She showed a good Hight of speed for three-quarters of a mile, and then tired, finishing far in the rear. Lillie Turner, ridden by .T. Lee, was rated along behind tlie fast leaders for the first mile. She turned wide entering tlie stretch and appeared hopelessly beaten, but she responded to Lee's urging and gradually wore down Miss Alert and Miss Lida, which were battling stride for stride. At the sixteenth post she drew level with the leaders and forged ahead in the last seventy yards to win by three parts of a length. Lillie Turner was favorite and her victory was well received. Tsara and A'Iperine put up a determined struggle in t lie second race for nearly all of the three-quarters of a. mile. Near the end A'iperine attempted to savage Tsara and jockey Lee was forced to use his whip to fight her off. Put for A'iperine' s viciousness she would have won. Sievier, who was ruled oil" the turf in May 1901, lias been reinstated by tli( Jockey Club and will soon form another wing stable. Sievier was ruled off in consequence, it was thought at the time, of tlie testimony given against him in his libel suit against Sir James Duke, who bad publicly referred to Sievier as a card sharper, and made other charges, and had asserted that he bad caused his mare Sceptre to be "pulled" for the Derby. The jury decided that Duke had not committed any libel and mulcted Sievier in the costs of the suit. Pi the month following the trial of this case, which took place in May, Sievier was arrested on a charge of perjury in connection with it, but was acquitted on his trial. Mooksie Unseats Rider When Toronto Steeplechase Is Apparently Hers. PnlTaln, X. Y July 2. This was Country Club day at Kenilworth and members of that organization were guests of the P.uffalo Pacing Association. At the conclusion of the regular program a race for polo ponies was run and it was won by Gertrude, ridden by AV. Seward Cary. The Toronto Steeplechase was marred by mishaps. Pierre Lorillard's Mooksie, the heavily backed favorite, came to grief at the sixteenth jump. She was crossed by Dulcian and in landing stumbled and unseated her rider. Mooksie, at the time appeared to have the others soundly beaten. Kodrock found Dulcian a hard horse to, control. Directly after taking tlie last jump Dulcian bolted and his rider was forced to pull up to keep him from going over against the outside fence. AVhen he got bis mount straightened out. again, Pock Storm was right on top of him and in the run on the Hat, Rock Storm overhauled and passed Dulcian, winning easily by a couple of lengths. Cardigan unseated his rider at tlie ninth jump. Jockey Xicol rode the first two winners, Aristotle and Clmlita. On Aristotle Xicol had to put up one of his strongost finishes to get the colt to last long enough to beat Oroba out a short head, but on Clmlita he had only to sit still and allow the filly to go along about her business. Jockey Lloyd, who rode Painty Dame in the Latonia Oaks today, is expected to return by Thursday. The entry of Posing was ordered refused for the remainder of the meeting, as the mare has become a confirmed rogue at the post, refusing to leave the barrier. Henry F. Morris, the Jockey Club's representative, was absent from his post at Kenilworth this afternoon. He was called to Xew York to attend a meeting of tlie National Steeplechase and Hunt Association. His place was taken by Col. Kobert II. Xeville. Gerst Threatens to Sell Out GERST THREATENS TO SELL OUT. William Gerst, the father-in-law of George Holle and the real owner of the horses racing in the latter's name at Latonia, was miffed at the disqualification of Parisian Model in the third race Monday and is quoted by the Cincinnati Enquirer as having said: "It appears to me that I must do one of two things, sell my horses or go away from here. On Saturday my filly Colloquy was fouled in the stake race and no attention was paid to it. Now my lilly is said to be at fault and the race is. promptly taken away. Killings should be consistent. At that 1 had my mind made up to cut down my turf interests, which are entirely two big a load to carry. I went into racing for the sport that was in it. "It was a recreation for me for a while, but it grew too fast. I have too many horses and am under too big an expense to continue it on the present scale. My trainer, AVill MePaniel, wired me today about two colts he would like to buy in the east, but 1 answered him that I was not in the market for more horses." Air. Gerst has a big farm at Xashville and in addition to the stable at Latonia trained by AV. L. Lewis and racing in Mr. Holle's name, he has one string in Xew York in charge of AVill McDaniel and another, principally jumpers, on the Northern Circuit in charge of T. L. Pierce. The combined winnings of these three stables for the first six months of this year was fifty-four firsts, fifty-five seconds and thirty-five thirds and .$20,S25. Of this amount ?1S,020 is credited to the Holle stable, which has won thirty-seven races, thirty-eight seconds and twenty-two thirds. W. H. Daniel is Working Well W. H. DANIEL IS WORKING WELL. New York, July 2. AV. II. Daniel has no engagements at Shcepshead Pay, but he is eligible to tlie Prlghton Mile, to be run next AVednesday and the Prighton Handicap, to be run the following Saturday, and work-watchers expect him to make his three-year-old debut in one of these races. Ho is doing all that trainer Henry McDaniel is asking of him at Shcepshead Bay and will be ready when he comes out under the colors of E. S. P.urke. Butte Track Twenty Years Old BUTTE TRACK TWENTY YEARS OLD. The track at Pntte, Montana, which will open tomorrow for forty days' racing under the management of Harry Stover, was built by Lee Mantle and his associates twenty years ago. Twelve years ago the track passed to Marcus Paly, who gave It a splendid equipment. In the time of Mr. Daly the track was managed by Ed. A. Tipton, and the miners of that country enjoyed better racing than they had ever hoped to see.. After the death of Mr. Paly the track changed hahids several times. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Ed Trotter now has first call on jockey Morcland at AVindsor. Beckon is getting ready for tlie Vernal Stakes at Sheepshead Pay Saturday, and work-watchers in the east say she will give a good account of herself. Tlie distance of each of the four races won by Thistle Po this year rtis one mile and seventy yards, and the finishes were drives wherein his winning margin was never more than half a length. "Red" Walker is Canadian born and his greatest ambition Is to breed a winner of the King's Plate at Toronto. Last summer he bought a farm near Fort Erie and has there now several thoroughbred mares. j Three Favorites Win at Windsor: Goldblatt Swaps Matabon for Golden Mineral Steeplechase Jockey O'connor Injured THREE FAVORITES WIN AT WINDSOR. Goldblatt Swaps Matabon for Golden Mineral Steeplechase Jockey O'Connor Injured. Detroit, Mich., July 2. A free gate for ladies served to attract a large crowd to AVindsor today. The weather was cool and the track fast. Three favorites, Prolific, Sliineon and Light Note, won. Winners of the other races were second choices, with the exception of Tomnabat in the second. He won easily at 10 to 1. Steeplechase jockey O'Connor, one of the best cross-country riders here, suffered a fracture of the collarbone this morning. Bed Pobe fell with him while schooling through the field. Jockey Gaugel, who was slightly injured by his fell in the last race yesterday, cancelled his engagements for the day. J. V. Strode, to whom the boy is under contract, says he would give him a rest for a week or two. Mose Goldblatt bought Matabon from AVilliam Gerst for $1,300 last week, and this morning traded him to P. JL Civill for Golden Mineral. Civill shipped Halliard to BufTalo this afternoon' to start in the Independence Stakes at Kenilworth Thursday. It is expected that La Pucelle will come here from Buffalo to run in the Pontchartrain Stakes Thursday. Breeding Bureau's Great Work: Forty-Four Stallions Now in Service Have Been Visited by 2,000 Mares BREEDING BUREAU'S GREAT WORK. Forty-Four Stallions Now in Service Have Been Visited by 2,000 Mares. Xew York, July 2. Some definite idea of the results of the first year's work of the Breeding Bureau may be gained before a great while. Already a great many foals have been reported, but as the breeding of horses of the class covered by the Bureau's scheme is carried on until very late in the season actual results are not yet obtainable. In 1000 the first stallion was shipped to his keeper on May "0 and reports to December 31 showed that the thirty stallions placed had received aliout 500 matrons, and now (up to June 1) reports show that the forty-four stallions have been patronized by almost 2,000 mares, the property of farmers of the state or Xew York, so the good work is well begun. Tlie result or almost 2,000 half-bred colts or fillies in Xew York state will be felt for a lifetime, even should the Breeding Bureau cease its operations today, of which there is no likelihood. The Breeding Bureau is in its infancy, and while the work must of a necessity go a little slower (the supply of available stallions being, to a certain extent, limited), before the present breeding season is over fully fifty stallions will have been placed, and by the end of the year fully sixty, which will mean a stallion for every county in the state. The fact that the Breeding Bureau was created late in 1900 makes it impossible, to even correctly estimate who will be the lucky keepers in receiving the prizes of $150 to first, .$100 to second and 50 to third, offered to the keeper of the stallion which lias the most foals in 1907, but a close watch is being kept and the awards will be promptly made. The special prizes for best foal (as shown at foot of dam) by Don de Oro and Margrave, as offered by August Belmont, chairman of the Jockey Club, who donated both the above horses, will be offered through the agricultural societies of Broome and Livingston counties, and next year the Breeding Bureau will offer three special prizes in each county of the state for the best yearling as sired by the stallions of the Breeding Bureau of Tlie Jockey Club. The following horses have been newly placed or changed by the Breeding Bureau of The Jockey Club during the year 1907: Saccharometer, by The Judge Sacharisa; M. A. Lain, AVestown, Orange Countv. Some of the best local fillies hooked up with the New Orleans wonder, but if her rivals had friends they did not disclose their identity in the betting. It did not turn out the hollow victory that the spectators anticipated, for during the major portion ot the running the favorite's chances appeared decidedly slim. It was a big betting day, as the card seemed made to order for speculation. The steeplechase proved an easy victory for Phantom. Commodore Fontaine, Larone and Flying Machine fell. Flying Machine stepped on jockey Stringer, but it was found after he had been restored to consciousness that he was not injured. Keep Moving, the filly vhich carried the colors of F. R. Hitchcock in the third race is a beauty. She was much admired by James R. Kecne and others during the saddling process. George S. Davis, Bad News, Blandy, Cederstrome, Don Hamilton, Halifax, Jubilee, Sir Lynnewood, They're Off and Tony Faust have been placed on the schooling list by the starter. After making inquiries this morning of the ovners of candidates for the Decoration Handicap, which is to lie the feature of Thursday's card at Latonia, Racing, Secretary Lyman Davis said: "I think we will have about fifteen starters in the Decoration Handicap. J. C. Milam was highly pleased witli Couvolo's race, and McIIvain ran a good race under bad handling. Mcll-vain is a good horse when ready. Beau Brumntel also ran a good race Monday after getting away poorly. I don't think any one would want a better field than Envoy, Lexoline, Still Alarm, Tlie Minks, Phil Finch, Pasadena, Convolo, Plantland, Beau Brummel, McIIvain, Mike Sutton, Harry Scott, Old Honesty and Princess Orna. If all these would start it will be a highly interesting contest." The distance is one mile and a sixteenth and Pasadena has the top impost of 114 pounds. One Reason for Jockey Famine ONE REASON FOR JOCKEY FAMINE. When one takes 'the time to critically analyze the running of the races it Is found that all the talk about jockey famine is largely the fault of the owners and trainers themselves. There are several riders who have shown good horsemanship in the saddle every time they have been put up, but they seem unable to secure mounts, except in their own stables. Owners are prone to look to one of the top notch riders, and when they are not avail-aide they take aii inexperienced exercise boy in their own employ. At the same time there arc many to bo found that do not have mounts enough to make the public familiar with their names. Brunner, the lad who has recently been piloting Go Between in his races, is one of the jockeys that has thus far escaped any outside engagement. In riding Go Between he has demonstrated that he is capable of handling the Meddler horse with as good, or better results, than a Miller, Martin, Dugan, Notter, Mountain, or, in fact, any ot the others that are at present in such ready demand. It may be that Brunner is familiar with the horse, but there is no reason why he should not give a good account of himself on any oilier if the opportunity came. W. Dugan rode as snug a race on Nealon In the Suburban as has been seen this season, though be Is very seldom engaged for outside mounts, nis handling of Electioneer in the Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes was all that could have been asked, though tin; Voter colt was unable to take down any part of the purse. John IlennosAy, who rode for Will Shields, found so little to do in the east that be is now piloting the Shields horses in the west. Had he been afforded riding chances there is little doubt but he would have been a valuable addition to the riding ranks. Beckman has recently earned his way into some recognition, but it was only because he was riding for a stable that had frequent entries and his handling of the horses of Frank J. Farrell finally attracted attention of other trainers. Guy Burns is a lightweight who is entitled to many more mounts than come bis wav, and both Lowe and Brussel would do better if they were In more frequent demand. Knapp, who steered Frank Gill to victory Saturday, is not kept as busv as a rider of his ability should be, and Harty is a lightweight that has been showing a fair amount of skill in the saddle. There are several others that cannot be called to mind at present, but. the fact remains that there are always better boys idle than many of those that are riding. New York Morning Telegraph.
