A cablegram from Dublin yesterday brought the announcement that Orby will not start In the race for the great St. Leger at Doncaster September 11. It is said that the colt Is suffering from a strained tendon, and on the advice of a veterinary surgeon Richard Croker has decided not to send him to the post. Dr. McCahe, who is Mr. Croker's stud manager, is quoted as having said: "There is no chance of having Orby right for the WSt. Leger. He must have rest, and he Is getting It. He is much better than he was, but he came back from Liverpool all wrong. A veterinary surgeon who saw him pronounced him suffering from a leg,' and he could never he trained again. But against this Is the fact that his leg was far worse when he first came under ray charge, and yet he was trained and won the two Derbys English and Irish. I feel confident, should the treatment I want to give him and am giving him he not Interfered i with, and he is properly cared for in his gallops, I Hint Orby will he out again in even better form 1han he was on Derby day this year. Nobody yet knows how good Orhy is, hut he had 'a leg' before I got, 'him." Jim Gaffney, Frank J. Farrell's Useful Young Racer JIM GAFFNEY, FRANK J. FARRELL'S USEFUL YOUNG RACER. Jim Gaffney's victory In the Albany Handicap at Saratoga yesterday stamps that young son of Golden Carter Miss Maxim a rare good mud runner and is further evidence of the fact that Frank J. Farrell has in him a useful racer, if not a coming star. Jim Caffney was bred at the Rancho del Paso Stud in California and was sold to Mr. Farrell as a yearling in June, 1000, for $3,500. To date lie lias started in seven races and has won $22,375 net. His first start was at Sheepshead Ray in an over-night race June 25, when he was unplaced. He got none of the money the second time he started, but ran in improving form. In his third start he was second to Woodford Clay's good colt Nimbus. Then came his second to Fair Play in the Flash Stakes and this was followed by his second to Colin in the Grand Union and then his victory in the Hopeful Stakes last Saturday. In these races Jim Gaffney has shown himself to be a better horse than was his full brother, Golden Maxim, at the same age in 1002 and Golden Maxim was a rapid runner. He was owned by J. P. Kraner, but because of bad legs his career on the turf was brief, covering only the seasons of 1!)02 and 1003, In which he won four races, was second three times, third once and took $22,010 out of sixteen starts. He is now in the stud at II. T. Oxnard's Blue Ridge Farm in Virginia. As a two-year-old Golden Maxim was second to Mexican in the First Tart of the Double Event, won the Zephyr Stakes, was third for the Prospect Handicap and won the Great Eastern, in which he took the measure of Africander after a game struggle. As a three-year-old his winning races were an over-night affair and the Islip Handicap, hut in finishing second to Whorler for the Brooklyn Derby and to Africander In the Lawrence Realization, when that mighty horse broke all records for the mile and five-eighths by running ii in 2:451, lie gave undisputed evidence of having inherited the good qualities of a long line of illustrious progenitors, which are named in the following tabulated pedigree of his younger brother: l Stockwell ( The Baron. f Doncaster Pocahontas. ,.; I (Marigold ( Teddington. o f Bend Or - ( Sis. to Singapore. Miss Maxim, the dam, was a good winner as a two-year-old, scoring seven victories. She is a full sister to Principle, a good horse in his day. Ventura, the second dam, also threw Bismarck, Tytura, Ventoro, Wallenstein and Profitable, and she was a full sister to Ben Ali and Memento. Memento won the Hopeful, Flash, Spinaway, Autumn, Central and Chesapeake Stakes and lias given the turf a nuraler of good winners and producers, including Lady Lindsey. Ulrica, the third dam, .is the grandam of Spin-away, one of the best mares that the American turf has ever known. Goldsn Garter, as a four-year-old in 1002, was one of the best handicap horses in England, nis sire ami ids grandsire were winners of the Derby, and his half brother, Sainfoin, won the Derby and sired the Derby winner, Rock Sand, for which August Belmont gave .$125,000. There is speed and stamina galore in the pedigree of Jim Gaffney and If he encounters no afflictions and is properly handled he will surely give his owner returns far above the average. Jim Gaffney's remaining August engagements are the United States Hotel Stakes, Saturday; the Adirondack Handicap, Wednesday, and the Futurity, a Aveek from Saturday. It is not to be expected that, with his burden of 130 pounds, lie will beat Colin witli Ills 125 pounds for the Futurity, hut it is not improbable that he will fill one of tlie two money positions behind the champion. St. Jeanne Only Winning Favorite: G. Swain Fined and Suspended for Rough Riding-V. Powers' Circus Stunt ST. JEANNE ONLY WINNING FAVORITE. G. Swain Fined and Suspended for Rough Riding V. Powers' Circus Stunt. Buffalo, N. Y., August 21. Despite the fact that St. Jeanne was the only decided favorite to win at Fort Erie, It is doubtful if the books laid up anything on this afternoon's transactions, as all tlie winners were heavily supported. The first race furnished the best contest of the day, the finish resulting in a hard drive lietween Edgely and Rather Royal, in which the former was victor by tlie smallest of margins. In all the other races tlie winners had plenty to spare at the end. There was some rough riding during the afternoon in which jockey G. Swain played a star part. In the lirst race he cut off Toddles soon after the start and sent the latter to lier knees. For this he was fined $25. In the third race just as the barrier was sprung Swain rushed Laniptrimmer adross to the inside, causing a Jiasty jam. In the mixup V. Powers, who had the mount on Charley Ward, was bounced off his horse on to the back of Tagane, but in some miraculous manner he scrambled back into Charley Ward's saddle again. It was as great a piece of circus riding as was ever witnessed on a race track. Both Tagane and Charley Ward were as good as left at the post, and the remarkable race that Tagane ran showed clearly that she would certainly have been a dangerous contender witli an equal start. Swain was this time fined .$50, and as an additional punishment was suspended for five days. The Goldhlatt stable furnished two of the defeated favorites in Toddles and Stylit. The former's defeat was in a measure due to the Interference which she suffered in the early stages. Toddles, however, was on her had behavior at the post and tlie assistant starter found it necessary to remove tlie blinkers to get her to break. Arrivals at Montreal Track ARRIVALS AT MONTREAL TRACK. Montreal, Quebec, August 21. The stables of John Dyment and J. J. Walsh, numbering twenty-one horses, have arrived at Blue Bonnets track. In the Dyment lot is the two-year-old Uncle Toby. Lexington, Ky., August 21. Peter Pan arrived here last night from Saratoga and was 'turned out today at James R. Keene's Castleton Stud. The famous colt stood the trip well and with careful handling it is hoped he will soon recover from the ailment that caused his sudden retirement from tlie turf. In seventeen starts this year and last year Peter Pan was only three times unplaced. He won ten races, was second three times and third once, and his total net winnings in stakes and purses foot up $110,450. His six victories this year were the Belmont, Standard, Brooklyn Derby, Tidal, Advance and Brighton Handicap. With Peter Pan came August Belmont's Don Diego (a half-brother to Beldame), and Six o'clock, the two-year-old half-sister to Ort Wells and Dick Welles. Trainer Watkins' Big Day: Texas Turfman Saddles Four Winners and a Second at Yonkers TRAINER WATKINS' BIG DAY TEXAS TURFMAN SADDLES FOUR WINNERS AND A SECOND AT YONKERS. Little Sumter Rides Three to Victory-Quadrille Lucky in the Feature Race Bookmakers Get a Jolt. New York, August 21. Trainer Watkins had a banner day at Empire City track. He saddled four of the winners and one second. Incidentally jockey Sumter, the diminutive sixty-seven pounder, shared some of the honors by riding three of the Watkins trained horses to victory. Quadrille, which was beaten off in his last start, took tlie feature, the, Katonah Handicap, from Carthage and Light Wool. He was aided considerably by good racing luck. Carthage was best and with a better rider would have won. Tlie talent recouped some of their recent losse3, giving the 100 layers a severe jolt over the victories of Manlieimer, Taunt, Quadrille, Alpenmarcben and Flavigny. Aunt Rose was also extensively supported. Kohnofiaw in the closing race was apparently best, hut Sumpter lost Control of Flavigny and allowed her to sharply cut across tlie Ferriss representative at a critical period. A claim of foul against the winner was not allowed. ' Today's visitors included II. K. Knapp, member of tlie State Racing Commission. He expressed surprise at tlie magnitude of the" plant and the large crowd. M. L. Hayman's horses arrived yesterday from Saratoga and will be raced, here. Jay Swif ti owJCdLhyFra nk . Arthur, died this morning -after being exercised. R. L. Thomas left hurriedly tonight for Cincinnati on receipt of a. telegram announcing the death of his brother's wife,. M. J. Winn distributed the first stake blanks to horsemen this afternoon for both New Orleans tracks. T. A. Fullum has moved his horses over to the Empire City track from Sheepshead Bay. Kercheval is reported to be working fast at Sheepshead Bay. Fred Cook stated today that he had secured the pick of yearlings by The Commoner. He has already expended $40,000 for yearlings and will buy more during the fall sales. Princess Titania is Now Retired: End of the Turf Career of J. D. Millin's Honest and Serviceable Racer PRINCESS TITANIA IS NOW RETIRED. End of the Turf Career of J. D. Millin's Honest and Serviceable Racer. Princess Titania, the nine-year-old bay mare hy Masetto Queen-Titania, was so badly cut down in the closing race at Seattle last Friday that J. D. Milllu, Jier owner, says her usefulness as a racing tool is at an end. Recently he was offered $1,500 for her for breeding purposes and now that a tendon in one of her hind legs has been completely severed he will probably sell her. The injury to the mare, it is said, was due to "Cricket" Kelly's old trick or weaving in and out of the field. Princess Titania was one of the most consistent performers on the turf, having earned money in seventy per cent, of the 145 races in . which she started during eight years of running. Sprinting was her game and she was good at it. Three-quarters of a mile was her favorite distance and It was no trick at all for her to run it any day In better than 1:14, her fastest time being 1:121. . With the exception of two. at Brighton Beach and one at Gravesend in the summer of 1904, Princess Titania ran all of her races on the Pacific Coast. She- ran six races at Ascot Park and two at "Seattle. The remainder, 134, were run at the San Francisco meetings. Princess Titania was first owned by A. J. Stemler and won her lirst race for him at Oakland on Christmas day in 1900. The following year she became the property of the late Ccasar Yonng. J. D. Millin bought her from Young in December 1902. The Follansbee Highweight Handicap and the Adam Andrew Selling Stakes were her most notable victories. Her best race at a mile was her second to Bearcatchcr when that speedy son of St. George won the Crocker Selling Stakes at Oakland, December 9, 1905, in 1:3SJ. The following is a table of Princess Titania's performances and winnings: Year. Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. She Is large, but a superb individual. From her muzzle to her heels her conformation is almost perfect. She could not run in the going Saturday, but will be tough company for the best of her age when she strikes a track that just suits her." Muddy Track at Saratoga: Jim Gaffney Takes Albany Handicap in Runaway Fashion MUDDY TRACK-AT SARATOGA JIM GAFFNEY TAKES ALBANY HANDICAP IN RUNAWAY FASHION. Amanda H. the First Winning Favorite Since Saturday Main Chance Wins the Mile Handicap Fleming Scores. Saratoga, X. Y., August 21. Rain anil mud caused many withdrawals and detracted much from the sport here today. However, from the standpoint of the speculatively Inclined anions the race-goers, the results were generally more satisfactory than on the previous two days, inasmuch as two outstanding favorites won. Flunk J. FarrelPs Jim Caffney, coming hack fresh and good after his victory in the Hopeful Stakes on Saturday, picked up ids harden of 123 pounds as if It was a feather, reveled in the muddy going, spreadeagled his nine opponents and won the Alhany Handicap In a canter hy six lengths, .Magazine taking second place easily from Master Kobert, n fast going third after closing a lilg gap. Fort Johnson, tlie crack youngster from the San ford barn finished last and demonstrated clearly that mud Is not his game. He was oil" in front but dropped hack at once and could not extend himself at all. Big Chief, one of the brag colts from the Newcastle Stable, ran well up until he reached the stretch and then tired. The running of Smoker and Sir Cleges was particularly disappointing. The latter had good support, it being the presumption that mud was his forte. A. S. Labours Chulita, hailed as a crackerjack after her victory in the Cincinnati Trophy at Latonia .Inly ft, whipped in the Mohawk Stakes at Buffalo and again here Monday a week ago, could do no better than third In the opening race today, the long shots, Hal and Sagulne, heating her out In a drive. However, she ran a game race and there are excuses for her In that she could not concede the weight in such going as she encountered. Hal's victory was a genuine surprise. He jumped into the lead at once and held it to the end. At one stage he was six lengths in front and it appeared lie would make a runaway affair of it. There was a shout of joy when Amanda II. won the steeplechase, the daughter of King of Coins being the lirst outstanding favorite to win since lie Mund's victory in the closing race last Saturday. Kernel fell at the lirst jump and Lights Out made the running until they were over the twelfth obstacle. Amanda II., which up to this stage of the race had been held in reserve, was sent up and from there to the end it was barely more than a matter of riding and cantering for her. Okenite failed miserably in the handicap at a mile. There was never a iieriod at which he was dangerous and ho was Anally a beaten off last. The lirst and second positions were tilled by horses owned in Canada by the president and secretary of the Ontario Jockey Club respectively. Mr. Seagram's Main Chance trailed the others until the vtretch was readied, saved ground on the turn, moved up decisively and won going away by three lengths from the tiring Tourenne, the racing qualities of which recently passed from the Kirklield Stable to W. P. Fraser J. O. Keene's Red Leaf, the receding favorite for the fifth, ran an unaccountably bad race and got no part of the money. Such going as that of today is admittedly to her liking. There surely must be something radically wrong with her. Sam Lazarus' Right Royal, heavily backed by the wise brigade, scored an easy victory over Lally, which, most probably because Miller was in the saddle, Itad some suport at fours. Use of the blue pencil left only Fleming and .Tack Atkin to contest the closing race at seven-eighths of a mile and the public selected the wrong one. Fleming has Improved steadily since lie finished behind Jack Atkin in the race I)e Mund won on the fourth day of the meeting and Schreiber's colt was no match for liiin today. Fleming led him by three lengths for nearly the entire journey and won easily. Many of the Kentuckians backed W. J. Young's gelding and took a considerable sum from the bookmakers. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AUGUST 22, 1007. Fort Johnson Sanford's Best FORT JOHNSON SANFORD'S BEST. Saratoga, N. Y., August 21. When the Messrs. Snn ford arrived here from the Hurricana Farm with their horses, they were inclined to think that Ona-tassa, a son of Isidor and Rockwater, was their smartest two-year-old. They have changed their opinion, however. Fort Johnson now occupies a higher place iu the estimation of both General Stephen Sanford and his son John than does the doughty chestnut. Ouatassa must not be hastily condemned, however. He is a singularly comely colt and ho has a fine turn of speed. But he Is still green and he docs not know what to do. If liis public form is not misleading, Onatassa will make a creditable long-distance runner." Claim No Record for Old Honesty CLAIM NO RECORD FOR OLD HONESTY. New York, August 21. The claim was made at Empire City track today that Old Honesty is not entitled to credit of an American record of 1:43J for one mile and one hundred yards in his race yesterday. The contention is that the start was made at the mark for one mile and seventy yards instead of one mile and one hundred yards. The matter is being investigated by the stewards.
