I a Redgauntlet, the Favorite, Finishes Unplaced ^ — Twenty Thousand People See the Race 1 I — Governor Beckham Attends. ! I Louisville, Kv.. May 0.— The name of J. H. Woodford's Pink Star, son of L'ink Coat, winner of » Ho- American l»erbv in 1S9S. anil Mary MmOay. ,, a daughter of Pat Malloy. a sturdy horse la Ins j day and time, was enrolled ou the bag list ot j Kentucky Derby winners this afternoon. It was the tbirtv-tliird running of this Kentucky classic j and the race was one of the most truly run since PrlCC MeOrath's Avistides captured the prize in the inaugural contest in 1S75. Trailing his oppou- , ents far hack in the early stages. I'ink Star seemed , a forlorn hope, hut gradually lie began gaining on j the others and his final rush was so rapid thai the , vast concotiise of spectators were thrilled with ad- . miration. ; ' Minder rode him a sensible race, avoiding the fart early pace set by the leaders, headed by Zal, ami | alter entering the stretch, made play for supremacy , when the others were showing distress signals, lie ] wore them down and won by a comfortable margin tram Zal. Ovelando. which had been a sharp factor j in the early part of the race, retained third place , simplv because those in back of him were aaeqaal to the task of giving him any sort of an argument tor the small portion of the money after the field had traveled one mile. In the speculation Pink Star was neglected. He was the extreme outsider at IT. to 1 and lew in the big crowd conceded hint a chance. Redgaunr-let was the most fancied after the withdrawal of Arcite. Boxara and Holdfast, the latter, through some Clerical mistake, having been omitted from the entries sent out. G. J. Long and his trainer. I'. Covne. held out ho| e until the eleventh hour ihat tiie track would he in fairly good condition to start Arcite. but the mugsry atmosphere was not conducive to improving the oval and it was with keen regret that, they announced his withdrawal. He will be saved to run in the Brooklyn Handicap and his stable mate. Sir Huou, will start in the StiI. urban. It was a foregone conclusion that Redgauntlet wo. iid be t;,; iw.tjng ..o;. f. . foe race aftei ■).. h.aw rain of last night. Probably the most disap-pMrtfed man on the grounds after the race was T. P. Hayes. Redgauntlet showed to poor advantage in the going, but the owner insisted that Austin was mostly at fault in having disobeyed riding instructions. He was told to take a good hold of Redgauntlet and reserve him in the early stages. but the colt acted sluggish and Austin began urging liim hard before a half mile had been traversed and tired hitn considerably in an efrort to maintain pace with the leaders in the early stages. Had Austin restrained him alongside of Pink Star and made his run at the same time. Hayes believes that he would have taken down the major portion of the stake. W. H. Ptoll, who trains Pink Star, was jubilant. He had never weakened on the son of I'ink Coat, and added that nothing hut bad racing luck encompassed his defeat in the two Perbys at New Orleans. Darkened skies and the air surcharged with ' , dampness, as the result of many hours rain, did not lessen the ardor of the Kentuekians. It is esti mated that 20.000 were present. Many came from I Chicago, Nashville. St. I.ouis. I^xington. Memphis. Cincinnati and even New York sent a delegation. The social set was out in force. Congressman and I Mrs. Nicholas Longworth were the guests of honor. Nearly every Kentucky state orlici.ij was present and I nearly all of Kentucky's congressional representatives came. Governor Reckhain greatly enjoyed the , sport. It is doubtful if the twenty-nine layers profited I by the victory of Mike Sutton, as he was pounded steadily from an opening price of 20 to 1 to half r this figure. Rebel (Jueen. Ralbert. Colonel P»rady and i Tinker, each enjoying favoritism, were successful in their respect ive races. The last named, however, scored a lucky victory. Better bandied. Ganze would j have won. Spider Web, which began ailing last I Saturday, died this morning. Auditor is reported 1 very sick at Douglas I'ark. Fred Cook has arranged for Joe McLennan to come » liere and take the markings of the horses he intends to ship to Canada. T'ley will lie shipped some , time next week. With the consignment will go , Lawrence P. Paly, carded to start for the first t time tomorrow. It. Tucker announces that he will sell off all the horses he brought here from New York except four. An offer of $::.000 is said to have been turned down for Tim Kelly before his shipment from Nashville: he ran pearly in the fifth race. A very good program is announced for tomorrow and with such fast ones as Ditlcie, Wild violet, Sanderson: Lawrence P. Paly. R. C. Rami. Hollow: Anrship. Agnes Virginia. Excitement: Rrancas. Tom Dolan. The Minks; Lights Out. Webertiehls. New Amsterdam: Lady Ellison. Fonsoluca and Adesso among the entries, some exciting finishes are piobably in store for local patrons of the sport. J. L. Aletheuo A Stake Winner.: Will Have To Improve, However, To Take The Withers.; Good Luck Wins for Tichenor--Burlew Refuses $25,000 for Chepultepec--Roseben's Good Trial--Heavy Rain at Jamaica. ALETHEUO i A STAKE WINNER. WILL HAVE TO IMPROVE, HOWEVER, TO TAKE THE WITHERS. . ' Good Luck Wins for Tichenor — Burlew Refuses $25,000 for Chepultepec — Roseben'a * Good Trial — Heavy Rain at Jamaica. New York, May C. — Racing at Jamaica this afternoon i began under cloudy skies and over a track i made just a bit slow by the showers of the morning, I bul after four of the seven races had lieen run there i was a heavy downpour, which made the track quite muddy | and evidently upset form a bit, as two of i the liesl backed favorites of the day were beateu i in tlie sixth and seventh races. Previous to this i four favorites had won. While Senator Beckham, winner of the first, probably carried the most public i money, the stable commission made Tilekilus the ; actual favorite. Aletheuo. a candidate for the Withers Stakes, to | be run a week from next. Saturday at Belmont Park. won the Williamsburgli Handicap, tlie day's feature. Aletheuo only got out of the maiden class Saturday and. a II hough the favorite for his race today, he will have to improve over his showing if he Is to lie a factor in the Withers, providing the field is anything like high class. Oraculum could not give weight to the others. He could never get to the front and quit in the stretch. The colors of M. H. Tichenor, the Chicago turfman, were victorious for the first time this season when Good Luck won the handicap at one mile and a sixteenth. The race was scratched to three starters, and Goad Luck, a well backed choice, had his work cut out to catch Tommy Waddell, though he won easily finally. Whimsical rau well for a half, then tired, and will hardly be a starter in the Metropolitan Handicap Thursday. Roseben nad a trial for the Metropolitan at Gravesend this morales;. going a mile easily iu 1:40?. The work was all the more impressive as the son of Ben Strome travelled twenty feet out from the rail all the way to keep clear of the strip of new soil along the inside of tlie course. He is a sure starter, barring accident, and is certain to have a strong following. ' Sewell worked a mile at Belmont Park in l:41j. He was not doiug his liest and went quite wide la the stretch. His swerving was probably due to the I I fait that he did not wear blinkers. He is :i | "blinker borse" both \:. races- and at STOCK. "^ '"" It was during the Jamaica meeting last year that De Mund worked the fast half mile which enabled Newton Bennington to sell him for $45,000. His half-brother, Chepultepec, by Golden Garter, is following in his footsteps so far as fast trials are concerned and. notwithstanding that De Mund has been something of a failure, a good offer was made for him today. At Gravesend he stepped three furlongs in 34L The first furlong was in Hi, the quarter in 22£, and he was only cantering for the third furlong. Matt Allen, who saw the work, said to Pied Burlew : "You can send that fellow over to my stable without examination of any sort and I'll give j on my check for $25,000." Burlew would not entertain the offer, aud Mr. Allen remarked as be rode away. "Well. I may do better later." Chepultepec is said to be a much more rugged horse than Pe Mund and Burlew says he is the fastest horse he has ever trained. He may start in the Juvenile Saturday, but Burlew will not hurry him, as he is iu every two-year old race of importance. Waller Miller returned to the saddle and rode one winner — Robin Hood, which jumped from the plater to the overnight handicap class without any deterioration in form. Radtke was at the track also, but did not ride. Billy Garth said today that De Mund would not start in the Metroiiolitau, hut would be saved for the Toboggan. Nine carloads of horses arrived today from Pimlico, among them being Jubilee and Billie Ilibbs, the best juvenile developments of the Benning aud Piin-llco meetings. Tlie Kings County Handicap is the principal feature of tomorrow's card and should be Biarl»ed by a good race. The other races are promising and with such speedy horses as Thomas Calhoun. Beunie " Williams. Hands Around: Lord Badge, Wes, Reld-nioore: Bat Masterson. Eddie Ware. Belcast; Buttling. Philander. W. H. Carey; Royal Onyx, Ace High, Glenham; Divorcee. Tea Leaf and Glorious Betsy figuring in the entries to the various races the sport should prove of au attractive character. Mulligan Now Owns Inquisitor.: Montreal Shipping Arrangements--Hildreth's Opinion of Firestone--Gossip. I MULLIGAN NOW OWNS INQUISITOR. I Montreal Shipping Arrangements — Hildreth's Opinion of Firestone — Gossip. . , New York, May 0. — Larry Mulligan and Archie Ziniincr are now tlie owners of Inquisitor. They j bought the son of Inspector B. from the Newcastle , . Stable Saturday, paying $3,500 for him. Unless he be cosies S chronic bleeder, thev have a pretty serviceable horse in Inquisitor. He bled a bit after his last race at Jamaica, but the veterinarians who examined him reported that it was not from tlie lungs and that it was uot apt to lieoome a malady with him. The Newcastle Stable has decided to send a string to the second circuit in charge of Maurice Welsh, brother of Tom Welsh, the trainer and new partner in the establishment. Oaklawn. the colt for which August Belmont paid Will Shields 130,060, was one of the performers over bardies at the Meadow Brook Steeplechase Associa- lion's meeting at Westbury Saturday and managed to finish third to Doable o. and Baddy, but not until Bayonet went down at tlie last hurdle. The American Hxpress Company, whose shipping agents have studied ap the matter, guarantee that they can traaafer horses from any track on Long Island to Ihe stables at the Montreal course in twelve boars. Tlie rate is $190 a car by express from Grand Central Station, or $190 a car from any of tlie Long Island tracks, the frugal Long Island Railroad Charging $4 » a car for the short haul to Manhattan. With Ibis arrangement a man can ship a horse to Mon. real ior one of the stakes, spend a day there and return the following night, thus missing only one day from the local track. The getting of racehorses across the line will he attended to by the Montreal Jockey Club, so that there will lie no trouble from customs officers. If an owner wishes to ■hip his horses from here to Montreal, and thence to Buffalo, he can take them Into Canada and out ■gala In bond. It Is only a run of seven hours and a half from Montreal to Toronto and three hours and a half from there to Buffalo over one of the best double ttack railroads In Canada. Sam Hildreth brought nine horses with him when he came in from California last week. They arc Tony Faust. King Cole. Guiding Star. Rapid Water and live two year olds. It is Hildreth's intention to give these harsea SaCSI a rest as will freshen them up for the metropolitan campaign. Horse men here are much interested in Firestone and Walter Miller. Ihe two year olds Hildreth sold to President Tom Williams of the New California Jockev Club for $10,006 and $s.(KH . respectively. "They are bath good colts.'' said Hildreth to a group In the paddock at Jamaica, "and I have no doubt that Ihey will hold their own In competition with tlie best In this neck of the woods when Doctor Rowell comes this way for the summer and fall meetings. In all of his races Firestone has been (uailsf ai .,; ■ sod in impi 'esses uie as being a colt that will go on. Walter Miller's last race was in the nature of cnlirniation of his supposed quality and, in my estimation, he is a far better horse than he has evidenced in public." Harry Kuhl is here for a bit of relaxation after his busy winter as secretary at City Park, and he has been a daily visitor al Jamaica. Jockey William Hoar, who is riding in Russia. announces in a letter to a friend in this city that be was married a few weeks ago to an American ' yoang woman who has been playing with a theatrical company in that country. According to Hoar's letter, all Russia is racing mad and the sport is in a wonderfully prospeioiis condition since the close of the war with Japan. Hoar declares he is making four times the money he would receive for his time and service in this country. The Bcooklya Jockey Club has decided to add a private hospital to the equipment of its Qraveeead racing plant and the building. which is to be located at (lie corner id' King's Highway and Gravesend Avenue. ,\ ill be roadx before the fall meeting open-. It is not that the club is anticipating numerous , accidents or a plague of any sort, but such an institution appear* to be a necessity tor the reason that Ihe nearest hospital is more than two miles away. r Jockey Sam Seder, who was suspended at City Park, has made application to the American Turf • Association for reinstatement. The directors of that organization will meet at Louisville Tuesday ' and in the event of favorable action Seder will ap . ply for a license to ride here. Fred Burlew, it is understood, has offered him an engagement. Lacing folks hereabouts ate suspecting that Hart- I ford Boy *Is another Amlierjack. The latest excuse for him is that he '" lias a son- mouth. II A winter at Billy Garth's farm in Virginia has 1 Watted wonders with Qood and Plenty. Those who ■ saw the winner of two Whitney Memorials pull up lame after his success at Belmont I'ark last spring probably never expected to see this splendid steeplechaser race again, but that notion must have been knocked aallywest from such as saw the Hitchcock champion go' his one turn of the field when the _ Belmont Park cour»e was thrown opeu for jumping trials last week. Good and Plenty acquitted himself so brilliantly that it is the prediction of good judges who saw him that he will race better than a ever this year. Other impressive trials noted recently are those of T. S. Martin. Sanctus, St. Kevin. ': Grandpa. Altar. Hylas. Garrett. California King. Dr. Keith. Fallahecn. Kassi' and Agent. The last l[. named, is is generally predicted, will be one of the brilliant cross country performers of this year. •e . i . SUITS AGAINST POOLROOM KEEPERS. Cincinnati. ., May ( .- A nasty mess has been stirred up over the operation of | oolroonis in Newport and West Covington. The trouble tiegan several months ago when W. T. Shannon erected building in the suburbs of Newport with the intention of running in opposition to llulier's Garden, olierated bv George BhrUch. When Shannon got his building ap he found that he could uot get Mt vice from the interstate News Company. An esTerl to conduct the room with a private message service likewise failed. An attempt to take the inforiua tiou from the boards of the other room was folio wed by several cracked skulls and police court trials. Shannon closed the room and shortly afterward action was begun In the courts of this state against tije Interstate News Company. Ihe result ot this was an order from Attorney General BUM prohibit lag the dissemination of betting information to poolrooms in Ohio. Next. Flirlich was fined $5,000 by a jnrv in the Circuit Court. A motion was made for a new trial and the preachers and other reformers got busv with the result that George Huber was indicted for permitting his property to be used as a poolrooin. A jury found him guilty and fixed his line at $10,000. Tlie motion for a new trial in this case precipitated an unusual court, scene, when Judge Berry declared the methods of the reformers cowardly and Rev. Nelson arose with the statement that he was responsible and was in court to answer for his actions. The attorneys lor the poolroom* wauled the minister tiued for contempt of court. The judge elected to consider the retort other than contempt. This incident had a tendency to intlame others, who had up to then continued passive, against tlie rooms. Among the supposed seekers after evidence was A. K. Frick. There is a difference of opinion as to what happened to Frick, but he must feel that It was more than a plentv. since he has filed suit for $10,000 damages against J. B. Respess. who is named as the proprietor of the poolroom in West Covington and a similar Suit has been instituted against Khrlieb. _ a ': l[. •e Clay Ships To New York. CLAY SHIPS TO NEW YORK. Jockeys McLauihlin and Gilbert Are Injured — Edwin T. Fryer Surprises the Natives. Oakland, CaL, May 0.— The strike of the street railway employes iu San Francisco did not appear to affect the attendance at the local course. G(,od weather and fast track conditions prevailed. The card, which was arranged for inferidr class horses, produced excellent sport. The racing tiegan auspiciously for form players with the winning of three successive favorites— Herives, Dick Wilson and Silver Stocking. A big plunge developed on the first and last named. Edwin T. Fryer was selected as the medium of a killing in the fourtu and he made good iu convincing manner. Notwithstanding that Edwin T. Fryer had a narrow escape from going down iu the mix-up on the first turn, where Trajan was killed and jockeys McLaughlin and Giitiert were badly bruised, the Bed-well three-year old was aide to finally overhaul the leaders and pass them as if they were anvhoreu in the stretch. His victory was achieved in remarkably fast time. Harry Stover has applied to the Pacific Jockey Club for dates, for his proposed Butte meeting. The Petalnma horseman leaves tonight for Montana.
