( Essex II., Dick Finnell, Martin Doyle and , Security Winning Favorites Carthage's ' Withdrawal Disappointing. ' Now York, August 2. The card for tlio last day lmt one of Hie current Brighton meeting was lacking J if. stake fixtures, hut there were six rattling good overnight races, including a handicap at one mile and an eighth, and a steeplechase handicap in which gentlemen riders had mounts. The attendance was large. The weather was clear and hot, but tempered by cooling ocean breezes. In a betting way the day was one of the most satisfactory and enjoyable that the race-going public has experienced this season. The slaughter of the layers began with the victory of Cowan, a daughter of Armeath II. and Aleadowley, which was making her debut on the turf in the first race. When the odds against the unknown debutante rose to 20's the ring was Hooded with commissions and, notwithstanding the tremendous support accorded the choices, Itosimiro and Masquerade, the price against her fell steadily until it touched 7 to 1 and they were industriously taking those odds when the race was on. Ten minutes of delay at the post and the ring would have been swamped, as subsequent developments revealed thai manipulators of this remarkable coup had actually failed to get all their money down. The counter-plays on J. II. Keene's reputed crack and on the natural favorite made possible the success of S. J. Lawler's operations. (own n was bought at the sale of Ilancocas yearlings in 1900 by Dr. Carter for $200. S. J. I,awler afterward bought her for 1,500 on the strength of. a quarter in 23 seconds and that astute trainer proceeded to give the filly the long and careful preparation necessary to fit her for today's race. Gowan received an alert, hustling ride from Knapp and after holding a good position from the start, drew out and made good in the stretch. Any mistakes would have meant her defeat. The layers had hardly recovered their equilibrium when an avalanche of successful favorites eoni-ni( need to drop in with monotonous and costly regularity. Kssex II. was forced down from 2 to 1 to 11 1o 10 under heavy and persistent support. It was mere play for the half-breed jumper to take his opponents into camp. Blue Pigeon received scattering support and the others were ignored. In the third there was a pronounced willingness to take odds-on about Dick Finnell and the layers never had a dull moment. Every horse but the favorite receded in the betting on this race. Dick Finnell won with ridiculous ease. Speculation for place was confined to Lad of Langdcn and Tony lionero at S to 5. They linished second and third respectively. Again the layers were hard hit. The race of the day from a class standpoint, came next. It was the mile and an eighth handicap Precisely the same ring conditions prevailed as in the preceding race. There were eight starters and the noted western horse Martin Doyle was the outstanding favorite, held at 7 to 5 at post time, being hacked down from twos. Miss Crawford and Tommy AVaddell alternated as pacemakers until .Martin Doyle grew tired of waiting in the rear and went up to and by. them as if they were anch-oreed, coming home in leisurely fashion. It was a one sided contest and there was general disappointment over the withdrawal of Carthage. There was a general desire on the part of the metropolitan race-goers to see him measure strides with Martin Doyle in order to determine which is the better horse. The handicapper had awarded the palm to Carthage when lie asked the Serrano gelding to carry 120 pounds to Martin Doyle's 125. Owner Cahill and his friends recovered their previous losses on Security with interest in the selling sprint, lifth on the card. The degenerate half-brother to Diek Welles, Ort Wells and Dick Finnell, hacked from 4 to 1 to 11 to 5 at the close, proceeded to towrope the company of fast selling platers and i whatever chance the runner-up and the opening favorite, Voorhees, had, went glimmering under the ' pilotage of the novice, C. Brady. Tlie last was a selling affair for two-year-olds at six furlongs in which Banyah, M. Kraus' recent acquisition from Barney Schreiber, at C to 1 spread-eagled the others. It was a poor lot that finished b hind the winner, only one of the three choices, Servile, being able to earn a place. The other two, Itegal Itoyal and Glaucus, were lost in the shuttle. President Fitzgerald was so much encouraged by the success of today's steeplechase in which gentlemen jockeys disported themselves that he announced that the Brighton Association will give a similar affair, and another race of two miles on the flat for qualilied hunters, to be ridden by amateurs, during the October week meeting in the fall. The latest reports regarding the condition of jockey Walsh, who was injured yesterday when the horse Vino fell, are very favorable and his ultimate recovery is practically assured. Old Honesty Defeats Cave Adsum: Equals a Fort Erie Track Record-Balla the Only Successful Favorite ' OLD HONESTY DEFEATS CAVE ADSUM. Equals a Fort Erie Track Record Balla the Only -Successful Favorite; Buffalo, X. Y., August 2. Balla, the well-ridden winner of the fifth race, was the only successful favorite at Fort Erie this afternoon, and incidentally it was the first purse Louis A. Cella has taken at the meeting. The surprise of the afternoon came when Cave Adsum, the odds-on favorite for the fourth race, was beaten by Old Honesty. The latter made a runaway affair of it and equaled the track record of 1:52 for the mile and an eighth. There was more rough riding. Principia's defeat in the first race was due in the greatest measure to the interference which she suffered in the early stages. Austin, who had the mount on Frank Collins, was responsible for the crowding and he was fined $25 and warned that a repetition of the offense would lead to his suspension. Judge Price made a trip to the jockeys' room after this race and told the boys that in future he would recommend that the license of any guilty of foul riding be revoked. Of the last twenty-eight races only four have been won by favorites, and the defeat of a majority of the first choices has been due to foul riding. George C. Bennett's Terah, by Abe Fnuik Charm, showed a good performance when he won the second race. Edwin II. duplicated his easy victory of Tuesday last when he won the third race, running the mile in 1:40J. Lycurgus' ride on Matabon, the heavily backed favorite for the last race was weak. Jockey Lloyd, who fell off Canopian in the last race yesterday, was found to have suffered a compound fracture of his right ankle. He is in the hospital. Delaby, the apprentice rider, fell off Western this morning and wrenched his back. Jockeys Lycurgus, Shilling and Lee were fined $10 eacii by the starter. J. T. Stewart will ship his two jumpers, Lights Out and Roderick to Saratoga Sunday. Jockey II. Boyle will ride for Stewart at the Spa. W. H. Mosby ships Scarfell and Chippewa to Saratoga tomorrow. Second call on J. McCarthy, who is under contract to Mosby, has been given to W. J. Young for the Saratoga meeting. The stables of J. H. Nichols, J. Hergcnrether and F. A. Libby arrived from Latonia this, morning. C. C. Smithson's Azelina was struck on a knee when Canopian fell yesterday and trainer J. W. ' Pangle is under the impression that he will be unable to get her to the post again. Permission has been given jockey Swain to ride ' Aquiline in the Xiagara Stakes tomorrow. Jockey Club Explains Attitude: Yonkers Dates Approved Only in Deference to the Court's Orders JOCKEY CLUB EXPLAINS ATTITUDE. Yonkers Dates Approved Only in Deference to the Court's Orders. New York, August 2. Horsemen at Brighton Beach today had little to say as to the Empire City meeting. Saratoga will be the destination of all that can afford it. The work of improvement goes on steadily at the Yonkers track. A boat has been, ; i 1 ( , ' ' chartered to transport horses free of cost from the Brighton track to Yonkers Sunday morning. In their communication to the Empire City Trotting Club the stewards make it very plain that the approval of dates for the Yonkers track was forced on them, as the following paragraph of the letter of approval shows: "As stated in our formal communication, in the course we have adopted we are acting in obedience to and out of respect to the decision of the court, although we are informed that said decision is not in accordance with the opinion of the Court of Appeals as to the purpose for which the present racing law was enacted, and we have great solicitude that the holding of this meeting will not be in the best interests of racing." The proof sheets of the program submitted to the .Tockey Club did not conform with the rules and regulations of the club, and it was requested that they be changed so that overnight races for three-year-olds of less than a mile should he limited to not more than one each day, and the amount of added money should be at least as great as indicated ' by the regulations of the Jockey Club. Manager Wimi says that both of these regulations will be observed, and the amount of added money will not be les than $0,000 a day. The application of the Kmpire City club for the services of the Pinkerton agency was met by the reply that the Jockey Club did not control this agency, and that no rule or regulation existed requiring the agency. The stewards, however, interposed no objection to the employment of the Pinkerton agency in policing the grounds. Buffalo, X. Y., August. 2. While his name was among those submitted to the Jockey Club for approval as presiding judge at Empire City track. Judge Price says lie has never been asked to serve at that meeting and that there is no possibility of his doing so. The Brighton Derby is of recent establishment, having first been run in 1901. Its seventh running will take ptace'.thls afternoon. It was firsi run at a mile and a half, but in its second and third years it was" a dash of a mile and a quarter. In 1904 it was restored to its present proper distance and, in i brilliant icrformance that year, Ort Wells set the record of the race, his time being' the fastest ever recorded in a Derby run in this country. Lyne is said to have a bright prospect for cross-country racing in Corliss, now in his training barn' at the Kentucky Association course at Lexington. Corliss lias 'never started but once, and then on the flat and upon that occasion, though defeated,'- showed great speed. He jumps gracefully and easily and lands safely without hangiug. Corliss is a well turned bay gelding by The Pepper, out of Statuette, by Quicklime, and, save one sea-ion, has had comparatively little training. Highrank a Sensible Horse HIGHRANK A SENSIBLE HORSE. Higbrank, II. K. Vingut's four-year-old bay gelding by Silver Fox Carrie C. proved himself a scri-tll)d sort of a horse In the steeplechase at Brighton Beach AVednes'day. When he came to grief and Regan was spilled, Hlglirank followed the' other horses right to the finish. There he pulled up witli the ' others and hunted around among the grooms until he found "the man who had liis bridle.' When he fell he lost that very necessary part of his equipment. King's Gift to His Trainer KING'S GIFT TO HIS TRAINER. At Newmarket recently King Edward sent for his trairidr,- R. Marsh, and congratulated him upon eertain successes achieved with horses in the royal stud. The king remarked' to Marsh: "It is 'no use giving you any more pins," and placing a small package in the trainer's hand, added: "Take this as a little souvenir for your wife." The gift was a handsome brooch in diamonds, representing a race horse at full gallop with the' Jockey 'bearing the roya? colors. A few years ago the king. presented Marsh with' the Coronation medal. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Andy Bhtkeley and Frank Regan both deny the report that the horses in their charge will race at Yonkers. They are both going to Saratoga. Steeplechase jockey Owens, -who had Lis arm broken at Sheepshead Bay, is improving steadily, bntJio will not Ik; able to ride at Saratoga. A. Basset's brown colt, Sir Archibald, by Desmond Arc Light, which won the Chesterfield Stakes uuder the pilotage of Luclen Lyne July 18, is rivaling White Eagle and Prospector for the two-year-old honors of 1907 in England. Prospector is a bay-colt by Pioneer Kendal Belle, and is in the stable of Sir Charles Nugent. White Eagle is a chestnut colt by Galllnuk Merry Gal. Answers to Queries A N S W E RSTOQU E R I ES.
