever known as a "plunger," which probably excel any huge winnings on a single race ever made by the big operators noted above. When Ben AH won the Kentucky Derby, Mr. Haggin authorized Lucicn Appleby to buy every pool sold on the son of Virgil, and the California Croesus won the entire pool box on the race. The amount wagered must have been over $100,000, as Blue Wing, Free Knight and other starters in that race had hundreds of warm supporters. That was the spring Colonel M. Lewis Clark, president of the Louisville Jockey Club, had bis famous quarrel with the Western Bookmakers' Association, and noiie of the bookies went on. It was the luckiest play they ever made, as had they done business that day and taken the money they would have lost their bankrolls to Haggin on the race. Ben All was trained for the race by Jim Murphy and ridden by Patsy Duffy. Haggin never knew it, but both his trainer and jockey were drunk the night before the race. Had he been aware of the condition of his stable it is likely he would not have wagered a dollar on his great horse. Th& other race Mackey noted was the Futurity won by the late Marcus Daly's Ogden. The books took the money, laying long odds against Ogden, owing -to Tuberville having the mount on the colt. Mackey says Daly won every dollar of 250,000 on that race, as his agents were even betting and the books taking the money when the field was running the last quarter. Ogden is now a star in the stud of J. E. Madden at Hamburg Place, and be is making a good as a sire. W. J. Young's Seven Yearlings W. J. YOUNG'S SEVEN YEARLINGS. Lexington, Ky., October 12. W. J. Yonng has purchased seven yearlings and is now breaking them at the Kentucky Association track. "It is understood that the Jockey Club stewards will pay all expenses of Marty Bergen's funeral," says the New York World. "This action will amend in small part for the many fines that Bergen had paid into 'the fund for disabled jockeys.' During the many years he rode, Marty was at war with James F. Caldwell, who years ago, was the starter at all the local race tracks. During this period he paid to the various racing associations the aggregate sum of 10,000. A fifteenth part of that amount would more than pay the expenses of his fuueral and keep his widow for a few mouths until she has time to make arrangements for permanent support." Would Have the Ambulance Ready WOULD HAVE THE AMBULANCE READY. In getting to W. C. Hayes after Grandpa fell with him at .Belmont Park Tuesday, the ambulance broke all records for speed. .The nfatter was made the subject of general comment by the New York papers. The Morning Telegraph concludes its comments with thia: "There doesn't seem to be any good reason why the ambulance should not be taken into the field before the start of a steeplechase. This has been frowned upon as being too suggestive of accidents, but there is no good ground for . the maintenance of such a position." Churchill Downs Form Chart CHURCHILL DOWNS FORM CHART.
