PRICE 5 CENTS Jumpers Fail to Please at Pimlico: Euripides Wins but is Disqualified for Fouling-Hot Finish between Amateur Riders JUMPERS FAIL TO PLEASE AT PIMLICO. Euripides Wins hut Is Disqualified for Fouling Hot Finish Between Amateur Riders. Baltimore, Md., Xovember C. Steepleehaslng in general in the east has not been in any too good favor with the public and, if the sort that -was run here this afternoon is repeated, it will not con-tluue so- in this section where the populace has always been loyal to the "leppers." It was the running of the Pimlico Autumn Steeplechase that not alone amused the regulars, but It made most of the big holiday crowd in attendance feel that the race was not truly run by any means. North-ville was the choice for the event but he came to grief at the fourth jump where he refused, then the race resolved itself between Rathowen, Harry Baylor and Pure Pepper. When coming to the Liverpool while going the second time around Rathowen and Harry Baylor were heads apart with Pure Pepper a furlong behind. Then Houlihan on Rathowen, carried Harry so wide that both of the horses ran clear ot the Liverpool. This let Mr. Page,, on Pure Pepper, go to the front nnd secure a winning advantage. He led the remainder of the way and at the end beat Rathowen ten lengths, while the latter in turn was that many more in front ot Harry Baylor. It was not so very long before the stewards had Houlihan in the stand and he went through the third degree, as did Bowser. No decision was rendered in the case, but one probably will 1 forthcoming. It was excellent racing weather that prevailed and with the track in its best condition it was but natural that a large crowd should be on hand. Nearly six thousand people passed through the gates, and they packed the famous old course, soon destined to become obsolete in turf history. Many of them came over from Washington to witness Mr. Dion Kerr and Mr. George Nicholas, of Baltimore, hook up in the Baltimore Club Cup. It was only to see Mr. Nicholas ride a skillful race and put it on the- rider from the capitol. Mr. Nicholas rode the Chelsea stable's The .Cricket and Mr. Kerr had the mount on Tom Mannix's Bulwark. The latter appeared to be winning in the stretch, but Tie made the mistake jof slipping . away from the rail and Nicholas got through. In the final drive he proved the strongest rider and The Cricket won by a half length. It is said that Jockey Hagan and owner Aste will part. Hagan has not been riding in his best form here and Aste put Lee up on Gold Lady in the. Walden Stakes. The filly needed n strong rider and Aste seemed Justified. Hagan, it is said, be came sulky and Lee had the winning mount on Botanist in the opening race today. Starter Dade made his first actual bad start of the meeting in the second race. The field went away with most ot the horses crossing one another. Euripides was the worst offender. He went from the outside until he nearly strnck the inside fence. On the first turn he crowded Coane on Roly Poly ami the latter went down and narrowly escaped being badly injured. As it was he" hurt his collarbone severely and will probably not ride for awhile. He made a complaint of foul riding to the stewards and after the latter questioned Koerner, Schaller and Bilac they allowed the claim and the 30 to 1 shot Away, was placed first, Donna second, and. Grevilla third. Bobbie Kean proved to be a gold mine to the lwoks in the sixth race. Most of the crowd were out on the day and they attempted to get even by backing trainer Garth's horse. He did not run five furlongs before Avaunteer had him thoroughly beaten. The former Belmont horse Lackey, brke well in the second race, but before he went a hundred yards he bled badly. He was in a forward position at the time and most of the boys behind him got a bath that they did not appreciate, probably. Greatest Attendance in the History of Aqueduct Racing Miller Rides Four Winners and Keene Wins Three Events. New York, November 6. Continuance of the Indian summer brand of weather and a big card of seven races bristling with stake features attracted fully 20,000 racegoers to Aqueduct this afternoon. This was the last really big day of metropolitan racing for the season of 190(5 and the largest crowd in the history of the track was there. The new and commodious Held stand was packed to suffocation. Transportation facilities wero taxed to the utmost. The crowd came early and almost swamped the Long Island railroad trains. The splendid program included three stake fixtures, the Election Day Handicap, Babylon Stakes and the Rushwick Steeplechase Handicap. The old adage that youth will be served even in an equine way was forcibly illustrated by the commanding victory of Philander, the .T. H. Keene juvenile in the big race at a mile and a furlong. The two-year-old Ben Brush gelding vanquished the flower of the older division of the metropolitan stake horses in present training with supreme ease, winning off from the splendid Ally Running Water. "Wizard" Miller rode the ponderous Keene two-year-old Zambesi to victory in the Babylon Stakes at six furlongs and repeated with the same stable's high class Ally Veil in the last, making threo important successes on the day for this owner. The steeplechase proved an easy spot for Expansionist, the added starter. The Brokaw horse was barked for a good thing at 3 to 1. Tlie withdrawal of ihb sprinting star .Lotus "from Uo ilrit rnee disappointed the public. A. winning combination in Miller and Edna .lack-son amply tilled the void however and the lettors nearly backed it off the boards. Baltimore Form Chart BALTIMORE FORM CHART. (PIMLICO.) The record number of starters for the meeting' met in competition this afternoon. The task of picking winners appeared a difficult one and the betting consequently light. Good class horses were also noticeably conspicuous by their absence in the different races. Fine weather, however, made amends for the poor card and a good attendance was on hand. The feature offering was the handicap at six fnrlongs ad it furnished a sharp contest from" barrier rise to finish, Mcadowbreeze under good handling, scoring a lucky-victory over Dr. Leggo. The latter was much the host, is at present in" gornV form-ami with hotter handling would have won -bit by himself. Finishes in most of the races were close, the purses going to other than the best backed hordes. Big coups were attempted in the first two races with Fenian and Mary Orr. Both failed, but their hackers recouped to some extent by the horses finishing in the money. Jockey Ferris wljo was astride Caper in the second race, although a novice, showed considerable skill and outflnished Moreland, who rode Mary Orr, in the final drive. Ferris is under contract to J. B. Res-pess and that owner was enthusiastic after the youngster's fine exhibition of horsemanship. After Hadur's defeat in the last race lie was claimed by M. J. Daly for $1,100. Jockey Seder was lined $50 by the stnrter for disobedience at the post in the last race while astride Athena. There was a sharp mixup soon after the start in the first race and during the jam jockey Foy, astride Maggie Mackey, was crowded against the fence and his foot badly injured. He was forced to cancel the remainder of his engagements. C. K. Brossman, formerly -trainer of Imp, Hoodwink and other good -horses, was among today's visitors. His negotiations for the position of trainer" of "Lucky" Baldwin's horses have fallen through. Some one practicing with a small, caliber rifle sent a biillet crashing through the eye of Ruby Right while she was standing in her stall, completely destroying the sight of the optic. The mare is in foal to Pink Coat. J. B. Respess disposed of Mathew Gault after Ids race fo C. E. Brosius for $200. Wash Norvell is here looking after the stake entries for City Park ' which close November 10. Trainer W. E. Phillips, of the Cook stable, has te-quested that ten stalls be reserved for him at City Park. Henry Simons returned today from his campaign at Atlanta and other southern towns. He claims to have done fairly well, winning a number of races with his horses. J. B. Dunn shipped his horses today to California. The investigation into the charges that he and Fischer brougbt against Steve L'Hommedleu is still on and a decision in the case will likely be handed down within the next few days. - L'Hommedleu Is at present in French Lick and Fischer ou a visit to his parents in Memphis, Tenn. Bennings Prospects Favorable BENNINGS PROSPECTS FAVORABLE. The outlook is most promising for a fine meeting at the Bennings track, which opens November 16. A large number of thoroughbreds, more than ever in the history of racing in Washington, will be on hand to compete for the purses. The close proximity of the race meeting .at , the old Pimlico track, near Baltimore, has attracted many horses to the south, and many of these will take part in the Bennings meeting. Many more high class horses would undoubtedly go to Washington this fall than are' at present scheduled if the management was more liberal in regard to the amount of money added to the owners' sweepstakes. The Bennings track pays big dividends, to its stockholders and could well afford to give larger purses and increase its stake list. Perhaps this may all come about when the new Baltimore track is ready for action. Great Sale in Prospect GREAT SALE IN PROSPECT. The sale of thoroughbreds to be conducted by the Faslg-Tipton Company at Lexington, Ky., beginning Monday, November 26, is an affair of extraordinary importance and sure to attract a big attendance of buyers from all over the country. The fact that it includes dispersal sales of the splendid stallions and broodmares collected by the late Captain Samuel S. Brown at Senorlta Stud, the late Charles F. Mc-' i Meekin at Oakwood Stud and by Mr. R. H. Anderson at Tea's Over Stud, would alone suffice to maksi the sale memorable. Attention is called to the advertisement of the sale in this issue. y Trainer Duke at Home TRAINER DUKE AT HOME. New York, November C. William Duke, trainer for W. K. Vanderbllt, arrived here Sunday morning on the steamer St. Paul from Southampton. He has had entire charge of Mr. Vanderbilt's French stable and has leen responsible for placing the American millionaire at the head of winning owners in France. Maintonon, which won the Autumn Grand Prix lor Mr. Vanderbllt and who came near making a French record, with a total winning ot $16S,240, was handled by Duke. Aqueduct Now a Well Equipped Track: Growth and Improvements That Have Made it Second Only to Belmont Park AQUEDUCT, NOW A WELL EQUIPPED TRACK. Growth and Improvements That Havo Mado It Second Only to Belmont Park, New Yorkv November G. From what was the cheapest kind of a merry-go-round a few years ago, the 'Aqueduct track has been gradually develoiied into a high-class race course, which, after a few more Improvements have been made under the direction of Phillip J. Dwyer, will take rank with the Jockey Club's famous establishments at Shcepshcad Bay, Brighton, Jamaica and Belmont Park. The Aqueduct track itself is one of the best from a racing point of view in the country. Barring Belmont Park, it has the longest homestretch on the circuit, which, according to horsemen, is a beneficial factor in the establishment of public form. Widened a bit on the turns and in the homestretch the track would be an ideal one. As it is horsemen have become so enthusiastic over it that they have patronized the stakes Hlterally, with the result that many of the best horses in training- will not Ihj retired- until the present meeting of the Queens County' Jockey Club comes to an end. The building of a new 00,000 Held stand at Aqueduct -is significant. It means to all intents and purposes that the Brooklyn Jockey Club, which has operated the Gravesend track for many years and of which Mr. Dwyer is the leading spirit; Intends to make its permanent home In the course of time at Aqueduct. Two years ago Mr. Dwyer, realizing that the encroachments of the real estate people meant that Gravesend was doomed, began to look around for a new home. Several Kites oil Long Island were picked out, but before a definite selection coiild be made Mr. Dwyer stumbled upon a block of stock that gave him con-Irol of Aqueduct. With this track as an anchor to windward Mr. Dwyer continued his search for a new plant, and finally found-what be wanted in a tract of land within a short distance of Garden City, in Nassau county, not far from Belmont Park. 15ut before this arrangement could take definite shape '-special legislation at Albany shut him out of the property as far as turning it into a racetrack was concerned. Then it was that Mr. Dwyer decided to go ahead with improvements at Aqueduct. There had never been a "field" at that track, and with the conclusion of the Jamaica meeting each year the one dollar patrons generally retired for the season rather 'than pay the three dollar tariff which prevailed exclusively at the new Dwyer track. But Mr. Dwyer, always believing in the loyal support of the masses, lost no time in providing them with splendid accommodations, which, judging from the patronage of Saturday, .will )e highly appreciated. With a flue steel structure and a roomy betting enclosure, therefore, Aqueduct cannot remain stationary In the way of improvements. The old wooden grandstand and clubhouse are sure to be supplanted with spacious buildings of modern type, while many other accommodations for racegoers Avi.ll be instituted.
