Had there been anything to give her argu- t incut at the finish she might have made even a better a record. Five started and Alma Dufour was favorite, with Peter Sterling second choice and Judge Post * next in demand. Mamie Algol and Big Bow being not at nil considered in such compauy. It was a I fair test Tor Judge Post, a three-year-old. at such a distance and the Kurlew & O'Neill colt received quite as much credit for the manner in which he sei the pace and carried Peter Sterling at a clip ( that was entirely too much for him. all of which f was just to the liking of Alma Dufour. After the . first mile Judge Post tired. Alma Dufour went to j the front and in the last quarter had it all her own • way. Burlew has long claimed that Judge Post , Is as good, if not better, than Juggler, and this race ( seems to justify that belief, so far as racing at a j distance up to a mile is concerned. Here the three-year-old was a very tired colt and. having lost his whip. Hennessy was forced to the use of his rap as a persuasive to keep Judge Post going to save second . place when he staggered at the finish. ( Another new track record was set when Lee Crest, making his debut in the two year-old race, ran the . three-eighths of a mile in IB seconds. This youngster was a surprise even to Fred Burlew. Jockey Mountain, who had announced his intention oi going to Hot Springs, will not be able to attend the oi ening of that meeting. While riding Anna Day in the first race he met with an accident that will lay him up for some time. Turning into the stretch in a good position Mountain was forced to take his mount back to go around the leaders and there Anna Day fell. Mountain's right forearm was broken, in addition to the twisting of bis left thumb, from which he suffered greatly. For misbehavior at the post in the sixth race jockey Mitchell was suspended for two days by the starter. ^ Jamestown Track Site. JAMESTOWN TRACK SITE. Norfolk. January 17. — The heaviest rain that has fallen here in years deluged Hie track Q today and kept the attendance down to a handful ,.. the regulars. It fairly poured down all after-noon, making the colors of the jockey's difficult to distinguish. What little interest there was. centered in the fourth Mar, a free handicap for j three year olds and upward at one mile, which was taken by A. Muskoday in hollow fashion. He yimply », reveled iu the water, never leaving the result in ^ doubt. The betting was light and spiritless, with the books having a shade the better of it. _ J. P. Eight are by Persim- , mon, two by St. Simon, and one each by Ladas, Florizel II., and Diamond Jubilee. Thus It will be seen that the same strains which have been maintained, in recent years are again in strong evidence, and it is this fact alone which makes one afraid to prophesy any great improvement in the racing ability of the King's horses. Perhaps they will at last rise to the occasion, yet the fact remains that, although Persimmon has sired any number of good stock for other owners, he has never yet given His Majesty anything within measurable distance of himself as a racehorse. Of the thirteen youngsters Peridone is an own nVother to Zinfandel, and this one. at least, should race. Then there are a half sister to Victoria and an own sister to Slim Lad, and it is quite time that the dam of the latter, the beautiful Laodamia. produced something useful. ' i ■ i r I I] v r " t RUNNING WATER WINTERING WELL. \ Has Developed Into a Grand Looking Mare — Suburban Her First Engagement. New York, January 17. — Tom Welsh's stables at Gravesend house more than one horse that Is practically sure to be heard from this season in a big way. Naturally Running Water is the most promin- J out. This good filly wound up the season with victory in the Hdgemere Stakes and was one of the best and most consistent performers of 1JKMJ. She won seven races after the Newcastle Stable paid $25,000 for tier and Content at Saratoga, six of them lieing stakes. In winter quarters Running Water has thickened . ami spread into a really grand looking mare. She retired sound, and the Newcastle Stable can look I bee with great confidence as one of the stars of r the coming season. Running Water showed last . fall that all distances are alike to her and that, . she Is a splendid weight carrier. She was not . named for the Brooklyn, her first important engagement being the Suburban. This would indicate that she will not he hurried, but that her earlier races will be preparatory to the Sheepshead Bay race, always providing, of course, that the weight assigned her is satisfactory. She is the mainstay of the stable and the older division, but In J. C. Core, McCarter and Momentum the stable has a trio of three vear-olds that will i surely prove useful if nothing more, and it would be little surprise if J. C. Core is much more than merely useful. He Is a very fast horse, and has Improved so much with his long let-up (he was retired very early), that he is sure to take a high . place among the sprinters at any rate. Momentum. while onlv a plater, is a consistent one, as his record of eleven winning races last year will show. McCarter may not be quite high class, but is liable to keep the topnotchers busy to beat him. England's Eight Big Handicaps.: Entries to the Spring Events Are in some Instances Numerically Disappointing. ' , ► i ! I i I ENGLAND'S EIGHT BIG HANDICAPS. Entries to the Spring Events Are in Some Instances Numerically Disappointing. The latest London exchanges bring the entries received January 1 to the eight big handicaps to be run in England the coming spring, and likewise the information that the showing, numerically, in some instances is most disappointing. The Lincolnshire Handicap of 1,000 sovereigns, one mile straight, to be run at Lincoln. March 19, has forty-five entries, which is five less than the number received in 1S98, the lowest in nine years. The Queen's Prize Handicap, 1.000 sovereigns, one mile and a half, to be run on the Round Course at Kempton Park, April 1, received only twenty-eight entries. . The Newbury Spring Cup Handicap of 1.250 sovereigns and a cup valued at fifty sovereigns, one mile straight, to be run at Newbury, April l."{, received thirty-five entries. The Great Metropolitan Handicap of 1,000 sovereigns, about two miles and a quarter, to be run at Epsom Downs, April 2.X. received forty-one entries, seven more than last year. The City and Suburban Handicap of 2,000 sovereigns, about one mile and a quarter, to be run at Epsom Downs. April 24. received forty-three entries, twenty-one less than last year and the lowest In i nine years. The Great Jubilee Handicap of 3,000 sovereigns, ' one mile and a quarter over the Jubilee Course, to he ,run at Kempton Park, May 11, received forty entries, thirty-four less than it had in 1001, its Ix-st year, and equal with the number it had in 1808, the worst year in the last nine. The Chester Cup Handicap of 2,500 sovereigns and a cup valued at fifty sovereigns, nearly two miles , and a quarter, to lie run over the Old Cup Course at Chester, May 8, received forty-nine entries— decidedly better than last year when it did not • fill at the original date of closing. The Manchester Cup Handicap of 2.750 sovereigns and a gold cup valued at 250 sovereigns, one mile and a half, to be run over the Cup Course at Manchester, May 24, received fifty -four entries. Commenting upon these numbers, the Sporting Life says: "Race course managers have little cause i' to be jubilant. Regarded from the numerical standpoint, the entries for the Spring Handicaps are ■ disappointing. There is a falling off nearly all 1 round, and in one or two cases the deficiency is » quite unaccountably pronounced. If only we could i be sure that the numerical strength of the entries for the Great Metropolitan aud the Chester Cup P could be regarded as conclusive evidence of a growing disposition to foster racing over two miles s or more we might, in spite of all that tends to the e contrary, be well satisfied with the state of things s with which we are today confronted." A. D. Payne's Farm in Virginia. t i r - s t 1 s 1 , A. D. PAYNE'S FARM IN VIRGINIA. "At his A nulla Farm, near Charlottesville, Va., A. I). Payne has 500 acres of the best blue grass in Albemarle County, watered by running streams in every field and paddock. The land is hilly, giving youngsters every chance for muscular development, aud his are allowed to run in the open from sunup to sundown, with three meals a day regularly," says the Morning Telegraph. "At the Payne farm are the young stallions Merryday and Cherry Pit, both by the same sire, Eolus, out of imported mares. Merryday has only had seven public performers, and four have been winners; while Cherry Pit is a full brother to the great Morello. He has also twenty-nine highly bred mares, by Masetto, Luxamore, King Ernest, Jim Gray, Hagioscope, Knight of the Garter, Charaxus, Eon, Requital, Wanderer, The Chevalier, liossington, Eolus, Quicklime and oilier aires." M' Bride's Narrow Escape.: Jockey is Thrown High in Air, but is Not Injured by Fall. \ J . I r . . . i . M'BRIDE'S NARROW ESCAPE. JOCKEY IS THROWN HIGH IN AIR, BUT IS NOT INJURED BY FALL. Jamming in the Two-Year-Old Race the Cause — Hilo de Oro Carries the Williams Colors to Victory. Oakland, Cal.. January 17. — Jockey Joe McBride had a miraculous escape from death or serious Injury whMe riding the favorite. Albia. In the first race at Oakland today. H. T. Griffin's filly forced the pace during the early running, but was suddenly hemmed in and bumped in the final sixteenth by the fast coming Raleigh on the outside aud College Widow on the Inside. This pair succeeded in forming a wedge when nearlng the finish and McBride was forced to pull up sharply with Albia. The two offenders nine together with a crash. Albia, not quite clear, was thrown to her knees and her jockey was sent flying through the air. He turned a complete somersault and fell flat on his back right in the path of the oncoming trailers, everyone of which successfully cleared the prostrate rider. It was probably the most thrilling and spectacular fall ever witnessed on a race course. That McBride was not killed outright seemed almost beyond belief. Many horror stricken spectators screamed aloud and several women fainted. Besides a severe shaking up, he sustained a slight cut on the back of his head. The foul committed by Raleigh was palpable and apparent to the veriest novice, yet the original placings were quickly confirmed, there was no Investigation and as far as known no one was punished or held responsible. The injured jockey was not able to appear in his owu behalf and no effort waa made to get his version of the affair. Tom William's black and orange racing colors were seen in front for the first time in more than a decade in the second race, when Walter Miller landed Hllo de Oro a winner for his employer. From a time standpoint the race was the slowest ever decided over this course. Duruell backed Baker heavily, but Baker did not take kindly to the going and could do no better than third. He started him also for the Cumpau Stakes, but Men crejth beat him. the differ-em-e in Weight being twelve pounds to t lie favor of .Moii.Tcilh. Six days later he was at Sheepshead Bay where he showed his heels to Cleophus, Voter and) Hasting! la the Anton Handicap. The New York Sun says the poolrooms in the metropolis have been hit for over $45,000 this week. Billy Pinkerton. it is said, has an interest in the two-year-olds S. C. Hildreth is racing at Oakland. "It is doubtful." says the Morning Telegraph, "if there is a better looking three year -old at Gravesend than Frank Gill. The best of the two year-olds owned by Burlew & O'Neill are wintering at Gravesend in charge of trainer Joe Kelly. Frank Lord has l een treated by Dr. Sheppard for a slight 1k w of the tendon In one of his forelegs. It is said that he will stand training. Frank Taylor Will train Belcast this year. It is expected that he will also handle the seven horses of the Patchogue Stable, now running out at the Preakness Farm. Jack Martin's riding at New Orleans has been so poor as to incite general comment. However, he is not the first jockey who has fallen down In his work just after taking a wife. "I intend to turn Bearcatcher out for a year," said Garnet Ferguson to the San Francisco Chronicle. "The only chance for the old horse is a long rest. This may help him, but I have my doubts." It is said at New Orleans that Burlew & O'Neill are little better than even on the winter. Their horses have won something like $20,000 since the opening of the season in the Crescent City, but it is claimed that this has been lost to New York pcolrooms on horses that they regarded as cinches, only to find them failures.
