He appeared in splendid condition today and bad no trouble in cone -ding nineteen poinds to Samson. His owner had little thought of bis winning, starting the horse more io see how he would stand a race under heavy freight, than with any hope of success. His best work was one mile in 1:46, while Samson had gone the same distance in 1:42. Samson was looked upon as a posilive certainty by the best horsemen at the ti.uk. but it was a case of higher class, with Battling having the call in this regard. Buttling is eligible for the Brooklyn Handicap and his owner will point bim for the race. Senator Clay, an added starter, was backed from 4 to 1 to 7 to 5 for the Duntoii Stakes, for whim ten of the best third class three-year-olds started, tint he was never in the hunt. Puzzles For The Pimlico Public.: Ormonde's Right and Ivanhoe Furnish Two Reversals That Set 'Em Guessing. J. H. Anderson. PUZZLES FOR THE PIMLICO PUBLIC. Ormonde's Right and Ivanhoe Furnish Two Reversals that Set 'Em Guessing. Baltimore. Md., April 29.— The pnbli. got a few shocks at Pimlico this afternoon and weut home in a dazed condition. The Kciinci l Handicap, to nearly everyone's surprise, was won by Ormonde's Right, which came with his add time rush and made the others look cheap. Kl Dorado was giving away weight to everything in the race and fourteen pounds to the winner, but for all that was), made the fa. or ite. The Smithsou oil ran a splendid race. He made the pace red hot from the staat with Oraziallo and, running the latter into defeat, turned into the stretch iu the lead. He could not. however, withstand the tush of Ormonde's Bight and had to be contented with second place. Ormonde's Bight's sudden flip flap caused much tulk. Wednesday last he was beaten handily by that cheap plater Ivanhoe at a mile and forty yards at even weights. Today be comes out and simply runs away from the heat aaraea at the track. What makes the matter still more mixed is the fact that Ivanhoe ran today iu cheap company and was just a tile to get third money. Laudable too, turned quite a form somersault. Saturday he won handily, beating Etta Louise, one of the best two-yat-olds at the track. Today he was unable to finish in the money, quitting utterly in the stretch. Diamond also gave the students of form a shiver. Friday he had Preen straight in lliki, today, a 1 to 3 favorite, he showed little speed and was beaten off by S.rarfelL WilU Kara out of the jumping race it looked like a good thing for Bound Brook and he was made faworlte. The Stnlthson jumper, however, could neves.' get near Amanda H. , which led from start to finish. John Pangle has sold Sandy Creeker to C'ourtland Smith to be schooled for steeplecliasing. With a stake race and six purse races on the program for tomorrow afternoon ajid such horses as Nellie Burn. Chippewa, Veuus; Patrician. Fred Mace. Miss Cushman: Ormonde's Bight, Welbourne, The Clown; Billie Hibbs, Bilfil. Lawless; Paprika. Rocket, Mooksie: Scarfell. Prince Brutus. Belle Strome: The Cricket, Higginbothani and Midas named to start, au improvement over today's racing may reasonably be looked for. J. H. Anderson. Morales Wins From Lady Savoy.: Gerst Mare Meets with Interference--Lexington Owners Win Three Races. T. K. Lynch. MORALES WINS FROM LADY SAVOY. Gerst Mare Meets with Interference— Lexington* Owners Win Three Races. I^-xington. Ky.. April 20. — Local owners were again in evidence at the Kentucky Association course this alteruoon. The lirst three races were won by horses owned by Lexington turfmen. In the opening race, which was for tw o year olds. Clay Brother* furnished the winner in the Star Shoot colt. Nimbus, which scored easily after making ino-t of the pace. The second raw went to Topsy Robin son. from the ■tabic of Dot* Brothers. Topsy Robinson* showed a tine turn of speed, winning easily after forcing Field Lark to set a ierritic pace in the early running. One of the disappointments of the afternoon was the defeat of Lady Savoy in the feature race, a seven-fm long splint, in which William Cerst's mare was thought to out. lass the others. She ran a smart race despiie her defeat and with a better ride would undoubledly have beaten the winner. Morales. Jockey Taylor was unfortunate in meeting with a lot of interference. His mount was sharply cut off on the backstretch and on the far turn, where he attempted to go through on the hartdc, again met wilh interference. Hollow was beaten in a race he should have won. wheu Ida May led him home a length in the third race. Directly after the barrier was spuing Hollow was jumped on and Austin pulled up. When settled in his stride Hollow came on fa ,l and finished like a good colt. The Sllradiarc was again large and the new as sociatiou is much flattered at the eat took. Every indication points to the meeting being a great sue ess and already the announcement is made that a fall meeting will be given provided dates are granted by the State Racing Commission. Ovelando. Maitin Doyle's Kentucky Derby candidate, was shipped to Churchill Downs this afternoon. An effort was made to secure jockey Nicol to ride him in the big race on Monday next. Zal. William Cerst's candidate, will be shipped to Louisville tomorrow. Jockey Lee was fined $25 by the starter for breaking up a couple of starts in the third race. J. Butler was cautioned hy the judges for rough riding. A very interesting card is offered for tomorrow, and with Ancient. Ada O. Contests Are More Pleasing, Particularly to Those Who Follow the Form of Horses. Oakland. Cal., April 29.— Today's card at Oak la id was of average excellence and. attinded by ideal surroundings, produced good racing, the results being particularly satisfactory in at least four of Uncontests to that ]M.rtion of the s|K'ciilatively inclined public who rely upon past performances for their winners. 'Three favorites. Be Thankful. Corrigan and Como. and the strongly backed second choice !'.. M. Brat tain, rewarded their backers. The big throug of spectators stead agape at, the decisive victory scored by these two. Projected killings on Sir Wesley. Taylor George lad Sam Barber failed: the first and last: named for lack of competent handling. Lillian Russell was an interested spectator at the track this afternoon. There are nearly two thous and racehorses now quartered in or about the track. A. J. Levy and Al Koctiigsberger left for New York last night. Sandy was agaiu the bright pal ticular star of today's riding talent at Oaklaud with two firsts, one second, two thirds and was only lica ten three heads in the closing race. Puerl Wilkerson. who has raced a stable of horses here and in the middle west with more or less success for the past ten years, has retired from the turf and returned to his former line of baataeee, theatricals. He left for New York today where he intends to organize a traveling company. A good average program has been arranged for tomorrow and with such useful racers as Charay, Parasol, Miss Butte; Fair Fagot, Furze, Jezebel: Ethel Day, Binders. The Mist: Sugarmaid. Cloud light, George I*. McNear; Native Son, Kokonio, Blagg: Fisher Boy, Cabin and Miss Otlicioiis likely to run. the racing should be fully up to the track's ■tsaaard B. Forsiaud. Ky., April 29.— Cheiro, the eight year-old half brother to Delhi, by Horoscope— Veva, belonging to Foxhall Keene, uncoupled himself while working at the Kentucky Association course this morning and had to be destroyed. Cbeiro was never raced in this country. Mr. Keene took him to Kng-land as a yearling and raced him there as a three-year-old and as a four-year-old. He was second a few times but never won. He was a disappointment, yet Mr. Keeue thought well enough of him to bring him back to this country last fall and it was said to be his intention to run him in steeplechases. Hauteur A Bureau Horse. '•Directors of the Los Augelei Jockey Club met this morning and completed the woik of straighten hag "I1 the afTatn St lasl season at Asest," says the Los Angeles Evening News of Wednesday last. "It was a short and uneventful session, but of sufficient importance to attract CkargB Bose from Ihiieryv ill;-. The question of building anotber track for ,ie\t season was not B^SCUSaed, and one of the directors said this morning that il was hi- opinion that racing would be conducted nc-.i Beams at the old stand. Saying that he could not believe the city council would force the jockey club members to a needless alid enormous expense incident to removal across the line into the county when the location of another track would of necessity be only a short distance from the present site. "If opposition to i track in the city limils lie comes so vigorous that the meeting will lie endangered, the directors v. ill take no chances and will build a new track, but still this contingency arises no nioveineni will be beguu for a new track. "Rumors were rite last ^veek that Mauager J. W. Brooks had filled out his four years in office and that he would not be reelected. This rumor was declared to be unfounded in fact and the director who spoke noon the subject said that stories to the effect 1 hat there is friction between Brooks and other directors in the jockey club are without foundation, that their relations are harmonious and that Brooks will continue to direct the destinies of the jockey club." Free Field A Future Feature. FREE FIELD A FUTURE FEATURE. James H. MeConuiek, the owner of Clori6er, is one of the thinking men of the turf and is cou-c. n.e.l lu the welfare of racing beyond the interest commonly held by the trainers and owners of horses. With reference to the future he said a day or two ago: "The time will come when the Jockey Club will lip forced by law and sentiment to create a great 'free field.' such as exists at Epsom Downs. The public will be allowed to come into this part of the course free of charge. There should tie a grandstand there and every accommodation lookiug toward the enjoyment of the spurt. Of course, what wagering that might occur woujd be done between the bettors and independent Wets acattered about , the lawns. Thus legal interference would be avoided." ' As a matter of fact there is a good deal more in ' McCormick's suggestion than appears at first glance. , There was a time when the field was free on big days at the tracks In the south, at Louisville in par- ' tlcjular, and racing had in those days comparatively M opponents. August Belmont had erected at Bel- , ment Park an immense open enclosure which lie i proposes making free to the public some day. Willi ;?11 connection between the bookmaker ami the rac- \ ing magnates now cut off, critics are wondering whether or not the American turf is slowly evolutitr; to the basis upon which the sport rests in England today.
