Golf Ball Runs Mile and a Quarter In 2:05 In Winning the Handicap Kernel a Surprise in Steeplechase. New York, July 12. Today's card at Brighton Beach, although lacking In stake fixtures, had attractive features otherwise, which appealed to all classes of racegoers. Chief among these was the race for gentlemen riders at six furlongs, wlilcli was won liy the young son of starter Mars Cassidy on Koliin Hood, the "second choice in the hetting, at 9 U 5. The shower of rain which preceded this race wet the track considerably and caused the owners of The Wrestler and True Hoy to scratcli out, leaving only three horses, Robin Hood, Shot Gun and Araho to compete for the valuable trophy. The supposedly invincible Shot Gun was held at prohibitive odds, which developed a tendency to sag as the betting progressed. Robin Hood, on the other hand, was accorded heavy support, which was justified by the outcome. John Mayberry's old campaigner unexpectedly made the running and kept steadily improving ills position from the seemingly waterlogged favorite. Mr. Cassidy rode the winner faultlessly, and was given an ovation by the spectators when he returned to the scales. There was renewed cheering when President Fitzgerald presented the young man with the three-handled silver cup that went to the successful rider. It was an elaborate alTair and had only just arrived from Tiffany's. Spooncr in the first ami Saylor in the last were the only public choices that made good. After Spooner came a procession of victorious and well-backed winners in which the general public had un share. Kernel's reversal of form in the steeplechase created much dissatisfaction. There was plenty of stable support forthcoming for him, notwithstanding his recent defeats. Golf Hall, at 1 to 1 and skillfully ridden by K. lMigan, led his opponents from start to finish in the mile .'mil a quarter handicap and stamped himself a three-year-old much above the ordinary. J. It. Kcene's uncertain racer, Cabochoii, was made favorite, but made a poor showing. Number One, at 10 to 1, in the fifth race for two-year-olds, was the only winner that could really be called an outsider. The immensity of the attendance for today, Friday and an oil day, was a source of wonderment to everybody anil was everywhere discussed. There must have been fully 20,000 persons in the inclosure by the time the third race came around and this despite the threatening weather in the forenoon. Haiti had also fallen during the night and the track was cuppy and unusually slow for the running of the first race. After, that it was nearly muddy, but drying out so rapidly that the uncommonly fast time of 2:05 was made over it in the mile ami a quarter handicap, won by Golf Kali. Indications are for clear weather tomorrow nnn H Is predicted that for the lirst time in the history of the track the overllow will have to l'nl accommodations in the infield. The stewards set G, Burns down for six days for rough riding in the last race. A. Featherstone was a visitor at the track this afternoon. It. L. Thomas lias notified the Metropolitan Turf Association, bookmakers and other ring operators to accept no more bets or markers from anybody in his name after today. Two Fall in First Race at Windsor: Jockey Moreland Has Hip Bruised-Hennessy Escapes Unhurt-One Favorite Wins TWO FALL IN FIRST RACE "AT WINDSOR Jockey Morcland Has Hip Bruised Henncssy Escapes Unhurt One Favorite Wins. Detroit. Midi., July 12. The talent had a iiard time picking winners at Windsor today. The track was in the worst possible condition. Western was the only favorite to win, and, being clear of the mix-up whiidi occurred on the far turn, he cantered away from the others, and won as his rider pleased. Etrena stumbled and fell after making the turn and threw Ilennessy over the fence, Morcland on Dan McKenna, blinded with mud, did not see the accident until too late to pull up, and fell over Etrena. Ilennessy escaped unhurt, but Morcland sustained a bruised hip. Jockey Swain was lined $25 for rough riding in the sixth race. Sam Partner shipped Peter Sterling and the rest of the stable to Fort Erie today. Judge Charles F. Price will spend the coming week at French hick Springs in Indiana, and will take up ids duties as presiding judge at Fort Erie when that meeting opens a week from Monday. Sells Another Man's Horse SELLS ANOTHER MAN'S HORSE. Hamilton, Ont., July 12. George Travers, a tout, is under arrest here on a charge of defrauding Reuben Rosenhead, a clothier. Travers, it is alleged, represented to Rosenhead that he was the owner of the horse Bitter Hand, and sold him a half Interest In that animal for $100. When Rosen-head discovered that the real owner of the horse Is Albert Beatty of Detroit, and that Bitter Hand was at Buffalo, he went to Windsor and had Travers arrested.. Double for Lazarus at Buffalo: Tee Tick and Right Royal Run Away from Their Company-Heavy Track DOUBLE FOR LAZARUS AT BUFFALO. Tee Tick and Right Royal Run Away from Their Company Heavy Track. Buffalo, X. Y., July 12. The colors- of Samuel Lazarus were carried to victory in two of the races at Kenilworth Park this afternoon. The winners were Tee Tick and Right Royal. Botli horses made runaway alTairs of their races. Tee Tick was hut little fancied. Over Right Royal's victory, however, a small-sized killing was made, the horse being heavily backed at even money. An old Xew Orleans trick was adopted by Tee Tick's trainer. The colt's hoofs and ankles were smeared with lard and he had no trouble running in the deep going. Right Royal made an exhibition of his opponents. He went to the front before they had taken a dozen strides and after racing under restraint for the first half mile, drew away and the further they went, the bigger the gap he opened. He was twelve lengths in front of Xo Trumper at the finish. The stewards today acting on a complaint lodged by 'Richard Dugan, fined W. II. IToirErntr$200 and ordered that all further entries of horses in his interests le refused. Holland got into an altercation with Dugan, who is a stable hand, on Wednesday last, hence the ruling. Dugan says Holland shot at him. Jockey J. Murphy, at present riding at Windsor, lias been granted an apprentice license by the Jockey Club and will lie seen in the saddle here on Monday. In the absence of Henry J. Morris, who is in bed with a sore throat, Colonel Robert Neville acted as presiding steward this afternoon. Steeplechase jockey Pemberlon, who is confined in the German hospital as a result of his accident on Rock Storm, recovered consciousness tills morning and he will probably pull through all right. II. Rites will ship his. string to Brighton Beach on Sunday. It. Boyle will return to Gravcscnd witli his stable next week and the Beacon Stable will ship to Saratoga. Jockey Charles Grand, the Chicago boy, who is on his way to Brighton Beach with the stable of E. Wayland, did good work in the saddle at Kenilworth, having been unplaced in hut eighteen races out of thirty-seven mounts. His record is live firsts, ten seconds, six thirds and eighteen unplaced. Dubois Wants the Mile Record: Thinks Charles Edward Can Run in 1:37 at Brighton Beach-Will Start Friday DUBOIS WANTS THE MILE RECORD. Thinks Charles Edward Can Run in 1:37 at Brinhton Beach Will Start Friday. New Yopk, July 12. William Dubois says that lie is satisfied that Charles Edward can run a mile over the Brighton track in 1:37 or better, aud has made up his mind to send his colt after the 'bonus of $1,000 which will go to the winner of the third race next Friday if the time is better than 1:38, which was the track record before Charles Edward rau his mile in l:37g in Wednesday's big feature. The special race next Friday is for three-year-olds and upward at one mile, and the conditions read: "By subscription of $10 each to the winner, with $1,500 added, of which $250 to the second and $150 to the third. The Association to add $1,000 in specie or plate at the option of the owner of the winner, should the track record for a mile, 1:38, bo beaten. Three-year-olds to carry 100 pounds; four-year-olds anil upward, 110 pounds." "I've got a good horse at last," said Mr. Dubois after he had announced his intention of starting in the race next Friday. "It took some time for me to secure the right one, but I made no mistake when I bought Charles Edward. He could have run that mile in 1:37 Wednesday as sure as you're alive, and I'm a bit sorry Knapp didn't ride him out, if only to secure a new turf honor. I helieve Charles Edward can beat almost any sprinter at six furlongs with big weight up, for lie is a powerfully built colt, with lots of stamina as well as speed." The conditions of the special are sufficiently alluring to make it certain that Charles Edward will have company enough to keep the pace hot. Inspector B. is Sold for $15 INSPECTOR B. At the dispersal of that great establishment Mr. Young bought him, and he has since been at McGrathiana Stud. ... Jockeys and Odds for Brighton: Peter Pan Will be Favorite for the Richest of American Handicap Today JOCKEYS AND ODDS FOR BRIGHTON. Peter Pan Will Be Favorite for the Richest of American Handicaps Today. Xew York, July 12. Particular interest is centered in tile Brighton Handicap, which is to be the feature of tomorrow's racing and a big crowd of interested horsemen and race-goers gathered about the secretary's otiice at the track today waiting for the issuance of the list of starters. It was agreed that the field is one of the best numerically and in point of class that has ever contested for the rich prize. It is also regarded as a very open affair and the unique distinction of being favorite may be accorded to a three-year-old, Peter Pan, which is carrying the highest weight, 115 pounds, ever imposed on a horse of his age In a race of this character. President Fitzgerald is the authority for the report that Beacon Lighr, one or the most formidable of the eligibles, pulled up seriously lame during the morning and that he may not start. The richest handicap of the American turf Will be run at Brighton Reach this afternoon and will attract a tremendous concourse of spectators to the homely old course by the sea. Speculation as to the outcome is rife as usual in such cases, and the fact that Mr. Keene seems to have decided to start Peter Pan, adds to the excitement of the occasion. Peter Pan lias a heroic task cut out for him, but lie is a grand colt and may prove equal to the exigencies of the occasion. By the scale of weights for age lie is set to concede weight to each other horse in the race, the concession ranging from eight pounds to twenty-six. He is unquestionably the fastest horse in the race, but it will be run at a killing pace, and the great disparity in burdens carried may tell disastrously in his case. Recent running iudicates that every horse named to start is cherry ripe and almost any one of them should win without any ground for demurring protests. A rule intended to wlc out the bookmaking horse owners in Kentucky was presented by Colonel E. F. Clay at the meeting of the State Racing Commission Wednesday, and it is understood that it will be unanimously adopted at the next meeting. In substance the rule prohibits any man from making a book on a race in which one of his horses Is running. One Week More at Denver ONE WEEK MORE AT DENVER. Denver, Col., July 12. Durnell Owns Contract on Dugan: Schreiber Sells His Half Interest in the Lightweight's Papers for $7,000 DURNELL OWNS CONTRACT ON DUGAN. Schrcibcr Sells His Half Interest In the Lightweight's Papers for $7,000. New York, July 12. On the eve of his departure for the west, Barney Schreiber sold his half interest in the riding contract on Eddie Dugan to C. E. Durnell for $7,000. II. P. Whitney, James R. Keene and Andrew Miller were keen to get the Missouri turfman's call on the crack lightweight jockey, and it is said that some of them bid as high as $10,000. Durnell, who held the contract witli Mr. Schrcibcr, was givei the preference at a considerable sacrifice. Little Dugan, who Is the simon pure jockey find of the season, was first discovered by Barney Schreiber "when riding at Oakland last winter. Durnell saw him ride a winning race on Blagg one day and straightaway broached the subject of the boy's purchase to Sclir.cibcr. The contract was acquired jointly by Schreiber and Durnell from. L. 0. Lee for about $5,000. Carthage Scores Again: Williams Profits Much by Last Saturday's Transaction CARTHAGE SCORES AGAIN. WILLIAMS PROFITS MUCH BY LAST SATURDAY'S TRANSACTION. Peter Becker Wins the Steeplechase Colonel Bob's Scratch Victory Brackets for Joe McCarthy, First Time Out. Cincinnati, O., July 12. A sticky, drying out track presented conditions anything but favorable for good racing at Eatonia today and yet two of the contests produced close and exciting finishes. Colonel Bob had all he could do to beat Cloyne a nose for the fifth race, and in the steeplechase Peter Becker lasted just long enough to defeat Graceland by a head In the final stride. The steeplechase was one of the best cross-country races of the meeting. In tlie third race, at a mile, Captain Jim Williams picked up his second purse with Carthage. In his race yesterday Carthage demonstrated his ability to run in the mud and today ills people backed him with confidence. Captain Williams has now won the horse out twice over and evidently knew what lie was talking about when he said he had much the best of the bargain when he claimed Carthage from J. B. Respess after John J. Murphy bid up and bought Phil Finch out of the Merchants' Stakes last Saturday. Colonel Bob was the best backed horse of the day. It was a scratcli victory for hlin as Cloyne was' best and would have won but for swerving at the finish. Joe McCarthy, which won the race for maiden two-year-olds had been reserved for suitable track conditions for some time and the stable connections are said to have won handsomely. The mile and a halt race went to Water hake 'In a hard drive from Attila. The latter was slightly impeded through the stretch and his rider claimed a foul against the winner, which was not allowed. The judges cautioned Cherry astride Clyde to do his best, lint the old horse seemed to dislike the stiff going and tired fast after going a mile. John S. Wallace, formerly manager of the Suburban Park track at New Orleans, arrived here this morning with the older horses, Ohio King, Ada Rice, Aunt Susan and the two-year-olds Reinstated, Erin's Green and Bowler. Mr. Wallace severed his connection at Suburban Park before the adoption of the American Turf Association rule against Sunday racing. He will rest his horses up here until the fall meetings begin. S. C. Wagner, who was among the visitors today, says there are no accommodations at the Dayton track and that there is no cnancc of a meetlug being held there this summer. The Citizens' Racing Association of Upper Sandusky, O., will give its fourth annual running meeting August 2S, 29, 30 and 31. The purses are $100 and $200 each. Several of the owners here will ship their horses to Sandusky. J. C. Milam shipped his horses to Lexington, where they will be rested until fall. He disposed of Lavatrina to II. J. Harris during tnc afternoon. S. K. Hughes lias returned to Lexington where he will take up several yearlings at the Kentucky Association track. Judge E. C. Hopper will go to his home at Hustonville, Ky., for a much needed rest. J. B. Respess will send his horses to Fort Erie. E. A. Cella's string will be shipped, to Fort Erie, With them will go Mike Sutton. Many horsemen arc awaiting definite news as to the Empire City track. Many shipments from here will be made if there is to lie a meeting at Yon-kers. T. P. Hayes will rest his horses here for some time and then probably ship to New York. Ed Alvey's string will be shipped back to Louisville. The contemplated rule of the racing commission barring bookmakers from starting horses where they arc operating a book will probably cause Alvey to sell his horses. Condensed History of the Brighton Handicap CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE BRIGHTON HANDICAP. In its first three years of running the Brighton Handicap was not held to be of much Importance, but advanced in estimation when its added money was raised to $5,000 and took first rank when its value was further increased to $25,000, making it the most valuable handicap of the American turf for three-year-olds r.nd over. It has been the medium of some remarkable contests in marvellously fast time. In it Gold Heels, Waterboy and Broomstick in successive years lowered the American record for the distance and some-thing more in the same line may lc in store for this afternoon. London Sporting Life verifies the report cabled from Dublin that Captain Greer had declined Richard Croker's challenge for a match between Orby and Slleve Gallion. It says "Our Irish correspondent has been informed by Mr. Croker that he made an offer to Captain Greer to rim Orby against Slicve Gallion, in a match for a substantial wager, over any distance from live furlongs to three miles. Mr. Croker's only stipulation was tht the proposed race should take place in Ireland. Captain Greer declined the proposal."
