JOHNSON BACKS ROSEBEN. SAYS "THE BIG TRAIN" WILL WIN THE METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. a Sewell Is Best Liked of the Three-Year-Olds — McCarter Furnishes Line on J. C. Core — Tanya May Be Added. New York. .May S. — At Jamaica today the prospects for the Metropolitan Handicap and the opening at Belmont Park tomorrow was of greater interest than the sport at hand, although the card was one of the best of the meeting. The probable starters for the Metropolitan were awaited with feverish ;in\ieiy. for M race has attracted more ante post interest than tin- Belmont Park fixture. There was mime surprise that qnly thirteen horses were named' and genuine disappointment that Tanya's name was not among them. The Whitney mare has been looked upon not only as a sure starter, but as a decided factor in the contest. It is considered highly probable that she will be added tomorrow with C. Koerner to ride. That the race (should t»e a sparkling contest is agreed upon by all and moreover it is a decidedly open one. At least a half dozen of the starters must be given a good chance to win. The Johnson — Sullivan — Farrell crowd are confident of success with Roselien. They make no secret of their belief that the big sprinter is better than ever before in his career. Mr. Johnson already has taken 3 to .1 for $3,000; Dick Doggett laying $0,000 to $2,000 and Billy I»u Bois. $3,000 to $1,000. The price was then cut to 11 to 5. and 2 to 1. With Tanya out, Bosel en is sure to be the opening favorite and the following of the owner and his friends will send him to the post at a short price. Sewell Is the choice of the three-year-olds, but .1. C. Core must not be overlooked. McCarter's good performance in the handicap, which closed today's card, will give his patty a good line on J. C. Core. McCarter, out for the first time, ran a smash ing race, winning at five and a half furlongs in 1:07 over a slow track and was running away from fast ones at the end. If J. C. Core is as unich Letter than McCarter. as his trainer believed him to be last year, he would seen to possess an excellent chaaee with ninety-eight l ounds to carry and Walter Miller to ride him. Daudelion was. ao -urding ta reports, given a careful preparation before he left Beiiuing and is a lit horse. Tokalon showed to be in such good eon. dition in her only outing as to bring her a big following ami ii will not be surprising to -see her or Dandelion win. Much will depend on the way the race is run. Roseben and I lie three year olds will undoubtedly make the running and if they maintain a uigh rate of s|K'ed. one of the older horses named will about get the money. From present indications the track will be in the best of condition. The weather was clear today, though a trifle cool. If the same conditions rule tomorrow a tremendous crowd will be out for the running of the race. The following are the jo-keys who have been en gaged to ride in the Metropolitan Handicap and the odds with which Sol Lichtenstein will oi eu his book tomorrow: Horse. Wt. TldlJ Odds. Roselien 121 J. McCarter in the dosing race, saving the talent from a whitewashing. Met alter is a much improved horse in appearance and look- like making a sprinter of considerable merit, though for that matter he may go any route. His party was very sweet on him today and backed him heavily. Halifax, as usual, acted meanly at the post. He showed speed, but never looked like beating McCarter. Flip Flap made her debut today and went the way of the other supimsed stars. She was a hot favorite, but 120 pounds anchored her early. With two big stake races, a probably slow, but soft track, any amount of excitement attending the decision of the Metropolitan Handicap and Meh good horses as Saraceucsi a. .lack Atkin. Horace E. : George Considinc. Seymour Beutler. Master Robert; Roseben. J. C. Core, Dandelion; Grandpa, Fallaheen. Dulcian; Pins and Needles, Dario, Muck Rake; Onatas, Keator and Quinn Brady among the entries, racing will begin at Belmont Park tomorrow with every advance indication of a monstrous attendance. Loving Cup's Latest Foal. LOVING CUP'S LATEST FOAL. St. Louis, Mo.. May S. — The good old race mare. Loving Cup, by Belvidere — Lizzette, by Hindoo, foaled a bay colt by Bannockburn last night. Loving Cup was foaled in 1895 and was raced successfully for five seasons by George W. Miller. She was a genuine bread winner and the news of the foaling of this youngster by Barney Schreiber's good stallion was received with acclaim on the local Board of Trade, where her owner is a popular member, this morning. This is Loving Cup's third foal. The first was a bay colt in 1003 by Argyle. Her two-year-old is a bay colt by Wbat-er-Lou, which Las been named Gazzolo. Condensed History Of The Metropolitan Handicap. CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE METROPOLITAN HANDICAP. The Metropolitan Handicap was first run at Morris Park in 1991 as a dash of one an one-eighth miles. It was run at that distance until 1*07, when the distance was reduced to one mile. Its first running was marked by one of the grandest races ever run. The starters were Tristan. 0. 114; Tenny. 5, 129; Clarendon. 4. NT; Riley. 4. 11!); Senorita, 5, 113; Ambulance, 3. 108, and Tournament. 4. 12."i. Here were seven great race horses and at the end of one of the fastest and most desperately contested races on record Tristan beat Tenny by half a length, with the other* lapped on in a compact bunch. The time. 1:31}, m a marvel then and stood as the record for eleven years, until Boiinibcrt ran in 1 :51 over the ligliining fast Brighton Roach track. In 1S97 Voter showed that a three year»old could win the Metropolitan, and his example was followed in the two following years by Rowling Rrook and Filigrane. No more sensational feature has attended its decision In any year than Race King's dead heat with Sysonby in 1996. The great colt was not then thoroughly wound up. A month later he could have given Race King forty pounds and a beating without being extended. Its fastest record as a mile dash was when the splendid filly Gunfire won from Old Finland and I,ux Casta in 1903. but the l:38j} of that race will almost surely lie reduced before the race has beea run many limes over the fast Belmont Park track. May 8.— The California Jockey Club stewards are following up a lead that promises developments in the case of the banished negro jockey Johnstone Hunter. Bedford's remarkable race today in the handicap at a mile and an eightl i- vincing them that the horse was lulled to Sanlara last Saturday. The stewards immediately started an investigation which promises to reveal the identity of the manipulators of the three recently suspended jockeys, Butwell, Smith and Hunter. They are also probing into the running of Woolina and Tonic. In the opinion of the officials both of these racers received backing not warranted by past performances. Gossiper II's race today will also be investigated. Touhey's mare ran unplaced in the fifth. backed at a short price, thickly swathed in bandages on all four legs. The suddenly rejuvenated Misty's Pride at 20 to 1 towroped her opponents in this race. The biggest upset of the day occurred in the feature race when Logistilla at odds-on finished absolutely list and beaten off In a field of four starters. The improved J. C. Clem at 3 to 1 won in the fast time of 1:524;. Half of the card was captured by favorites. A majority of the finishes were close and exciting and the racing was excellent. Thomas II. Williams has sold Hilo de Oro to II. . ;. Bedwell. J. Arm strong is now the owner of Kdith James. Jockey A. Brown left for Louisville today to ride for Barney Schrciher at the Kentucky tracks. Mr. Trevelyan is now at his home in Charlottesville. Va., and correspondence with him as to an engagement here hrs been opened. Phil Finch Himself Again.: Wins The Feature Race From Ralbert At Churchill Downs.; Will Be Pointed for the Rich Queen City Handicap at Latonia--Heavy Rain Mars the Sport. J. L. Dempsey. ■ PHIL FINCH HIMSELF AGAIN. WINS THE FEATURE RACE FROM RAL-BERT AT CHURCHILL DOWNS. Will Be Pointed for the Rich Queen City Handicap at Latonia — Heavy Rain Mars the Sport. Louisville. Ky., May 8. — More disagreeable weather could not be imagined than that which prevailed at Churchill Downs this afternoon. A cloudburst struck the course just before the first race and it soon converted the track ino a canal of mud. The attendance consequently was light. At times a heavy fog enveloped the course, making it hard to distinguish colors. Phil Finch, rejuvenated after his break down last winter at New Orleans, captured the feature race, the handicap at seven furlongs, in handy fashion from the good horses Ralhert. Beau Brummel. Miltiades and three others. Phil Finch was considered almost a certainty by his connections and Captain Jim Williams says he won the biggest bet of his career on the horse. Followers of jockey Lee were in clover, as this promising rider landed Merrifield. Moiiuette and Re-bounder winners in their respective races, and they were at long odds. Not a favorite managed to finish first, but as all the winners were accorded fair support, it is doubtful if the layers had much the best, of the speculative argument. The two l est finishes were those of the first and third races. Quagga being lucky in the opening dash to slip through in time to beat out Delia Thorpe, and Demo, despite Skirvin's bad ride, managed to beat out Marmorean. Both the beaten horses were ridden by G. Swain and with a little more vigilance on his part, they might have scored. Tim Kelly, which finished third in the fifth race, pulled up lame. Jockey Trueman, while riding Katherine Murphy in the second race, was struck in the eye with a lump of dirt, almost blinding him and causing him to discontinue riding out his engagements. Sam. Most suspended his book on account of heavy losses sustained on the opening day. Phil Finch will be pointed for the Queen City Handicap and later shipped east. The much-talked of Lawrence P. Daley, owned by Fred C * k, made his debut today, hut showed to disadvantage on account of the muddy track. There will tie numerous departures next week for Toronto to paiti ipate in the racing on Canadian tracks. Fully six hundred horses will be shipped there Croat then parts. Secretary Davis announced the weights for the Clark Handicap to be run next Saturday. Of Hie titty two eligihles to start, John L. Inglis is given the highest faafeet, IIS. Hyperion II. and Colonel .Inn Douglas are next in favor with 110, Alma Du-foar, 112. Lady Savoy. 111. Braucas. 110. The Minks, llo. Pink Star and Peter Sterling each 108, come next in order. The minimum weight. s7. is allotcd to Judge Burroughs. Bottles and Carl Gray. A heavy track will be the order tomorrow, but good mud runners abound iu the various races and with such good ones as Alsono, Dr. Spruill. Queen Caroline; Bosom Friend. Extry. Relapse; Knight of rraahoe, All Ablaze. Spendthrift Helen; Morales, Fleming. The Englishman: J. Fd Grillo, Fred Prles-uieyer. Magic; Clifton Forge, Excitement and Bitter Brown among the entries, the racing promises to be attractive and closely contested. J. L. Dempsey. Page 6 Six More Stakes For Brighton.: De Mund to Start in the Toboggan--A Line on some of the Good Horses. SIX MORE STAKES FOR BRIGHTON. De Mund to Start in the Toboggan — A Line on Some of the Good Horses. New York. May S.— President C. J. Fitzgerald, of the Brighton Beach Racing Association, announces mx stakes supplementary to those which closed on January 2. Three of them are to be run at the Mimnier meeting and the others in the fall. In four of these stakes, the Sunshine and I'ndergrad-uate. for two-year-olds; the Mercury Handicap, for all ages, and the Chantilly Steeplechase. Brightoi has taken a step that will meet with the approval of horsemen. While the money added to the-e slakes by the association remain-; M large as it wis in other years, the subscription fees have been reduced from $50 to $25 and the forfeit fee is only $lt» — no larger than the subscription fee to au overnight entry. These stakes, the nomination to which close on June 1, include the Triumph Stakes, which has $.r . KX). and tiie historic Pliarsalie plate, valued at B3.MM, added to it. The Triumph, which is for two year-olds, at a mile, coming as it does at a -mm son when the crack colts and (illies are at their best, is confirmatory of class and championship, and therefore appeals peculiarly to sportsmen owners. The Westchester Racing Association has ordered printed just 40.()00 programs for tomorrow. On Carter Handicap day the supply at Aqueduct ran short. The Belmont Park people are providing against such a contingency on Metropolitan Handicap day. There is not a single big star plunger in the b.tting ring this year so far. With the passing of "Joe*" Yeager, "Pittsburg Phil." "Whitey" Lang don, "Jack" McDonald, Riley Grannan, Arthur Featheistone and Newton Bennington, there is scarce I single member of the old guard left on the Mne. •Davy" Johnson is the last of the money prodigals. He still can set it in on occasion. Trainer Weir timed Roncben's Monday mile at Cravesend in l:40ij and not 1 ::;! ]!, as some dispatches bail it. The fractious were in 12. 23, ,'{.". \7'_. 1:01, 1:14, 1:27. l:40jj. It was cracking work easily done, and the furlongs shown were in 12, 11. 12. M)l, TO, IS, It, TO. If the field is large. as is probable, the bay horse is likely to he much aided by his early speed and Martin, as was Dr. Gardner in the Excelsior. Go Between is in fine condition. His last work was 111 impressive seven furlongs in 1 :20. and he is ready for the Metropolitan, though a doubtful starter. Angler is at Suecpshead Bay, about ready for the races. Glorifier was not beaten up so badly as reported in the rough work of the Excelsior. He worked a good mile — in 1:4:; — at Sheepshead Bay yesterday and is ready to race and wiu again in the handicap division. Lady Amelia looks well and is about fit. She is at Sheepsliead and working halves in 48 seconds at the asking. She will appear and be ready to win at Belmont Park. Tom McDowell's shifty mares. King's Daughter and Lady Anne are on edge. Both will be worth attention in the Belmont Park s*priiits. Banner, in the same stable, seems to have almost as much speed as the other two males. De Mund is now being pointed for the Toboggan Handicap and shows great and effortless speed in his training. Sewell worked a mile at Sheepsliead Bay Mondav without blinkers and was swerving in the Wretch to finish in 1:42, though he came home with something to spare. So far in his races Oraculum has shown little or no courage, though he is a colt of great si eed. Whimsical, in Monday's race, showed no improvement and could not be considered as a factor for the Metropolitan Handicap. The confidence of the stable would seem to suggest possible improvement that did not work out. and she is almost sure to do better with another week or two. Jamaica Racing Statistics. Auditor, the six-year old bay son of Esher — Alec tis. whfteh died at Louisville Tuesday, gave promise of Iiecoming a great racehorse in his two-year-old form. His second start was at Harlem on June S. 1903 and he won. Robert Tucker was his trainer during the year and Helgesen and Wonderly were the jockeys who seemed to get the best efforts out of him, although George Odom, Dominick, Tommy Burus. ReifT, Fischer and other jockeys rode him at differeut times. He was only sent to the post three times as a three-year-old. II. Z. De Annan bought him from Captain Brown at Jamaica, paying $2,500 for him, but only raced him twice when his former owner bought him back at private sale. Riddle kept Auditor some months when he sold him to Jake Greenburg. who won several races with him when Riddle took him back during the Latonia meeting, finally selling him to his former trainer, Robert Tucker, and he raced for the first time in Tucker'.s name there October 26, last.
