The Huron is another of the list of minor stakes established at Saratoga in 1901. FOUR FAVORITES WIN AND PUBLIC HAS ANOTHER GOOD DAY. . i Cederstrome Comes Back From His Victory of Tuesday and Takes the Chappaqua Handicap Lee's Bad Ride. New York, August 14. Today's attendance nt empire City track was the largest excepting on the opening day. There was little contention in most of the races, the winners having comparatively easy sailing to lead their opponents to the finish. J. Lee's ride on Hollow, the receding second choice in the third race, was sharply criticized. The colt bad worked over the track five furlongs in 1:00, but was not allowed to display much speed, Lee being content to trail in back of the heavily supported Inauguration. Near the end he lost second place to Miss Mazzoni. A delegation of sharpshooters from the west scored heavily by Inauuguration's win. Cederstrome, penalized five pounds for winning yesterday, repeated and took the Chappaqua Handicap at one mile in 1:40, a track record for the distance in a race. The connections of Woolstone made a big killing by that horse's victory in the closing race. The transportation facilities on all lines leading to the track have been greatly improved. Forty minutes was the average time to reach the track from the Central depot. e. R. Thomas, who was among today's visitors said after observing the big attendance "racing in August in these parts is just as much a necessity as at any other time and one needs no further confirmation of tills than a glance at the big crowd here." Conforming strictly to the rule laid down by the Jockey Club to prevent poolrooms obtaining advance information is causing no end of grumbling from the layers as they are restricted sometimes to only ten minutes business on a race on account of failure to obtain jockeys and scratches. W. Shields will sell at auction Saturday next several horses, including Servile, Diamond and ' Onatas. The field has been extended sixty feet by moving one of the fences nearer the . big ring. This will accommodate 2,7i00 more' persons. The stewards caused the following notice to be posted this afternon in the jockeys' room: "Any jockey found in the betting ring will be fined, suspended or ruled off." "Broadway Alec" Smith, who was denied the privileges of the Saratoga track, came to Yonkers from the Spa. but was told that his room was more desirable than his company. The horses in the stable of R. L. Thomas arrived from Fort Brie sick and Harcourt is in a dangerous' condition. The long time on the cars and the heat Is the cause. Riley Grannan is among the bookmakers In line here. Grenesque the Medium of a Coup: Cornell's Filly is Backed Heavily at Fort Erie and throughout the Country GRENESQUE THE MEDIUM OF A COUP. Cornell's Filly Is Backed Heavily at Fort Erie and Throughout the Country. Buffalo, N. Y., August 14. Bathmaria and Whisk Broom were the only outstanding favorites to win at Fort Frio today; but that does not mean that the bookmakers laid up anything on the afternoon's racing. One of the biggest coups of the year Was put through when Grenesque, from the barn of I). Cornell, got home a length in front of McQulddy, the favorite in- the second race, which was for maiden two-year-olds. This filly was backed from 20 to 1 to 0 to 1 at the track and it is claimed that thousands of dollars were taken out of poolrooms and handbooks throughout the country. Jockey E. Martin returned today from empire City, having been denied permission to ride until he had secured a license from the Jockey Club. Gipsano, .t. Clay's good jumper, broke down in yesterday's race and will not start again in many moons, both tendons in his front legs being bowed. A number of horses got In today from Windsor. Denham showed a little improvement today. Mr. Hendrie has hopes of his pulling through. Coouey K. and Tyrolian are now in the stable of J. W. Burttscbell. W. II. Moshy has secured from the Kirkfield Stable the contract on the services of jockey Quarrington. After an interview with Judge Price, jockey Aubuclion has decided to journey on to Yonkers. Steeplechase jockey Patsy Gallagher arrived yesterday from Saratoga. Trainer A. B. Stansbury, who was kicked by one of the horses in his stable a few days ago, has lieen discharged from the hospital and is now at his home at Fort Brie. Building New Course at Arcadia: Large Force is Engaged Under Direction of "Lucky" Baldwin to Rush the Work BUILDING NEW COURSE AT ARCADIA. Large Force Is Engaged Under Direction of "Lucky" Baldwin to Rush the Work. Unless there has been a hitch in the plans at Los Angeles the work of grading the new track at Arcadia is now In progress. "Work will begin Monday morning at Arcadia and 100 teams will be started bright and early to building the track whereon it is planned to hold a winter race meeting, beginning Thanksgiving Day," says the Los Angeles evening News of Saturday. ".'Lucky' Baldwin has telegraphed these' instructions and the teams are ready to begin the work that will complete the track without delay. "One of the Interested parties in the Arcadia proposition, a horseman of wealth, now is on his way to New York to meet George Bose when he arrives from Burope. The bookmaker either lias sailed for America or will sail within a few days and should arrive in Los Angeles within a fortnight. He is to be the leading spirit in the Arcadia race meeting and unless the plans whereby Rose and his associates are to become associated with Baldwin in building the racing plant shall fail at the last moment, racing will be conducted on the Baldwin Park grounds next winter and this meeting will bo the successor to the Ascot winter meeting. "There is nothing unreasonable in such a proposition. In fact, it is the only reasonable outcome of the hard fight against racing in Los Angeles. It begins to appear as impossible for the Los Angeles Jockey Club to hold its winter meeting at Ascot. The courts have decided against such a proposition In the annexation litigation and the Supreme Court cannot render a decision before October, which would be too late for the Jockey Club to fill its stakes, if the decision should be favorable. The city council and mayor are believed to be against the proposition. With these facts plainly in evidence, the local race promoters must look elsewhere for a location that will ho near to Los Angeles and yet free of the possibility , of official Interference. "Arcadia offers the best chance and when the local promoters seized upon it, they made a wise move. At Arcadia it will he possible to conduct race meetings until the legislature meets, at least. Ample transportation facilities will be provided, say those interested, and a low round-trip rate will be provided. These facts are dwelt upon at length by the spokesman for the proposed new jockey club and lie is authority for the statement that Hose and Baldwin, representing the two parties to the proposed plans, will have all plans completed and the Jockey Club and racing association formed just as soon as Rose returns from europe. That there is justification for the statement that Baldwin and Rose will be the leaders in the new enterprise is proved in the recent statement of Baldwin to the effect that the Baldwin Racing Association would be reorganized and include wealthy turfmen in its directory." Maryland People to Build Track: Too Many Outsiders Bought Stock in Hale Thorpe Proposition and a Shift is Made MARYLAND PEOPLE TO BUILD TRACK. Too Many Outsiders Bought Stock in Hale-thorpe Proposition and a Shift Is Made. Baltimore, Md., August 14. The movement instituted last year by the Maryland Jockey Club to build a new mile and an eighth track at Halethorpe on the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad between this city and Washington, has fallen through, but a new one has been set afoot. Such contributions as were sent in by subscribers to the stock for the new enterprise are being returned with interest. The obi scheme fell through because it was found when the situation was canvassed thoroughly that there were too many people not residents of Mary-, land taking stock, every Tom, Dick and narry in racing seemed to have a piece of It. Baltimore folk felt naturally that such a venture should be controlled by Marylanders. The promoters of the enterprise feared that if they went ahead and built their track in defiance of local sentiment an influence inimical to racingt might be aroused. Baltimore folk and farmers of Maryland interested in the thoroughbred will dominate the new venture, and the promoters have little doubt that they will succeed in getting sufficient money in a few months to enable them to construct a handsome plant. A systematic effort will be made to revive the old-time interest of local people in the sport of kings. It has not been so very long since Baltimore was one of the best racing towns in the country. Baltimore track has been the scene of some of the most brilliant contests in the history of the turf. The attitude of the voters and lawmakers of Maryland toward racing has always been favorable. Pimlico has never asked anything of the legislature that has not been promptly and willingly, granted. Laying for the Layers LAYING FOR THE LAYERS. On the first afternoon of racing at the empire City track an automobile with five men raced down Riverside Drive at pretty good speed. A bicycle .policeman caught the automobile after a chase. "You'll have to go to the station," he puffed. "We've just returned from the track and we've got important business," pleaded one of the men. "We didn't think we were going so fast." "Are you bookmakers?" asked the cop. "No, we're professional men," said the spokesman. "All right," said the bicycle man. "You can go. But before the afternoon is over I am going to get a bunch of bookmakers. They got all my money once and I'm going to get square." Commission to Meet Tomorrow COMMISSION TO MEET TOMORROW. Lexington, Ky., August 14. A meeting of the State Racing Commission to allot the fall dates for the local track, Louisville and Latonia, has been called for Friday. It Is generally believed now that the schedule of dates arranged at the conference of track representatives will be adopted by the commission, though some express the opinion that there will be a cut to fifteen days at Louisville and twenty days at Latonia. Douglas Park Deal is Off DOUGLAS PARK DEAL IS OFF. New York, August 14. John Ilachmelstcr was among today's visitors at Yonkers. He had a conference with Matt J. Winn. He said that the deal for Douglas Park by the Kentucky State Fair management has for the present fallen through. Mr. Ilachmelstcr will leave tomorrow for a short tour through europe. No Service from Seattle NO SERVICE FROM SEATTLE. Good Chance for a Bill in Virginia: Folks in the Old Dominion Want to Regain Old-Time Prestige in Racing GOOD CHANCE FOR A BILL IN VIRGINIA Folks in the Old Dominion Want to Regain Old-time Prestige in Racing. Saratoga, N. Y., August 14. Virginians at Saratoga say that if the breeders of the Old Dominion will make a fight for a racing bill uuder the leadership of men like Henry T. Oxnard, Rozier Dulany, Hunter G. Breckenridge, Captain R. J. Hancock and Dr. James Kerr they will have no trouble In getting one through the coming legislature at Richmond. Virginia was the original home of the American thoroughbred. The great stock farms which used to supply American tracks with the fleetest runners were broken up during the war, but Virginia has recovered from the war and is waxing wealthy once more. With returnlng.wealth there Is a growing desire to revive the oldtime glories of the Old Dominion in a breeding and racing way among her patriotic sons. The establishment by Mr. Oxnard of Blue Ridge Stud, witli Its highly bred stallions and mares, in Fauquier County, has opened the eyes of people of, all parts of the state to the importance of encouraging other breeders to invest, as the retired major lias, in land and stock. It is generally agreed that the best -method of encouraging breeders to Invest in Virginia land is to give race meetings at the most Important towns in the state Richmond, Norfolk, Alexandria and Roanoke. The building of a first-class race-course at Alex-andrla to take the place of the antiquated and poorly equipped Bennlng plant, would be a great boon to horsemen. The Bennlng course is poorly situated, the stables unhealthy, the track is smajl, and the going is so deep a man does not care to train and race a first-class horse through It. There is plenty of waste land about Alexandria which could be bought cheaply to build a great track upon. And Alexandria Is as easy of access to the people of Washington as Is Bennlng itself. Apperson Judge at Norfolk APPERSON JUDGE AT NORFOLK. Memphis, Tenn., August 14. S. 31. Apperson', who for several years was in the stand at Montgomery Park and other tracks, has been appointed presiding judge for the meeting which Is to open at Norfolk, Va., August 22. w Colin's Seventh Victory: Champion Two-Year-Old Takes the Grand Union Hotel Stakes COIIN'S SEVENTH YICTORY. CHAMPION TWO-YEAR-OLD TAKES THE GRAND UNION HOTEL STAKES. His Net Earnings to Date Foot Up $71,801 Nealon Wins the Handicap Paprika Repeats in Steeplechase. Saratoga, N. Y., August 14. Colin, .Tames It. Krone's undefeated two-year-old son of Commando and I'astorella, scored Ills seventh victory when he cantered home with the Grand Union Hotel Stakes this afternon. It was the seventh running of the Crand Union, which has a fixed value of $10,000, and there were six starters. Colin and Masque being coupled as Mr. Keene's entry, and Chapnltepec, Ben Fleet, Jim GafTney and Smoker, essaying to give the champion a contest. It was a foregone conclusion that Colin would win and when 1 to fi was posted at the opening of the betting it was eagerly taken. In spots there was as good as 1 to .J, but not for long. Few if any got on a wager at that figure. The colt went to the post at 1 to S. Masque was not regarded by the bookmakers to have much of a chance to fill one of the places and for second anil third she was quoted separately in the betting. Chapnltepec was regarded as the horse most likely to finish second, and he found a strong following, but disappointed bis backers. Jim Oaffney, which was second to Fair 1'lay in the Flash Stakes, was overlooked by all save the Snlli-vun-Fnrrell-Johnson combination and in backing him for the place and to show they must have profited handsomely. There was a tedious delay of five minutes at the post, but starter Cassbly finally caught them In good alignment and they went away with Chapnltepec showing in front, but not for long. Knapp rushed .lim Oaffney to the front and set a fast pace, with Miller restraining Colin a head back of him to the stretch, at which point they were all bunched with the exception of Smoker, the lone trailer. Here .Miller let Colin have his head and the champion strided away from the others with characteristic ease, reaching the finish with a margin of two lengths over Jim GalTney, which was three lengths before lien Fleet. Chapnltepec was done for when they came to the stretch and dropped hack to fifth position, Masque beating him out by a head. Colin ran the three-quarters of a mile in 1:13, which is the record for the race, the best previous time being King Hanover's l:iaj with 110 pounds, seventeen pounds less than Colin carried today. This victory brings Colin's net winnings to the magnificent sum of $71,801. The Hopeful Stakes, to be run Saturday, appear to be safely his, and this will add another $15,000 or more to bis earnings. He has, in addition to the rich Futurity, which is to lie run at Slieepsbead Bay August :tl, many valuable engagements, and it should not be surprising if be is the third horse in the history of the American turf to win as much or more than $100,000 as a two-year-old. The only two horses to achieve this distinction were David Gideon's His Highness, with a credit of $109,400 in 1S91, and James It. Keene's Domino, with $170,S90. The only other horse that ever won as much as a two year-old as Colin has already taken was Potomac with $7S,4C0 to his credit in 1890. Nealon, which is to be sold in the Darnell dispersal sale Saturday, carried top weight in the handicap which came fourth on the card, led from the half-mile ground to the finish, running the mile :md three-sixteenths in 1 :;"K2, and easing up eight lengths in front of Golf Ball and I'enarris, which were noses apart eight lengths in front of the tiring Yankee Girl., The first race went easily "to the odds-on favorite. Marbles. Paprika, heavily hacked, had no trouble In winning the steeplechase from Sandalwood and Goldllcur, his only opponents. The fifth race had nn exciting finish with an unexpected result. At the end Zlpango, Jersey Lady and Prince Hampton were noses apart, with the heavily backed Green Real a distant fourth. Cressina, neglected in the betting, made a runaway affair of the closing race, getting home six lengths in front of the heavily backed Danoscara from the Sanford barn. William Lakeland is fcere with Felix Isman's thrce-year-ohl electioneer, the winner of the Futurity and Brighton Produce Stakes last season, electioneer is not here to race, however. He is breathing fine upland air and drinking Saratoga rejuvenating waters. After working brilliantly for his fast race at Gtnvescnd, electioneer trained off. Ho became so nervous and fretful he ran miserably In the Suburban Handicap and Coney Island Jockey Club Stakes ;u Sheepshead Bay, although in the Standard at Brooklyn he forced Peter Pan to do bis best to win. After electioneers failure in the Coney Island Stakes, Lakeland retired him in the hope he might eome to hand again in the autumn. electioneer is doing excellently at Saratoga and the Brighton turfman expects him to make a high-class showing nt Sheepshead Hay in September.- It is possible that electioneer may race once here before starting for Sheepshead Ray. The stake blanks for the fall meeting at Pimllco hnvo been distributed among the horsemen and a number will race in Baltimore tills fall who heretofore have" held strictly to the metropolitan circuit. One of ' the features of the meeting will be the steeplechases, one each day being the promise of the management. . The many friends of Alex Shields in Montreal will be sorry to learn that he Is still confined to bis house at Bound Brook and is far from being tl well man. Paprika's victory today makes twenty-two races trainer Mike Daly has won for J. W. Colt this season. John Condon has arrived from Chicago for a stay of ten days. He is accompanied by bis wife and children. It is said that Woodford Clay, when asked to put a price on Nimbus, said $20,000 might tempt him to part with the son of Star Shoot. Mooksie and The Doctor have joined the list of cripples. Mooksie may race again, but there is doubt if Tlie Doctor will ever face the starter another time.
