Kennyetto Wins Easily: Sanford Filly, Heavily Backed, Triumphs in Alabama Stakes KEMYETTO WINS EASILY. SAN FORD FILLY, HEAVILY BACKED, TRIUMPHS IN ALABAMA STAKES. Amsterdam Folks Flock to Saratoga to See the Race De Mimd Runs Thrce-Quar-ters in 1:11 4-5, New Track Record. Saratoga. N. V., August S. The fourth day ot the meeting here v:is marked by renewed interest and i i ten '.-i scil attendance :mil the betting was heavier than tm previous days. The nearby cities anil towns were represented in greater numbers than heretofore. Amsterdam, the home of the Sanfords, sent its quota of visitors in a special train and tlds enthusiastic contingent infused much life into tlie afternoon's sport. The historic Alabama Stakes was the magnet of attraction on the card and it appealed particularly to the up state portion of the race-going public, for John Sanford's highly tried three-year-old filly Keimyetto was to start and the word had been passed at home that she could not lose. Only four Miles fated the starter for the big event -Kcnnyctto, Cold Lady, Yankee Girl and Altuda. The wary and well informed layers, in anticipation of a rush of wagers on the Sanford represtntative, posted S to 5, an absurdly short price, at the opening, but there were few takers until the odds went up to I) to 5. Then the money poured in. Gold Lady was held at 0 to 5 and received steady and persistent support. To the general surprise as good as ."! to 1 was laid against Yankee Girl and what was more astonishing, nolmdy backed the Ellison lilly for a considerable wager except her owner. Altuda was a neglected outsider and bled in the face. Keimyetto was tremendously favored at the start, which was bad. .She outbroke her more slow going or unready opponents a half dozen lengths and that advantage was skillfully manipulated by Nutter throughout the running of the race, lie indulged in waiting tactics and suceeded in fooling Garner on Gold Lady so completely that the hitter did net-wake up in time to make an effect ivve move for victory until too late. Yankee Girl finished a distant third after figuring prominently for seven furlongs. The victory of Keimyetto was greeted witli wildly enthusiastic cheering, reminiscent of the triumphs of .Mohawk II., Molly Kraut. Chuetanunda, and other splendid horses that first saw the light of day at the famous Ilurricaua stud. llorsemeli generally attached more importance to the reappearance of the $45,000 De Mund than to the remainder of the program, even though it in-eluded a famous classic like the Alabama. Alternately acclaimed a champion or a counterfeit I'aul J. Kainey's three-year-old. loyally supported, took the lead at the start, held it all the way and won easily, covering the three-quarters in 1:114. one-lifth tif a second faster than the track record. Xo serious opposition developed from Sewoll. It was only in the last stride that the Ccsarion horse got up for third place. Harney Schreiber's Jack Atkin, the runner-up, easily holding liini safe. The reason for Botanist's inferior showing lies in the fact that his trainer neglected to tie the colt's tongue down, sis he did "when Botanist ran so well at iirightou, and it may be assumed that whenever the trainer Is thoughtful enough to exercise that precaution before sending Mr. llaynian's horse to the post he will reverse today's backward running. The steeplechase was chielly remarkable for the ease with which I'agan Hey executed the task assigned him by his people, for be it known that I'agan l!ey was entrusted with a vast amount of money, backed down from 10 to 1 to I! to 1. Dick Shaw, the receding favorite from evens to 7 to .r, performed his mission as pacemaker for a mile and a half and retired gracefully, leaving I'agan l!ey, Mooksie, I'aprika and Judge (('Gin to pass him. Deuce won the fifth race after a hard closing drive witli Toddles and Telescope. He was cut off and thrown out of his stride in the first quarter. In the last race James K. Keene's beautiful two year-old Incognito, performed like an old stager and when he finished in front of Onatassa and Fort Johnson, he beat two good ones. The Sanford pair closed at odds-on after opening at evens. This last failure spelled financial disaster for a great many. Goldproof and four others were shipped to Yonk-ers this morning. Jessie I.ewisolin and l!ob Rose were big winners on the result of the first four races. It Is said that between tlieni they took $00,000 out of the ring tills afternoon. Probable Saratoga Special Field PROBABLE SARATOGA SPECIAL FIELD. Saratoga, N. Y., August S. Clerk of the Course Frederick Kehberger issued the following ollicial list of probable starters fn Saturday's Saratoga Special: Colin, Lucie, Stamina, Onatassa and Fort Johnson. Black Oak and Chapultepee are doubtful. Colin again showed a satisfactory trial this morning, but experts are of tlie opinion that in view of his recent spell of coughing, even though unaccompanied by any fever, he Is not nor cannot In the nature of things bp as good as before. Even though Mr. Keene's champion starts the belief Is entertained that in Fncle. Stamina or Chapultepee, his possible conqueror may be found. Peter Pan May Never Run Again PETER PAN MAY NEVER RUN AGAIN. Saratoga, N. Y., August S. It if? extremely improbable that Peter Pan will race again this year, if ever. Trainer Howe, it is understood, entertains the belief that an effort to fit him for a race would result In his breaking down, I D. Austin in Trouble at Fort Erie: Warned Away for Pulling Ketchemike-Peter Sterling Sets New Track Record D. AUSTIN IN TROUBLE AT FORT ERIE. Warned Away for Pulling Ketchemike Peter Sterling Sets New Track Record. Ituffalo, N. Y., August S. Jockey R. Austin was indefinitely suspended and ordered away from the Fort Erie track just before the racing began this afternoon. The order followed an investigation into the running of Mode Nicol's two-year-old Ketchemike, which won the second race yesterday under the pilotage of jockey Shilling. Austin had ridden Ketchemike in his previous race and was unplaced. Owner NIcol complained to tlie ollieials that Austin had not ridden to win. It developed that Austin had a big wager on Hit! colt yesterday and that lie had told several persons that Ketchemike could not lose. All but tine of the winners scored witli plenty in reserve. In the feature race, the mile and an eighth handicap, Peter Sterling established a new Canadian record for the distance by running in l:."li, which was a full second faster than the previous track record. Peter Sterling was ridden by Maliu, trailed tlie others for five furlongs, then went to the front with a rush and won easily by five lengths. George C. Bennett viewed tlie running of the fourth race with much satisfaction, his home-bred colt. Petulant, winning with great ease and defeating among others the highly tried C. W. P.urt, a colt that has been rated by his people as a $15,000 youngster. 1'. M. Civill has sold Monterey to K. ITtterbacl: while F. Ilolmau purchased of K. Stringer the horse Vagabond. Tlie latter will be schooled for steeplechasing. T. Dycer shipped his stable to Washington this morning where he will rest up for a couple of weeks before continuing on his journey to Norfolk. M. Gorman, P. Delaney and A. 13. Gates will leave here some time next week for Quebec, where a two days' meeting will be given previous to the opening of the meeting at Montreal. A party numbering about fifty left tonight for the Empire City track. Among them were jockeys J. Lee. L. Williams and 1). Kiley. Shilling, Ly-turgus and W. Ott will probably go tomorrow. Rees Will Not Preside at Yonkers: Vila May Accept the Position-Otherwise Ready for Opening Saturday REES WILL NOT PRESIDE AT YONKERS Vila May Accept the Position Otherwise Ready for Opening Saturday. New York, August 8. The Empire City plant, witli the exception of clearing away tlie litter left by the workmen making -the improvements, is rf-ady for the racing which will begin Saturday. There are 310 horses at the track and ninety-three others are expected to arrive from Ituflalo during tlie next twenty-four hours. It is said about 350 are quartered at Morris l'ark. It is expected that 100 fielders will be on the line tlie opening day and seventy-five layers are slated to operate in tlie big ring, says ring manager Arthur Elrod. Captain J. II. Rccs was at the course this afternoon and had a conference witli .Tames I'.utler and Manager Winn. After the chat Mr. Winn stated that Mr. I Sees had announced that he could not serve as presiding judge. It is thought Joseph Vila will fill the position. Carthage will be a starter in the opening race Saturday and L. Williams will ride him. Trying Out a New Rule TRYING OUT A NEW RULE. Saratoga, N. Y., August S. The new regulation which assesses a fine ot $10 before permisison will lie granted to lead a horse to the post, is being tried out here. All applications must be made to the paddock judge, when the stewards will pass upon them. There are grave doubts as to tin; success of such a move. It looks to be an injustice .to ask a man to pay $10 to have a really fractioiis horse led to the post, and at the same time it puts a premium on tlie use of stimulants. Some trainers might be tempted to take a chance, knowing that the package would lie lauded safely at the lxist, for the principle of those inclined to-such tactics is that the horse may be inclined to run away going to the post. With the danger of this removed there would be more inclination to make a change. However, the regulation does not provide that a request must always be granted, and it is within the province of the stewards to refuse any and all such applications. So far it is merely a regulation of tin; association, but on the working of it here depends its continuance at tlie other tracks. Just Drop the First Figures JUST DROP THE FIRST FIGURES. "There's a hunch," remarked one of tlie visitors at the Yonkers track a day or two ago, as he pointed to the result board in the betting ring. The board carried the numbers 14-15-1(5. "There's a tip on the first race tif the meeting." "Think soV" said P.oasberg, who was standing by. "Well, yon can bet ;me. I'd like to lay a little something that there'll be no such numbers in that or any other race." "Broadway Alex" Smith Under Ban "BROADWAY ALEX" SMITH UNDER BAN Saratoga, N. Y., August S. "I'.roadway Alex" Smith, a famous ball player, formerly a catcher for the New York Club, was warned off the Saratoga race course today. The local stewards took this action only after a thorough investigation, which revealed that Smith had been guilty of tampering witli jockeys that have been riding on metropolitan tracks. Increase Purses at Fort Erie INCREASE PURSES AT FORT ERIE. Buffalo, N. Y., August S. Horsemen were agreeably surprised when the announcement was made that on and after Monday next no purse of less than $100 will be given at Fort Erie. This is intended to counteract the efforts of the Empire City folks to induce owners to ship to the Yonkers track. Parmer Changes Sale Date PARMER CHANGES SALE DATE. Buffalo. N. Y., August S. Peter Knight met with much interference on the backstretch, where he was shuffled back, but finished fast and gamely under punishment. Tyrolian and Webber were much used in forcing and setting the early pace and tired in the stretch. Edwin II. was caught in a jam at tlie start and was as good as left.
