FRANK HITCHCOCK'S HORSE LANDS OCEAN HANDICAP WITH EASE. Sapphire Stakes Falls to the Long-Overdue Mcclick and Nimbus Runs Sadly Behind Half the Favorites Triumph. New York. September J). The Ocean Ilnmlicnii :iinl Sapphire Stakes, two of the minor Coney Island Club's classics, were the racing ornaments at Shecpshead Hay track this afternoon. For their display a fast but peculiar track it was cuppy in spots was provided, and a 12.000 crowd was out. Dandelion', away in no hurry and well placed, used and speeded by Master Dugan, won the Ocean Handicap almost at his leisure, after a fast sprint on the turn for the lead. He was always the favorite and most smartly backed. Brookdale Nymph was a Rood mare today and ran an excellent race, after much impeding and bad luck. Kennyetto and Court Dress aided Dandelion by a fast six and a half furlongs in front. They sprinted each other out of breath and contention. Kennyetto's failure was most marked. She was short and bothered by the peculiar going. The Sapphire Stakes drew out only a lield of four colts, but furnished a rattling finish. In which John Madden's long-overdue Meelick outgamed Fred Cook's Lawrence 1. Daley after a great bit of contention before the stand. Incidentally, young Dugan held more than his own with the veteran Nicol. Live Wire and Nimbus the odds-on favorite were far back. Meelick was backed by his party and ran more than a good race. Nimbus bad a world of early speed, but when Meelick and Daly got to him, he stopped and was palpably short. The day's opener resulted In an easy win for Bar-ney Schreiber's castoff. Sheriff Williams, running in the colors of J. K. Widener. Sheriff Williams wis bard held for over half the journey and jumping faultlessly, came on and won witli much ease, nine 1'igeon was a contender in the last quarter, but. tired badly in the final drive. Rudolph Spreckels. the California millionaire, took the second purse with San Alviso in a drive from lted Friar and Littleton .Maid, with the favorite, Moonshine, a disgraceful last. The winner showed much speed and led all the way,, but bad to le shaken up slightly at the end to outlast his nearest competitors. Moonshine was well up for thrce-cpiartcrs and then died away. Braneas. Ostrich and Quagga finished heads apart in the liftli event, the first named lasting just long enough after having an apparently safe lead in the stretch. Ostrich, which finished second, came like a shot in the closing struggle and would have overtaken the winner with a bit farther to go. Quagga, which took the small end of Ofe purse, quit when challenged by the other two after showing keen speed. Jockey Nicol piloted Alfred Noble to victory in tlie closing affair of the day, beating an unwieldy field or twenty others in a canter. After getting off In his stride he showed high-class speed throughout and was drawing away with ease in the closing strides and may be a colt of good class. Roslmiro easily held second place safe all the way. Quite a sum of money was taken out of the ring on the victory of the winner, lie having been backed from 21 to J to a to r. at post time. The horse Kercheval was withdrawn at the last moment in the second race, where he appeared to be a certainty, because his people did not come up "with some forfeit money quick enough. Jockey Miller, when asked if be intended riding at Oakland this winter, replied that lie would go where they gave him the most money. Montreal Form Chart MONTREAL FORM CHART. (BLUE BONNETS.) Ormonde's Right Scores at Last: The Old Sulker Runs Straight and True and Wins at Blue Bonnets ORMONDE'S RIGHT SCORES AT LAST. The Old Sulker Runs Straight and True and Wins at Blue Bonnets. Montreal, Que., September !. There was a decided improvement in the racing at Dine Doimets this afternoon. The fields averaged larger and the sport was more interesting, several of the races producing interesting contests. Favorite players had little to complain of as they got an even break with the layers, three of the choices leading as the winning lint- was passed. There was a big improvement too, iu the going and despite the fact that the track was a bit cuppy, fast time was made during the afternoon. Kastern owners won three of the races. William Walker being the only one of the western division to land a purse,- tin other two being captured by Canadian turfmen. There were thirty layers on in the enclosure and speculation was brisk enough to keep them all busy. There were no stake races on the program, a steeplechase over the two-mile course and a handicap at one mile on the Hat being provided as chief attractions. The steeplechase produced a stirring contest, with the winner in doubt until after the last jump had been taken. The handicap found the first two horses under a furious drive, with Ormonde's Right the winner in the very last stride. Jockey C. Koerner had the mount on Ormonde's Right and rode one of his old-time finishes. Green Morris won his first race at the meeting when Mystilier galloped home an easy winner in the third race. Koerner also had the mount on this horse and rode an energetic race. Among the guests of the .Montreal Jockey Club today were: Dr. O. J. Smith, of the Ontario Jockey Club: J. W. Colt, the well known eastern turfman who races a big string of jumpers on the metropolitan courses and Brigadier-General L. Iliggs, of Daltimore. These three gentlemen viewed the races from the stewards' stand. While at the post in the fourth race. Pantonlle was kicked on the off forearm by Ormonde's Right. Some New Tracks for California: George Rose Here for a Conference with President Tom Williams SOME NEW TRACKS FOR CALIFORNIA. George Rose Here for a Conference with President Tom Williams. George Itose, big bookmaker, stockholder in Ascot Park and Interested in the establishment of a new track in the vicinity of Los Angeles to take the place of Ascot I 'ark next winter, is in the city. Various and varying reports as to the locality and "ownership -of the projected new track have been life of late. Yesterday he said: "I hare 'nothing of value to say about the matter today. I expect to meet Mr. T. H. Williams, president of the California Jockey Club, and some other .gentlemen tomorrow and after conferring with them will probably be able to furnish some definite information." As an example of the kind of stuff that is current concerning the enterprise a New York dispatch of last night to Daily Kacing Form said: 'Tiu World publishes an exclusive story this morning to the effect that George Itose, Barney Schreiber, Tom Williams ami Curley Drown, the promoter, and representing "Dig" T. D. Sullivan, will meet in conference at Chicago tonight regarding the establishment of a new race course at Venice near Los Angeles." Of course there is no more to this story than that Hose is now in Chicago and Mr. Williams is on his way east, and is to lie here today. Darney Schreibcr and Drown are in California and likely to remain there. The Drown scheme, in which he is seeking to interest Tim Sullivan, Is far from a certainty at this time. Morris Park for Westerners: Discovery of a Move of Cella & Company to Get New Track MORRIS PARK FOR WESTERNERS. Discovery of a Move of Cella & Company to Get New Track. New York, Septemlicr 0. There was an attempt made recently to lease Morris Park bv W. O. Parmer, representing, presumably, the western race track magnates-, L. A. Cella and others, through the Philadelphia Development Company. This information was given out by two gentlemen at the track this aftcrnoon.who are stewards of the Jockey Club and guarantors of the present five-vear lease held from the Morris Drothers by the Jockev Club for the Westchester Kacing Association. The attempt was doomed to failure from the first, owing to the existence of an iron-clad clause in the Jockey Club lease which provides for the dismantling of the grand stand and buildings and the cutting up of the land into building lots at the expiration of their llve-year lease. Toronto, Out., September !). On Saturday next the autumn meeting of the Ontario Jockey Club will commence at Woodbine Park and it is doubtful if in all the history of this most successful club any previous meeting held out so much promise of a week of excellent sport. The stakes which carry a very liberal amount of added money resulted in an entry of over three hundred, and the substantial sums which are added to the overnight events possess attractions sullicient both on the Hat and crosscountry, to suit the most exacting of the Ontario Jockey Club's patrons. A visit to Woodbine Park showed everything at Toronto's famous race course in apple pie order. The paddock and splendid lawns cannot, be beaten with their mass of (lowers; the steeplechase course, the jumps of which' are newly brushed, is in beautiful order. Witli the gigantic bowling lawn and polo lield, the newly sown grass on the latter especially Itenefited by the recent rains, presenting an ideal picture which never fails to attract visitors in such numbers to Toronto. The stables which now number some five hundred boxes, are rapidly tilling up the huge block at the west end of the track, are all occupied, the long rows of barns at the east end only remaining for all the horses which will arrive this week from New York and Montreal. Where will they all find quarters is a problem for. be the meeting long or short, Toronto is always the mecca for owners who are not absolute fixtures at the big courses of the east at no other place is there auylhing like the same interest taken locally in the sport as at Toronto. The track is aglow with owners, trainers and their charges iu the morning hours given over to training, while the fences arc lined with an interested and horse loving public. The horses of the president. Joseph K. Seagram and his co-director, John S. Ilendrie, with the several local stables have been especially prepared for Toronto, for they all dearly love to win at Woodbine. The list of officials are all wll known at Toronto. With the possible exception of Mr. Joseph A. Murphy, who is officiating for the first time, Mr. Murphy taking Mr. Trevelyah's place, the latter being compelled to forego his autumn visit to Toronto through Ill-health. Western Jockey Club Still Lives WESTERN JOCKEY CLUB STILL LIVES. The reported intention of the Western Jockey Club to disband its organization and join the American Turf Congress among the things that have been, did not materialize yesterday. Nothing was said or done about the matter at the regular monthly meeting of the stewards, only a few routine matters being considered. Secretary Woodruff's report of the proceedings is as follows: Chicago, September 0, 1007. The regular monthly meeting of the Doard of Stewards of the Western Jockey Club was held on Monday, September !, 1907. There were present Messrs. Dusb, Cella, Fitzgerald. Montgomery and Nathanson. Application of John K. Treubel for jockey license was denied. Application of Walter Drannon for apprentice license was granted. Hugh Monroe, trainer, was restored to good standing. After a bearing, Phil King, owner, was restored to good standing. The mcetiDg adjourned. Harvey T. Woodruff, Secretary. Jockey W. Miller is Re-Engaged JOCKEY W. MILLER IS RE-ENGAGED. New York, September 0. That the Newcastle Stalde does not expect to go out of business notwithstanding next Thursday's sale, is assured by the fact that the contract with jockey Miller has been renewed for another year. Miller's relations with his present employers have been so pleasing that there was never a thought of transferring his services to another owner. Harry Payne Whitney may take second call. Although many maintain that Miller is not a good rider it is a fact that owners and trainers will put him up whenever possible in preference to other riders'. Miller has ridden in 7S2 races this season. He has been upon the backs of 224 winners, been second 115 times, third 101 times, and unplaced '12 times. This record is below that of last season. In 1900 up to September S Miller rode 250 winners out of 002 mounts. Blue Grass Breeders to Refine BLUE GRASS BREEDERS TO REFINE. Lexington, Ky., September 9. O. II. Chenault, owner of the Spendthrift Stud, reports that the sale of thoroughbred yearlings being conducted in New York is the worst all-around sale he ever saw. Mr. Chenault is of the opinion that the breeders here will have to limit their oieratlons. The- breeders will he forced to sell all but their most productive broodmares and breed to the highest class stallions in order to make their business a success is ilia opinion'. Deing a member of the Protective Dreeders' Association, Mr. Chenault says that he will urge that the association become active again and enter the field for purchasing broodmares. The lack of racing in the west he ascribes as the cause of the poor sale of yearlings. Joe Yeager is Playing in Luck JOE YEAGER IS PLAYING IN LUCK. New York. September 9. Joe Yeager is continuing his winning streak, and unless some one checks him soon, will have as much money as when lie first came east to depart wofully defeated. Last Saturday he whip-sawed two races. In the jumps he took Mr. McCann straight and Sinister a place, while in the Century he went to Ballot to win and Ironsides to run second. The facts are these: Hess admitted betting .$.'120 on John M. P., which he lost: he then recouped by betting $G00 on Colin. He collected a portion of the winnings on Colin and settled all but $S5 of the John M. 1. losing markers. These transactions were made in George Rose's name.
