PRICE 5 CETS Chapultepec Victorious: De Mund's Half Brother Easily Wins the Neptune Stakes CHAPULTEPEC VICTORIOUS, DE MUND'S HALF BROTHER EASILY WINS THE NEPTUNE STAKES. Far West Takes the Islip Handicap Kernel a Surprise in the Curragh Steeplechase Good Sport at Brighton. New York, July. "0. The card at Brighton Beach today was one of tlic best of the meeting. It contained three stake features the .$7,500 Neptune Stakes for two-year-olds; the Islip Handicap for older horses and the Curragh Stakes for steeplechasers. In addition there were as many attractive over-night events, in one of which the mighty Hose-hen was called upon to carry the tremendous weight of 150 pounds. A heavy rain during the forenoon Hooded the track and as it did not cease until after 1 o'clock many persons remained away from the course. The attendance, however, exceeded 15,000, and those who were speculatively inclined had a profitable and pleasant day's outing, as four extensively backed favorites won and -favorable atmospheric conditions prevailed for the remainder of the afternoon. The Neptune Stakes, which was the principal feature on the program, received two important additions in Smoker and Magazine, which fully equalized the loss of the conspicuous absentee, Monopolist. Chapultepcc, carrying top weight of 122 pounds, achieved a wonderful victory in this race. It was one of the most startling exhibitions of speed seen in the east this season. The half-brother to I)e Mund was heavily hacked. lie was so much the best that K. Dugan was not able to pull him hack to within hailing distance of the others. The struggle for second place was a hot one, however, between Smoker, Sir ClegeS" and"" Rslyinotid; it being ny-. one's place until the very end, when the Hitchcock colt drew out under Kadtke's vigorous finish. A plunge of large proportions materialized for Far West and he closed at 7 to 5. .Martin Doyle was favored by John W. Gates and that accounts for the lengthened odds against Cairngorm, Cabo-chon, Dolly Spanker and Coy Maid. The race was a spectaeular one. The favorite set a tremendous pace from the start, closely attended by Cabochon, Coy Maid and Martin Doyle. At the half the Keene representatives drew out suddenly and showed the way for a sixteenth, then as suddenly retired, leaving Far West with a comfortable lead, which was eventually decreased in the stretch by the fast coming Cairngorm, which just failed to get up in an exciting finish. W. Knapp, rider of the runner-up, claimed that his horse was rou'oii by the winner, which had actually taken a diagonal course home, but as the I'aget horse had himself displayed the same tendency to bore out and was not impelled in any way, the stewards did not alter the. original placing. The condition of the course was such that the element of danger overshadowed every other consideration. Jimmy Lane bled and fell after he hail established a seemingly winning lead. Sheriff Williams then took command with every prospect of ultimate success, but he, too, blundered and the steadily rated Kernel came on and made good finally. Red River, a pronounced mud runner, at odds-on, accounted for the sprint handicap, fifth on the card, after Roseben, Suffrage, Rarbary .Relle, Rapid Water and Commodore Anson had been withdrawn. Lally, an extreme outsider, backed from -10 to P.O to 1, easily took Von Tromp, the receding favorite in the last race, Into camp. Orphan Lad was claimed out of this race by J. D. Logan for $1,SG0. Keene's Yearlings to be Broken: Will be Shipped to New York This Week Young Buys Out His Partners KEENE'S YEARLINGS TO BE BROKEN. Will Be Shipped to New York This Week-Young Buys Out His Partners. Lexington, Ky., July 20. With the exception of Fleming and Chulita, W. J. Young owns all the horses now in his racing stable. Mr. Young has bought out all of his partners In the other horses. Chulita, winner of the Cincinnati Trophy, is owned by A. S. Labold and Mr. Young is only interested in the winnings of the daughter of Kingston. The same conditions exist as to Fleming, which good three-year-old is owned by Gus Eastin, of Ben Holladay and Kiniey Mack fame. Mr. Young has done well since lie deserted the trotters for the runners, and says he will race only his own horses the coming season. Among the yearlings at Castleton Stud, owned by James R. Keene, which will be shipped east next week to be broken and trained under the supervision of James Rowe, there are many that are close relations to the cracks that have carried the colors of Mr. Keene. Peter Pan has a half-sister and Court Dress a half-brother in the collection. There is a sister to Gretna Green, a half-brother to Lambent, a sister to Conroy, a brother to Wild Mint, a half-brother to Pope Joan, and a brother to Hurst Park; a half-sister to Whitechapel, a brother to Dolly Spanker, a half-brother to Superman, a half-sister to Frontenac, a sister to Veil, a sister to Masque and a half-sister to Delagoa, Zambesi and Knroki. The only yearling by the dead Commando, sire of Peter Pan, Colin and Superman, is a chestnut colt out of Running Stream by Domino. Commando was bred to but four mares in iy0iC"""One of these, Fealty, was later bred to Voter and she has a colt now at Castleton which is of double parentage. Calico by Hampton foaled a bay filly which died and Ben My Cree, dam of the Americau bred English Oaks winner, Cap and Bells, had. a brown colt that did not live to registration age. Clem Pearce has taken up twenty yearlings at Hamburg Place and has begun breaking them. The youngsters are by John E Madden's .stallions, including Yankee, Plaudit, Ogden and Galore. David Gideon's great mare. The Butterflies, the first filly winner of the Futurity, was bred this season to Star Shoot, and will remain at Raccland Stud until the warm Aveather is over. The daughter of Sir Dixon was barren last season, after having been mated with Little Saint. Collins Arranges a Settlement: Brown, the Insane Betting Agent, is Sent to Amityville Asylum COLLINS ARRANGES A SETTLEMENT. Brown, the Insane Betting Agent, Is Sent to Amityville Asylum. New York, July 20. Hugh Collins, tin; clubhouse commissioner, has arranged the settlement of markers to tlie extent of $25,000 bet in his name and without his knowledge Tuesday last, by Anthony Brown, one of .his employes. Brown was adjudged Insane this morning and was sent to the asylum at Amityville. He has been raving since he was taken away from the track by friends Wednesday afternoon. It is said he has constantly walked the floor of his room wearing a silk hat and refusing to eat or sleep. It was Brown's duty to go to the ring and "lay ofT" wagers taken in the clubhouse by Collins from his patrons. Brown was therefore well known among the bookmakers, and his credit, or rather that of his employer, was considered to be without limit. On Tuesday Brown went the rounds of the layers and placed about $10,000 on Dinna Ken in the Brighton Mile, supposedly for Collins. Dinua Ken was beaten by Charles Edward. Then Brown came back for the next nice and wagered about $10,000 more on Heknows, another odds-on favorite that finished second to Please. As a wind-up lie made a final trip to the books and placed $5,000 or more on Druid, the favorite in the last race, getting :; to 1; only to see the mare, come home in the ruck. The bookmakers, including William Cowen, Sol Liclitenstein, Jim Murphy and practically all tiie big fellows, handled these wagers, which, of course were mads? "on the nod," and thought nothing of the affair, believing that a setteleinent would be made next day before the races, as is the custom. But they were soon up in the air. Brown came to the track about 1:30 o'clock Wednesday and hunting up ringmaster John G. Cavanagh, said quietly: "Give me that roll of $100,000 of mine Which you have In your ivocket.' "You're joking," exclaimed Cavanagh with a laugh. "No, I'm not," replied Brown, earnestly. "I gave you the money to hold after the races yesterday and now 1 want it to settle up a few debts." Brown soon became violent and a couple of Pink-ertons grabbed him. Then it turned out that he owed the bookmakers about $25,000 in markers. The Pinkertons sent for Collins, who said that he knew nothing of Brown's operations ot Tuesday and that he believed the latter was irresponsible. As Brown continued to act strangely he was turned over to gome friends for safe keeping. They took him to the clubhouse, where he spent the afternoon sniok'ng cigarettes one after another and talking about his lost bankroll, which by that time, according to his version, had amounted to a cool million. Meanwhile Collins, who had been almost knocked out by the news of the defalcation, made a statement to the effect that he would settle In full with the bookmakers even if he had to mortgage his property. He said that he had always found Brown to be trustworthy and scrupulous in his dealings with the ring. Wants Outlaw Rules Abolished: Racing Commission to Consider Butler's Demand-Says Meeting Will Open August 5 WANTS OUTLAW RULES ABOLISHED. Racing Commission to Consider Butler's Demand Says Meeting Will Open August 5. New York, July 20. James W. Wadsworth, chairman of the State Racing Commission, made the announcement at Brighton Beach this afternoon that the commisson would hold a meeting next Tuesday to consider a demand just made upon them by the Empire City Trotting Association to nullify rules six and seven of ' the Jockey Club rules. He had nothing to say to the press as to the probable action of the commission, but it is rumored that in a conversation at the clubhouse he remarked that he could not see how the commission could comply with this demand. Mr. Wadsworth did say, however, that he is of the opinion that the commission will win its case against the Empire City Association in the Court of Appeals. " I have notified the owners and trainers of trotters and pacers now stabled at the Empire City track that we will want the track after Monday for the proposed running meeting, which will begin Monday, August 5," said James Butler, the chief owner of the plant this afternoon in response to a request for information as to his intentions. "We will then liegin arrangements for our meeting, which will be pulled off acording to schedule in spite of the opposition of the Jockey Club and the obstacles they seek to throw in our way." It appears now that Mr. Butler and his associates are determined to fight the thing through and take the chance of being outlawed, but at the same time absolutely nothing has been made public as to the plans for the meeting, such as the character of the racing, the size of the purses and the officials to be in charge. With the possibility that all persons participating in the meeting will be outlawed, it is rather difficult to see where; the matter for a racing meeting is coming from, as few owners and trainers will care to place themselves on record as opposing the Jockey Club. In the meantime those who have the best interests of racing at heart are very much disturbed over the outcome, fearing that the present fight bodes no good to the future of the sport In New York state. Mi-. Butler professed to have behind him in the fight many influential persons and claims that they will be with him to the finish. Croker's Rhodora is a Good Filly: Half Sister to Orby Runs White Eagle to a Head for Rich Stakes CROKER'S RHODORA IS A GOOD FILLY. Half Sister to Orby Runs White Eagle to a Head for Rich Stakes. London, July 20. Richard Croker's Rhodora, the two-year-old half-sister to Orby, winner of the Epsom Derby and the Irish Derby, was beaten only a short head by W. Hall Walker's White Eagle in a sensational finish for the National Breeders Produce Stakes of $25,000 at Sandown Park this afternon. White Eagle was a 2 to 5 favorite, while the betting against Rhodora was 7 to 1. The distance was five-eighths of a mile. Mr. Croker receives $2,000 out of the stakes. Rhodora is a brown filly by St. Frusquin, out of the American mare Rhoda B., by Hanover. White Eagle is a chestnut colt by Gallinule Merry Gal and is a full brother to Ulpian and half-brother to Merry Moment. While Eagle won the Woodeote Stakes at Epsom and the Ascot Biennial Stakes in such convincing fashion that his victory today was a foregone conclusion ami the showing of Rhodora against him was a great surprise. Rhodora won the Cadogau Plate at Leopardslown on the last day of May, giving Temaraire a pound and beating liim easily by two lengths, but when these two came together a fortnight later at Curragh, the gray colt beat Mr. Croker's filly a length for the Waterford Testimonial Stakes, though he was carrying only 119 pounds to her EiO. However, these races in Ireland were not given as much consideration here as they shouU have had. Rattler, Veteran of Veterans .RATTLER, VETERAN OF VETERANS. A curiosity in a racing way is the horse Rattler, now running at Butte, Montana. Rattler is programmed as a chestnut gelding twenty-three years old by Sam Bass Dolly, she by a son of Hunter's Lexington. His owner is Dan BIcvins o Helena, who is eighty-three years of age. While there is no trace of the breeding of this horse in the Stud Book, there is good reason to believe that he is four years younger than stated on the Butte program and that he is the same horse raced by J. W. Fuller, the Texas turfman of Tokalon and George Arnold fame, back in the nineties. Rattler in those days was programmed as a chestnut gelding, foaled in 1S8S, by Sam Bass, out of Mollie Steel Dust, and at times as out of .Mollie. This Rattler was a fast horse at a short distance and ran frequently in Texas and Arkansas, beating April Fool and horses of his kind. It is said that this horse at Butte has run many a quarter race better than 21 seconds and that he has done that sprint in 22. That was the game of the Fuller Rattler, to. Beckon began the season in the colors of John E. Madden, who sold her to Mr Hitchcock in April. She was named as one of Mr. Hitchcock's ellgibles to the Saratoga Special and is well engaged for the meeting at the Spa. Heine a Good Thing in a Soft Spot Depar-. tures of Horsemen and Horses For Other Points. Buffalo, N. Y., July 20. The meeting of thirty-one days at Kenllworfh Park came to a close with the running of today's program. The features of the card were the Genesee Stakes, for two-year-olds, the Tonawanda Handicap, at one mile for three-year-olds and over, and a steeplechase over the' two-mile course. The contests were interesting and a majority of the finishes were close enough to be exciting. Tee Tick, under the judicious riding of Musgravc, won the Genesee Stakes. When the leaders swung wide when entering the homestretch Musgravc sl-ot Tee Tick up next to the inside rail and at the furlong post was on equal terms with the leaders. When it came to a drive Tee Tick, displaying rare ganicness, drew away and won by a length. There was a high wind blowing up the homestretch and tills accounted for the rather slow time, the five furlongs being run in 1:02J. The history of the Genesee Stakes is tabled below: Year. Winner. Vigilant, in the London Pink 'On, has the following to say about false starts: "One of the most miserable experiences we ever had oil a race course was the start for the Derby in ISO.-!. It rained in torrents, and first one horse broke away and theti another, witli Tambour Major standing still. For nearly an hour we watched that irritating and wearying spectacle and when at length the flag fell Tambour Major continued to stand still. For this race there were thirty-four false starts. For the Derby of 1SG2, it is well known that if Lord Stamford had lodged his objection in time the race would have had to be run over again, and what a pretty statq of affairs that would have been. The horses, or some of them, were on the wrong side of the post when the flag fell. This, of course, could not have taken place with the 'gate.' " Jockeys for Canadian Derby JOCKEYS FOR CANADIAN DERBY. ' Buffalo, N. Y., July 20. The following jockeys have been engaged to ride in the Canadian Derby at Fort Erie Monday: Eliicott, Nicol; Cave Adsum, J. Lee; Reside, C. H. Shilling; Old Honesty. Cherry; J. R. Laughrey, A. Martin; Charlie Gilbert, J. Kelly; Denham, Mulcahy; Tourenne, W. Kunz; Kelpie, Moreland. Indications tonight are that Eliicott will be an, overwhelming favorite with Cave Adsum, on account of his local prestige, second choice. Old, Honesty is reported as having shipped well and will receive the support of the visiting element here from Latonia. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE. TURF. T. ,D. Figures Illustrating That a Winning Race Horse is an Excellent Business Proposition P FIGURES ILLUSTRATING THAT A WINNING RACE, HORS&4 IS AN EXCELLENT BUSINESS PROPOSITION. A winning race horse is an excellent business proposition. There is nothing like equality in the earning capacity of the runner and trotter. Snch "money takers as Accountant was in 1900 and Peter Pan is this year, win four or live times as much' as the chief winning trotter of any year. To own such a leviathan among racers would mean a fortune, to the average man. But aside from the Sysonbys, Delhis, Beldames, 'Accountants and Peter Pans, there are many other i racers that earn for their owners a lesser number or thousands, yet many thousands and continue 'their lucrative returns for a sufficient number of years to render any person of reasonably economical habits comfortably rich. Some. of these are of stake class, but many of-the so-called selling platers earn surprising aggregates. C. C. Smithson's mare Azelina, for instance, in an industrious career, lias won thirty-three races in a total of 127, nearly all purses of moderate value and lias returned the considerable sum of $12,005 to her owners in the course of. four years. Tlfousauds of men with considerable capital Invested in this, that or the other line of business would deem themselves fortunate it able to net such a return from their investments. This little mare furnishes but one o a host of similar instances. Two specimens taken from a higher class horses that figure respectably in handicaps Oxford and Dishabille, show1 returns for thec same number of years of $39,405 and $32,515. respectively. Considering that a public trainer will feed, train and race a horse for from $2 to $3 per day, it can be seen that the net annual return in. such cases is very great. The table appended in Illustration Is of horses selected at random that have campaigned for the last Tour years and are still in active service and likely to add considerably to their total earnings before retiring from the arduous service of the track. They are but a small section from the class of horses they represent. Last year 177 racers won 5,000 or more, the majority of which would show well in this table. But consideration of what is herd displayed will serve to emphasize the statement that ownership of a winning race horse is decidedly a good possession. There are only four among these horses that cost as much as $1,000 as yearlings. Glorifier was sold to L. V. Bell for $2,200. Pat Dunne paid $1,250 for Envoy. Dr. Leggo was knocked down t'rt C. Ci McCalt'erty for $1,200 and M. I). .Miller paid $i;000 for Gold Enamel. Lady Ellison', Minnie Adams' and Raibert were sold privately. Dishabille, Dr.' Gardner, Charlie Eastman; Preen, Handzarra and John Carroll were raced first by the men who bred them. The prices of others were: Airship, $100; Cutter, $550; Logistilla, $225; Red Leaf, $300; Fire-hall, $400; Oxford, $300; Royal. Legend, $375; Silver-skin, $500 and Matador, $750. In all, seven slake races will he decided at Brighton Beach in the course of the present -week, the $15,000 Brighton Junior Stakes being the most important of the seven in respect to value. Food for Followers of Favorites FOOD FOR FOLLOWERS OF FAVORITES. Favorites gave a more satisfactory account of themselves at Kenilworth this summer than they dld a year ago, yet the percentage of winning first choices was about three points below normal, and there were altogether too many odds-on propositions to please the general public. Of the 1S1 races decided, 70 were won by first choices 11 per cent. Second choices won 37 and third choices and outsiders accounted for the remaining 75 races. There were 4S odds-on choices, of which 33 won. The shortest price of the meeting was 1 to 15, Preen, July 3, when he romped away from Irene A. The longest price was 50 to 1, Louis Boederer, Thursday last. There was no day on which all the favorites were defeated, and likewise no day on which all of them won, five out of six, July 15, being the best day. This showing was so superior to that at the recent Latonia meeting that it must have been refreshing to the followers of form who turned their attention to the Buffalo track during the last week. At Latonia favorites won only 4S of the 1S7 races won 20 per cent. There were only 27 odds-on choices at that meeting, but thirteen of them were defeated. There were six days on which 110 favorite won. The "cinch players" had the lime of their lives to keep their heads above water, and it will be many a moon before they forget the oxeriences or tliose thirty days from June 10 to July 13. The showing at Windsor, though the ring' was syndicated, was bettor than at Latonia. During the twenty-live days from Juno 15 to July 13, 159 races wore run, and 00 first choices 30 per cent won. There was no day on which no favorite won. The number of odds-on favorites was 22, and just half of them were defeated. In this case, however, the odds-on choices were rather more the favorites of the layers than of the public. ( 1 Interest In the Bjg Jack Pot Will Be In- r. creased After the Brighton Junior. ; i Between now and the running of tlic Futurity, ; which will lie the feature of the opening day of the 1 Coney Island Jockey Club's fall meeting at Sheens- bead llity, August 111, four stakes for two-year- ' olds having each a gross value of $10,000 or more, are to be decided. They are the Brighton Junior, ' sit Brighton Beach next Saturday, the Saratoga Special August 10, Grand Union Hotel Stakes August ' II and the United States Hotel Stakes August -1. The last three named are, of course, to be run at ( Saratoga. The distance of eacli is three-quarters j of a mile and the entries are pretty much the same . for the four races. That is, the season's present stars are all eligible. The Brighton Junior lias a guaranteed gross value of $l."i,000 and the last named two are fixed to be worth $10,000 each. The value of the Saratoga Special is problematical, but it will lie worth not less than $l-,i)00 and not ' more than $iM,500. It is a "jack pot" stakes, that is, tlie winner takes it all. This year ninteen subscriptions : were taken at ?1,000, half forfeit. For each subscription three horses were named May 1. There can be but one starter for each subscription. Say nine go to the post; that will be ?!,000, and the other ten subscriptions not represented in the race will bring the sum up to $11,000. To this the ; Saratoga Association adds a piece of plate valued at $l!riOO. There Is already great interest in the probabilities of the Saratoga Special, but after the Brighton Junior, which will furnish a better line on the result than can be bad at this time, the day of the race will lie awaited with increased anxiety. Probably nine out of ten people scanning the list of eiigibles would say off-band that Colin will duplicate Sy-sonby's victory In the race ot 1001 for James B. Keene, but the best observers of racing would say that the element of uncertainty is intensified by the lack of knowledge as to the qualities of those that have not appeared under silks as yet. The most talked of among the youngsters that have not started is II. P. Whitney's Burgher. It is said that trainer Bogcrs lias no doubt about ' his ability to take Colln's measure the first time they meet, but lie lias not said that lie intends to start the son of Hamburg Ilurly Burly in this race. Some good guessers say he is saving him for the Futurity. The Saratoga Special bad its first running in 1901, and W. C. Whitney won it with Goldsmith. That race was wortli $1-1,500. In 11HK! Irish Lad brought Whitney & Duryea $1S,000 for his victory. The ni'xt year John E. Madden' s Aristocracy was the winner and the value of the race was $21,500. Then came Sysonby's success in 1901, -which iirought Mr. Keene $11,000. In 1903 Mohawk II. won for the Messrs. Stanford and the value was $10,500. Last year Salvidcre, named by the late Captain S. S. Brown, but running for Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., was the winner and his pot was $1.",000.
