Mm h of the success that Barney Schreibcr has had ( ! and is having in racing the horses produced at his Woodlands Kami in Missouri Is due to the fact . that he is always on the alert for well bred young : aufrea likely to become gbed producers. Witii his I liookinakiiig and the maintenance of racing stables I al all of the tracks. Mr. Schreilier is an extremely i busy man. but he never neglects the farm for these ' | other things and he devotes as much time as he ' ■ an spare to the study of pedigrees. Thus he ' , annually picks up several tillies which eventually bi come nieinliers of his band of matrons, and he ■ ( usually gets tlietii cheap. It is doubtful, however. . if be ever got such a bargain as he has in Detune* i for Donna is not only exquisitely bred, but she lias already returned Mr. atehreeber a handsome profit 1 on his investment. Deaaaa is now a four-year-old and has illustrious ; ] kin on both sides of the Atlantic. She was bred in England, but was foaled in America. Her sire is , ' Donovan, winner of the Derby in England in !■ , , and she is the only daughter of that great horse I lacing in this country at the present time and one , Of the very few of his get on this side of the Atlantic ocean. Her dam is Meta. by Onondaga, out 1 of Una. by War Dance. Meta was bred by Milton ' Young and was raced for two seasons — as a two- ] year-old in 1888 by William MoC.uigaii ami as a IbuatdJ lit old in 1SS9 by Eugene Leigh. She was a winner lioth seasons. In the spring of lsfto she , was retired to the stud of J. V. Shipp at Midway. , Ky. It was there that she produced Sunny Slope. , the good race mare for which Mr. Shipp's farm is ( Bear named. From Mr. Shipp she passed to W. I'. , Norton.* of Hopkiusville. Ky.. and she gave to the , turf the good horses Austin. Kentucky and Chetah a ., (dam of Charles Flwood. winner of the Brighton «, Derby in 1808). From Mr. Norton Meta passed to \Y. C. Whitney, who bred her to Lis ak at La Belle ., Stud in Kentucky in the spring of 1900 and took her ] to England in the fall of that year. The following ■ spring' she dropped a bay lilly as the result of that | mating and it was named Metaline. After foaling Metaline. Meta was bred to Yelas-i|itez and in the spring of IMS came a brown eolt which was mimed Olivares and which Mr. Whitney . sold as a yearling for $ (i(l. He was also a winner s ' in England. In the spring of IMS Meta was bred to Donovan and was brought back to this country in the fall of that year. She was sent to La Belle Stud and there in the spring of HM, she foaled . Donna. In the early part of 1904, Mr. Whitney pasaed away and his breeding establishment was sold by auction in the fall of that year. At the sale of the yearlings Donna be-caaae the property of the Quughairea stable, otherwise Thomas Clyde and his brother, the litter BOa deceased, for $1.1imi. and at tiie sale of the mares.
