Jockey Chandler Escapes with Slight Injuries Sunshine at Montreal. Montreal, Que., September 0. At the seventh jump, directly in front of the grandstand, in the steeplechase at Blue Bonnets this afternoon, J. W. Colt's livc-year-ohl gelding Kernel, by Sir Dixon Nutshell, fell, broke his neck and died on top of Chandler, his jockey, rendered unconscious by tlie fall. One of the Pinkerton police hurried to the scene and rolled the horse oh" the boy. When Chandler came to it was found that he had a broken ankle and a few bruises. At the second jump Bonfire stopped and refused and at the ninth obstacle Arctic Circle unseated bis rider, who caught tlie horse and. rcipounting, finished the cour.se. The race furnished a driving finish between Lights Out and Merry Maker. The former led all the way and fenced well, lie never made a mistake at any part of the route. Jockey Henry made a frivolous claim of foul against Lights Out and was lined $10 by the judges. For the first time since the meeting began the races were run under bright sunshine. The steady downpour which set in on Monday stopped along about noon today and held off until after the running of tlie sixth race. Then there were more showers, but indications are that settled weather will be in order for a few days at least. The attendance was large and the twenty-four books that cut in found plenty of business. Backers of tlie favorites fared badly, Moonraker, in the third race, being the only winning choice. Considering tlie steady downpour of tlie past four days the traek was in good condition, as is evidenced by the time made. On notification from Francis Nelson, who acted as one of tlie judges at Fort Brio, that steeplechase jockey F. Hiieston had been suspended for a suspicions ride on Merry George at Fort Eric on Saturday last, Ilueston's badge was taken up and he was ordered off the grounds. II. Koasberg today sold to Thomas Lewycr the three-year-old Dr. J. F. Aitken. The price paid was $400. Tlie horse, which lias been thoroughly schooled, will Iks raced through the field next year. After the running of the second face M. J. Daly claimed Dog Rose from ' Thrtwas Hitchcock, Jr., for $1,S70. W. Walker also claimed Koyal Onyx out of the rate, but afterward let T. G. Molinelli bave him back at an advance of $5 over what he paid. Masmada Makes Good Impression M ASM ADA MAKES GOOD IMPRESSION. Of Masrnada, the Italian gentleman rider who is at Blue Bonnets, the Montreal correspondent of a New York paper says: "If Masrnada appears on the Long Island tracks astride of a jumper with even a halfway chance, string with him. He's got ft pair of hands that will get the money." Moving Pictures of the Derby MOVING PICTURES OF THE DERBY. Moving pictures of the race for the Epsom Derby, won by Richard Croker's Orby, June 5, are being shown in the theaters In New York. Tlie film Is 700 feet long, and the scenes before, during and after the race are presented with graphic, completeness. New Record on the Grass: Beacon Light Wins Turf Handicap after a Thrilling Finish NEAV EECOKD ON THE GRASS. DEACON LIGHT WINS TURF HANDICAP AFTER A THRILLING FINISH. cats Miss Crawford By a' Head Nealon Is Unplaced Electioneer Scores His First Victory as a Three-Year-Old. New York, September C. Electioneer, Ibe Futurity winner of 1900, scored bis first victory as a three-year-old when be made bis fifth start of this season In the race at one mile exclusively for horses of bis ape at Slieepshead Kay this afternoon. lie ran the mile in 1 :.2g, and won by a bead from Kentucky Keau. He was carrying a lot of money at odds-on, and bis backers were lucky to cash. At tile half-mile ground Electioneer assumed the lead, killed off Prejuicio, which bad helped to force the pace, and came into the stretcb with a margin of two lengths before the now rapidly closing Kentucky Keau. This horse bad been choked and restrained in the early stages by Miller in his eO'ort to place bim, and just before the finish ho swerved to the outside. This gave the race to the tiring Klectioneer. Anipedo, which finished third, six lengths back of Kentucky Keau, was away flatfootud, closed a big gap and ran a smashing race. The Tnrf Handicap for throe-year-olds and upward at one and three-sixteenths miles on the grass, was the feature of the card. It furnished a thrilling contest and was won by Keacon Light in 1:59, a new record for the course. Nealon was tlie favorite at evens and was backed for a fortune'. He moved up on the inside at the beginning of the last five-eighths, and, when entering llie stretcli appeared a menacing contender, but tired and dropped back to fifth position at the finish. Miss Crawford, Acrobat and Oxford made the running at a tremendously fast pace for the first mile and a sixteenth. Keacon Light, close up and beld In reserve by Miller, came with a sensational closing sprint and earned the victory by a' head 'over the inconsistent Darden representative. Tlie demonstration which followed the lihisli was proof conclusive that a victory by Miss Crawford would have been unpopular. Following is the tabled history of the Turf Handicap: Year. Winner. A. ' In hacking Onatassa for the opening race, tlie handicap for two-year-olds at three-quarters of a mile, tlie talent ' got their checks down wrong. Tlie San ford colt was never dangerous and finished unplaced. Ken Fleet, the second choice, was best mid was beaten only a head by Kialto. .Toyner's colt was lucky in getting away to a Hying start and just did last long enough to stall olt tlie belated challenge of Ken Fleet, which was oil poorly and messed about consideral ly in tlie early stages. For tlie first six furlongs of the second race, which was for three-year-old fillies at one inile, ltoyal Lady, the favorite, and Clare Kussell, tlie heavily backed second choice, raced head and bead, but the concession of eight pounds to her competitor told on Clare Kussell, and ltoyal Lady came home practically alone. Clare Kussell bad no contention for second place and was twelve lengths in front of Killiecrankie at tlie end. Tlie start was a bad one. Kelle of Iroquois was left at tlie post and Eudora was almost left. For tlie second time within a week Cairngorm failed bis backers when be finished third to Kight Koyal, and Missouri Lad in the handicap at one mile and a quarter, which came third on the card. Tlie victory or the rejuvenated cripple, Kight Koyal. was particularly impressive. It was thought that tlie track was too hard for the Lazarus horse, hence the receding price. The owner is said to bavc won $10,000. Andy Klakeley sent Arasee to the post very lit in tlie closing race, and the result with .Miller up was hardly ever in doubt. The stable made a clen-up over tlie Klues gelding's victory. Ideal weather conditions attracted the biggest attendance of the week, except Labor Day. The traek is rapidly drying out, and it is expected to be in good condition for the attractive feature on tomorrow's card. Howard Oots has gone to Lexington, Ky., with lils horses and the three that be was training for A. J. Gorey. including Old Honesty, bave been turned over to L. V. Kellew. Alex Shields is now at his home in Rrooklyn, and there is no improvement in bis condition, lie is suffering from a nervous breakdown, and is unable to retain proper nourishment. Captain It. .T. Lawler's Coup with Blue Book LAWLER'S COUP WITH BLUE BOOK. New York, September 0. It develops that considerable money was taken out of tlie ring over the victory of Blue Book in the Keapers Stakes yesterday. This colt was a maiden until June 2S Inst, when lie won a selling race at Slieepshead Bay at odds of 20 to 1. His victory in the Reapers fwas bis second set of brackets. Blue Book is owned by James F. Carroll, a Brooklyn blacksmith, and is trained by J. S. Lawler, who, as a jockey years ago was known as Steve Charleston. Early yesterday morning Lawler took the three-year-old son of Handsome Blue Blood out for a trial gallop and was satisfied that lie could win the stake. He telephoned from the track to the owner and a number of friends including Dave Lainar and the Boles Brothers, telling them to bring all tbe money they could get together and bet the limit. When the money began to come into the ring, tlie bookmakers accepted it eagerly, laying 25 to 1 in some instances, but 20 to 1 for tlie bulk of it. Lamar, who profited most by the victory of Blue Book, was once known In Wall street as a plunger in stocks and a short while back had a stable of horses. Condensed History of the Flatbush Stakes CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE FLATBUSH STAKES. The twenty-fourth running of the Flatbnsh Stakes will occur at Sheepsliead Bay this afternoon. The event has been run annual- since the first year of the Coney Island Jockey Club's tenancy of its commodious Sheepshcad Bay plant and, being at seven furlongs, calls for ability to stay as well as speed. Beginning with the splendid Mortenier filly Wanda, it has nearly always fallen to a high-class racer, Sir Dixon, Salvator, Potomac, Senator Grady, Lissak, Requital, Ornament, Previous, Lieutenant Gibson, Irish Lad, Highball and Tradition all proving famous race horses subsequent to their two-year-old form. The record of the race is as follows: Year. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Val. Time. 18S4 Wanda Onley..l07 Lizzie Dwyer 107 Florio 107 $ 2,475 1:31 18S3 Charity R.
