May 0.— The stake events for the summer meeting of the Buffalo Racing ananrJa-tion at Kenilworth Park. June 1"» to July 20. have tilled beyond the expectations of Joseph A. Murphy, who is the active manager of the plant this year and who will l e in the stand as presiding jadgK. "We are going to have an excellent average antra in the sixteen stake events," said Mr. Murphy today, "and what pleases me most of all is that the best stables in this country and Canada are lepra sented this season. Stake entries made at this season of the year are especially encouraging when they come in any numbers, as they have done with us. You see. it is but a month from racing time, and the prospect is that owners and trainers have well tried out the material in their stables ami thus, about tilty per cent, of the horses nominated for the Butlalo events can be counted on to make their appearance at the post.'' The Buffalo Derby promises lo find a big field of starters, as the entries bid fair to gn aver thirty and all well tried three-year-old colts, fillies and geldings. The Canadian contingent will be especially strong, as the Seagram. Dyiuent and Mao kt-nzie stables, the principal racing establishments anoss the border line, will all be represented. Mr. Seagram has made a liberal 'entry for the Butlalo events from which he was absent last season. It is probable that he will send more than one to the post for the Butlalo Derby, including his cra'-k Assemblyman, with which he expects to take down the King's Plate. The Dynieut stable has a good one in Temmeraire. with another string to its bow and the Mackenzies have that good one, Tourenne. to hear from. The owner of Belmere. last year's winner, Fred Burlew, will make another try for the Buffalo prize, and he will also send a stable to be raced through the meeting. Buffalo has some representatives in d*e Derby, and Teuiaeco, winner of the California Derby, is iu the local affair, and other of the cracks of the age which have been and are now raeing through the southwest, will he found nominated when the entries are made public. Yet they were so badly shaken up that they were forced to cancel other engagements for tiie afternoon. Potter and Fleming were the only winning favorites. Potter spreadcagled his opponents in the first race and won cantering. Trenola, in the closing race, was the surprise of the day. Ue won easily at 40 to 1, but pulled up very lame. May 9. — The stewards of the California Jockey Club are after the local raciug crooks and they announced several preliminary millings at the close of today's raciug. The Apple-gate & Cot ion stable is suspended for thirty days for running ihe horses Woolma and Tonic in a manner detrimental to the best interests of the turf. This ruling applies particularly to Willtaiii ( otton and all horses controlled by him. His partner, \V. 10. Applegate. at present in Kentucky, Is not implicated. A second and more severe ruling was the suspension for the same period and a denial of track privileges of A. L. Farrell. trainer of Cloudlight, which was defeated last Tuesday under suspicious .irciimstances and when a heavily supported public favorite. Keogh. who had the mount on that occasion, declared that Farrell was not sanguine of ( loudliglit's chances and had specially warned him not to expect too much of the mare. From twenty to thirty witnesses are being interrogated daily and the results iu the case of jockey Hunter and his connections will not be known for several days. One of the stewards said that they (hand out that several bookmakers may have l»een implicated. This was another disastrous day of racing for the speculatively inclined. Not a single favorite was able to catch the judges' eyes. The weather was ideal for the siiort. The track was fast. The t etting was brisk and the usual big attendance was iu evidence. W. F. Applet;ate's three-year-old filly, Kinders. broke dawn hopelessly at the head of the stretch tu Hie concluding race and was with difficulty led off the track.
