Biq Entry List Rollinq In for the Sprinq Handicaps — New York Racinq News. New York, January 8. — l'p to four o'clock this afternoon fifty seven nominations had lieen received for the Brooklyn Handicap, entries for which closed :it midnight last night. This is considered a big showing for the first day and then- is every indica tion of heavy entries in all the important stakes. Assistant Secretary Smith of the Coney Island Jockey Club is sick and was unable to lie at his office today. No tabulation of the Suburban entris received had been made, but it was announced that the list was a heavy one. The same holds good for Brighton and there will be little surprise if the records for the big handicaps are broken. James B. Haggin still is the heaviest nominator to the Produce Stakes. He has made 2M entries to both the Futurity and the Brighton Produce of 1808. This is an increase from him. For the Hopeful, which closed in November he made 388 nominations. The unpaid forfeit list for 1888 was made public today. It amounts to .*2n.t;oO. or less than three-fourths of one per cent, of the total amount of money distributed to horsemen by associations racing under the jurisdiction of the Jockey Club. Trainer John W. Rogers will leave Saturday or Sunday for Aiken. S. C, to take active charge of the stable of Harry Payne Whitney. Save for the brief visit to the winter training ground at 4he time of the shipment of the establishment, Mr. Rogers has been dividing his time since the close of the season between the Brookdale Farm and his home at Westchester. D'Arkle is at Billy Garth's place in Virginia. Ills being schooled for jumping and Mr. Garth predicts for him a great career as a cross-country racer. Trainer Tom Welsh of the Newcastle Stable will leave next week for California. He expects to put in about six weeks on the coast. W. B. Applegatc, Jr., who has been on a hunting trip since the c]i»se of the meeting at Bennings. will leave for New Orleans shortly. There are only four staldes being wintered at Jamaica. January :'.. — What looked for a moment like a repetition of the killing of jockey lawis occurred in the steeplechase today when May S. fell heavily with Collis after taking the first jump. Collis was picked up limp and apparently lifeless and quickly removed to the hospital, where, after lxdng unconscious for quite a spell, he rallied fast. Although no Nines were broken. Collis ex-pt derated much IiIimxI and was undoubtedly hurt internally. The track doctor, however, does not re ganl his condition as serious. La Gloria got over the Futurity Course fast today, clearly showing that her forte is on ■ fust track. The wiseacres threw out her mud races and supported her almost to a man. The finish in the fifth race was of the hair raising kind, many believing that El Cazador had won. but in this case those best in a position to judge were positive that the judicial placing was correct. Colonel Jack grabbed himself badly while leaving the |M st. almost falling. His nigh front quarter was lacerated badly and bled profusely after the race. The injury should lay him up for some time. Line of Life is down with a high fever and doubts are entertained as to her recovery. Mutuel Betting in France. MUTUEL BETTING IN FRANCE. When bookmakers were barred from doing business in France little more than a year ago. confining speculation on racing to the mutuels, all smts of dire predictions were made as to the future of the turf in that country. It was freely claimed that racing would lose its popularity under the ex elusive system of mutuel betting. It is interesting, therefore, to note how the turf has fared during the period that has just closed the first full year of racing under the new conditions. When making a comparison liotween receipts .and profits in litOti as against 1888 it is sufficient to take the balance sheets of the five leading "societies" in France. These are the Societe d'Eneourage-mpnt. the Societe des Steeplechases de France, the Societe Sportive, the Societe du Demi-Sang and the Societe de sport dc rr.i.nT. The yartaaasahai af the societies named in Paris and the neighborhood, where most of the important racing is regularly held. There have been a few owners who have forsaken the turf owing to the "monopoly" control of betting, but there have been many newcomers to take their places. The opponents of the mutuels have frequently stated that the public did not attend meetings as much now as heretofore. In this statement they had truth on their side, but the falling off in gate receipts has only amounted to $40,000 for the whole year. The full turnover amounted to $1,830,000. so if one reckons the dethroned bookmakers who have not found it worth while to attend racing this past season the discrepancy is practically accounted for. It can thus be seen that (here is no diminution in the ordinary race going population. And w Ikii one comes to the marked increase in mutuel profits it eaa readily tie understood that lioth the Pleath government and the various race societies have cause for self congratulation. It must always lie recollected that the profits the race societies make do not g into private bands. They are all devoted to the advancement of racing, breeding, etc. The mutuels handled aliout $54^83,888 during the year, which shows an increase of about $7,110,000 on the takings in 1886. The government and the five societies named halve the eight per cent, deducted, the government's share licing about $8,188.-i» hi. ,,r nearly $238,086 more than in the previous year. This sum is expended on the |ioor, irrigation, etc. Only last week the government commissioners voted $888,888 for irrigation purposes in 'JliS districts. The remaining 1( 1 will be attended to shortly. The publication of these race statistics plainly point to the increasing success of crosscountry racing. The Steeptechaae Society and the Societe de Sport de Frainv the two big jumping bodies are the only two to show an increase in gate receipts. Then the Steeplechase Society (which has charge of Auteuil) has actually taken more money in gate receipts and in mutuel investments than the Societe d'Kncouragement. whose authority extends to Long-champ and Chantilly. In fact, the Steeplechase Society alone shows an increase of $8(888 in "gate" and $1,772,110 in mutuel money over last year. M. Kuan has frequently expressed himself of late as perfectly satisfied, and it would api ear that so long as the present prosperity remains in the French racing world bookmakers have merely a "long odds" chance of returning to their old haunts. Resides, they cannot compete with mutuel prices against outsiders. Named for the Big Handicaps. NAMED FOR THE BIG HANDICAPS. Oakland, Cal., January 3. — Logistilla, Nealon. Proper and Dr. Leggo have all l een nominated to the Brixiklyn, Suburban and the Brighton Handicaps. Nealon is also engaged in every stake of importance on the New York tracks. There is an unconfirmed rumor that the crack three-year-old Tony Faust has gone lame. Baldwin Visits Oakland. BALDWIN VISITS OAKLAND. Oakland, Cal., January 3.— E. J. (Lucky) Bald win was a visitor at the track today. The famous turfman waxed enthusiastic over his Arcadia race track project. The track proper will be one mile and a furlong with a seven-furlong straightaway out of a chute. He says that it will be ready for racing by next November, Angry Crowd at Oakland: Holtman Leaves Two Horses at the Post and They Hiss Him. ANGRY CROWD AT OAKLAND HOLTMAN LEAVES TWO HORSES AT THE POST AND THEY HISS HIM. Keene Wins a Biq Bet on Triumphant-Jockeys Williams and Rettiq Are Injured in a Spill. Oakland. Cal.. January 3. — Some r..ooo racegoers took part in a hostile demonstration against starter Holtman at the Oakland race course today. The hissing and yells of disapproval by the spectators continued for several minutes after the unlucky official returned to the judges' stand after the third race in which Golden Rule and Princess Wheeler were left at the post and the remainder of the field was apparently sent away in processional order. Close observers declared that all the horses were moving simultaneously ami in perfect alignment when Holtman released the barrier, but in such close proximity that they got in one another's way. Miller, on the Inside, stole away with Triumphant as if the others were anchored. Thurston, who had the mount on Golden Rule, is a novice audi his lieing left should not be taken seriously. Miller's riding continues to lie the star feature of the racing at Oakland those days, but the champion's beat efforts were unavailing on his employer's three-year-old Roalta. in the introductory race. Tlje disqualification of La Rose advancd him into second pine wilh Korosilany iii the race following, He succeeded in spreadeagling the opposition in tho third with Trktmphant and incidentally landed the greatest coup of the season for the owner, J. O. Keene. Miller earned a lucky third and second with Sir Carter and Baker hi the fourth and fifth respectively, winding up a strenuous afternoon's work with a brilliant victory on Escamado, by which the climax of popular enthusiasm was aroused. Rough riding had no share in the spills sustained by L. Williams and Rettig. Both jockeys were incapacitated from riding during the rest of tiie afternoon. Williams, who had many eaajagnaaata, was only slightly injured, but Rettig did aft escape so luckily, and may not be seen in the saddle for several weeks. Jockey Sandy, injured by a fall from Plausible on Tuesday, will resume riding tone. now. Teddy Robinson, one of the most reliable "money riders" in the country, attached for the past few seasons to Applegate & Cotton's stables, lias retired from the saddle anil leaves for Cleveland today, where he will attend school. He is unquestionably the most finished steeplechase rider ill America. Archibald, who is second in the list, shows vast improvement over his riding in 1905, when he piloted only four winners out of forty-seven mounts. Hoeston, who is third, was not in the list, of 1905. Dupee has shown some improvement, likewise McIIenry. It was E. Morri- I son's first year at cross-country riding. He did exceptionally well. Oaylor. who was second to Ray in 1905. took a big slump. The Liverpool Grand National Handicap is by common consent the leading steeplechase of the turf WSrkg, althOOgh it is not the most valuable. It is practically as well know 11 as the Fpsoni Derby to admirers of racing the world over. 'litis lends interest, to recent, changes in its conditions, of which an editorial in a recent edition of London Sporting Life says: "For the time lwing. however, interest is chiefly centered in the Grand National Steeplechase, mainly beeanoo the eaadttkmo governing this Mgblj popular even! have oniv more been revised. It will be the very general opinion that the alterations are decidedly for the better. No ane wili he disposed to quarrel with the executive for raising the value of the' prize from £2,750 to £3,000. The Grand Steeple, -base de Paris, decided at Aurenil in June, is worth £0,000, and we ought not to rest satisfied until our Blearier race under National Hunt Rules is brought more nearly into line with its counterpart in Fiance. However, it is something to know that the disparity is gradually being lessened. An extra £2M does not carry us very far, but every little helps. In Iftol the Grand National was worth £2,500, so that there has been a M per cent, advance in six years. If this rate is steadily maintained some of us may live to see the £3,000 goal reached. So far as the monetary cimdilioiis are concerned, the only other alteration is that the horse Itnisliin- fourth is to receive £T5 instead of £30 0a last year. "But the chaicre just alluded to is not by any means the im st material of the innovations that have b :, introduced. Hitherto the Male of penalties op ling against candidates for the Blue Riband of the 'Chase has not only keen of a complex character, but it has bad a most damaging influence on (he sport in general up to the end of March in sack season. Here are the conditions that governed the race last season: 'Winners alter the publication of the weights of any two steeple, haves of three miles or over to carry four pounds, of a handicap steeplechase of any value • •v.-r a disl. nice e\eeodii,g three miles, or of any steeplechl .• value 000 s..vs over any distance six pounds ,-\ *,; no penalties (or winners of steeple-el, ases eonfmed to maidens at starting: horses originally handicapped in ||,is race abate eleven stone. sewn j son, and under twelve stone to carry only hnlf of the foregoing penalties respectively, and if originally at twelve stone and op wards exempted from penoHlea.' This scheme was complex: nevertheless its meaning was plain enough to those who had iniiuals engaged in the ran' possessing even so much as half a chance of winning. They could not. afford to run Che risk of their horses incurring a penalty; ami so it came to pass that the managers of an eh mie llngi : s thane at flandown Tmd Kempt. ,11 had to be (.ireful when drawing up their programs. In this way every body suffered. The drawback is now. however, praclically removed. The new conditions read: 'A winner after publication of the aneighta of a handicap steeplechase of three miles and a I, all' or over to carry four pounds extra: winners originally handicapped at eleven stone or o\er 10 U- exempted from penalties." That is plain. straightforward, and sensible. Once the weights are published a horse engaged in the Grand National can. without injury lo his prospects, run in public as often as his OWBet chouses ill any races of les-dish. ace than three miles and a half." and there are not many event! in which the contestants are asked to traverse more than three miles: and even in these lew the belter class horses can compete without fear of the e. msequences. The probability is that we shall henceforth see a goodly 'proportion of the candidates for Liverpool lionirs doing Hie most strenuous part of their preparation in public, and interest in the great Aintreo race will lie heightened accordingly. ll will tie the finest ailveriiseinenl that could possibly lie procured, surpassing in that regard tec benefit derived from ante-post betting. "The regulation that horses handicapped at eleven atone or over shall he exempted from penultg is particularly valcalde. There is too great a tendency to crush goo.l horses wilii weight. II may !«• said tha! four pounds is not a very serious matter, but it means ., ienl over the four and a half miles at Ainlree. fipohlng back to last year's handicap for the Grand National the following were handicapped at eleven stone or over: Leinster. twelve stone seven pounds; Kirkland. twelve some live pounds; Drumeree, twelve atone; John M. P.. eleven sic.iie eight pounds; Roman Law. eleven stone five pounds: Phil May. eleven stone five pounds: Pal-lan ler. eleven BtOM two pounds; Aunt May. eleven stone two pounds; Comfit, eleven stone: Ranunculus. eleven stone. Then came Timothy Titos and BOOehOl Ogue at ten stone twelve pooanti each, of course, ii is coiieeival.Ie that a horse originally handicapped al ten stone twelve ponndo may earn a four pound penalty, an. I in that event he will be worse off than if he had. in the krst instance, received an extra two pounds. This anomaly might lie avoided another year by the insertion of a clause stipulating thai under sin h . i, cms!., SCOO ihc lease .shall carry eleven stone al A intree.''
