HITCHCOCK HORSE WINS THIS HANDICAP FOR THE SECOND TIME. Vails Is Roughly Treated Cook Scores a Big Coup with Lawrence P. Daley End of the Saratoga Season. Saratoga, X. Y., August 20. The Saratoga Association's meeting of twenty-two days ended tills afternoon. It was highly successful and profitable, the plashing of the dates with those at the Yonkers track notwithstanding. It was demonstrated early that racing at New York had practically no. effect on the gate receipts here. The exodus to New-York began early in the week, but despite this interest and attendance was sustained to the end and today's patronage was generous. The feature of the card today was the Champlain Handicap at one mile and an eighth, which was won for the second time by V. It. Hitchcock's Dandelion in a thrilling finish with Vails and Oxford. Vails was best and would have won had she not been herded before the start, and pocketed during the running. At the post Dandelion and Oxford bumped and shoved her about until she was In a high state of excitement and during the llrst .sixteenth of the race Badtkc, who was riding Dandelion, continually flourished his whip before her iuid seemingly striking her in tiie face a time or two. John Sanford complained bitterly of the treatment accorded bis highly strung and nervous filly. The tabled history of the Chainiilain Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt Jockey. Val. Fred Cook's Johnnie Blake was a heavily backed favorite, hut he broke slowly and never seriously menaced John Sanfoni's Fort Johnson, the second choice, which led all the way and won by four lengths. No one takes Johnnie Rlake's local races seriously. With the exception of Tom Dolan possibly, Fred Cook's horses have been set down as inconsistent and their running has evoked much unpleasant criticism. To many close observers even Tom Dolan's last race had a queer look. F. A. Clark's Maximilian won the steeplechase easily from Lights Out and Kernel. Drone, the only other starter fell. Maximilian was the favorite and was heavily backed. Andrew Miller, who was hurriedly called upon to act as one of the stewards during tin- running of the steplcchase, to make up the necessary quota of three, had made a big wager on Maximilian and was, of course, compelled to cancel it before lie went, into the stewards' stand. The public was at sea as to the third race. They declined to support Momentum at evens because of the industriously circulated rumors about the well meant presence of The Wrestler and Belle of Iroquois, but" when the Sorcerer gelding's odds went up to 2J to 1, be found sullicient support to send him to the post second choice at 11 to 5. He won In a canter, witli Hello of Iroquois second and The Wrestler last. J. E. Seagram's Deuce led all the way and won a decisive victory in the llfth race. Miss Doyle, left at the post, could not be induced to come back to the scales, and the others were weighed in and the results officially continued without going through that formality in her case. The well planned coup and long delayed killing on Fred Cook's Lawrence 1 Daley materialized in the closing race. Ilis price was allowed to go up to S to 1 from an opening of 4 to 1 and then the auoiiey of the westerners began to show in such large quantities that the layers were constantly rubbing until at post time the odds were 2 to 1. Had not John Sanford's Onatassa been supported by the followers of that stable, tin; Cook colt would have gone to the post at evens if not odds-on. At the finish lie swerved over in front of Onatassa and Jubilee Juggins and was lucky not to have been disqualified. There were many in the throng who thought that lie had offended sufficiently to merit a set-back. Tim report was sent out that Jockey Nicol had I suddenly been taken sick in the paddock in the afternoon. Norfolk's Inaugural Meeting NORFOLK'S INAUGURAL MEETING. The track of the Jamestown Jockey Club is a mile oval, witli grandstand, paddock, clubhouse, and stable accommodation for 42.. horses. The plant is built qpon the grounds of the Norfolk Country ("lull. It is on the road between Norfolk and Jamestown and Is readied by the electric line running between these two cities. The grounds are on a bluff facing the historic Hampton Bnads. The first meeting is to open next Monday under the direction of Sheridan Clark, but persons wise in the management of race meetings do not believe that the venture will be attended by great success. Horsemen are slow about shipping there and It Is quite likely that horses of the best qualities will bp exceedingly scarce. i Fine Fort Erie Layers $100 Each: Cases Will be Appealed-Only One Successful Favorite-Horses for Norfolk FINE FORT ERIE LAYERS $100 EACH. Cases Will Be Appealed Only One Successful Favorite Horses for Norfolk. Buffalo, N. Y., August 20. Only one favorite won at Fort Erie today, winners coming from the ranks of the well backed second choices, witli the exception of Giles in the third, which upset the calculations of the talent, and romped home an easy winner in front of Lady Elkhorn, the third choice in the betting. Aquiline, the even money favorite, after going a good half, gave it up and did not finish in the money. The bookmakers who were served with summons last week to appear before Magistrate Crulkshank for maintaining a betting booth, submitted their eases upon a statement of facts and were fined $100 each. Tiie cases will be appealed. It. J. Levy, It. And and Mrs. D. It. Cook will ship their horses to Norfolk tonight and on Saturday Dick Williams, the owner of the Pasadena Stable, will ship his string with J. Burttschell to that place. Dorasette was purchased litis morning by Nugent Bros, and ran in her new owners' name and interest today. Willis Green was hid up $200 over his entered price of $1,000 by his former owner, Amos Turney, but was retained by the stable. J. Burttschell bought Irene A. from J. II. Madi-gan and will ship her to Norfolk. Nealon's Future Engagements NEALON'S FUTURE ENGAGEMENTS. Many excellent racers have come from Harney Schreiber's Woodlands Stud, hut only to Nealon has fallen the distinction of winning one of the three greatest handicaps of the" American turf, and no bettor horse has come from Woodlands. The Suburban winner of 1007 is well engaged at Sheepshoad Hay, and since his running at Saratoga of late makes him out 'to lie in -fine fbrm he should do well at the Coney Island Jockey Club's track. There ho is nominated to the following events: August 31 Fall Handicap, $2.(X0 added. 3-4 mile. September 2 Twin City Handicap, $10,000 added, 1 1-4 miles. September 0 Turf Handicap, $3,000. added, 1 ,1-10 miles.. September 0 Ocean Handicap, $2,500 added, 1 mile. September 12 ttnssot Handicap, $.1,000 added, 1 1-2 miles. September 10 Omnium. Handicap, $3,000 added, 1 1-S miles. All of these races being handicaps, Nealon's chance for success in any of 4hem will hang on handieappor Vosburgh's view as to how many pounds he should carry, and Mr. Voshurgli docs not usually extend much favor to a horse that has carried off one or more of the greater prizes of the turf. However, he is a sturdy weight carrier, speedy and courageous, and to be depended on to hold his own gallantly against any opposition. Hcsides his Sheepshead Hay engagements, lie is in the First Special at Gravesend and the Municipal Handicap and Helinont Park Weight-for-Age Hace at Belmont Park. Nealon did nothing, conspicuous as a two-year old, but last year developed into one of the crack three-year-olds, and ran many excellent races over the New York tracks in the late summer and autumn. This year his performances have put him in the first rani: of the four-year-olds. His career to date is as follows: Year. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. tlnp. All the matter that lias been printed in New York and elsewhere in the last two days to the effect that Edward Corrigan is in New York "to make peace Kith the Jockey Club" is simply balderdash. .Mr. Corrigan "and David Barnes went to New York for the purpose of discussing witli Matt J. Winn and others the arrangements for the winter racing In New Orleans and to pass upon the few matters that remain to lie settled in that connection. Chapultepec's Futurity Trial CHAPULTEPEC'S FUTURITY TRIAL. New York, August 20. After Chapultepec worked five-eighths of a mile In 1:00 at Sheepshead Bay this morning, Frank O'Neill, the former jockey and partner or Fred Burlew in the ownership of the half-brother to De Mund, said: "The horse that beats Chapultepec in the Futurity will get the money." Horsemen Petition"for Extension to the Latter Date Most Successful Season. The exact date for the closing of the meeting at Seattle has not been fixed, hut it is said now that it will lie either September 14 or September 21. When the meeting was opened, June 20, the management was figuring on sixty-seven days of racing, which would bring the closing date on September 14, hut as the meeting has progressed the horsemen have been nrging an extension. Many of tliem thought 100 days would be about the proper thing, but the management wisely stopped that talk with the announcement that if there is an extension it will lie for one week only, making a total of seventy-three days, and fixing the closing for September 21. The Seattle newspapers say that the meeting has been the most successful over held in the northwest; that stable room at the Meadows has been taxed to the limit from the beginning, and that there are over COO horses on the grounds now, about 200. of which will go to Spokane for the meeting which is to open the third week in September. "The attendance at The Meadows has broken nil previous records, there has been a better class of horses and larger fields, and several coast and track records have been broken," says an exchange. "The purses are larger than have ever been offered in the northwest In the past, and no race has had less than $250 added money, while every day there is at least one race with a money value to the winner of $500. The stake events have been run on Saturdays and never fail to draw large crowds. "On Derby day, July 27, the attendance was approximately 12,000, and when the 1000 Handicap, the richest stake of the season and worth $5,000, was run, August 17, 10,000 people turned out to witness the contest. "J. C. Clem has been the only horse to win more than one stake. He took the Celebration Handicap July 4, and then came right back with a victory in the Taeoma Handicap, July 13. Other stake winners are: St. Francis, Opening Handicap; Glorio, Woodlands Handicap; Johnny Lyons, Seattle Derby; Grace (?., Interurban Stakes; Spring Ban, The Meadows Selling Stakes, and Miss Officious, the 1000 Handicap. "The 1000 Handicap lias been arranged as a special feature for the Alaska-Ynkon-Paciflc Exposition, and it is hoped that by 1000 it will be worth $25,000, and become the most important turf event in western America, and one of 'the most important on the continent. . "Jockey Manders, who came here after the close of the Denver meeting, has jumped into the lead among the riders, and the youngster is now ahead -of 'the ohl-tiiners, such as Gross, Men try, Keogh and others equally well known on the coast. Man-dors has had 130 mounts, and out of these he haa landed 35 winners, 10 place, 13 show and 72 out of the money. Gross comes second with 34 wins out of 140 mounts, and Mcntry, Beggic Davis, Cricket Kelly, McClain, Palms, Keogh, J. Hayes and McBae follow in the order named." Saratoga Stakes on Offer SARATOGA STAKES ON OFFER. To close for entries at midnight of Monday, September hi, the Saratoga Association proffers five valuable stakes, three of which will lie run in 1008 and two in 1000, all being for entries of now yearlings. They are the following: TO BE BUN IN 100S. United States Hotel Stakes, 2-year-olds, value $10,000 ; 3-4 mile. Grand Union Hotel Stakes, 2-year-olds, value $10,000; 3-4 mile. Flash Stakes, 2-year-olds, value $0,000; 5 1-2 furlongs. TO BE BUN IN 1000. Travers Stakes, 3-year-olds, value $7,500; 1 1-4 miles'. Alabama Stakes, 3-year-old fillies, value $5,000; 1 1-S miles. The foregoing are all long-established events faniiliar to and coveted by all owners. In each the first declaration is only $10, so that it costs but a nominal sum to enter and provides an ample period for observation of the development of the youngsters in order to determine which should be stricken from and which retained in the list or eligibles. All should receive the most liberal measure or patronage rrom owners or promising yearlings. Will Not Quit the Jumpers WILL NOT QUIT THE JUMPERS. Concerning the report' that lie would retire from steeplechasing, Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., said at Saratoga Wednesday: "Nothing is further from my thoughts. I have only two horses left to race tills fall, but I expect to race them when I can. I expect to go abroad to hunt this winter, and will lie in England until well into the spring, so my plans for next year are not well defined yet, but I expect to continue to race -steeplechasers." Schreiber to Try for Epsom Derby SCHREIBER TO TRY FOR EPSOM DERBY. Dispatches from Seattle say that before his departure from that city to Los Angeles, Barney Schreiber announced that this year he will take the most extensive step in his turf career and enter several colts for the English Derby of 1910. The stallions Sir Hercules, Sain and Bannockhurn will be represented. The weanlings to be entered are now at his Woodlands Stud in St. Louis county, Missouri. Pretension a Good Thing: Polly Prim Runs a Bad Looking Race at Yonkers PRETENSION A GOOD THING. POLLY PRIM RUNS A BAD LOOKING RACE AT YONKERS. Aunt Rose Outstays Colonel Bob Jockey L. Williams Is in Trouble Swedish . Royalty Sees the Races. New York, August 29. Commodore Lindhorg, Baron Beckfriis, and Lieutenant LIHIehawk, members of the party of Crown Prince Wilhelm of Sweden, escorted by 100 sailors from the Swedish cruiser Fylgia, were guests of the Empire City Club this afternoon and attracted nearly as much interest as did the racing, which the visitors seemed to enjoy immensely, though the sport was in no wise extraordinary. The judges' stand was decorated in the Swedish colors, and tomorrow, the closing day of the meeting, it is expected that the Crown Prince will bo in attendance. The crowd today was much larger than expected, many who had come from Saratoga over night being present. In a betting way the day was one of disaster for the public, not one outstanding favorite winning, unless Pretension, winner of the mile race which served as the feature, can be classed as such. Polly Prim really had the support of the public, but Pretension was backed down from 2 to 1 to 7 to 5 by P. T. Chinn and his connections. The six-year-old son of Orifiamb scored a hollow victory. Polly Prim did not run her race. She can do much better than her poor third. The most thrilling finish of the afternoon was that between Aunt Bose and Colonel Bob in the fifth race. The .filly outstayed the colt. Jockeys Musgrave and Harty each rode two winners. Jockey L. Williams is in trouble, nis riding lias been generally unsatisfactory or late, and after the closing race this artcrnoon the stewards announced that he had been suspended and tliat his case will be referred to the Jockey Club with the recommendation that his license be revoked. Six stake races will bo run during tlie thirteen days of the Montreal Jockey Club's first autumn meeting, which will open at the Blue Bonnets track tomorrow. The first of these stakes is the Canadian Grand National Steeplechase, to bo run over the full course or about two miles and a half on the opening day. The Champ do -Mars, to be rim Monday, is a selling stake for three-year-olds and upward at one mile. The St. Lawrence Stakes, for two-year-olds, at five-eighths of a mile, will be decided Thursday' next. The feature for Saturday, September 7, is the St. James' Handicap for three-year-olds and upward, at one mile and an eighth. The Primrose Selling Stakes, for two-year-olds, at five-eighths of a mile, will be run Wednesday, September 11. The feature of the closing day, Saturday, September 14, will be the Ocean Gateway Stakes, for thrce-ycar-olds and. upward, at three-quarters of a mile. The St. James' Handicap has a guaranteed value of $1,200, the others a guaranteed value, of $1,000. On September 2, 7 and 12 there will be seven races, and on the closing day there will be eight. The reason for this is that some of the fixtures or the Montreal Hunt Club have been embraced. One or these, to be decided September 12, is a Farmers' Steeplechase. It will lie for half-bred horses bred on the island of Montreal, Isle Bizard or In the county of Laval, and imported half-bred marcs which have dropped a foal on the islands or in Laval County, and which have not yet won an open steeplechase during 1907.
