Daniel Wins the Nursery Stakes Alfar Scores in the Brook Cup Steeplechase Sewell Equals a Track Record. Now York, October 13. Ideal, autumn, weather ami the best card of the meeting brought 25,000 racegoers to Belmont Fark this afternoon. The splendid program was composed of three important stake fixtures. The Brook Cup Steeplechase Handl-. cap, over the full course of three miles; the rich Nurseiy Handicap for two-year-olds, over the six furlongs straightaway; the Municipal Handicap, at one mile and tliree-qnarters for three-year-olds and upward, and three Interesting overnight purse races. There were good fields in all of the races and mnny high-class horses were engaged. Dishabille, George C. Bennett's grand little mare, vanquished good handicap horses In -the Municipal. There was great rejoicing, nmong the western contingent over her pronounced victory. Her owner and friends took a lot of money out of the ring in winning wagers, the Tennessee-bred four-year-old lx'lng. In fact, the best backed horse in the race. W. H. Daniel confirmed his splendid Sheepshead Bay form by leading a field of the best class two-year-olds in training home in the Nursery Handicap. A big commission from his owners E;-S.,-Burke;- Jrv a young Cleveland millionaire and friend of the Ralney Brothers, was responsible for the short price laid against the Woolsthorpe' colt, at the close. Fonntainblue, ridden by Shaw, performed inglori-ously in this race and his pretentions to high class among the two-year-olds of this season were shattered completely. Sewell performed brilliantly .-in the opening seven furlongs condition race, defeating the Metropolitan Handicap winner Grapple over his favorite course and distance and equalling the track record of 1:25 made by Aeronaut last fall. Hylas bolted the course when winning easily in the steeplechase allowing Alfar to get up and score at the end. Two gentlemen jockeys, C. Smith and Devcreaux riding respectively Woolgatherer and Yama Christy, put up a rare exhibition, in the saddle. The alleged windmill of steel construction erected by the poolroom interests this week' on a hill facing J he Belmont backstretch, came to an untimely end. It was dynamited during the night by unknown miscreants and rendered so unsafe that the poolroom lookouts, did not venture to ascend it today for the purpose of getting the results. Important Sale at Lexington IMPORTANT SALE AT LEXINGTON. I.exinglon. Ky., October 13. The sale of thoroughbred horses which is to be held here under the auspices of the Fasig-Tipton Company, beginning November 20, will be one of the most important in this section in the past half-a-dozen years. It will le marked by the dispersal of four studs. A clause in the will of the late Captain S. S. Brown makes it imperative that the executor of his estate sell all the stallions and mares at Senorita Farm. The farm Itself however, doesnot necessarily have to be sold by auction. Captain W. Harry Brown has the privilege of retaining this by satisfying the other heirs of his deceased brother. He has made no public announcement of his intentions. Some persons, however, who profess to know his plans, say that he was so impressed with the high average obtained for the yearlings from Senorita Farm last pprtng that he deems it good business policy to continue the breeding establishment under the management of Max Samuelson. These persons expect to see him the buyer of the choicest of the mares. There Is apt to le stout bidding for Garry Hermann. This horse has shown that, properly muted, he will make good as a sire. Another stud to be dispersed Is Oakwood, wh,ich wan so successfully conducted by Charles F. Mc-MeeUin, who lost his life In the wreck at Salisbery, ' England, July 1. Like Captain Brown, Mr. Mc-Meekln specified-in his will that his horses should all be sold. Woolsthorpe is the premier stallion at oakwood and among the mares is Sallie of Navarre, the dam of Salvidere. ft. Hi Anderson will part with all of the horses in Tea's Over Stud, which was named in honor of the dam of Dick Welles, Ort Wells and Security. David Gideejp,' when he leased Holmdel Farm in New Jersey, to E. R. Thomas, removed all of his mares to Kentucky. He has now decided to depart from the ranks or the breeders and to devote his time exclusively to racing. He will sell these mares, bufwlll retain his yearlings and weanlings. In addition to all of the breeding stock, there will be largo consignments of yearlings from Milton Young's McGrathiana Stud, James B. Haggln's Elmen-dorf Stud, and John B. Madden's Hamburg Place. Many bargains have come out of this late autumn sale .in past years, noticeable Instances being Endurance by Right and Ram's Horn. A crowd of at least 6,000 people crowded the stand while twenty-four bookmakers drew in for three days. The day was cold and threatening and the crowd and business were remarkable under the conditions. The first race resulted in a head victory for Henry Bachelor's fast mare, Lady Vashti, which beat Toots Mook, the Canadian wonder and others. The second race, a selling affair for two-year-olds, went to George Baldwin's Montalbari, which beat The Bear a head. The third race marked the appearance of J. W. Fuller's good colt, First Premium. He was at odds-on and had a busy time to beat Dr. Hollis a head. Durbar k, Scalplock and Hall le Sherman were the other winners. Joseph A. Murphy Is the presiding judge. Vhe meeting . will end October 28. It is being conducted under the auspices of the State Fair of Texas. The veteran breeder and racing man has disposed of all his horses and for more than ar year has been raising fancy poultry and rabbits on. the magnificent estate in Tennessee which was the home of .many noted thoroughbreds. He says he is growing too old to give the farm, the care it requires and for that reason must dispose of it. . Fairview embraces 1,957 acres, of land on the Cumberland River, in Franklin County, Tennessee, and is one mile and a half from St. Blaise station on the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. This station was named in honor of the great English stallion for which Mr. Reed paid $100,000 at the dispersal of the establishment of the elder Belmont several years ago. The old horse is now back in the Nursery Stud at Lexington, Ky., August Belmont having bought him at the sale of Mr. Reed's horses. Miller to Ride for Tom Williams MILLER TO RIDE FOR TOM WILLIAMS. "Boots" Durnell Has Been Reinstated: Announcement is Made of This Action by Pacific Jockey Club Stewards at Belmont Park "BOOTS' DURNELL HAS BEEN REINSTATED. Announcement Is Made of This Action hy Pacific Jockey Club Stewards at Belmont Park. New York, October 13. The announcement, eminating from an authoritative source, lias just been made that C. E. (Boots) Durnell ruled oft for life last winter by the Pacific Jockey. Club for practices at Ascot Park inimical to the best interests of the turf, has been reinstated. Thomas H. Williams, Adam Andrew and W. E. Interest is Rife in the Harbor Hill: Billy Garth Believes in T. S. Martin-St. Kevin May Bring the Cup to Mr. Cotton INTEREST IS RIFE IN THE HARBOR HILL. Billy Garth Believes in T. S. Martin St. Kevin May Bring the Cup to Mr. Cotton. New York, October 13. If history repeats itself, St. Kevin will win the Harbor Hill Steeplechase Cup at Belmont Park next Thursday and the beuti-ful sliver trophy, which in addition to the $3,000 is given by Clarence H. Mackay, will become the permanent property of Mr. Cotton. This race for three-year-old jumpers had its first running last year and was won by Mr. Cotton's Delcanta. Delcanta had previously won the race which was taken by St. Kevin last Thursday. However, it would be hard to convince many local race-goers and particularly the .owners of several of the Harbor Hill eligibles, just at this stage, that history is going to repeat itself. T. S. Martin won the first of the three races that have been run by these youngsters. In the sec-.ond lie. unshipped, his rider and . the s ra.ee--.went to Commodore Fontaine. He was not eligible trrstart in the race won by St. Kevin. It was for maidens. In the first two races Realm finished second.' His showing in the third was too bad to be true. In the race won by St. Kevin, Mr. McCann was a close contender in fast time. So here are five horses that must be given the deepest consideration. Indeed, there will be some sharp betting on this race Thursday. It is clear that Gwyn Tompkins is training a horse of good class in St. Kevin, and no man who handles steeplechasers' better understands schooling a jumper than he does. St. Kevin was bred at James R. Keene's Castleton Stud, and he is u full brother to Virginia Earle and a half brother to Stolen Moments and Ballot. Cerito, his dam, is one of the most highly prized of the matrons at Castleton; She is a. daughter of Lowland Chief 'Merry Dance, by Don caster. Her second dam was .Highland Fling,, by Scottish Chief. Tompkiiis has been working on St. Kevin the better part of the year and he is confident the St.' Leonards gelding has learned the art of jumping. One thing is certain St. Kevin knows the Belmont Park course like a book. The big jumps do not daunt him in the least. Altogether, Mr. Cotton has every reason to feel that he lias as good a horse this season as he had last year In Delcanta. Billy Garth is unreserved in his claim that T. S. Martin will win the narbor mil. He saw St. Kevin win and said after the race: "T. S. Martin will beat that fellow fifty or sixty yards." Garth is not afraid T. S. Martin will make the mistake he did In his second race at Brighton. Gallagher did not know the Virginia gelding well and took him too briskly to his first fence. That was the reason the horse pecked and unseated him. Terry, the regular rider of the Garth stable, who will have the mount in the Harbor Hill, has schooled T. S. Martin all summer and understands the gelding. In Mr. McCann the Neville-Pfizer combination will have a good representative. Mr. McCann is not as fast a jumper as Herculoid, but he is an eminently safe one, and he learned something Thursday. He was as green as could be the first three-quarters of a mile. He all but halted before his fences, and, after taking them, landed flatfooted. But when he got well into the spirit of the race be braced up valiantly and ran and jumped the last mile and a quarter like a veteran. Mr. McCann is a thoroughly schooled and trained horse. Eugene Finnegan will ride him. Best Man Dies at Latonia BEST MAN DIES AT LATONIA. Cincinnati, O., October 13. Best Man, the seven-year-olds sou of Florist Effie C, was found dead in his stall at Latonia yesterday. Best Man was bred by Scoggan Brothers, and later -passed into the hands of Lester Reiff, then to J. Bondy and from him to Pat Knebelkamp. The latter had trained him for Jumping. He showed himself to be pretty shifty at it, and Knebelkamp turned down an offer of $1,500 for him. The horse injured his leg in the early part of the Latonia spring meeting, and as Knebelkamp got into trouble later lie gave the horse ,to Frank Duffy, the ex-steeplechase jockey. Duffy got the horse up again, and had him in training at Latonia and expected to start him ak New Orleans. . Lyne Returns to Kentucky LYNE RETURNS TO KENTUCKY. Lexington, Ky., October 13. Lucien Lyne, who recently announced Msretlrement from the saddle because of his inability, to make the weights witbt out Injury to his healtbAhas returned to the family home at Larchmont Fam. He is undecided as to his futuredoes not know whether .he will take up commercial pursuits .or continue on the turf In the roll of owner and trainer. If It is to be the latter he will have a string ready for the eastern campaign of 1907. Big Crowd at the Downs: Best Racing of the Present Meeting at Louisville is Enjoyed BIG CROWD AT THE DOWNS. BEST RACING OF THE PRESENT MEETING AT LOUISVILLE IS ENJOYED. s Hannibal Bey Wins the Handicap in-a Sharp Driva With Pretension Nicol Beats:tho Barrier with Platoon. . Louisville, Ky., October 13. Seldom have western racegoers been treated to a better day's sport than that which Secretary Lyman Davis provided at Churchill Downs today. The features of a card that drew the greatest attendance of the meeting were the handicap and a condition purse at six furlongs. At the weight allotments the handicap seemed to lie, and really was, an open race. But the form of Pretension has been so good, and his weight carrying ability so well established, that he was installed In the favorite's position, and a short price was accepted about him. A half dozen of the others were backed, the most fancied ones being Goldmate, Hannibal Bey, Mcllvaln and Alma Dnfonr. Many pinned their faith to Hannibal Bey, not on any proposition of high class, but because this game son of Emln Bey, In nearly all of his recent starts, has been hammering right in close around the money. Their surmise was a c6rrect one, as he beat Pretension in a sharp drive. Platoon's handy victory was achieved mainly through jNicpjpyjbwttag ic badt starHe'Ied his competitors in clos'e to record time throughout and got home a half length before Garrett IVUsbn. jockey J. Mcln'tyre was suspended by Starter Dwyer for the remainder of the. meeting for bad behavior at the, post. Nicol also incurred tiie. displeasure of the starter and was suspended: for two days and R. Harris for three days. S. W. Streett claimed Ben Shaw out of the last race yesterday from Rome Respess for $700. Auditor was bid up from $300 to $1,005 by "W. Walker and retained by his owner. J. C. 'S Dropped Knees: English and French Fences Are Decidedly Weaker than Those at Belmont Park THE CAUSE OF JOHN M. P.'S DROPPED KNEES. English and rrenoh Fences Are Decidedly "Weaker Than Those at Bfclinont FafK. Commenting upon the quality of the cross-country horses lately brought into the United States from England, Sports of the Times Bays in its current issue: "The English and French fences of today are weak, and the average English horse is accustomed to rise just so far and 'brush through the rest. Hence the dropped knees of John M. P., which are considered, a fatal defect here, and undoubtedly due to the 'soft' fences over whlch he has been ridden at home. "Not only that, but the English and French fences are not nearly so stout as those at Belmont Park, nor do they average so high. I am told, on the best of authority, that even the famous 'National' course has been so transformed one would scarcely know It. The fences have been cut down by wholesale, the brook dried up to about two-fhlrds of its normal capacity, and everything treated along the same line. That the landings at most of the water jumps are very bad, and that the famed plough Is really a 'manufactured' plough, and not at all what its name would imply, to those who have had experience with the deep 'plough' of Kngland in natural country. "If all this be really so, one can no longer wonder when horses from such a country strike the stiff, well built, five foot 'average' fences of Belmont Park, there is a different story to tell. One which may in a measure explain why a dashing horse like John M. P., or Desert Chief, which have done so well, under weight, up to two miles and over in England, should fence so slovenly especially over water when they come here. "Most of ns, for long years, have felt In out fieafts tfat tiie. English fltesfejha5er, ,wfls par excellence, even 3 ftV BiH'noi We smiled -to our selves when anyone spoke of taking an American horse over to compete in some of the cross-country classics, but, if things are as we are told by absolutely impartial judges, men who know what they see, and when they see it, if things are so, well there is little doubt that Good and Plenty, Land of Clover, or several, before these, would have given an extraordinarily good account of themselves if they had been taken over, good and fit. "Of course this will precipitate the usual storm, in a teacup, from those who imagine the 'National is still the 'National,' and who still imagine that the English chaser of parts brings his knees up sharply, and carries his hocks well under him, at his fences. We have now seen Gate Bell, Sea Horse II., Phil May, Desert Chief, and John M. P., and there is no possible doubt of the superiority of, possibly, ten American horses of the last decade to any of this imported stock, at two miles and a half or over. "We have not a raft of world beaters here, we have few comparatively really good horses in the steeplechase division, but, if the above mentioned imported stock are at all representative of the best there is in England, our best few as they may have been of the past decade" would surely have made them sit up and take notice. At least that is the plain opinion of a man who knows both countries, who lias walked over the 'National course in the old days, also that at Auteil, and who has ridden more cross-country races in his wild and verdant youth than he now cares to remember." Page 5 Jockey Handicapped JOCKEYS HANDICAPPED. Daily Racing Form will publish from time to time a table of the rating of the jockeys, riding on American tracks, based on their performances in the saddle.
