Insufferably hot, lmmiil weather prevailed at the Itrooklyn track today. It drove the people to the seashore and helped to augment the attendance. The solitary stake fixture, the ltayshore, under selling conditions at the short six furlongs, went to the second choice .lacohite, running for the lirst time in C. It. Ellison's colors. Tom MeGrath, the heaviest backed favorite of the day, was virtually eliminated as a contender at the start. Frank Lord swerved across him' and knocked him out of it. It seemed certain that lie would win, judging from the way the Held was acting at the post. The defeat of Harry I'ayne Whitney's pair of .$10,000 three-year-old geldings, Westbury and Perseverance, in the closing affair at nine furlongs for maidens, nfFhTsbcTrtlie sensation "of life day. Waller Miller rode the winner. Pins and Needles, and so far out-maneuvered the two jockeys, Notter and Swain on the favorites, that he was able to beat them with a fifth-rate animal. It was the general opinion that Westbury hadn't been conditioned or prepared for a longer journey than six furlongs. His defeat was attributed to that as much as to Ills rider's stupidity. Swain was a joke on Perseverance. There were some big wagers placed on the Whitney entry at the almost prohibitive odds of 1 to 4. The lirst race was easy for Momentum, the favorite, witli Miller up. The running of the second developed a big upset. Nicol encompassed the defeat of the favorite and best horse. Fort Johnson. Everybody agreed as to that. Antaeus, backed from 4 down to 5 to 2 ran like a cart horse. The colt's trainer, A. J. .loyner was absolutely speechless with astonishment as the race progressed. First Premium showed what he was capable of doing with a change of riders from the impossible Hooker to Radtke in the third race. He was the public's choice and almost backed off the boards. Old Honesty ran a dazzling race". Barney Schreilier captured the long distance selling race with Killiecraukie. The stable liked her chances it is said and Schreiber is said to have prolited enormously by her victory. Mr. Schreiber was not present, however, to see his lilly win. lie Is In California. Only two favorites rewarded their backers. Momentum and First Premium. It was a disastrous day for the players. Captain Jim Williams will race at Oakland lie said today and will ship after the Jamaica meeting. The good horse Cartilage will lie sent for the Hums Handicap. S. C. Ilildreth shipped three full carloads today to Oakland, California. Four horses in the consignment belong to C. K. Darnell. J. O. Koene shipped one carload of horses (fourteen in number), to San Francisco this morning. II. M. Mason leaves for California this week to take up ills ten colts, and fifteen Tillies, the get of Orsini, Ossary, Cunard and St. Carlo. He will develop and race them at Oakland tiiis winter for their owner W. O'H. Maedonough. The lot contains brothers and half-brothers, sisters and half-sisters to many noted turf stars. Judge Price on the New Rule: He Interprets the Kentucky Racing Commission Law in the Right Way JUDGE PRICE ON THE NEW VRULE. He Interprets the Kentucky Racing Commission Law in the Right Way. Lexington, Ky., September 17. Judge Price was called upon to define the recent rule passed by the State Racing Conimisison relative to hookmnkiug owners. E. T. Craves, whose Sain Clay was carded to start in the opening race, is making book here, and when this was brought to the notice of Judge Price he ruled that Craves must either suspend Ills ltooklng operations or refrain from running bis horses. Craves elected to make hook and Sam Clay was scratched. "The broad purpose; of the rule as I construe it," said Judge Price, "is to prohibit any person from booking and racing at the same track. It lias been suggested to me that the rule could be complied with if a bookmaker were merely compelled to turn his slate upon any one or more races in which lie had a starter, hut I believe that tills would in a large measure, if not wholly, invalidate the purpose of the rule, and until the Kentucky Kacing Commission instructs me to the contrary I shall hold that no bookmaker can race horses and make books at. the same meeting." Another big crowd witnessed the racing this afternoon. The sport was mediocre, cheaper class horses making up the card. Melzar and Dr. Spruill were the only winning favorites. The former was extensively supported by his owner, Itob Tucker, who reached' here from Louisville especially to back his candidate. The longest priced winner of the afternoon came with the running of the fifth race, a maiden affair at live fill longs, won by Callileo. This youngster made his debut under colors today and is owned bv T. C. McDowell. As a suckling lie was exhibited at the state fair and carried off the blue ribbon. The following year he won the same honor in the yearling class at the Blue Crass Fair. In his race today In; gave promise of becoming a useful racer. Belle Scott upset wise calculations by taking the measure of Mattie Mack in the third. There was considerable delav at the start, on account of the crazy antics of Ada Riee. When they were finally dispatched Ada Rico was practically left at the post and My Queen of the Roses, a first tinier to the barrier, wa's left standing still. Laiiiptrimmer. a frequent disappointment, managed to secure a big advantage, at. the start in the first race, which enabled him. to wip from Nellette. After Lightning Conductor's, easy victory in the fourth race over French Nun,, liq was bid up .$200 over his entered price of $500 and bought by Hughes ' Bros. 1 "... Jockey Cherry was tills afternoon suspended for the remainder of the meeting for his failure to keep Ills riding engagements. Jockey E. Martin was supended by the starter for two days for disobedience at the post. Jockey Farrow was lined .$25. Elastic, which started in the opening race, has probably gone to the post for the last time, as he broke down badly. C. C. Van Meter is reported seriously ill at Louisville. He is suffering from typhoid fever. He recently purchased The 'Clansman from Thomas Moore. Jockey Lloyd, who was injured by a fall on Can-opian at Fort Erie, was at the- track this afternoon, lie is still on crutches, but expects to lie riding again in three weeks. Thirteen bookmakers again drew in today and will continue business tomorrow. Did Not Foul Dandelion DID NOT FOUL DANDELION. When Brookdale Nymph defeated Dandelion in the Omnium Handicap at Slieepshead 15ay last Friday, some people thought she had Interfered with Dandelion sufficiently to justify disqualification and made unseemly noises about the matter. But after the race John E. Madden, who trains Dandelion and knows several things about racing, said: "Brookdale Nymph did not interfere enough with Dandelion to warrant disqualification. If I had been ne:ir the finish line I would not have permitted Nicol to go before the stewards, although the boy probably thought he was doing right in making a protest. I do not want to win races that way and I believe that It is not advisable to educate the racing public to look for disqualifications on the slightest pretext. The ruling of the stewards was perfectly just and I have absolutely no fault to find." All this illustrates the very bad and incorrect criticism continually made over the work of the small riders around the metropolitan tracks by writers for the Now York naners. If one credits these writers, such boys as Miller, Dugan. Nicol and others whose services are In constant demand and who continually, do the best they can with what they have and ride conscientiously at all times and as well as any riders of their weight in the world, are mischievous, unruly, disobedient and even corrupt. Of course all tills is the veriest sensational bosh. No Roseben-Colin Race Probable NO ROSEBEN-COLIN RACE PROBABLE. Talk about a match between Roseben and Colin lias been given a tiresome amount of misused space in the morning newspapers. It is weak nonsense. Colin is a two-ye&r-oid with many valuable engagements to meet, does not Iielong to a gambling owner and will almost certainly be retired after running r,iit his engagements for horses of Ills own age at Belmont Park. Montgomery for California MONTGOMERY FOR CALIFORNIA. It Is said that Montgomery will be well engaged In the Oakland Stakes and campaigned there through the coming meeting of 1007-'08. Montgomery Is but few pounds behind the best three-year-olds of the year, and should prove a great attraction. So far as present indications go more good eastern horses will be sent to Oakland than lias ever been the case previously. Excellent Racing at Toronto: Ypsilanti Appears in the Sandringham Plate and is Beaten EXCELLENT RACING AT TORONTO. Ypsilanti Appears in the Sandringham Plate and Is Beaten. Toronto. Ont., September 17. Stirring contests were in order at Woodbine this afternoon. An excellent program was provided, the features of which were the Sandringham Plate, the Epsom Handicap and the Kingwood Handicap, the latter a mile and a half race for hunters. Five of the seven events resulted in driving finishes, with the winners lirst home by small margins. Considerable interest was attached to the running of the Sandringham Plate, from the fact that Ypsilanti was a starter. Ypsilanti is the American-bred horse that showed such high-class form in England, where lie was rated as the best handicap horse in training. He has to his credit the winning of the Great Diamond Jubilee Stakes two years in succession, and in all the big handicaps this" year lie was assigned top weight. Ypsilanti was bred at the Wnlden farm at Mid-diebiifg. Maryland, and arrived in this country only three weeks ago. It was generally known that he was not up to a bruising contest and for this reason received but little consideration in the speculation. It was the horse himself that the people wanted to set; and, although he failed to show any sensational speed in his race, still lie impressed horsemen hero. His owner intends to retire him to the stud. The Epsom Handicap, the richest event on the program, was won by the American-owned horse Charlie Eastman, which carried top weight. lie was ridden by V. Powers. He came from behind and after a great stretch drive, got up in the last sixteenth and won going away. There were three added starters in this race. Rollicking Girl, Mini-ta and George S. Davis. The closing event went to the long shot. Black Hawk, which won after a hard drive. Murphy, who had the mount on Sudermau. which finished second, claimed foul against the winner, but it was not allowed. Among today's arrivals at the track were Henry Mason. J. L. Dayman and .1. Cooper, the latter with the division of the stable which Barney Schreiber is racing on the Canadian circuit. Chacornac's Sire, Juvenal, Dead CHACORNAC'S SIRE, JUVENAL, DEAD. Chacornac's sire, Juvenal, was put to deatli not long since at Elmendorf Farm, near Lexington, Ky., on account of general debility. He was only eighteen years old. but lie has been out of service for some time and of no use as a stock horse. Juvenal was a son of Springfield and Satire, by Blair Athol, and was a high-class stake winner in England. His best get outside of Chacornac were The Minute Man, Musette. JuvenalisT Florizel, Turquoise Blue, Juvenal Maxim, Satirist, Wool fiath-erer and San Cecelia, and his daughters are highly prized as broodmares. Another stallion which recently died at Elmendorf was the black horse. Calvados, also eighteen years old. and a son of the Derby winner, Galopin and Turn of the Title by Mandrake. Calvados never raced, but with limited stud opportunities lie sired a number of good winners, including Caldron, Valdos. Coming "Event, Tom Sharkey, Queen Nubia, Seven Up and Mcxicana. Recently during a storm In out' of the Elmendorf paddocks the bay filly. Fatigue, by Star Kuby, dam Winenia, by Uneas, became frightened and in attempting to jump a fence fell and broke her neck. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Lally is the principal money earner among the English horses and up to August 20 had won .$57,-775, a sum exceeded by several American horses. John Mackey is .quoted by the California papers as saying that the weanling colt by Royal Flush III. Briar Sweet will prove the equal of any thoroughbred ever owned by J. B. Ilnggin. On the two meetings held at the Bay this year the Coney Island Jockey Club lias, it Is said, earned more than .$.500,000 net. The racing lias been wonderfully patronized at tills popular track. Pete Clay, who piloted Imp to many notable victories, and who was reported dead by New York correspondents, is employed at one of the stables at Lexington and occasionally schools jumpers. To get an idea of the American method of breeding, keeping and developing thoroughbreds, Le Prince Henri du Croy of Brussels, Belgium, is at Lexington on a flying trip. The prince operates a large stable of racehorses in ills native country, doing most of his racing at Brussels and Antwerp. Some of these days Gravesend will be cut up into building lots and the Brooklyn Jockey Club will build a magnificent racecourse in Nassau county several miles beyond Belmont Park. At least that is the program mapped out, although P. J. Dwyer is not ready to admit that the passing of Gravesend is near at hand. The tale comes from Lexington that on account of the scarcity of riders there jockey T. Taylor, hung up for an alleged crooked ride on Barnsdale, Is to be given a hearing and probably reinstatement. Of course Ed will not be biased by anything like jockey scarcity, but the Idea of turf morality held by the writer of the tale Is novel to say the least. Cormack, the successful American jock'cy who has ridden this season in France for M. B. Veil-LMcard, will probably give up his profession at the close of the iiresent season .and return to America. He went over a few seasons ago as lightweight to the Rothschild stable. lie rode sixty-one winners last year and steered Clyde to victory for M. E. Veil-Picard in the French Oaks of 1905. Master John Henderson, loaded with tanglefoot and a big gun, tackled John E. Madden a few days ago with a demand for immediate settlement of an alleged debt. Madden diplomatically gave in and tendered a .$100 bill, requesting change. This the boy could not produce and while the two were out ostensibly seachlng for it Madden contrived to run the !oy into the custody of a policeman. The revolver was found, to be fully loaded. Arcadia Track a Surety: Schreiber Rose and Baldwin Employ A. M. Allen to Build It ARCADIA TRACK A SURETY. SCHREIBER, ROSE AND BALDWIN EMPLOY A. M. ALLEN TO BUILD IT. t Expect To Race Over New Course December 1 Complete List of Oakland Stakes Futurity and Derby Conditions. Los Angeles, Cal., September 17. The Arcadia track is to lie built. Barney Schreiber and George Rose will hold a controlling interest in it and the plant will lie finished in time for racing, possibly by December 1, next, but certainly before Christmas. This much was settled yesterday when Messrs. Rose and Schreiber made the first payment to E. J. Baldwin for the land on which the great racing plant is to be situated. The price naid for the land 100 acres was more than. $1,000 an acre, but not much more. E. J. Baldwin takes some stock as part payment, but less than one-third. Baldwin needs money more than he needs land or race tracks. A. M. Allen, builder of the later Chicago tracks and every great racing plant in the west, is to begin operations at once, taking full charge, of the construction work. He promises to have a practical racing plant ready for operation by December 1, the present date selected for the opening of the new race track. The track will be named Santa Anita, and the club will be known as the New Los Angeles Jockey Club. According to contractor Allen, the work that has been done thus far at Baldwin Park is not of much effect, as it has not been done along lines that lie considers proper in building a race track in a limited lime. Schreiber lias come to Los Angeles to stay until Christmas, at least, lie says, and lias moved from the Van Nuys Hotel to apartments on South Olive street. Schreiber still holds to the opinion that the track can lie completed within the time loft for holding n winter meeting to begin December 1. Dey Del Caredes' Good Daughter DEY DEL CAREDES' GOOD DAUGHTER. Except for a very few representatives in out-of-the-way places, the male line from Lexington liTick'to Dioincd is practically extinct in this country. But a great-grandson of Lexington is making a great stir in Ireland because of the speed he confers on his progeny. This horse is Americus, by Emperor of Norfolk Clara D., by Glcnelg. He was bred by E. J. Baldwin and raced successfully in this country as Rey del Caredes, then was taken to England by Richard Croker, when his name was changed to Americus. When Americus was done with racing there Mr. Croker leased him to an Italian breeder. In Italy his success in the stud was so pronounced that Mr. Croker recalled him for service in Lis own Glencairn stud. A daughter of Ids, the two-year-old lilly, Americus Girl, belonging to E. P. Gall. Is held to be the best of her age and sex in Ireland. In her lirst three starts she won the Drogheda Memorial at the Curragh, Baidoyle Foal Stakes at Baldoyie, and the Leo-pardstown Grand Prize at Leopardstown. These arc three of the richest prizes of the Irish turf for two-ycar-pldsl Old Lexington will bo grandly avenged on the American breeders if tills expatriated descendent of his should eventually sire an Epsom Derby winner. The stand will accommodate 2,000 persons, and is well situated to give a good view of the course. The steeplechase course lias been laid out for some time. It is irregular in shape and about one mile and a half around. The jumps have not' yet been put in place, but superintendent Gorman, who lias charge of the construction, will make short-work of this feature. An innovation in race track construction will he disclosed by the track for fiat races being on the inside of the steeplechase course. At other courses it is just the reverse. The track for flat races is one mile in circumference, laid out on turf, and naturally docs not follow the outline of. the steeplechase course. Running Water's Notable Record: The Best Four-Year-Old Filly of the Year Sold for a Big Price RUNNING WATER'S NOTABLE RECORD. The Best Four-Year-Old Filly of the Year-Sold for a Big Price To close out a partnership the excellent filly. Running Water, was sold at auction Thursday and bought by trainer Tom Welsh, presumably acting in behalf of Messrs. Andrew Miller and II. Painter, for $15,200. She is the best four-year-old lilly in training in this country, and a racer of rare merit, fast, a line 'weight carrier, a grand stayer and as game as the ganiest. She made her debut as a two-year-old in 1905, the property of Woodford Clay, and after earning a great reputation was wild along with her stable mate. Content, to the Newcastle Stable, Tor the reported price of $25,000 for the two. Besides purses she won the Croat Filly Stakes, Rosebud Stakes and DistafT Stakes when a two-year-old. When a three-year-old last year she gave many convincing displays of her high class, and among other races won the Alabama Stakes at Saratoga, Ramapo Handicap at Sheepshcad Bay, Albemarle Handicap and the Second Special at Gravcscnd, Belmont Park Autumn Weight for Age Race at Belmont Park, and Edgeniere Slakes at Aqueduct, in the Ramapo she carried 121 pounds, and ran its mile and an eighth route in such remarkably fast time as 1:51 J. This year she was late In rounding into her best form, but at Saratoga showed she was herself again by winning the Merchants' and Citizens' Handicap and the Saratoga Cup. She is now in tine form, and likely to add to her reputation in Hie stakes yet to be run to which she is an eligible. At Gravosond she is in the First Special, Albemarle, Occidental Handicap and Second Special. Her record to date is as follows; Age. Sts. 1st. 2d. 3d. Unp. New York, September 17. Of all the hot tips that have heeii circulates! in the metropolitan paddocks tlds year that which made Rudolph Spreckels' BorghesI a sure thing in the fifth race at Sheepshcad Bay a few days ago was unquestionably the worst. Just who was responsible for it nobody could say, but the fact remains that nearly all the trainers had the old Brutus horse for a real good thing, and some of tho smartest bettors at the track fell with a dull, sickening thud. BorghesI, wince mining here from California, had shown nothing in public, but the ancient racer, it is said, worked so fast the other morning that the dockers timid not believe their watches. Early In the day. therefore, BorghesI was on Hie tip of the tongue. "If the old fellow is right," said Tom Welsh, "he will win easily." "BorghesI will roll home." said Frank Taylor, who trains for the Patchogue Stable. "It is between BorghesI and Tony Boucro," said Roger Mintou, who handles Kight Royal and other horses owned by Sam Lazarus. "The dope In the race is clear to me. Clare Russell cannot go the route, a mile and a sixteenth. Neither can Mark Antony II." Then horsemen and public plunged on BorghesI, backing him from 5 to :: to 1, and Ik; ran fifth in a siv horse Held twenty lengths behind .Marl; Antony 11., tin; winner and "gaining slowly" at the end. BorghesI, however, may use the speed ho showed in his work later. Smith May Train for Butler SMITH MAY TRAIN FOR BUTLER. New York. September 17. .lames Butler, promoter of the recent Yonkers meeting, intends to collect a stable for racing next year. He is said to have olfeivd the position of trainer to T. P. Hayes, who is said to have declined and suggested John I). Smith, of I'xinglon. Ky.. as a good man for the place. Smith trained for bis brother-in-law, the late Byron McClelland, at times, as well as for others and himself, having at one time and another charge of such well known good ones as Bardolpli, Maclvor, His Lordship. Jack Rattlin. June Gavle. King Leif, Macco, Lillian Bell and Ways and Means. It may be said that T. P. Hayes denies that any olfcr was ever made to him by Butler. Telegraphic Form TELEGRAPHIC FORM. Dolly Spanker, the some-time consistent handicap horse of the stable of Richard T. Wilson, Jr., is being entered nowaday in cheap selling races around Pvew York. This is quite a descent for a horse which, at Belmont Park last spriug, stepped a mile In better that 1:30. But Dolly cannot win handicaps any more. He is old and he has become cunning, and he will no longer extend himself under colors, although he works as swiftly and as willingly of mornings as he ever did. It might not be a bad idea for Mr. Wilson to make a jumper of Dolly Spanker. Dolly Is a horse of line size and muscular proportion. Weight should not bother him, nor is lie too old to learn a new game. Douro at seven learned to jump as well as any horse steeplechasing on this side of the Atlantic and William Garth has taught Graziallo to fence at live. The old-time notion that to make a successful jumper one must begin to school a horse at two, is no longer popular. And history is full of accounts of sulky, whimsical fellows running to their lornv when put through the field. A horse has little time to sulk In a steeplechase field. He must keep his mind on the business in hand or break his neck, and he realizes it.
