Two Jockeys Are Unseated— Shreve Is Suspended — Hasty the Day's Surprise. Hot springs. Ark.. March IB.— The raetag at Oal lawn today was generally tins.it islactory. In the main they were .jostling and bumping matches. The rough riding in the third and fourth ra.es was m,lst pronounced. The third race was at seven furlongs. The track at the starting petal for such races is thrown up to the outside, dipping toward the inner rail. This causes the horses to crowd, ami when the field is large there is invariably a jam a- they are sent away. Today there were lifteen horses starting. Skirvin was knocked ofT Marc.. and J. Heiinison was forced to pull up Chief Milli-kin. In future all races at seven furlongs will be limited to ten horses. At the start of tlie fourth tare Shreve. who was riding King Wilda. permitted his mount to bump into Calmcda and D. Kilev was unseated. Shreve was suspended for two weeks. The victory of Hasty over Hollow and Rustle in the third race was the most surprising incident of the day. March 15. — The directors of the Coney Island Jockey Club have instructed Superintendent Clark of tlie Sheepshead Bay track to prepare plans for an addition to the school house for stable boys on the Neck Road. Tlie classes are growing so rapidly that more room is a necessity. Two teachers are now employed and a third will come when there is more room. The Coney Island Jockey Club foots all the bills. The pupils are not even required V) furnish their books. There is nutuiug compulifory about a I tendance. Such methods are not needed. The boys are eager to learn. The itopular impression iu regard to stable lads is that they are a set of little rutlians, lacking good manners and all of the little niceties that go to make up the well behaved little gentleman that the American boy of this age is siipjiosed to he. This, like many other ideas of the turf, is entirely wrong. The first re|x rt on deportment turned in to A. J. Joyner. whose lads are pupils of the sceool. should dispel the idea of ill-maniiered little rutlians. The BBpart is signed by Miss Relle Maguire, the teacher, and reads: "Tear lioys are a credit to your training, as they know how and when to behave, and I want to thank you lac your assistance iu the work." Other trainers have received similar reaarta, and so far as deportment goes the school will compare favorably with any located in the best residence see tious of New York City, while the eagerness of the youngslers to tajie full advantage of the wel come, but limited, opportunities afforded them for self improvement is so sincere as to be almost pathetic. N.ian.l in honor of Colonel Il.irry I. Thornton, predecessor of Thomas 11 Williams in tin presidency of the California lackey Club, it was first run in 1895 :.nd f'-ll to Wilbur Smith's sturdy Stayer, Gilead. with Pat Dunnes Hawthorne second. Since then it has steed high in the regard of San Francisco patrons of the turf and its remarkali'e popularity i an object leSMSI that should appeal to eastern raeteg oiganizations. Very spectacular and sensational have been some of the contests for the Thoiiiti.n. In ISM Star Ruby won through masterly jockeyship en the part of cool-headed Willie Martin. Gi!ca.'. an.'. Claudius raced ont far in front for three and a tntarter miles, while Star Ruby was actually uio.v than i half mile lielrn 1 l"f most of this distance and galloping along so slowly that he was a beak horse when he reached the turn into the backstutch in the fourth mil-. Then Martin sent him along three -quartets in 1:1 I] and \ oi Py twenty lengths. The race in is:t!». when The Rachel. ,r broke all records for s race at four miles, was another memorable contest. David Tenny. also running a great race and forcing the record breaking. Judge Denny in 189S. Porte in 1900 and Locochee in 1901 all ran grand races at tie distance. If no raiu falls » great contest -Inuld reward spectators this afternoon. Dr. Lefts*, Mamie Algal, Ramus and even Jake Moose are better racers than have started for the event since Siddons won in l.nc and if some horse !a sent out to make the pace fast, even 'I he Bachelor's record may be eclipsed. ( : 1 j ' 1 j . j ' J . 1 . , » 1 , , 1 1 | , * I ) BRIGHT PROSPECTS FOR 'CHASING. Belmont Park Stake Entries Forecast Great Sport — F. A. Clark's Four Jumpers. New York. March 15. — If the entiies ,.tu be taken as a criteria*, ereaa-eoaatry racing at Belmont Park this spring will be of a high order. The steeple Chase events have tilled wonderfully well. The Whitney Memorial re.-eived eleven ■ahaill|llil— two more than last year. The names of the sub ■crfhera have not yei been made public, but the] undoubtedly include all of the leading steeplechase owners. The name of Geed and Plenty, winner of the two former runnings of the event, will doubt less be found as one of Thomas Bttehceek, fc.'a eetrlea when the horses are named. .May 1. The conditions for the lace are not such as |., attract a big entry list, as the subscription is .v.mi. half forfeit. The conditions permit three harass i to be named tot ea.-h subscription on May 1. only one of which may start. Although the value of the winner runs from tf.OM to $10.1100. there is little inducement for a man to take a chance unless he has a horse of real nuality. The Whitney Memorial ; was established with the opening of the Belmont Park track, and the honors so far are all for Cood 1 and Plenty. Although training the sou of Baaatef ton was considered ti dubious question last spring. be was brought back to win Ihuu the Whitney Me inorial and the Grand National and there is goad reason to believe he will come back this spring even better than he was last year. To win the race again would put the cap sheaf on the mceesa ful career of the best steeplechaser thia country has seen in many years. The Grand National, second in value and impor- lance to the Whitney Memorial, received fori Ms entries: the International forty seven, and the New York Biirty six for the Meadow Brook Hunters' ten nominations have been made, but the number . will no doubt be considerably increased at the sec oud closing. May 11. as owners will have the op poitunity inei.ntiine to try out in public their horses holding certificates as hunter-. Ambrose Clark. Bishop Potter's son in law. who is in Luiope just now. is making preparations far an extensive Steeplechase canipaiirn at Saratoga. Mr. Clark has written the Saratoga Association to put four four year olds, for which lie paid good prices at Belmont Park last lull, in the four Sara toga Bteeptechasea, and he will, be writes, strive to have them on edge in August. The four steeplechase fixtures jM qaeattoa are the Saratoga. $5,0M added, the Shillelah. the BcTeTWyck, and the North American. The Saratoga, which was instituted last season and won by llerculoid under the silks of Charles Pfizer, is the most valuable ol this quartette. The North A merit an i- the second richest. EASTERN HORSES ARE BACKWARD. "'Lhc bersea at the Long Island tracks should lie three weeks further advanced than they are." says the Morning Telegraph. ••They are backward lie cause we have had snow and ice in the hist fortnight of February and the first two weeks of March that should have come in December and January. The seasons seem to lie changing ami many horse men are of the opinion that it would be advantageous to the horses to lop fifteen days off the front end of the regular racing season and add them to the tail end, making May I the opening day and December 1 the closing one." 1 • 3 Grand Specials $10 ONE STARTS TODAY.
