NO. 269. CHICAGO, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 1906. PRICE 5 CENTS Athlete Mends His Ways: Runs True and Defeats High Class Opponents for the Roslyn Handicap ATHLETE MENDS HIS WAYS. RUNS TRUE AND DEFEATS HIGH CLASS OPPONENTS FOR THE ROSLYN HANDICAP. Dreamer Spoils a Coup Sewell Injured by His Mount Falling Jockey Shaw May Ride in Germany After All. New York, November 9. Today's card was more than ordinarily attractive and one of the largest off-day crowds of the season turned out to enjoy the superb weather and grand racing. The big stake fixture, the Roslyn Handicap at one mile and a furlong, was materially depleted by the with-, drawnl of the great filly Running Water. Its running marked an upset in the victory of the lightly weighted Athlete, which is in such present rare form that he was able to vanquish the high-class westerner, Hot Toddy, admirably ridden by Miller when the real struggle in the final sixteenth was on. Cressina was the layers' favorite, the public not taking the Joyner filly seriously and the result justified their acumen. Rye, the victim of a poor ride, cost his following a pretty penny. Finn contrived to get the little Bowery horse shut off so frequently in the early running that he was many lengths back on the last turn, where he sent hini up so fast that the end found the Sullivan horse staggering like a drunken man. Davy Johnson and Frank Farrell attempted a coup with Handzarra in the opening sprint which failed to materialize owing to the inopportune arrival of Dreamer, which Miller brought up at the finish 'With an irresistible rush. Toureune, the crack two-year-old, from which the close contention was looked for, made a sorry showing and his race should not be taken too seriously. The last race of the day, for maiden three-year-olds and upward, developed the hottest tip and the most sensational plunging seen this season. The medium of., this feverish, wagering, was; "WUlliaaX-Hus ton's Herodotus, which was credited with marvelous private trials, the most noteworthy being a recent mile in 1:40 over the Gravesend track. The layers were fairly swamped by intending bettors on the good thing when prices were posted. Such was the rush to get on in the clubhouse that speculators became paralyzed. No wagers were accepted nor was there even a price quoted for at least ten minutes. Fully $50,000 wore laid at 4 to 5 by the commissioners. The backers of the good thing were very lucky to cash. Horner finished badly on Deuce and Miller roughed him into defeat in the stretch. The claim of foul was dismissed. When Horner mounted the stewards' stand to lodge it the spectators got up and cheered themselves hoarse in anticipation that it would quickly be granted. ; Llchtmess fell when a hundred yards from the finish in this race, throwing Sewell heavily to the ground. The prostrate jockey squirmed about uneasily, but got up and then fell over as if in a faint. lie quickly revived, but was evidently in great pain when picked up and carried to the ambulance. There was general belief that he was badly hurt. It developed later that no bones were broken and the doctor declared that he would quickly recover. Delancy Nicholls will represent the Jockey Club at the trial of the bookmakers who were arrested at Bennings last spring for accepting wagers in the j betting ring on horses running there at the time. It is said that the present action constitutes an import- 1 ant test case. John Qulnn leaves for 'Frisco next Sunday. Bill j Cahlll will race his string at Washington before j shipping to California. J. T. Muir will send some high class horses to Oakland to participate in the ! racing there this winter, including Comedienne, Ostrich, Suffice, Claude Duval and others. Ed Purser departs next week for the same destination. Harry McCarthy left yesterday for Los Angeles. T. H. Ryan is undecided and may take in the j Bennings meeting before going west. It is reported that jockey Shaw will accept the terms offered him to ride for Weinberg Brothers in Germany next year. Long-Shots Are in Evidence at Latonia: Adesso, the Chief Surprise-Francis Trevelyan to Preside at City Park-Bert Osra Cut Down LONG-SHOTS ARE IN EVIDENCE AT XATONIA. Adesso, the Chief Surprise Francis Trevelyan to Preside at City Park Bert Osra Cut Down. Cincinnati, O., November 9. The regulars received an additional surprise at Latonia today when Adesso, at GO to 1, cantered home in the sprint race at three-quarters, for which. King Pepper was a pronounced favorite. In addition to Adesso scoring, other long-priced winners aided the bookmakers to fatten their bank rol?s at the expense of form players. From a spectacular point of view the racing today was interesting and enjoyed by about the largest attendance that has been in evidence at the course this week, fine weather being a sharp factor to aid the management in gathering the concourse to the course. The. victories of Henry Wat-terson and Ruiloha made some amends, but not sufficient to offset the losses sustained by the speculative element that gave battle to the books. Among today's arrivals was Barney Schreiber, who came over from his Woodlands Farm in Miissouri to spend a few days here before his departure for California. He stated that his season in the east was a profitable one and would have been much better if his good colt Jack. Atkin had not gone amiss from leg trouble. He considers the youngster the superior of Salvidere, Madden'e crack. Schreiber stated that he had sixty-one yearlings at his Missouri farm in addition to several colts that he had bred at Brentwood, Cal. The latter youngsters are the get of Sain mares which were mated to Orsini and Osra. Schreiber has rented a one-story cottage at Oakland, where he will live during the coming winter. The chief conversation among the horsemen today was about the decision of the Louisville executive committee in ruling Steve L'Hommedieu off. Many horsemen were of the belief that the committee had dealt harshly by the loud talking bookmaker, but on the face of the evidence and a close scrutiny of the affidavits sumbitted there was no other course for Messrs. Price, Grainger and Winn to pursue. Jockey Ford, who was astride Bluemint in the steeplechase, appeared to have sustained severe injuries when his mount went down, but. beyond having his ear badly cut was otherwise" uninjured. - Edward Corrigan received a telegram today from Francis Trevelyan accepting the tender of the presiding judgeship at City Park next winter. Fred Gerhardy will in all probability be the racing secretary of the plant. Still Alarm ran out all the way in the race that he was entered in and ran no way near his true form. Bert Osra was badly cut down in the race that he started in. But for the mishap lie would have been a close contender. Betting Cases to be Tried BETTING CASES TO BE TRIED. ; Washington, D. C, November 9. Some cases in. which eastern turf authorities are deeply interested will come up for trial here Monday. They grew out of the arrest of bookmakers at Bennings charged with violations of the gambling law. United States Attorney Daniel W. Baker is in charge of the prosecution and besides the regular attorneys for the defense, Delaney Nicol will assist as the special representative of the Jockey Club. He has acted for the Jockey Club in all cases tried in New York. The betting system at Bennings is that in vogue on the New York tracks. In the opinion of the New York judges who have tried betting cases there since the enactment of the Percy-Gray law, the present method of betting conies under the head of personal wagers a mode of speculation that is permissible, as it does not conic under the defined term of gambling or book-making. Whether the judges here will take the same view of betting as conducted at Bennings Is a matter of considerable doubt. Gus Straus' Will Probated GUS STRAUS' WILL PROBATED. Lexiugton, Ky., November 9. The will of Gus Straus, probated today, provides for continuing his business for five years in the interest of his widow, to whom he leaves his estate which is estimated to be wortli about $200,000. Lady Vera's Fast Mile at Pimlico: Tony Aste Lands Two Races-Herman Johnson Spoils a Sure Thing-Lotus Eater's Hard Race LADY VERA'S FAST MILE AT PIMLICO. Tony Aste Lands Two Races Herman Johnson Spoils a Sure Thing' Lotus Eater's Hard Race. Baltimore, Md., November 9. Victories of four favorites gladdened the regulars at Pimlico today. In addition, the track record for a mile was tied, rhe two-year-old Lady Vera, with 90 pounds up, won cantering in 1:40. She did this with such consummate ease that there- is no doubt she could have compassed the circuit of the old course in 1:40. Under the eastern scale she was conceding 12 pounds to Belle of Jessamine and Anneta Lady. Both of these ran good races, but the early pace was too much for them. Belle of Jessamine has been but once unplaced in her career and naturally engaged the bulk of the backing, though Anneta Lady and Lady Vera were stoutly supported by their adherents, the Woolthorpe filly particularly because of local loyalty. Tony Aste restored his boy Hagan to favor yesterday and the lad apparently appreciated the favor, for today he won with both Soprano and Diebold in the White and red. He had an easy victory on Soprano, but his win on Diebold was accomplished solely because he judged the pace accurately and at the end had enough in reserve to catch the ilying leader. Regal Lad, and still stall off the determined challenge of Dankall. One of the best things of the meeting went astray In the opening race of the day. It was one of those dyed-in-the-wool affairs that seemed to be spoiled by too much cleverness on the part of the manipulators. Quadrille, one of Willie Shields' string was generally conceded to be the winner, but Herman Johnson, at 15 to 1, upset calculations. Quadrille had pressed him closely to 'the final eighth then stumbled and lost some ground. Then it was that, the loafing Niblick came with a rush that, had the distance of the race been a hundred yards farther, would have landed him a winner. The betting from the first was suspicious to close ring observers and many of them . went to Quadrille heavily only to have fate intervene and land Herman Johnson the winner. Lotus Eater was a mighty poor 1 to 5 shot proposition in the fifth race. When he warmed up' before the race he was as sore as could be. He won, but only after a drive of over a furlong with the colt Ladsarion. Few people bet on Lotus Eater at the price and the people in' the stand shouted themselves hoarse for Ladsarion to win. Molesey, from a good start, worked through an early rough journey and came along on the outside with i rush into a good lead, but tired and finally barely won from Beauclere's serious challenge at the end. Beauclere, away slowly, closed up ground steadily and, in a belated end rush, just failed to get up and is a good colt. Acrobat displayed superior speed and stamina and was a keen contender to the final sixteenth. Judge Davey forced the pace to the last furlong, where he tired badly and is best in mud. Hig-ginbotham was shuttled to the rear early and made up considerable ground afterwards. Ted, away very oadly, closed a big gap and ran a good race. Woolstartle failed to stay and can do better. Athlete was skillfully reserved in the early running, moved up only when straightened for the stretcli run and made good right at the end in decisive style. Hot Toddy was rushed into a long lead and, after injudiciously setting a terrific pace for a mile, succumbed eventually to the lightly weighted winner, but ran a grand race. Cressina essayed to nead Hot Toddy in the early running and quit badly at the end. Rye, on the inside and badly messed about and shut off twice in the first half, ran up' quickly on the last turn and the effort tired him at the end of a good race.
