XIU. 3STO. 177. CHICAGO, THURSDAY, JULY 25, 1907. PBICE 5 CENTS May Sanction Meeting: Jockey Club Says No Arbitrary Discrimination is Intended MAY SANCTION MEETING. JOCKEY CLUB SAYS NO ARBITRARY DISCRIMINATION IS INTENDED. Raciny Commission by a Slight Chancjc in the Rules Opens Way for Recognition If Yonkcrs People Use Tact. J New York, .Inly 21. At the meeting of the State Racing Commission this afternoon, wlien briefs were submitted by the Jockey Club anil the Umpire City Trotting Club covering the request made by the latter organization that certain restraining rules of the .lockey Club be inodilicd, a compromise was effected inasmuch as it was agreed to change the rules to the extent that it becomes unnecessary for any association to get a license from the Jockey Club, but that such association must have the approval or the Jockey Club. While the change is slight, it opens up the way for recognition of the Umpire City meeting, but only after this club has submitted to the Jockey Club for its approval its list of ollicials, program, etc. The claim was made that so far Mr. liutlcr and his associates had asked absolutely nothing of the Jockey Club, their communications having been simply announcements in reference to the proposed meeting. It is the general belief now that matters will be smoothed over and that the outlaw rule will not lie operative against any one participating Ju the meeting at the Yonkcrs track. Chairman WadswortU said: "In view of the formal declaration or the Jockey Club to us that it did not propose to arbitrarily discriminate against the Umpire City Trotting Club, it was not deemed necessary by the commission to modify the existing rules of racing at this time, except in respect of the use of the word "license" in certain rules, where such word was inaccurate and would indicate an apparent conllict of authority between the commission and the Jockey Club, and in one or two other minor and unimportant respects." August Itclmont, when asked as to the attitude of the Jockey Club in respect to racing outside of Saratoga during August, said: "To promote a healthy iind general interest in racing has been the object of the Jockey Club. After the experiences preceding 181) I, when racing was becoming a harmful craze and a mere incident to gambling at tracks, the type of Guttcnborg and Maspcth, both day and night, the Jockey Club believed a respite in August in the metropolitan district was a wise precaution. "It is not yet satislied that this policy is not the best. A sentimental pity for the so-called small Jiorsc owner must not blind those who love racing and wish its healthy survival to the danger of encouraging tlie growth of irresponsible and purely money making ventures, whose managers will lie at all times ready, for the mere sake or gain, to help break down the safeguards placed around the turf after years of work by its real lovers and promoters. And it must be remembered the Jockey Club is not a self-constituted body, but prior to the passage of the Percy-Gray law, was requested at a mass meeting of owners, trainers, jockeys, associations and others interested in the turf to incorporate itseir with a limited membership and take full charge or racing iu this section of the country." J. 15. Soley, speaking of the Umpire City Club, said: "We accept liierally the declaration of the Jockey Club to the State Kacing Commission that it did not propose to arbitrarily- discriminate against "the Umpire City Trotting Club, and therefore we will submit a list of ollicials to the Jockey Club tomorrow for its approval." New York, July 21. Tlie steeplechaseer Phantom has been destroyed and Thomas Hitchcock, Jr. has purchased Bayonet from' F. A. Clark to till the place or the six-year-old son or Meddler Dissembler in his stable. It was the intention to send Phantom to West bury, but it was found that his breakdown in Saturday's race was such that he could not recover and it was decided to humanely put him to death. Phantom did not race as a two-year-old. He began his career as the property of the Arverne Stalde at Brighton Beach, July 21, P.HH. His first race as a steeplechaser was at Shoepshcad Bay June 22. 1!)05. and he did all of his jumping in Mr. Hitchcock's colors. While not a steeplechaser of tin! lirst quality, Phantom was an honest one, and at the top of his form it took a very good horse to beat him. He was especfally at home over the Gravesend course, when; he was rarely beaten. The following is a record of his performances and winnings: Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. Won. Polly Prim Takes the Handicap Steeplechase Goes to Russell A. Buffalo, N. Y., July 24. I'olly Brim, holder of the Kenilworth mile record, won today's feature race at Fort Urie, tlie handicap at a mile and a sixteenth. I'olly l'rim carried top weight, was favorite iu tlie betting and won easily after making all her own pace. She was ridden by J. Lee and defeated among others Hie four-year-old Peter Sterling, a horse that is rated one of tlie best of the handicap division on tlie Canadian circuit. The racing was clean and a majority of the races were well contested and, better still, six of tlie seven favorites won. Tlie attendance was good and speculation brisk. The steeplechase, which went to tlie favorite Bussell A., proved a hurly burly affair witli the Held rustling at the jumps pell nicll. Not one of tlie six starters made any attempt to raise. They merely brushed through the jumps and.it appeared that every one of the lot would go down'nt one time or another. J. I'. Strode lias arranged with Fred Cook to train tlie two-year-olds Whisk Broom and Lattice. These horses are due to arrive from Latonia tomorrow. U. Itindsburg will ship his string to the 'Umpire City track Saturday. Several other horsemen have also announced their intention of shipping to the Yonkcrs track next week. Lee was lined $25 for rough riding iu the t-evenlh race. While rounding the far turn Lee pulled over ami sharply cut oil Ayr Water. The horses George S. Williams' Big Coup with Carthage: Fair Play Wins Montauk Stakes-Brighton Ring Loses Heavily WILLIAMS' BIG COUP WITH CARTHAGE. Fair Play Wins Montauk Stakes Brighton Ring Loses Heavily. New York, July 21. Tills was tlie thirteenth day of tlie Brighton Beach meeting and doubtless many intending bettors were prepared for reverses which did not materialize. Except for a fraction of odds between Thistledale and Garrett in the steeplechase favorites made a clean sweep of the card. It was a memorable day for a number of coups that went through; also for the heavy losses sustained by the ring. ' Bat Masterson, backed from S to 1 to 11 to 5 led off with a victory in the first which relieved the layers of thousands or dollars. They had an even break in the second when Thistledale won at- It! to r. It was in the third that Carthage at S to C appeared and carried off their bank rolls. A half dozen wealthy, heavy speculators, including John W. Gates, bet' heavily on Captain Jim Williams' good thing. Cartilage was ridden by Radtkc, tlie colt never gave his backers a moment's uneasiness. The owner's share of the. money won on Carthage is said to have exceeded $23,000. Cliapultepec, Hessian and Mcelick were withdrawn and Koyal Vane, 125 pounds, was added in tlie Montauk Stakes. August Belmont's Fair 1'Iay at prohibitive odds had his work cut out to earn a head decision over the added starter. The tabled history of the Montauk Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey.
