NO. 267. CHICAGO, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 1906. PRICE 5 CENTS Minnie Adams Falls Lame: Cook's Double Derby Winner Takes the Feature Race at Latonia MINNIE ADAMS FALLS LAME. COOK'S DOUBLE DERBY WINNER TAKES THE FEATURE RACE AT LATONIA. Joe Coyne's Running Evokes Judicial Action-Favorites and Outsiders Break Even Henry WatteTson in Form. Cincinnati, 0., November 7. Minnie Adams, at & short price, won the feature race, but onlyafter a hard struggle to wear down the leaders In the early stages. Her seeming lack of speed during the first half caused a belief that her defeat was imminent, and wailing expressions from those who had backed her were heard in many quarters. Nicol, who rode her, however, using good judgment, sent her along sharply after rounding the stretch turn and wore down the leaders In the final drive, winning comfortably. Her failure to display more speed during the ' race, and the close victory she achieved was explainable by the fact that she pulled up very lame. Joe Coyne's failure to show good form and Telegrapher's good race were the surprises of the race. The latter was a 100 to 1 shot, and managed to get up in time to beat out Old Stone, coupled in the betting with Mortlboy as the Goldblatt entry, in the last stride for second 'place. Judge Price was dissatisfied with the running of Joe Coyne and had C. C. McCafferty before him to explain. The latter attributed the horse's poor showing to the fact that he sulked. Judge Price rtold the -owner that in future all ther horses from his stable would have to show more consistency If he wanted to race at this track. Favorites and outsiders split the card during the afternoon, Minnie Adams, Belden and Henry Watter-son, the latter recently acquired by James Arthur, being the choices that were successful while Gold-proof, Tsara and The Golden Bird came to the rescue of the bookmakers. Large fields were again in evidence, excepting In the third race and crowding was again in vogue. Intaglis came to grief by falling In the second race, however, his rider, F. Burton sustained no Injury by his tumble. Judge Price announced today that Messrs. Grainger and Winn, who composed the investigation committee with Price to look into the Flscher-Dunn-L'Hommedieu case will arrive here tomorrow, whea a decision in the case will be handed down. Malvina, carded as a starter In the fifth race, was ordered withdrawn by the judges for lack of identification. Starter Holtman, unaware that the horse had been scratched, kept the field at the post until one of his assistants, who he sent over to locate the horse, was made acquainted with the fact that the filly had been withdrawn. Further depletion of bank rolls among the bookmakers forced a pair of the layers to withdraw from the ranks. George Hendrie, principal owner of the tracks that comprise the Highland Park circuit, was among the visitors. Windshield, which finished third, was recently purchased at auction for $50 by John Ferriss, Jr. An offer of $500 for him was refused. Jockey T. Taylor was fined $25 by the starter for disobedience at the post Jockey F. Burton was fined $25 by the judges for foul riding In attempting to carry Windshield wide in the fourth race. Joe Young has purchased at private terms from E. Fitzgerald, Uncle Henry, which he will race this winter at New Orleans. Most of the horses comprising the string of Fred Cook have gone amiss. Tom Dolan and Missouri Lad, both which were worked last night pulled up lame, and now Minnie Adams will have to be shelved for some time to enable her to recover from the lameness that she sustained today. Aqueduct Favorites Win: All but One Reward Backers and the Exception Breaks a Track Record AQUEDUCT FAYORITES WIN. ALL BUT ONE REWARD BACKERS AND THE EXCEPTION BREAKS A TRACK RECORD., Jacobite Easily Best in the Woodmere Stakes Dr., Dix Falls and Injures Jockey Hennessy Miller Takes But Two. New York, November 7. Exquisite weather, high class racing and undiminished attendance are the present prevailing conditions at Aqueduct. The only stake fixture was the Woodmere, a selling affair at seven furlongs. E. R. Thomas' three-year-old Golden Garter gelding, Jacobite, masquerading as a selling plater was opposed by the bonafide article and, consequently won the race with ridiculous ease. Sewell, who rode him never once looked ahead to see where he was going after making the turn into the stretch, but for over three furlongs of the closing stage of the journey kept locking back and "kidding" the other riders unmercifully. Five favorites, four of them at odds on, were successful during the afternoon. Miller took the last two races after suffering four straight defeats, one of them being on Sally Preston at 7 to 10. This one failure discouraged many Intending bettors from taking any chances on Aster d'Or and Suffrage at the meagre odds quoted about them. W. K. Thomas and C. Pfizer, two prominent European turfmen who employ American trainers on the other side. Xash Turner and J. C. Campbell, respectively, were visitors at Aqueduct this afternoon. - A bad looking accident occurred In the fifth race. The horse Dr. Dix, a -well backed, good thing, after traversing a furlong jumped on horses in front of him and fell Injuring himself so badly that he had to bo destroyed. Jockey Hennessy, -who was knocked senseless from the fall, revived shortly afterwards and escaped with only a severe shaking up. It was thought at first the light weight rider was killed and the spectators were greatly excited until' assured to the contrary. Supreme was seriously cut-down at the time of the accident and was at once pulled up. The poolroom men seem to have the best of It in their struggle with the Plnkertons at the track. They built their steel tower until it was seventy-five feet high. There was no further attempt to screen off the view with canvas sails, but the heliograph was working all the afternoon with no apparent effect. Tennessee Horsemen Elated TENNESSEE HORSEMEN ELATED. Memphis, Tenn., November 7. Returns from yesterday's election showing that General M. R. Patterson. Democratic candidate, will be next Governor of Tennessee, caused jollification among turfmen at Montgomery Park and throughout the state today, as General Patterson was looked on as not being an enemy of the sport which has been conducted in this state for many years. With the next legislature in accord with the governor-elect, horsemen pretend to see the last of a bitter fight which has waged in this state for three years, in which the so-called reform following at one time threatened to annihilate all forms of horse racing. It Is said on good authority that without fear of hostile legislation to racing O. K. G. Billings and a following will again resurrect the harness racing which was noteworthy here, for many pacing and trotting records were made at the famous "Two-minute" track. Humo to Race at New Orleans HUMO TO RACE AT NEW ORLEANS. New York, November 7. W. H. Snyder will take the good horse Humo to New Orleans for the winter meeting. Humo has not raced since last year, but appears to be in good condition, now and Mr. Snyder will enter him for the Crescent City and City Park stakes. Humo at his best would be a valuable acquisition to the racing material at the southern tracks. Southern Cross, which was. one of the best sprinters at the Fair Grounds last season and took second money in the Carter Handicap, Is going along well again and will bear the Snyder colors again during the winter. Kirkfield Stable's Youngsters KIRKFIELD STABLE'S YOUNGSTERS. Although a dozen of the Klrkfield Stable horses have been sent to California, a big band of yearlings remain at home to be educated and watched over by trainer Wliyte, while preparing for next year's campaign. The contingent now at .the Woodbine track consists of War Whoop, Wickllght and Kirk-field, and the two-year-old fillies Scotch Pebble and -Scarlet, in addition to the following yearlings: Saskatoon, ch. c, by St. Simonian Agnes. Sherrlng. b. c, by Griffon Pertinent. Chestnut colt, by Mazagan Eurle. Bay colt, by Bridgewater Little Mary. Chestnut colt, by St Simonian Florry Myers. Bay colt, by St Simonian Westmeath. Wire In and several home-bred yearlings are already -at Klrkfield, Some Exciting Finishes at Pimlico Track: Weirdsome, Doo Kyle and Hooray Get Home First by Noses-Koerner Comes West SOME EXCITING FINISHES AT PIMLICO TRACK. Weirdsome, Doc Kyle and Hooray Get Home First by Noses Koerner Comes West. ' Baltimore, Md., November 7. This was the sixth day of the fall meeting here and the interest among the people seems unabated. This ia probably due to the fact that a majority of the favorites and the well backed horses have won. As a result the public have had much the best of it and slowly but surely they have cut down the number of books. Originally thirty of the layers were on, but this afternoon there was a falling off and only twenty-three were in line when booking time came. The fact that it was the day after the election affected the attendance some, .but not enough to be plainly noticeable. Probably nearly 4,000 were on hand when the second race was called. The features were the Country Club Selling Stakes and the Elk-ridge Hunt Club Steeplechase for qualified hunters. Both races were run over tracks that were faster than they have been before during this meeting. In the Country Club, Weirdsome came very near equalling the track record held by Bobble Kean made last fall. He ran a mile: and a sixteenth in 1:481, just a quarter of a second behlnd'the mark. Weirdsome was ridden by Hagan and that lad put up one of the best finishes of his career. He waited with his mount until in the final furlong, then came with a rush and caught. Anneta Lady in the last stride, getting the decision on the nod. The latters race was an excellent one, put making the pace told on her. The finish for the Country Club was not any better than, those in the first two races of the day, spirited contests . landing Doc Kyle a winner by a nose from Meddlesome Boy and in the. second Hagan getting Hooray home a nose in front of Belle Strome. Despite the fact that Houlihan rode one of the rawest races seen in some timei in the Pimlico steeplechase, Tuesday, it is more than likely that he will escape much easier than the general run of observers thought. The policy of the Jockey Club in covering up scandal seem to have permeated the ranks of the National Steeplechase and Hunt authorities. The race will probably be passed up. It seems that the matter was simply an effort of Houlihan to bumpi the negro rider Bowser. Both riders were roughing It and before they realized it both were clear of the Liverpool and out of the course. This appears to be the opinion which the stewards entertain. Jockey Koerner, who has been riding for Al Weston here, and who promised to be the star rider of the meeting, leaves tonight for Latonla. He is under contract to W. O. Joplln and the latter wired the lad that he had five mounts for "him Saturday. He will not be a loss . to the meeting for there is plenty of good riding material here, considering that most of the fields are confined to twelve horses. , Jockey Bllac will' remain on the ground for the remainder of the meeting. Today when he came to weigh In for the' opening race, he was Informed that the stewards had suspended him for that time for the ride on Euripides, when that horse was disqualified. John Pangle sold his filly Sea Water to John Munday. Jockey Coane will be unable to ride for some time to come. It developed that his arm was broken In two places when he fell from Roly Poly. Radtke Still in Difficulty RADTKE STILL IN DIFFICULTY. There seems to be considerable doubt as to Radtke's status, when his Jamaica suspension came to an end it was assumed that he was at liberty to take mounts, but it seems that such is not the case. Concerning his case the New York World says: "Herman Radtke will not ride again in the east this fall. His term, of suspension by the stewards o the Jamaica race track caused the young rider to go west in order to have a vacation before the winter season on the Pacific coast begins on Thanksgiving Day. His suspension practically remains in force, although the stewards of the Jamaica track have no jurisdiction over the present meeting at the Aqueduct course. If the Jamaica officials had merely suspended Radtke and not referred, his case to the Jockey Club for further consideration his punishment would have ended with the last race at "Big Tim" Sullivan's track. But the recommendation for a final decision of the jockey's case served to keej) this suspension alive, and unless the Jockey Club takes some action he stands debarred from riding. "The consistent form of Tommy Waddell since Radtke rode him and the horse's game struggle under the whip tend to refute the claims of the jockey's friends that Radtke did not hit the horse because he had been warned that to do so would cause him to sulk. No horse ever stood punishment in better style or showed more courage than Tommy Waddell when he defeated Tileing. The latter seemingly had the race in hand a furlong from home, while Tommy Waddell Was apparently beaten and had to make up four lengths on his opponent. This he did under the potent influence of Sewell's whip, and passing the winning post he was a half length in front "It is probable, from all that can be learned regarding the action of the Jpckey Club stewards, that the turf authorities will keep the jockey cn the ground for the remainder of the year, but that they will renew his license on application in the spring. Radtke had borne such an excellent reputation for honesty up to the time of his suspension that most turfmen think that in the face of no direct evidence eonecting him with fraud the continuation of the present punishment for Ms poor ride on Tommy Waddell is sufficient. During this period, horsemen declare, Radtke would have time to reflect on many of his past actions and that it would serve to cure him of a bad temper, which is his most . grievous fault." The Vanderbilt Horses in France THE VANDERBILT HORSES IN FRANCE. The return of William Duke on a visit brings freshly .to mibd the great success he achieved" iu France this year with the Vanderbllt horses. It also suggests that it is a matter of real regret that Mr. Vanderbilt's splendid establishment is not located in the country of his birth instead of a foreign land. Could his powerful stable be landed intact in New York to take part In next year's racing in the east it would add an element of extraordinary Interest to the American turf. For Mr. Vanderbllt this year Prestige won the Prix de St Cloud, the Eugene Adam Stakes, the Prix du Prince de Galles, the Yictor Stakes and the Seymour Stakes. Maintenon won, the Hocquart Stakes, the Lupin Stakes, the French Derby, the Prize of the President of the Republic, the Long-champs Stakes, the Grand Prix de Deauville and the Prix de Consell Municipal; Terburg, the Blangy Stakes, the Prix de Ville d'Avray, the Observatolre Stakes and the Vieuxpont Stakes; Malta, the Coeur-volant Stakes and the Prix Arc de Triomphe; Luin-Ineuse, the Prix Chamln de Fer; Maroc, the Prix Gulliver; Pimlico, the Prix de la Ville; Aracia, the Prix Conseil-General, and Madge, the Yacowlef Stakes. Trainer Duke has presided over the Vanderbllt tralnng quarters about five years. His first venture abroad was as a horse owner of his own account in England and France, but he gave tills up, and within a year from the time he took hold of the Vanderbllt horses he made the stable a leader in France. The Vanderbllt stud is at the Haras de Vlllebon, about twelve miles from Paris, and the training ground is at St. Louis de Possy, twenty-two miles from Paris and about six miles from the great race course of Maisons Laffitte. At the training ground are two tracks in a private inclosure, one a prepared earth course on the style of those In this country, and the other a turf course a mile and a quarter In circumference. The stables are of the most modern structure and there Is every comfort and convenience for the horses and their attendants. Racing in France Is vastly different from the sport as it is conducted here, and though the big prizes there attract about the best horses In the world the running of two-year-olds is so restricted that horses of that age lo not get a chance until August, and then they compete for prizes that are not big enough to tempt the cupidity of owners. With the restriction on the youngsters selling events for older horses have an Important part In French racing, and the greatest turfmen in France patronize them. Horses of an extremely high class run in the selling races, and the Vanderbllt stable has lost several through their being claimed. Canadian Stables for California Racing: The Kirkfield Stable and J. J. Walsh Send Big Strings to Take Part in Coast Events CANADIAN STABLES FOR CALIFORNIA RACING. The Klrkfield Stable and J. J. Walsh Send Bi Strings to Take Fart in Coast Events. Toronto, Ont., November 7. Toronto owners will be pretty well represented in the racing at Los Angeles this winter. The Klrkfield stable shipped twelve head for the City of the Angels on Saturday, and Mr. J. J. Walsh of this city sent on twenty-two last week from New York. The Kirkfield lot went" in charge of J. J. O'Flaherty, who will race them during the winter. They were Charle3 El-wood, Mortlake, Cicely, Judge Nelson, Kamsack. Kirkfield Belle and Lord Rosslngton, besides the following yearlings: Chestnut filly, by Bridgewater Dingle. Bay filly, by Faverdale Southwlnd. Bay filly, by Griffon Miss Rye. Bay filly, by Dr. MacBride Rathleen. Bay filly, by St. Dory The Heroine. The first three youngsters have all shown quarters as good as 231 seconds. It is expected that most of the California lot will be disposed of, and only a few will be seen here again. The other Klrkfield horses, about twenty, will winter at Klrkfield. Mr. J. J. Walsh is the other Torontonian who sends a big string to Los. Angeles. His horses are trained by John R. Walker, who was for so long with Mr. Seagram. Almost all of his charges are yearlings, Mr. Walsh having bought nineteen youngsters at the various sales ' this summer. Following the California season the stable will be shipped direct to Toronto to await the opening of racing at Woodbine, and three or four head that have been left in New York will join them here. Johnny Walker is a very capable trainer, and with all this material, at his command it cannot be doubted that he will cut considerable figure in next year's Woodbine results. Mr. Walsh is just now in town preparing for the winter in California. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Jack Rowe's good filly Cora Price will be raced at New Orleans next winter. Harry Kuhl secured entries right and left at Aqueduct for the City Park Stakes, and counts on a total of nominations far in excess of last winter. Waterbury will be well engaged in Ascot Park Stakes, and being a fast and Improving young horse, Is likely to be one of the stars of the coming meeting. Jockey Ranch, who was expected to return to this country with Mr. Vanderbilt's trainer William Duke, remained some time in viewing the wonders of London before sailing for his native land. Surveillance had worked a haU ji 47 with 123 pounds up two days prior to the race in which Sally Preston defeated her at Aqueduct Monday, which accounts for the heavy backing awarded the filly ' that day, , . . Coney Island Stakes to Close CONEY ISLAND STAKES TO CLOSE. Elsewhere in this Issue the Coney Island Jockey Club advertises a list of stakes bound to enlist the attention and patronage of all owners of horses good enough to compete for stake honors. Entries will close November 15, so no great space of time remains for consideration of conditions before making, nominations. The list embraces a number of the most valuable and famous events of the American turf. Including the Lawrence Realization, Annual Champion, Tidal and Great Filly Stakes. Western owners of good horses have scanty chances of winning anything more than cheap purses in their own section and perforce must look to the east. To all such the Coney Island Jockey Club tenders an Invitation to engage their horses in the rich events now offered . and they should not be slow in accepting; Maher's Remarkable Achievements MAKER'S REMARKABLE ACHIEVEMENTS. It is already evident that all the winter tracks will have fully as many, if not more, horses than they can provide with stall room and all around the outlook is for excellent racing at- New Orleans, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Climatic conslder-actlons induce many owners to view the latter city favorably and, unless some who have been put down as Intending to .-make their winter ' quarters at Ascot Park change their purpose, the racing there will be superior to that of past seasons. Concerning horsemen expected at Ascot the Los Angeles Evening News of a recent date said: . - ' ' "Although the 'opening of Ascot- is nearly one month in the future a sufficient number of the leading horsemen of the country have applied for stable room to guarantee the success of the winter meeting at the county course, and the only source of "worry to Manager Brooks at this time Is to find stable room for the belated applicants. Several of. the large eastern stables have delayed their applications uiitJl-jUl "gtable rmls' exhausted, and aCtlVc preparations forb"uilding stables 'ate-''Mow in progress. , ' "Every train from the east is bringing horses to Los Angeles and before the end of the. week it is probable that there will be more than OOOiiorses,; stabled at the track. Manager Brooks has received'" several letters and telegrams from prominent New-York horsemen asking for stable room, and added quarters have become ,a necessity that the desirable class of horsemen who have delayed making appli cation may be taken care .of. "George J. Long, proprietor of Bashford Manor, near Louisville, and owner of Sir Huon, one 'of "'the biggest stake winners of the' metropolitan "leason, . unloaded fourteen horses at Ascot this morning. Sir Iluon is not one of the n'umber"v-"but' 'several high-class performers, are included 'in the shipment.' "Frank .Regan is expected, to arrive tomorrow with his stable and that of J. L. Holland, for whom lie trains. In this shipment are Confessor, Master-' son,' Kilter--and Oarsman. The ' shipment includes ten horses. " "Alex Shields, the greatest trainer of the. day' and partner of E. R. Thomas in the ownership of Goi Between, winner of "the 'Suburban and other big-stakes at New York, and Halifax, which is believed; to be one of the few sprinters able to givevRoseberi.j an argument, will bring sixteen horses to Ascot for tHe winter campaign. .... Go . Between . arid" .... 'Halifax ' will be among the number. "C. Bowman, bookmaker and-horseman, also will ship a large s'tring of high-class horses at once. The Bowman string is under the management of Phil' Chinn, brother of Kit Chinn, and includes Pretension, Tanager and Golden Pheasant, all winners on; the eastern circuit. ,-.;; "J. F. Newman has asked for accommodations! for sixteen horses, Including Don Domo, and wlllj ship immediately from his Texas ranch. He has; had a prosperous season in the east arid will" bring several good horses Jn addition to the string 'he raced at Ascot last sensori.' "J. J. Walsh and his string of twenty-nine horses are expected to arrive this afternoon, as Manager ' Brooks had a telegram from him, sent from La Junta, . Colo. notifying him that he expected to arrive today. In Ills shipment are several good performers and he has liberally patronized the several ! '" 1 stakes. . "W. T. Anderson has a large string already stabled at Ascot having- arrived- several days' ago. ' In his stable' are several ''ifep" ones, but his last! season's crack, Fustian, probably is yet the best: horse of his lot. Anderson -was' one of the leading' winners on-'the Canadian-'circuit during tlie suram'eV' ' ! ' " 1 : season. . '!J. A. Bennet notified Manager Brooks this' morning that he would ship twelve horses to Ascot ; Thursday, and would follow ten days later. Bennet owns -many good-ones, but Flip Flap "prfcbably is his best performer. ',, "Frank Kelly, who lias been .threatening to race: at Ascot for two or three years, finally gratified' racegoers and the management by asking for" stable ' room for his cracks, .which" include Jetsam, Duicinea, Kitty II. and two two-year-olds by Knight of tlie Thistle. 1 "R.' S. Davidson will be among the new faces at Ascot next season. He lias' a large stable, headed by Euripides, a winner in the east. "Barney Schreiber will start his horses for the coast Thursday and the" Ascot -division should "arrive . by Monday. "Butch" Covington will be in charge of the division to be raced at the county track." England's Good Two-Year-Olds ENGLAND'S GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLDS. "Just as, no Sysonby lias turned up among the three-year-olds in America this year, so in England, despite Spearmint's Grand Prix victory, the run of klts and fillies of that age has not been phenomenal. On the contrary the year has been more noteworthy for vagaries than consistencies," says "Pop" in the Toronto .Sunday World. "Spearmint went wrong, or rather suffered injury after his French triumph. Sir Daniel :Coopcr's Flair early went to pieces. Lord Derby's Oaks winner, Keystone II., has proved of inoderate calibre. tThe st. Leger winner, Troutbeck, does not appear to be much more than a good, honest, consistent performer, but of ho startling merit Tlie Two Thousand Guinea winner, Gorgos, early proved little better than a spasm, and, in fact, all down the line the season has been marked by a total- absence of stars. As regards two-year-olds, the situation is very different. In tlie front ranks across tlie water some real cracks have been developed in Traqtiair, Slieve Gallion, GalvanI arid Polar Star, each of which in turn has held the palm. Unhappily, and I say 'unhappily' because in the circumstances it is a real misfortune, the last-riamed, a chestnut colt owned and bred by Colonel Hall Walker, who is running Major Eustace Loder very close as an owner of high-class horses,iy Pioneer (son of Galopin" and Moorhen, dam of Gallinule, sire of Pretty Polly) out of Go On, a mare that was sold five years ago as a six-year-old for ninety quineas, by Isosceles Springthorn, has no classic engagements next year, although he was given two dozen engegements for the present year. "Polar Star has won no fewer than twelve races off the reel, and retires into winter quarters with an unbeaten record, his last performance being in the Criterion Stakes at the Houghton meeting at Newmarket, when he beat Major Eustace Loder's GalvanI, both carrying 130 pounds, the Duke of Westminster'; Dutsy .Miller and Leopold de Rothschild's Sequin. An English correspondent speaks of Polar Star, whose sire, , Pioneer, was seventeen when he got' him out of a $450 niare, and Was standing at twenty guineas, having never previously distinguished himself, as being rather straight in his hocks, but possessing a fine burst of speed and. gnuid sjamlga,' In tue Orerlon, ' jumping off at ' t-. .i. . . ' ... . :-. ; - once,' 'lieheld Galvanb at bay all the way, winning' in decisive style by a couple of lengths.. Dusty Miller, which finished third, Is a good-looking colt, but it is feared that he is only moderate. He is own-brother to "Rydal Head, and perhaps lie may improve next year. The performance of Polar Star was in every sense a brilliant one, and whilst Colonel Hall Walker was naturally delighted, the greatest praise is due to Ills trainer, W. T. Robins-son, who, ever since the colt was a yearling, has implicitly believed that he would prove ' to be a horse far above the average in capacity. His judgment has been fully justified by results, and possibly If Robinson's opinion of the colt" were published to the world, few1 would be found credulous enough to agree 'with' liini. Anyhow, :Polar Star retires Into winter quarters absolutely unbeaten! He certainly docs not possess the' length and scope of GalvanI, -jwid while disclaiming any wish to depreciate his. 'unbeaten merits, 1 shall be surprised If Major Loder's colt does nbt prove to be the better three-year-old.' Robinson; the trainer, won on the same day wjtli Mimosa, a two-year-old by Santol, and with James, a three-year-old by Oriflamb." "Little Joe" Notter's Rise "LITTLE JOE" NOTTER'S BISE. Its a far cry from a little stable lad at .$13 a : month to a jockey commanding a salary of ?S,000 a year, but Joe Notter, a Brooklyn lad sixteen years ' old, has spanned ' this gulf Inside of " Tour months and today owns a fine home in one of the: best residential sections of Kings County, says the New ; York World. ; ' "Little Joe" weighs less than ninety -five pounds. He is a chubby lad, with short legs that scarcely reach below the flaps of his saddle. His face is-a Veritable looking-glass "of mirth." Ilii eyes fairly dance a metis twinkle' at 'all' times,. Ills lips1 are parted in a grin of delight and his freckles are bsually puckered up yito wrinkles caused by his: .. . good nature;:, : ! The only time that Notter is not laughing, and playing pranks is when he is on the back of a race-mad thoroughbred. Tlicri lie throws to tlie : winds liis frlyqlity and becomes as steady as the: 'swing of a clock's pendulum. He listens attentively 'to the riding" Instructions of the- turfmen who employ him and forgets all else in his desire to pilot ills mount home a winner. T Little Notter's skill in the saddle Is the product, of long tuition by his employer, Jack McGinriis. He is considered by many horsemen the ' lad who is destined to play the' part next year of Walter Miller's greatest rival for- the honors of the saddle. Wowly but steadily he caine into the limelight of jturf publicity by riding winners at long odds. His frequent success with horses that were at big prices' soon earned for him the racetrack title of "the long-shot jockey."- He rode many more of these, kind of horses to victory than Miller, and his employer, who backs his mounts religiously is $10,000 winner Qnjjtlie season. '. Notter ' will continue in McGInnis's '.employ for another year. The latter signed him three years ago. to ride his horses until 190S. After the contract; "ends the boy will "probably sign to ride the horses belonging to a rich owner. He will be able to do light weight, 100 pounds, for several years. This Is. a valuable asset to a jockey with skill and will euable .him to command a. high salary. r Important Canadian Betting Decision " IMPORTANT CANADIAN" "BETTING" DECISION. j"jf ""r "" V v At Toronto three out of live judges of the Court of Appeals have upheld the conviction against J. S. Saunders and others for conducting gaming houses at the Woodbine raqetrack. These three judges have expressed their opinion that betting booths such as have existed at the Woodbine fell within the terms of the section of the criminal code prohibiting gaming houses. In effect the decision is that in future there can be no betting in booths at any racetrack in this country, though no restraint has actually been placed' on the act of betting itself. Mr;' Justice; Garrow, one of the two' dissenting judges, expressed the opinion that tlie object of-the legislature had apparently been to reserve race courses of incorporated associations as places where betting might take place without the' participants being subject to any penalty. On this account he thought any move to eliminate such betting had better lie made through the legislature. Chief Justice Meredith thought that the'epnviction should be quashed because the defendants were riot the keepers of disorderly houses in the facts as related. The decision will doubtless be taken' to the Supreme Court. Concerning the decision the Toronto Globe of -Monday says: "Now that a majority of the Court of Appeals has decided that tlie methods of bookinaking ! in' vogue throughout Canada are not legal, the bookmaker will have Jo change his methods or .go out of business. He will probably adopt the former alternative, unless there is an appeal, which will, ; no doubt, be taken, as the court was divided in the opinion given on Saturday. The question of the legality of betting on race courses was not before the court. As Mr. Justice Garrow remarked In his opinion,1 the trend bf legislative movement is all in favor of that. He probably had in mind the bills now in the British Parliament and the legislatures of Victoria and New South Wales, providing for the suppression of street 'and shop betting. In all of them race courses are exempted, arid Mr. Herbert Gladstone, the' British Home Secretary, has stated that is the policy of the "" n bill in England." 1 - ( - Phillips Ships to City Park PHILLIPS SHIPS TO CITY PARK. Jack Phillips has shipped ids string of fourteen horses to City Park. Phillips-has been greatly disappointed in Jack Dolan, but believes the horse will come back to his form at New Orleans. He hopes to have Farrell, the midget rider, who was put under the ban on the northern circut, restored to good standing and predicts that the lad will make good in a' big way. Entries to be addressed to the CLERK OF II IE COIJRSK. jm cw island mm club, 571 FIFTH AVENUE, NEW YORK CITY. Winter Track Politics WINTER TRACK POLITICS. "Naturally the California tracks have made inroads on New Orleans. Hundreds of horses and scores of turfmen, billed for the Crescent City a month ago, are nOw heading toward the Golden Gale," says a New York letter to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. "On the turf, as well as in commercial lines, old-time conservatism does not pay these days. . Perhaps the most striking coup brought off was the luring away of Sam Hiidretli and his big stable from the Louisiana winter field to San Francisco, Cal. It took three weeks of talking" in the paddock by day and about the Imperial Hotel corridors at night on the part of an agent before Sam finally broke away from the Fair Grounds, where he has been racing and spending 50,000 eacli winter, to the far west. Hildreth has already shipped to Oakland' thirty-one head with Guiding Star, winner of the last Crescent City Derby; Security, Rapid Water and old Van Ness, all New Orleans favorites, in the Hildreth special palace horse cars. Jockey Knapp will ride for him. Getting Hildreth to San Francisco was quite a thing, when you consider that his presence in any town during three mouths of racing means a turnover among the city's merchants, theaters and hotels of almost $100,000. "Hildreth has always an entourage of big bettors and a staff of twenty highly paid employes. As' soon as "Boots" Durnell's reinstatement was announced, Williams and Scanlan nailed him for Oakland, too. It Is supposed Durnell has the financial support of John W. Gates. He will take twelve useful horses west late this "Week, with Arthur Redfern as his jockey, the latter agreeing to make 105 pounds for Durnell by December 15. These two big stables might have gone south instead of west with a little timely persuasion. Los Angeles is liable to steal Alex Shields from the Fair Grounds, too. However, New Orleans is in for one grand winter of racing and all-round sport. Mr. Nathanson says every stall at the Fair Grounds has been let. while he expects about thirty bookmakers to declare in on Thanksgiving Day." Jockeys Handicapped JOCKEYS HANDICAPPED. Dally Racing Form will publish from time to time a table of the rating of the- jockeys riding on American tracks, based on their performances in the saddle. The best riders will be given the, uniform rating of 100, and from that point the others will be graded down according to their estimated relative skill. For a difference of five points between the Jockeys, three points change in the handicap figures assigned the horses in any race must be made. Only riders frequently in the saddle will be given a place in the tables. The following is the present rating: Allen, S .75 Kinney 75 Allen, W 85 Koerner 90 Alex, II SO Knaack 75 Andress. English Turfmen Grumble at Starting ENGLISH TURFMEN GRUMBLE AT STARTING. Over in England they are still debating the "starting problem" at a furious rate. We had enough of it here following the introduction of the Australian starting device, but in the main followers of the turf in this country have lost sight of the matter. In the home of the thoroughbred it is different, as witness the following from a recent edition of London Sporting Life: "In the last issue of the 'Racing Calendar' I noticed the simple announcement that A meeting of the Jockey Club will be held at Newmarket in the Houghton Week. I wonder whether any member of the club will have the courage to initiate a discussion on the question of the starting gate, with :i view to bringing about some alteration of the present unsatisfactory system. That owners are dis satisfied anyone who goes racing continually ia aware, but somehow or other owners seem chary of making any move in the matter, and until the subject Is brought before the stewards of the Jockey Club there seems little chance af any amelioration of a system which has ruined more horses for racing purposes in the last few years than bard ground, while the number that get kicked, left at the post, or whip round Increases daily. Surely a trial could be given to some other method of starting. Again and again I have suggested a trial of a walk-up start, and owners have also expressed a wish for such a trial. Frequently ws see a walk-up start, but then it is only allowed to one or perhaps two in a field of horses, and as a rule it Is the unruly horses who get the benefit of this as, for instance, in the case of St. Luke at the last meeting at Newmarket. Occasionally we even see a horse canter up, as in the case of Troutbeck in the start for the St. Lcger at Doncaster.
