FINANCIAL AND SPECULATIVE SIDE OF RACING IN 1906. In 1000 Daily Racing Form published full charts on 6,844 facta, eovei tag the fifty meetings given by the thirty principal racing associations in the Cnited States and Canada, and from these charts the aeon panying table, which affords at a glaan a summary of some of the most saaiallal feature.- of the year's lacing, has been oomiiilcd. What probably bltncsta the owners of the horses most is the fact that the vast sum of $5,191,681 was distributed for these ti.siO races and that the average per raee was a fraction more than $750. Tlie columns containing the numbers of winning horses and winning owners at each nieet-teg affords interesting comparisons. By taking an average of the money distributed at each meeting. eithw for tlie number of days or tlie number of races, an idea of the comparative condition of racing in the several localities is obtained. On 112 of these races there was no betting -111 at Rockingham Park and one at the I'nited Hunts Racing Association at Bennings — s , the total number of tutting facta was 0.72s. Of these races favorites won 2. 752. or .41 pet cent. Second chiices won .2.'! iH-r cent, and otlu r than first and second favorites won .::ii pet cent. At the three days' meeting of the I'nited Hunts Baring Association, where stecplechasing was largely in vogue and where the Hampton Stable practically swept the boards. .56 pet cent, of the winners were favorites. At Bennings in the spring and Saratoga in the summer the public's choices scored in .52 and ..".1 per cent, of tlie races respectively. Those were the voist meetings of the year from tlie viewooini of the bookmaker. Favorites did not fare well at Belmont I'ark's meetings. At the ■«( apriag only .:;:'. per cent, first choices won; at tlie second spring meeting .;!!» and at the fall meeting ."!». The reverse way of niiinin- is thought by many to have li -concerted Ihe publte in its estimation of the chances of its choices. At DoagbM l'ark. the new plant at loulsville, favorit -s won only .:::; per cent. Ibis was the poorest showing at the western tracks. The combined winnings of these 200 owners was $3.0S.s.* 13, leaving $1,503,008 to the 1.3.37 less fortunate of their fellows. James R. Keene. who again heads the list of winning owners, and Thomas Hitchcock., Jr., who is second in the standing, were the only persons to reach or surpass $100,000 in winnings last year, whereas in 1866 there were four in the list; Mr. Keene. with $22S.724; H. P. Whitney. $170,447: Sydney Paget, 6137,886, and S. S. Brown, $113.. ".72: In the last four years Mr. Keene's horses have earned for him in stakes and purses 8688,773, Prior to 190o his best year on the turf was 1S03 (Domino's yeir.i. In 1004 there were seven winners of over $100,000: H. B. Duryea (who headed the list with $2*10,10". racing in his name tlie horses leased from the estate of William C. Whitney), James R. Keene. B. It. Thomas. Sydney Paget, Newton Bennington, S. S. Brown, and John A. Drake. Had Sysonby lived and raced there Is hardly a dcubt that Mr. Keene would have equalled, if not surpassed his winnings of BtO. . This year his two-year-olds were his main dependence. Court Dress. Ballot and Peter Pan were his In-st. This trio won over $00,000 1" r him. Court Dress won the Fashion, Gaiety. Criterion. Spinaway and the Produce Stakes: Ballot won the Double Kvent. Neptune and Matron, while Peter Pan triumphed in the Surf, Flash and Hopeful. Kuroki was the only three -year-old in his barn to win a stake. He took the Spindrift. Suffrage was his next best of that age, taking five races. Salvidere, of course, contributed most to the success of Mr. Hitchcock. In buying that gelding at the Brown sale John E. Madden, who has an interest in him. made a wise. or. if you chose, a lucky more. The Montauk, Brighton, Junior. Champion are the Stakes which the son of Belvldere — Sallie of Navarre won in Mr. Hitchcock's colors, bringing him over $.V),000. The steeplechasers Hylas and Oood and Plenty, contributed over $30,000. The former won Ute Champion, the New Xork and the Biigliton. while the latter triumphed in the Whitney Mci110r.1l and Crand National. Burgomaster's Carlton and Belmont, Ironsides' Hindoo and Jerome. Killaloe's (ireat Filly, Brook-dale Nymph's Brighton Oaks, and Perversc's Ladies and Mermaid victories were the chief factors in placing Harry Payne Whitney in third position in the standing. Had it not been for the $72,475 which Accountant brought him through his victories in the Tidal, Realization, Brighton Derby, Saratoga Derby and Annual Champion Stakes, James B. Brady would not have ranked fourth in the list. He did not buy Accountant from the Brown stable until after Burgomaster had been put aside for the season and in this he was wis,., l'ountainblue, which he iHMiglit from Fred Forsythe, won the Partridge and Triumph Stakes for him. Oiseau was a great disappointment. To include the racing on the minor tracks, at which none of the aforesaid gentlemen had horses, would give Barney BebflHbet fourth place In the list of winning owners, for he won ten races and 83.626 at Seattle. This makes his total winnings 186,713. He would probably have won a large amount had he entered more freely in the stakes in the east and had not Jack Atkiu gone wrong. Mr. Schreiher maintains a large establishment and raced in three and four divisions throughout the year. Horace E., wbich he sold to Roy A. Rainey for i $25,000 won for Mr. Beknfbef the Woodlands. Santa Barbara and Santa Monica Stakes at Ascot Park: the Fiidine Stakes at Oakland, and tile (iaston Hotel I and Memphis Stakes at Memphis. Nealon triumphed in the Dolphin. Turf Handicap and September Stakes at Sheepshead Bay. Dr. Gardner won the Follans- | bee Highweight Handicap at Oakland and, when lie had displayed his quality ill the east, he was i sold to T. D. Sullivan and Frank Farrell for $15,000. ' For his new owners Dr. Gardner won the Bronx Highweight Handh-ip. Jack Atkin, which Mr. Schreilier has always regarded as better than Horace F.. won the Nursery Stakes at Louisville and the Iroquois Stakes at Buffalo. Tom McOrath won the Adam Andrew Stakes at Oakland and the Teunes~.ee Brewing Company Stakes at Memphis. Tony Faust won two stakes at Oakland in tlie colors of S. C. JIILDRETII'S "BABIES" BEST. HIACKO WINS THE JUVENILE RACE AND BILLY WATKINS IS THIRD. Miller Rides Three Winners — Rubric's Per* formance Is Displeasinq — Weather Bad and Track Still Heavy. Oakland. Cal., January 2. — Walter Miller started today's proceedings at Oakland by winning on Yo San and Hersajn. He did not ride in the juvenile race, but had the mount on Rubric, the second choice in the handicap, the card's feature at sis furlongs. The Gaylord horse was unable to raiso I IcapeetaMe gallop and finished a had last in a field of live horses. Miller's numerous following-denounced the trainer vigorously and the incident left a bad impression on race-goers generally. On Voladay Miller rode his third winner. S. C. Hildreth uncovered a pair of promising two-year olds iu Hiacko and Billy Watkins. which finished first and third rcsix-ctively iu the two-year-ohl raee. They were the mediums of tremendous stable support at odds on and ran like a pair of veterans. Ilildreth's barn is credited with sheltering a halt dozen cracker. jacks. The track continues to lie heavy and holding. Tlie weather conditions were decidedly inclement, but the attendance and interest in the si* rt was i • iiiinid.v undiminished. Daga have been banished from the inclosure. .in exetriae boy named Johnson in the employ of W. P. Magrane. was badly injured from l eing kicked and trampled on by a two-year-old in the stable. A new Jockey baaed was Installed yesterday. Th« names and numbers of the riders can be easily read with the naked eye from any part of the grandstand. Ocean Shore and St. Francis will he given a let-up. 0. A. Bianchi has sold Captain Burnett and Alaru: to J. MeCarty and Henry Mann respectively. Price not divulged. Wally Brinkworth is tlie most recent arrival from the east. About the Two Year Olds. ABOUT THE TWO-YEAR-OLDS. The statement that Whisk Broom was bred by the late Captain S. S. Brown at Senorita Stud is incorrect. She was bred by Milton Young at Mc-Crathiana Stud, but was sold in the same sale with, the Senorita Stud yearlings at Sheepshead Bay, where Rolierr Tucker bought her for $M00. (a lea. the dam of Gremse. is a full sister to Jean Rereaud. winner of 886,687. Grenise was bred by John K. M.nlden at Hamburg Place and was hoii-ht by I'nd Burlcw- at Saratoga last August tor 61,6661 She is an early foal, having been drop-I ed February 13. 1865. Hazel M. was bred in Dr. Npet's Kindergarten Stud at Versailles. Ky. Her fourth dam, Senii er It li\. was t hi* dam of Leonatus, and as yet that is her chief claim to distinction. She brought $125 as a yearling. Hiacko. with which S. C. Hildreth won tlie "baby" race at Oakland yesterday, is out of My Fate, a full sister to tjie famous May Hempstead, nildretb. got Hiacko for 69661 BBC was bred at Rancho del Paso. Billy Walkins. which finished third in the same race, came out of the same sale and cost Mr. llildreth tlie same sum as did Hiacko. Billy Wat-kins is a half brother to Maxey More. Stanton, but his servkres are sublet this winter to Thomas II. Williams and he will ride for tlie Newcastle Stable on the New York tracks next spring, summer and autumn. II. P. M., Chicago. Tlie question raised is very interesting, but ir is evident B is wrong iu his contention that tlie parlay lost. It is bound to be a wim.er as to Maliel Hollander and The Mighty, and at least a dead heat, as betweea Cloudlight and* the entry. The place prices are not determining factors, but are useful. The claim that CBMaBgkt'a place price shoiihl decide is offset by the agreements as to weights, imt the separate place prices against Sir Russell and Phalanx show that it was the former and not the latter that made the entry equal in favoritism with Cloudlight. On the w hole It seems the right thing to pay the parlay as winning on the lust and third races and a dead heat on the second. Page 2 DAILY RAGING FORM ISSUKD EVERY DAY.
