Cairngorm's Splendid Performance Keep Moving Gets Best of Start Dubois and Durnell at Outs Two "Boosts." New York, July 11. T. C. McDowell's Lady Anne, the four-year-old iilly liy Kinley Mack Bracegirdle, captured the Jamaica Stakes at Brighton Beach today from eight tried siirintevs. including .liicoldte, lied Kiver and Clare Uussell. The winner led tin? entire distance of six furlongs and established a new track record of 1:113, the previous record being 1:11!, held jointly hy Bose-Iipii, Comedienne, l'.elle Strouic and Lux Casta. Lady Anne was admirably ridden by Walter Miller, got n way in front, proceeded to set a fast pace and aided by a snug stretch run, her ultimate victory was never in serious jeopardy, rnougn Jacobite was only a head behind her at the finish. Track conditions considered, the rain of the early morning having left it somewhat soft and uncertain, it was one of the most notable achievements of the American turf. The Jamaica was a selling stakes and the owner was called upon to protect, his lilly to the tune of $l,r0.1 over and above the entered selling price of $1.1)00, but he could well aJTord to do so. as he had backed her stanchly at tlie liberal odd of I to 1. Cairngorm qualified splendidly for tlie coming Brighton Handicap when he carried 120 pounds to victory in the mile and a sixteenth handicap. lie was never extended lieyound a common canter and defeated horses of good caliber, including Far West, as if they were cheap selling platers. Tlie Paget horse was ridden by Miller and seemed hopelessly surrounded and pocketed during the third quarter of the running. Experts marvelled at the jockey's skill and daring in extricating Ids mount from his dangerous position and there was much cheering when Cairngorm Hashed through the narrow opening . on the Inside and came home practically alone. Far West was an equal choice in the betting with Cairngorm at the close and carried the wise money. Tlie public, however, were down on the winner at S to r.. Itncing began with a victory for F. It. Hitchcock's beautiful filly. Keep Moving. She ran away from such good ones as The Squire, Gene Bussell, Bellwether and Castlewood as if they had been anchored. An excuse! was forthcoming for these distinguished trailers, however, in that the start was one of the worst seen in the east this season. The ring laid as good as 10 to 1 against the winner, and it is rumored that J. K. Madden scored a big coup. Question Mark, virtually left at the post, closed a big gap, but when Sandy realized the futility of further efforts with Lakeland's colt, he jerked him up so sharply that he nearly went down. There were two disqualifications, and both affected horses which finished second. Hed Leaf was the sufferer in Hie second race and Sanguine u the third. Joe Xenlon at prohibitive odds was the first winning favorite that came to the relief of the form followers. C. E. Durnell was forced to pay the big bonus of $2,00:; to retain the good youngster. William Dubois was tlie unexpected bidder, going to $",000 before he stopped.. Durnell and Dubois have just bad a falling out over the mare Lotus, which tlie former handled on a lease arrangement last winter. This was further aggravated when Durnell insisted that there had been an understanding that lie was to have a joint hid with Dubois for Charles Edward at the recent Paget-Thomas sale. When Durnell tendered half of the price to Dubois, he refused to accept it declaring that he was the sole owner as well as bidder. Lady Karma won the sixth race, running unbacked by her owner Dave Gideon and The Wrestler accounted for the 'closing race. When the track is so fast that such a horse can gallop three-quarters of a mile in l:12i, the smashing of records is to be expected and should not be surprising. In connection with the disqualification of It oil Leaf, jockey Scoville was set down for six days by the stewards. They held Garner, the rider of Sanguine, blameless. The Pinkcrtons have been kept on tho jump during the last two days trying to locate a gang of sharpers who bave been operating the old dodge of collecting bets, with forged tickets at Kenilworth. Several bookmakers were caught yesterday and this afternoon two bu'jilers suspected of being in collusion with the film flam men were ejected from the grounds. I Rainy, Muddy, Gloomy at Latonia: Joe Moser Gives Hanbridge His First Defeat-Mike Sutton Wins Handicap RAINY, MUDDY, GLOOMY AT LATONIA. Joe Moser Gives Hanbridge His First Defeat Mike Sutton Wins Handicap. Cincinnati, 0., July 11. The weather and racing at Latonia today was in keeping with the gloomy outlook for horsemen here. Italn began to fall about 11 o'clock and continued ail afternoon. The track was a sea of mud. The attendance was the lightest of the meeting. Not a favorite won. Joe Moser, which defeated the Hollo entry, Hanbridge and Evelyn S. in tho third race, was a second choice, and the best-backed winner of the day. Some had a doubt as to Joe Moser's ability to travel fast in the mud, but he settled all that decisively. Breaking off well he carried his opponents along at a good pace from start to finish, winning handily from Hanbridge, which ran a good rare considering tlie weight concession he was asked to make. It was Ilanbridge's first defeat in live starts. McIIvain. Cablegram and Carlhage declined the issue in the mile handicap. Lillie Turner was strongly fancied on the strength of her Oaks victory and belief that the track would suit her, hut there was nothing to tlie race but Mike Sutton. He outpaced his oponents at all stages and won as his rider pleased. The liberal price about him was due to the fact that he wore bar plates and carried four and one-half pounds overweight. Lady Vie, winner of the opening race, exhibited exceptional mud form. Her victory was unexpected, as was that also of Boil Thistle, neither of these outsiders having any well-defined support. Camilla's splendid mud running qualities aided ber to beat the poorly ridden Aguolo in a hard drive. Sultry easily disposed of his company in the last. John J. Murphy, who purchased Phil Finch out of the .Merchants' Stake, denied tht C. K. Ellison lias an interest in tlie horse. Bannock Dob, the two-year-old bay colt by Ban-nockburn Sister to Unnlo Bob, which is carded to make his debut in the second race at Latonia tomorrow, is a half-brother to Earl Rogers, Angleta and Dewey. He was bred hy Barney Schreiber at his Woodlands Farm in Missouri. Joe McCarthy, the bay colt by McDowell Plot, which is carded to make his first start in the same race, is a half-brother to Succeed, now a four-year-old and winner of seven races. Succeed was foaled in England and was brought to this country at the foot of her dam In 190I5. Joe McCarthy is the lirst foal dropped by Plot in America. Plot is now in the Aunita Stud in Virginia. Mortiboy Wins Easily at Windsor: Muddy Track is to His Liking-Many Requests for Stalls at Fort Erie MORTI BOY WINS EASILY AT WINDSOR. Muddy Track Is to His Liking Many Requests for Stalls at Fort' Erie. Detroit, Mich., July 11. The steady downpour of rain last night and showers today left the Windsor track fetlock deep in mud. The attendance was light, only the regulars were out. The card was made up entirely of selling races and there were many scratches. Only two favorites won Mortihoy in the third and Bye Bye II. in the fifth. Mortihoy, despite the rumors that he was not lit, and his owner's statement that he was far from ready, won as his rider pleased. Secretary Parmer has been tlooded with messages, since the announcement of the closing of Latonia, for sthble room at Fort Erie. Tlie stable accommodations at Fort Erie are limited and many owners will have to be turned-down. Records for Six Furlongs RECORDS FOR SIX FURLONGS. Lady Anne's three-quarters of a mile in 1:118 in the Jamaica Stakes at Brighton Beach yesterday is the fastest time made at that distance this year, is--within one-fifth of a second of Uoseben's American record, made when be was a four-year-old with 1 17 pounds at Belmont Park, October 0, 100.1, and is a new track record for Brighton Beach. The previous record. at this track was 1:12, held jointly by Lux Casta (:.), Ill, July 2::, 1002; Belle Strome (2), 109, September 1.'5, 1004, Comedienne (:5), 114, July 2(5. 1000 and Boseben (), 110, July 10, 1007. There are four other tracks having 1:11 as records for three-quarters of a mile, as follows: Washington Park, Dick Welles (!5), 100, .Tune.. '50, 100-5; Worth, Ivan the Terrible (2), 02, October 27, 1904; Woodbine, Diamond (4), 114, May 24, 1900 and Fort Erie, Charlie Eastman (:5), 112, August 10, 1900. To Improve Overland Park TO IMPROVE OVERLAND PARK. De.nver, Col., July 11. The success of the meeting now drawing to a close at Overland Park has encouraged the management to the extent that Secretary Wahlgreen makes the announcement that the plant will be remodeled and larger purses will be offered next year. The attendance has been double that of last year and there has been an average of .about twenty books on. Last year there were about "00 horses here. This year there are about 700. There is no question as to the popularity of racing here and the future is bright. No Poolroom for Houston NO POOLROOM FOR HOUSTON. Aristotle Wins Mohawk Stakes: Chulita, Conceding Much Weight, Finishes Third, with Etta Louise Second ARISTOTLE WINS MOHAWK STAKES. Chulita, Conceding Much Weight, Finishes Third, with Etta Louise Second. Buffalo, X. Y., July 11. The Mohawk Stakes was the feature of the card that was run in the rain nt Kenilworth this afternoon. With Clell Turney, Moxey Mead and Maycella added, a field of nine went to the post in the stake. The result proved a complete surprise, Aristotle beating out Etta Louise and Chulita. Chulita, fresh from ber victory in the Cincinnati Trophy at Latonia, was a heavily backed favorite. She was ridden by Xicol and although beaten was not disgraced, as she was giving weight to everything in the race. The change in track conditions was also against her. Under the circumstances she ran a really remarkable race. In the early running Etta Louise rushed away from the others and opened up a lead of three lengths, which she retained until making tlie turn into the stretch, where she bore out and lost a couple of lengths. Cliulita closed on the leader with a rush, and for a time it seemed as if she might win. In the final furlong, however, lioth the leaders tired and Aristotle, coming fast next to tlx? rail, got up and won, going away by a length. The conditions of tlie Mohawk Stakes called for a distance of four and a half furlongs. This was not in conformity with the rules of the Jockey Club, which forbids races of a shorter distance than five furlongs after July 1. It was necessary for the management to obtain the consent of the horsemen starting in the race to make the distance five-eighths of a mile. Jlad they been unable to do this the stake would have been declared off. It would have been an awkward predicament bad the race been run at four and a half furlongs. State Racing Commissioners Say Best Interests of the Sport Demand that the Meetings Be Shortened. Cincinnati, O., July 11. The Indications are that then; will be no more racing at the Kentucky tracks until the Kentucky State Fair opens at Douglas Park, Louisville, September l.ri. The fair will close September 21. There is little of certainty about dates after this. The matter lies entirely with tlie State Bating Commission and, though they have made no announcements on the subject, there have been intimations by the members that they are in a mood to limit tin; fall racing in the entire state to sixty days and probably fifty. Last spring it was the understanding that Douglas Park would have thirty days in the fall, hut since' the Douglas Park Jockey Club has pooled its interests' with the New Louisville Jockey Club and sold the track to the Kentucky State Fair Association, It is said the commission will not gi:ant more than three weeks to Louisville, the six days during the fair to be a part of the time. This would leave only two weeks at Churchill Downs. It is not certain that Latonia will get more than twenty days in the fall, but it is presumed that the meeting will begin either October 7 or October 1.". Lexington, it is understood, can have eight ('ays and it is probable that a meeting will be held at the Kentucky Association track. Yet this leafves a considerable gap until the opening of the w'mter tracks In New Orleans and on the Pacific Coost. The greatest hardship in closing the meeting here will fall on stable lnjlpers. Owners who will remain here will throw ttaeir horses out of active training, merely giving tliem walking and trotting exercises, and, as a matter of necessity, they will have to discharge many of their help. The major ity of the stables will re main here and endeavor to tide over in some sort of shape until racing is resumed. James Stevens will sh7p seven horses to Seattle. II. McCarren, Jr., will turn out the horses he has here and will devote his rtime to his produce business in New York. T. H. PJyan will ship the horses he has in training here to his Illinois farm, where they will be rested urrtll fall and then shipped to California. Starter Iloltman sayr he will -take a needed rest. He wired Harry Stovcjr at Butte this morning that if in need of horses bet can secure all he wants from this point. Mr. Jlol'nnan said that he had heard a rumor that there might be another short race meeting at Hamilton, Ohio, and also that there was some talk of a week's meeting at Dayton, Ohio, with $200 purses and special trains from Cincinnati. Neither, of these projects, however, have got beyond tlw rumor stage. J. IS. Bespess has. not yet decided where he will let jockey Lee fill in the idle time between now and fall, hut it is likely that he will go to Saratoga after a short stop-over at Kenilworth. James Griffith stated today that he would ship Frontenac and Ilusled to Fort Erie If he could get stable room there. The remainder or his string will be rested up here. Lexington, Ky., July 11. The action of the State Bacing Commission in refusing to grant an extension of dates to the Latonia Jockey Club will cause an Influx of horses to the local track. Several of the stables now racing at the Milldale track will come to Lexington after the close of the meeting on Saturday The local members of the commission, Colonel Milton Young and Louis des Cognets, said tonight that they had no idea as to what dates would be assigned Louisville and Latonia for fall meetings. They said that under the law each track can be limited to ten days next fall as thirty out of the forty days specified as the minimum allotment annually to each track had been devoted to spring meetings. The local members of the commission refused to discuss tho reason for their refusal of an extension of dates at Latonia, further than to say that the best interests of racing demanded short meetings each spring and fall. It is said that Latonia will be granted twenty days and that the officials of the track will be so notified by the secretary of the commission. Application for dates must be in thirty days before the opening day of the contemplated meeting. No application has been made by the local association for fall dates. Weir's Absence Explained WEIR'S ABSENCE EXPLAINED. New York, July 11. The fact that H. McLaughlin saddled Boseben and - Dr. Gardner at Brighton Beach yesterday does not mean that F. D. Weir has left his position as trainer of the horses In the Sulllvan-Farrell-Jolinson ' establishment. Mr. Weir has acquired more sensitiveness than he possessed In the time of racing at Gloucester and East St. Louis, and since that day in July, 190.1, when he was censured by the Brighton stewards for sending Kcator to the post in an unfit condition, he has not appeared at the track in the capacity o trainer. No Whips for Apprentices NO WHIPS FOR APPRENTICES. An Innovation has been inaugurated in England by a rule which does not permit boys riding in races for apprentices to carry whips, and tlie result of the experiment has been exceedingly good. Instead of looking after their whips and flourishing them nlxmt the jockeys look more to their horses, sit quiet and their work generally is more satisfactory. If has been suggested that the rule be made to apply to all races in which apprentices rije, and it may be adopted by all meetings. The following are the conditions for an apprentice race, with a notation that for "this race apprentices will not lie allowed to carry whips": An apprentices' handicap plate of 103 sovereigns, for three-year-olds and upward, lowest weight not less than six stone, to be ridden Ijy apprentices who have never ridden a winner except in apprentices' plates. Boys who have ridden in two of these to carry five pounds extra. Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM ISSUED EVERY DAY DAILY RACING FORM PUBLISHING CD. Colt Is Apt to Break Down, However Not-asulga Goes to Saratoga Gossip. New York. July 11. While some were inclined to blame Knapp' for making his rnn rather .too earlv with Frank Gill in tin Bealizalion, the colt's owner, J. L. McGinnis, had no such complaint to make. He Is of the opinion that there was little ground for placing the blame on Knapp. Zambesi (.topped verv suddenly and there was no extra effort used to send Krank Gill to the Trout, as there was nothing else for him to do but go on with the' lead When Zambesi retired. McGinnis still believes Frank Gill to be the best lhree-vear-ohl in America and would have given hair of its' value to have had the colt win the Realization, merelv for t!.e honor of it. It is not improbable, however, thai Frank Gill's racing career may be cut short at any time, as he has a very bad knee and was slightly lame after his race Tuesday. The trouble is such that it docs not yield readily to treatptent. There is always a rear mat lie - will break down and for this reason he has never been worked much between his race, which have come falrlv close together of late. Archibald, the steeplechase jockey, has been signed bv Joseph E. Widener for the remainder of the season. Archibald has made a favorable impression in his recent races here and with the Widener stable, which is in good rorm this season, he should be well up on the list at the end or the year. The new fences in the steeplechase course at Brighton Beach will surely satisfy sticklers for high and wide jumper. . Notasulga, having no engagements at Brighton Beach, has been shipped to Saratoga. Albert Hamel, her trainer and half owner, has gone to the Adlrondacks to spend a fortnight. Notasulga has been nominated for the Flight. Flatbush and other stakes for two-year-olds, which are to be run at the Coney Island Jockey Club's fall meeting, and which will close next Monday. "It was said yesterday that James B. Haggln Jiad refused an offer of .$25.(100' for his two-year-ohl tillv. Bouquet, by Kinley Mack Briar Sweet. P. J. "Rainey. C. E. Durnell and Mattle Corbett were said to have made attempts to buy her. Jimniv Owens, who had his arm broken when Merry Saint fell In the steeplechase at Sheepshead Bay "last Friday, was at Brighton Beach today. He savs he expects to be able to ride at Saratoga. IL S. Page is personally schooling Oaklawn at Belmont Park, and lie holds to the belief that the Belmont cast-off will yet prove himself worth while as a steeplechaser. Oaklawn made his first and only" appearance as a juniper at Gravesend June 15. unseating his rider at the Liverpool. He had trailed the other live, and his jumping caused the critics to express the opinion that the big chestnut, for which August Belmont two years ago had paid Willie Shields ?30,000, would not do. Colin was not withdrawn from the second half of the Double Event because of lameness, as some of the local papers had it, but simply liecause trainer Rowe diil not fancy the condition of the track. Had the track been fast the son of Com-maudo would have raced. John W. Gates and his son Charles, an; at present on a fishing trip. They left the day before the Brighton meeting opened. B. J.
