PRICE 5 CENTS Keene Scores a Double: Colin Wins Flatbush and Ballot Takes Century Stakes KEENE SC011ES A DOUBLE COLIN WINS FLATBUSH AND BALLOT TAKES CENTURY STAKES. John M. P. Falls in Great Autumn Steeplechase and Mr. McCann Wins Cressina and J. C. Core Run Dead Heat. New York, September 7. .Tames It. Keene 1ms had man" j;Irioii ilnys on I lie turf in this country ami in England, lint it is doubtful if lie was ever more pleased than when lie saw his undefeated two-year-old. Colin, win the his'orie Flatbush Stakes In record time, with Celt, another son of Commando, taking second place in his first appearance on the turf, anil half an hour later witnessed the victory of his sturdy three-year-old, Kallot. in the rich Century Slakes over a trying mile and a half. Tl.M-se performances added an even $21,000 to the winnings of Mr. Keene's horses for the season, making the aggregate .:::!7,1."1. During the morning there had lieen a sale of yearlings from Mr. Keene's Castleton Stud, and tins prices realized were not entirely satisfactory to him, but liis frame of mind was changed after Colin and Ballot scored tins double for him. "I can afford to bavc a poor sale with such a lay on the turf," lie re-marked. Foxhall Keene, who arrived from the west this morning, saw Colin race for the first lime since last spring. Tins racing began with a liigh-weiglit handicap for all ages at threc-iuarters of a mile on the main course, and resulted in a dead heat between Cressina, the favorite, and .T. 0. Core, the third choice. Horner was caught napping, and when he saw J. C. Core coining with a cyclonic rush, under the guidance of- Miller, it, was loo late. There were many among the spectators who thought that J. C. Core was defeated by a scant margin. The judges deliberated a long time before they displayed the dead heat sign. Nicol, who rode Chan-tilly in this race, was lined $25 for cuttiug across the track. The (Treat Autumn Steeplechase, which was run for the lirst time last year and won by John M. P., came as the second number on the card, and four went to the post for the journey of about two miles and a half, .lohn M. l was one of the quartet and to the public it appeared that he would surely be able to duplicate his victory of last year, and lie went to the post the favorite, though, receding in price because of the support that came to Mr. McCann and Sinister. John -51. P. made the running anil led by a wide gap until a half mile from home, when he took off too far from the second to last obstacle, fell upon it, and with such force that Mr. O'Brien, his rider, was shot out of the saddle and over the horse's head as if from a catapult. Bayonet had lost his rider a few seconds before, so it was witli all ease that Mr. McCann came on and won from the trailing Sinister. Then came the Flatbush Stakes at seven-eighths of a mile over the Futurity Course, with Colin and Celt, coujded as the Keene entry, Uar None, Firestone, Meelick, Johnnie Blake and Chapultcpec as the starters, and that is the way they finished. Colin and his stable mate were favored in the. betting, of course, and were backed from- 2 to 5 to 7 to 20. Colin went to the front at the start, led all the way, and in the face of a strong wind equalled the track record of 1:21 J set by the three-year-old Letola, witli 97 pounds up, August .'50, 1904.- Colin carried 120 pounds today, and horsemen declare that his performance is the greatest ever achieved by a two-year-old on the American turf, ail things considered. It marked his ninth victory, witli winnings of $100,791. Celt's debut was so impressive that it was the talk of the paddock for the remainder of the afternoon. Bar None, which finished a beaten off third, wore blinkers for the first time since the Great American Stakes, and did not like them. Moreover, it is said that he has been indulged since the Futurity. Shilling, who rode him today, was not acquainted with his ways, as was plainly shown in his riding. Chapultcpec, which was almost left at the post, ran without blinkers. It is probable that the next time he starts he will have them on. Ballot won the Century Stakes from cud to end. He was not menaced at any stage of the running, and lias proved his staying qualities. Ironsides earned second place from Frank Gill, and McCarter was. a quitting last It is said that McCarter has developed a bad leg, and in consequence has been indulged of late. This is the reason assigned for his quitting so badly today. The tabled history of the Century Stakes is as follows: Year. Winner. A. Wt Jockey. Val. Running Account, which was bid up and bought from II. K. Vingut for $2,500 by William Dubois last Thursday, scored a lucky victory In the last race. Mark Antony II., which was claimed by H. H. Selby Thursday, was returned to It. F. Carman today. Carman is said to have had phenomenal success in betting the last few days, having won twenty-four bets out of twenty-five. Jockey Henry was suspended for the remainder of the meeting by the starter in the fifth race. Thomas II. Williams, president of the California Jockey Club, is a sportsman of the right sort. He wants to race Fircslone against the best when lie is fit and good. He wired his trainer, Dr. Howell. Thursday as follows: "Hope Firestone will be lit. for the Flatbush Saturday. If he is, don't fall to start him and don't dodge any of the eastern cracks at any time when the colt is good." Mr. Williams Is expected here, in the next ten days or two weeks. Good Colt That Has Been Kept in the Maiden Ranks by Colin GOOD COLT THAT HAS BEEN KEPT IN THE MAIDEN RANKS BY COLIN. I BAR NONE, BAY COLT, 2, BY NASTURTIUM EQUALITY. Bar Colin would be a more fitting name for Harry Payne Whitney's two-year-old son of Nasturtium and Equality than liar None, for it is Colin that has kept this good colt in the ranks of the maidens. The Keene champion and -the -Whitney colt made their debuts together in that big field of twenty-three in the over-night race for maidens that was run second on the card at Belmont Park, May 29. At the finish it was Colin first. Bar None second and the others nowhere. The order of finish was the same in the National Stallion Itace at Belmont Park, June 1. Colin did not start in the Great American Stakes, in vihich Bar None made his third effort, at Gravesend, June S, and in which lie finished third to Cohort and Masque, but they came together again in the Brighton Junior at Brighton Beach, July 27, Colin winning, witli Chapultcpec second aiid Bar None third. Bar None's fifth start was in the Hopeful Stakes atSara-toga, August 17, and he finished third to Jim (Taffney and Fair Play. His next was bis second to Colin in the Futurity at Sheepshcad Bay, August ;51, anil his seventh start and fifth meeting with Colin was in the Flatbush Stakes yesterday, Colin and his stable mate, Celt, finishing first and second, with Bar None third. Thus lie has never been unplaced and lias won $5,0((!. Bar None is a great big, rapidly growing colt, one of the sort that is hard to condition in liis first year of racing, but there is no question about his good quality. He has earned his right 1o rank among the best of the year, barring Colin, and he will surely win before the season ends unless he encounters Mime untoward circumstance. Good judges among the horsemen in the cast predict that he will develop into one of the star three-year-olds of 190S. Bar None is a half brother to that good race horse, Algid, son of Top Gallant, and it was the achievements of Algol that caused the late William C. Whitney to buy his dam, Equality, from John B. Ewing and place her in the stud at La Belle Farm. Emancipation, by Lissak; Anaconda, by Hamburg, and Commune, by Meddler, were the three foals dropped by Equality at La Belle prior to her mating with Nasturtium, the horse for which Mr. Whitney paid $50,000 as a two-year-old and sent to England in the hope of winning the Derby, but the son of Watercress proved a disappointment. Equality was bred to Nasturtium in the spring of 1904 and was in foal to him when at the dispersal sale of the Whitney Stud in October of that year, when she was sold to Sydney Paget for $700. Hairy Payne Whitney subsequently took over the mare from Mr. Paget and Bar None was foaled his property In the spring of 1905. Bar None's tabulated pedigree is as follows: J St. Albans , Stockwell. Edwin Gum Wins Easily: Son of Plutus Whips Marster in the St. James Handicap EDWIN GUM WINS EASILY. SON 'OF PLUTUS WHIPS MARSTER IN THE ST.- JAMES HANDICAP.' First Mason Is Defeated and Musgrave Is Suspended Jockey Boyle 13 Ordered Away from Blue Bonnets. Montreal, Que., September 7. The attendance at Blue Bonnets this afternoon was the largest of the meeting. When the horses were called to the post for the opening race there was hardly a vacant seat in the grandstand. The going was still heavy and scratches were numerous. In its original stat the program was good. It was built around the St. James Handicap and had as additional features a steeplechase over the two-mile course and a mile and a furlong race on the flat for gentlemen riders. The stake proved an easy thing for the favorite, Edwin Gum. lie won in a canter. The defeat of First Mason, which was an. odds-on favorite in the third race, led to the suspension of jockey Musgrave. He made the fatal mistake of coming to the inside when entering the homestretch, where the going was deep and heavy, while McCarthy took Henry O. to the middle of the track, where the footing was much better. Musgrave's ride on the opening day on Prince of Orange came in for a lot of criticism and he escaped punishment on that occasion by a narrow margin. Excuses were made for his ride on First Mason on tlia plea that the horse is heavy headed and especially hard to ride over a muddy track. Dog Rose, which was claimed from Thomas Hitchcock, Jr., by M. J. Daly yesterday, has been returned to his former owner. M. Jacobson, the trainer of the horse, bought him back for Mr. Hitchcock at a small advance. J. E. Madden will race a large string at tire Oakland track next winter. Mr. Madden has arranged to ship eighteen yearlings and six older horses to California. They will be in charge of Mose Jacobson. Mr. Madden himself will be in California after the holidays. He contemplates a trip abroad this fall and his plans are to return via San Francisco. Radtke will probably do the riding for the stable. Phil Chinn is another owner who will race in California this winter. He will ship two carloads to the coast. The Beverwyck Stable will ship direct to Baltimore from Toronto. T. Woods' string left for Toronto last night in charge of Charles Phair. Steeplechase jockeys D. Gee and P. Ilagan have also left for Woodbine. P. II. McCarren's string, including Botanist, Sam Bernard, John Rogers, Apple Toddy, Thomas Flyer, Sally Cohen, Star Emblem and Gene Wood, is due to arrive here tomorrow morning' from New York. C. J. Fitzgerald, who lias been acting as one of the stewards at Blue Bonnets, left tonight, for New York. The stewards today received a notice from the National Hunt and Steeplechase Association that jockey Harvey Boyle's license had been revoked. The boy was escorted off the grounds by Pinkerton police. ' Stone to Train Herculoid STONE TO TRAIN HERCULOID. New York. September 7. E. R.-Thomas has decided to place the steeplechaser, Herculoid, lu the hands, of Harry Stone and Harry Graham. Mr. Thomas paid Colonel Robert Neville $10,000. for Herculoid last winter, and he is now at Alex Shields' Bound Brook Farm in New Jersey. Mr. Shields, because of bad health, Is not able to give the horse the attention he requires. Her-culoid's legs are all right, and Mr. Thomas is satisfied that he will come hack to the races in the brilliant form he displayed in the Saratoga and Beverwyck Steeplechases last year. Son of Meddler Goes to England SON OF MEDDLER GOES TO ENGLAND. New York, September 7. The yearling bay colt by Meddler Won-by-Waiting, which Clarence H. Mackey reserved out of the sale of his Kingston Stud youngsters at Sheepshcad Bay Thursday, with a bid of $15,000, was shipped today to England. He "is to be trained at Beckhampton by Sam Darling, who prepared Gal'ee More and Ard Patrick for their Derby victories. The colt by Meddler is eligible to the Derby of 1909 and other rich stakes in England, and Mr. Mackey, who is now shooting grouse on the moors of Scotland, will visit him on his arrival at Darling's training quarters. Important Decision to Horsemen IMPORTANT DECISION TO HORSEMEN. Horsemen will be interested in a recent decision handed down in the California Supreme Court in the case of Henry Delancy and Doulon brothers against the Southern Pacific Railroad. The plaintiffs sued to recover the value of two horses killed in a wreck, alleging their value to be $1,200 and $1,500 respectively. The company defended the claim on the grounds that the plaintiffs had placed a valuation of $20 each against the horses to secure low freight rates, and although the lower court gave judgment for the values asked, the Supreme Court held that the valuation placed upon the horses for the purpose of securing low freight rates was all that could be recovered, and reversed the judgment of the lower court and remanded the case for retrial. The Supreme Court holds that despite one of the horses was proved to be worth, $1,200, and the other $1,500, the Taluatlon which the- owners placed upon them for shipping purposes constituted an implied contract to hold the company responsible only to the extent of $20 each. Shipments of Yearlings SHIPMENTS OF YEARLINGS. New York, September 7. The yearlings bought by Roy A. Rainey and Paul J. Rainey at the sales' this season were shipped today to William Garth'a place at Charlottsvillc, Va. J. J. Walsh is making arrangements to ship hi9 yearlings direct to Oakland, Cal., to be broken and raced early next season. Mr. Walsh, has already purchased thirteen youngsters, and may buy a few more. Harry Rites has gone to Baltimore with a carload of yearlings to be broken and trained at PImlico. Fred Presgrave is breaking a number of yearlings for Thomas Clyde at Salisbury, Md. Walter O. Parmer Is here to attend the sale of the Edenwold yearlings at Sheepshead Bay Monday. He says the brother to Notasulga will not be among his offerings, though the son of The Commoner and Touch Not is catalogued. Keene's Winnings Now $337,131: Stands Second in the World's List of Owners for All Years J. R. KEENE'S WINNINGS NOW $337,131. Stands Second in the World's List of Owners for All Years. The victory of Ballot in the Century Stakes and the first and second of Colin and Celt in the Flat-bush Stakes at Sheepshead Bay yesterday, brings the aggregate of- James R. Keene's winnings in stakes and purses this season to the Immense sum of $337,131. The victory of Colin in the Futurity one week ago yesterday brought the earnings of Mr. Keene to $313,131, and at the time it was stated that he had broken the world's record for earnings in nny one season on the turf. This was incorrect. In England in 1SS9 the Duke of Portland won 73,S57 10s., which, figured at $4.SG to the pound sterling, a fair rate of exchange, was $358,947.42, Thus Mr. Keene stands second in the list of world's winning owners for this and previous years. M. Blanc holds the record for France and is third in the world's list, with $320,000. The record of the performances and winnings of Mr. Keene's horses to date this season follows: Horse. Though there is a long stretch of the English flat racing season to come, there is no doubt about the best two-year-old of the year before the public. Ilis name is White Eagle, a chestnut colt by Gallinule, out of Merry Gal, and owned by W. Hall Walker. Along with several minor evnts White Eagle has captured four of the biggest two-year-old races of the English turf, and when the curtain rings down on the season his total winnings will in all probability exceed $100,000. Since his first appearance this son of Gallinule lias had the easiest sort of a task in coming home in front, no matter what the distance or the weight. But admirers of the colt, good as he is, were set thinking over the result of the National Breeders' Produce Stakes at Sandown. This stake was wortli $25,000, and opposed to White Eagle, among other cracks, was Rhodora, a filly owned by Croker, and a half-sister to the Derby winner, Orby. Her previous form showed her to he little better than the average plater, and by no means to be ranked in the same company as White Eagle. She won the Tenth Cadogan Plate at Leopardstown in Ireland, and subsequently chased home Temer-aire to a length in one of the leading events at Waterford in an attempt to give away eleven pounds. Inclusive of the sex allowance Rhodora was in receipt of twelve pounds from White Eagle, and there was some notice taken of her in Hie betting, for the starting price was 7 to 1 against, while White Eagle was 5 to 2 on. When half the distancefive furlongs had been traversed. White Eagle went to the front, followed by Rhodora, and after an exciting finish the colt won by a head. Of course nobody knows how much was left White Eagle, but Lynham, his rider, did not touch him either with whip or steel, hut all the time lie kept a sharp eye on Rhodora as she crept up. While White Eagle was earning fame at Sandown another two-year-old belonging to the same owner was performing creditably at the Liverpool summer meeting. This was the bay colt Indian Runner, by Ladas, out of Pintail, and he was successful in the Mersey Stakes, a five and a half furlongs event worth about 4,000. It was the colt's third appearance in public and he beat such good ones as Rambling Rector, Hat Trick, Royal Desmond, Poor Boy and Miss Spendthrift. It is thought that White Eagle, Rhodora and Sir Archibald, another crack youngster, may meet in the Gimcrack Stakes at York, the race which usually winds up the two-year-old season. But Hall Walker it appears, is just now thinking that White Eagle with a few more engagements before him, will have enough for the season, so it is possible he may not face the gate for the Gimcrack. King Edward has a promising string of two-year-olds, but one of the best seems to be Simpatica, winner of the Soltykoff Stakes at the Newmarket second July meeting. She is a Lrown filly by St. Simon, out of Laodamina and carried her 115 pounds to victory in the most decisive style. According to the reports the (Illy had done well on the trial grounds, but in the betting was set aside for the superior claims of Beauty Sleep, Lady Mine, Barngate and Kirklington. Beauty Sleep, a winner at the second spring spring meeting, was the favorite and led for a while, Simpatica being among the first three from the start. Going to the front about half the journey the royal filly strode out In a line free style to the finish, wiauing by three lengths, from Barngate, Beauty Sleep being a close third. ? t The name of, AugusO Belnrant! figures among the owners of topnotcli two-year-olds with Norman III. and Crossbar. The former seems the better of the pair, as his victory in the Exeter Stakes would Indicate. Here 'the Belmont colt beat Hall Walker's Indian Runner by three lengths on even weight terms. Norman III. is by Octagon, out of Nineveh. Another slashing two-year-old Is Vamose, by Orme, out of Vampire, and owned by the Duke of Westminster. Though hut a novice lie gave a rousing display of speed in the Prince of Wales Stakes at Goodwood. When called upon he came away from the field like a streak and won with a lot to spare. On the same day in the Rous Memorial Stakes Sol Joel's Persuasion was the favorite and he won quite easily. Of the two-year-old fillies the most promising seems to be an unnamed bay by St. Simon, out of Pace Egger, and she Is the property of Lord Derby. She won the great Lancashire Produce Stakes of $10,000 at the Liverpool seeond summer meeting from a stout field and with a long price against her. Montreal Entries MONTREAL ENTRIES. "It will come as a surprise to the public and to many Avho knew Otto Wonderly, the jockey, to learn that his father is now a watchman at the Sheepsliead Bay track, and the frages earned there are his sole support," says the New York Telegraph. "When Wonderly was killed at Memphis a year ago last spring it was supposed he had left a fortune, estimated by some to be in the neighborhood of $100,000. He was exercising a marc, in which he was interested, Avhen she crossed her legs and Wonderly went over her head. He died the following day from - concussion of the brain. There Avas a key to a lockbox in a safety deposit company of Memphis, but this hex, on being opeued, was found to be empty. "Those who were intimate with Wonderly are convinced there must be funds belonging to ids estate somewhere. Though he lived well, he had always been a good manager. The year he rode for William C. Ilennessy, whose weakness Is backing rank outsiders, secured at the Chantilly race course the largest amount won on an outsider since the Paris intituel system was instituted on the French turf. lie asked lies-nard, a well-known bookmaker, to take a bet at Paris mutnel odds on Scableuse, Cotnte Gerard de Ganay's filly, by Isinglass, which ran badly at DeauvIIle. The amount staked was ?200 for a win and a similar amount for place. Practically nobody backed Scableuse, not even her owner, so when she romped home the Paris mutuel returned odds of nearly ISO to 1, yielding Ilennessy ?30,1C0. The largest paying mutuel of record in this country was $1,17S for a 5 ticket on Nickajack at Jerome Park, October 12, 1S72.- The odds in this instance were .$234.00 to 1.
