NO. 248. CHICAGO, "WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1907. PRICE 5 CENTS Convincing Win by Uncle: Hildreth's Colt Runs Fine Race for Rancho Del Paso CONVINCING WIN BY UNCLE. I HILDRETH'S COLT RUNS FINE RACE FOR RANCHO DEL PASO. 'He Scores as if Far the Best Jimmy Lane ' and Fultonville Also Win as Favorites 1 at Belmont Park. New York, October 15. The present spell of exquisite indian summer weather continued today, and with first-class racing at ISelmont Park the leisure class of easterners, as -well as the plain people, turned out in great numbers to on joy today's sport. The card was made up principally of over-night events, the solitary exception being the Rancho del Paso Stakes for two-year-olds, at six furlongs, over the straight-away course, and furnished interesting and varied sport. The unlucky but heroic Uncle achieved a tremcn- 1 dous victory in the stake feature. "Whether it was the change from Finn to Miller, the use of hood ami blinkers, or both, that worked -t lie marvelous improvement in the sturdy Star Shoot two-year-old, , as compared with his lamentable failure in the Nursery Handicap of Saturday last, the fact remains that Sam llildretli's colt dominated the situation today from the beginning, and won in such convincing manner that everybody agreed that he coiild have won the Nursery just as easily as lie won today's race had lie been similarly equipped in the matter of rider and head adornments. Virtually four public choices were successful during the afternoon. Lad of Langden stood on an equal footing with Summer Cloud and was more generally supported in the introductory cvejit. jimmy Lane, Fultonville and Uncle were pronounced favorites. As for the two others, Danoscara and Xc-mateor they were far from friendless in the betting; .Maidens, three years old and over, contested the first race. James It. Keene's well-bred Summer Cloud, with Miller up, was made the favorite, but the second choice, Lad of Langden, won from her in a closely contested linisli by less than a length, running the mile in 1 :.'!0. Ramrod . was a poor third, but ran a good. race. Lad of Langden has been .threatening to win for some time and was overdue. Constantia again showed speed, but failed l stay. Scratching reduced the steeplechase from thirteen entries down to a field of six starters, Jimmy Lane landing it for Gwyn Tompkins with consummate ease. Islam made a good impression by defeating Dr. Keith for second money. The .second choice, Garrett, fell early in the action. The third race was for maiden two-year-olds at seven furlongs. John Sanfordjs Fultonville was made an even-money favorite, and justified liis selection by winning with all ease from the outsider Monocle and Tully Coulter's promising Brother Jonathan. Rolando was threatening for a while, but he lias been doing that since last spring and must have cost hopeful people considerable by this time. The main feature of the afternoon, the Rancho del I'aso Stakes, for two-year-olds, was easy for Sam Hildreth's good colt, Uncle. He got off well, ran into the lead in the first furlong, and, never giving the others a chance, finally won pulled up hy a half dozen good lengths. The improving youngster, Falcada, outstayed Jim Gaffncy by a head for second place, the latter a similar distance in front of the added starter, Alfred Noble. Notas-ulga followed the winner closely to the stretch, then retired and is evidently not in her spring and arly summer form. At the weights Rouquet made :i surprisingly bad showing, even if she did get off loorly. The tabulated history of the Rancho del Paso Stakes is as follows: Yeiir. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. For the dash of seven furlongs for all ages th3r came fifth on the card, Don Enrique was a slight favorite over Johnnie RIakc at liberal odds, but Mr. Sanford's speedy Clifford filly, Danoscara, gave Hinr his second race of the day, coining from a poor .position in the last quarter with a great (light of speed, and winning by a safe margin from the two-year-old, Karl G., with Don Enrique a good third. Grimaldi led for a fast half and retired, being evidently short, and probably in preparation for an active campaign at Jamaica and Aqueduct. In the last race of the day Temaceo put up a fast performance at a mile and three sixteenths, jinrt won quite comfortably from the favorite, Cairngorm. The latter ran a good race also, and easily out-stayed Welbourne for second place. Temaceo :is a good one at present. Joe Yeager's Markers Are Paid JOE YEAGER'S MARKERS ARE PAID. New York, October 15. Joe Yeager, the western plitiiger, who was reported to have disappeared from the ".race track, leaving $30,000 in unpaid markers, is In good standing again. Yeager's agent, S. L. Gillespie, appeared at the track this afternoon and made good the amount, which, by the way, was little more than 2,400. Gillespie said Ycagcr was confined to his home by illness, which explains his absence from the track for several days. E. C. Smith May Go to Arcadia E. C. SMITH MAY GO TO ARCADIA. George Kose and Barney Schrelber are here, and the'' 'posts of secretary and, associate judge i ,-wlllbc filled -within forty-eight .hours. Good Racing at Windsor Track GOOD RACING AT WINDSOR TRACK. Detroit, Mich., October 15. A majority of the winners at Windsor this afternoon came from the ranks of well backed horses. The play, however, was light, the cold, raw weather having its effect on the attendance. The racing was spirited, the finishes in the second and fifth races being very close. The usual mishap came with the running of the steeplechase. Humorist and Judge Nolan falling at the last jump and stumbling over their riders. The race proved a well contested affair up to the time of the accident, Picktime and Humorist running in close company and taking several of the jumps on almost even terms. Going to the last jump, Picktime began to draw away from Humorist. Just as the pair took off, Picktime swerved across in front of Hpmorist and this was responsible for the latter coming to grief. The fifth race resulted in a great duel between Rather Royal and Harry Scott, in which the latter won by the smallest of margins. The pair fought it out head and head all the last three furlongs and, after a great stretch drive, which brought the backers of both horses to their feet, Harry Scott won. There was a lot of rough riding in the race, Baker, on Careless, crowding his field against the fence rounding the first turn. Foley, on Canopian, had all he could do to keep lilsl mount on his feet and the interference ruined whatever chance lie might have had. Among today's visitors was Charles Boyle, who arrived from the Klondyke a few days ago. Almost a dozen years ago Mr. Boyle backed a powerful stable on the western turf. He will remain in the east until next spring liefore returning to Alaska, where lie has extensive mining interests. The judges have been asked to straighten out a tangle over the services .of jockey Burton in the stake race tomorrow. Joseph .McLennan engaged Burton some days ago to ride Margot in this stake. Yesterday C. Pangritz obtained second call on Burton for tlie remainder of the meeting. He lias Oscar T. in the race and wishes to use the boy. Recent Deaths of Thoroughbreds RECENT DEATHS OF THOROUGHBREDS The following deaths are reported in the Racing Calendar of October 10; Weanling brown filly, by Octagon Gwendolyn, owned by A. Belmont. For 1910 the Belmont lias been changed from a guaranteed value stake to one with added money. At present it is of the value of .$25,000, which was increased to $.10,000 for 1909. The Belmont of 1910 is to have $20,000 added money. The nomination fees have been made light and in the long run the new move should result in greatly increased values to the winners. $25,000 Offered for Mackay Colt $25,000 OFFERED FOR MAC KAY COLT. New York, October 15. An English offer of $25-,000 is said to have been .made within the last two days to Clarence Mackay for the Meddler Won-by-Waiting colt, which is now In England and is nominated for the Epsom Derby, and other English stakes of 1909. The offer was declined. LOUISVILLE TROUBLE NOT SERIOUS. Betting on Kentucky Race Tracks Is Leqal in Every Way. The. trouble in Kentucky has been bridged over by the action of the State Racing Commission granting the Louisville dates to Latonia. the meeting at which track will continue until November 2. There does not seem to be any real cause for the fear that racing is menaced In Kentucky. The clear general opinion is that politics caused the Louisville trouble, the dominant party just now being bitterly opposed to President Grainger of the New Louisville Jockey Club a politician of great activity and inlluence himself. There will be a new set of city officials elected shortly, and no further trouble is anticipated after they arc seated. It is not believed that tlie racing situation in Kentucky will be seriously affected by the abandonment of this meeting. Such is the opinion of Kcntuckiaus iii Chicago . and it is echoed by T. C. .McDowell and Colonel A. W. Hamilton from Xew York. The Kentucky law in relation to betting on a race track is clearly favorable and the favor was reiterated in a decision rendered March 29. 1S99 in the ease of the l.aliinia Agricultural and Stock Association against Donnelly, tax collector, etc.. and went up on appeal from the Circuit Court of Kenton County. The Latonia association sought to enjoin the collection of taxes upon its franchise assessed by the Board of Valuation and assessments for the year 1S97, pursuant lo Section 4077. of the Kentucky statutes, which pnides for the payment of franchise taxes by corporations and associations having or exercising any special or excursion privilege or franchise not allowed by law to natural persons. Judge Burnani, delivering the opinion of the Appellate Court, closed by saying: "We are of the opinion that this provision of appellant's charter legalizes the sale of pools made by it. or under its authority, on its grounds, and protects it against the civil liability denounced by the statute against natural persons who are engaged in the same or similar occupations; and it, therefore, becomes and is valuable, special and ex--elusive privilege within the meaning of the statute, and renders appellant liable for the payment of the franchise tax provided by the statute. "In view of the conclusion which we have reached on this point, it will be unnecessary to consider other suggestions made by counsel for appellees as to appellant's liability. For the reasons indicated the judgment is affirmed." Thirty Leading Owners THIRTY LEADING OWNERS. The Whitney stable is in good form just now and with nearly $1S,000 won last week by its horses, drew away from the others nearly as far as the Keene stable has drawn away from it. Dorante's win helped Chinn & Forsythe and both the Ken-lucky firm and L. A. Cella got into the leading thirty, displacing E. It. Thomas and P. J. Rainey. At Aqueduct his nominations are to the Aqueduct Handicap, Election Day Handicap and Edgemere Stakes; so he may add materially to his winning account before going into winter quarters. "Parson" Parkes, English Trainer "PARSON" PARKES, ENGLISH TRAINER. London, Eng., October 15. One of the characters on the British turf is "Parson" Parkes, who trains for W. H. Pansom and. others at Epsom. Mr.. Parkes is a regularly ordained minister. Shortly after his ordination, in 1SS9, lie became vicar of a parish in Leicestershire, but the call of the turf was too strong for him and he forsook the pulpit to become a trainer of thoroughbreds. It Is not known how he ranked as a parson, but Parkes Is a good trainer. Will Respess Race in California WILL RESPESS RACE IN CALIFORNIA? San Francisco, Cal.,October 15. Presiding Judge Hopper, who is now officiating in the stand at Latonia, has advised Secretary Treat that J. IS. Res-pess, one of the owners of the Latonia track, will try the local game this winter. At the close of the Louisville meeting he will ship ten horses to Emeryville, In charge of Foreman Kerby. Respess has no Dick Welles in his present collection, but his barn always shelters some good horses, and his stable will doubtless be a desirable acquisition to the local racing forces. Judge Hopper also states that John Hall is figuring' on shipping his crack sprinter, Gold-' proof, and half a dozen other horses to the coast this winter. Velocity May Not Race Again VELOCITY MAY NOT RACE AGAIN. The English exchanges explain the reasons for Velocity's absence from the big Paris race in which he was expected to start on Sunday, October 6. In the running of the Doncaster Cup, his most Impressive and brilliant victory, Velocity's leg "popped." At first it was not believed to be serious, J but it Is feared now that he will never race again. On looks, form and breeding, Velocity looks to be an assured stud success, and It is predicted that his owner, Mrs, H. V. Jackson, would have no difficulty in getting $100,000 for the splendid grandson of Ilampton It she desired to dispose of him.. Latonia Meeting Goes On: Louisville Dates Go to the Kenton Country Course . LATONIA MEETING GOES ON. i LOUISVILLE DATES GO TO THE KENTON COUNTY COURSE. Commission Considers Some Rules Which Vastly Increase Its Power Abolishes Present Style of Betting. Lexington, Ky., October 15. At a special meeting of the State Racing Commission here today the Latonia Jockey Club was given permission to run off the Louisville meeting of sixteen days. The Latonia meeting will therefore continue sixteen days. A resolution was adopted abolishing bookraaklng on the tracks in Kentucky. The rule does not go into effect for thirty days, when the present Latonia meeting will be a thing of the past, but in 190S booking can be done only in the fashion of that followed by tiie eastern tracks. The Young resolution or rule will divorce racing from gambling, as 1c is alleged the Jockey Club divorces it. The other rule .by Mr. Young takes the privilege of racing, training or riding from self-constituted turf liodies and gives it to the Racing Commission, which is power similar to that of both the New York Commission and the Jockey Club. Latonia Is "Well Satisfied. Cincinnati, 0., October 15. There was an added zest to the racing this afternoon after the announcement that the State Racing Commission had looked reasonably on the request of .the Latonia Jockey Club for an emergency extension and granted them sixteen days, the number surrendered by the New Louisville Jockey Club. As the time is too short to promulgate a, new racing program and have badges printed to cover the extra period, the Lonisville condition book, excepting those races subscribed to by the merchants of the Falls City, will be run off in its entirety. The badges originally intended for Churchill Downs will also be used. The added announcement that the Racing Commission had introduced a resolution to divorce the betting ring from the racing was also received favorably. It is taken as an indication that it would place the sport on a footing equal to that existing in New York. The same betting system In vogue now on metropolitan courses will naturally be used in Kentucky next year. Centre Shot Falls and Is Hurt. Cincinnati, 0., October 15. What probably was the best offering in a racing way since the currenr. meeting began, caused a big gathering to assemble at Latonia this afternoon. The crowd was amply rewarded, as the sport was keen throughout and several well contested finishes were seen. Two handicaps, one at .1 mile and a sixteenth and one over the middle distance, six furlougs, for sprinters, served as features. The first named went to Light Wool after a sharp struggle for three-quarters. In the stretch he drew out to win by a good margin from Lexolinc. Old Honesty, freshly arrived from a losing trip in the cast, took third place. The sprinting handicap was marred slightly by a mishap to Centre Shot. This recent $5,000 acquisition to the Walker stable and her stable companion, Stanley Fay, were top favorites in' the race. Soon after the start Stanley Fay crowded Centre Shot, and a moment later she was run into by Colonel Bob. Both mishaps unbalanced and threw Brown, her rider, out of the saddle. The filly then in some way became tangled in the bridle aud, bolting through the track fence, fell and landed on a, broken bottle, cutting a deep gash in her side, from which she will be a long time in recovering. Rustle, showing a sudden reversal of form, anil favored by her light impost, Avon after a sharp brush to shake off Stanley Fay. McChord's victory in the sixth was attended by a run-up. He was in for $500, and J. McCnllougii bid him up $400 over this amount, and failed to get him. Judge Hopper today terminated his connection here, and in future J. B. Dillon will be the presiding official. William Shelley will serve as asso- ciate judge, and Walter Pearce will supplant Shelley as starting judge. No other changes among the officials will take place. The judges today restored to full favor jockeys Shilling and Powers. Lycurgns will be allowed to resume riding as soon as he can bring a certificate from a physician to the effect that he is in good shap physically. Jockey Koerner was fined $25 by the starter for disobedience at the post. S. K. Hughes will ship his horses home tomorrow to be turned out for the season. Hildreth Yearlings Are Promising I 1 1 i l s , ' : ' HILDRETH YEARLINGS ARE PROMISING Oakland, Cal., October lii, Trainer John Lowe has begun to give Ilildretli's yearlings lessons in the racing game. Some of the youngsters are on parade mornings, and are breezed an eighth of a mile in sets. They show they can run, as about all of them often breeze furlongs around twelve seconds. In fact, bangers-on about the track say that at least twenty of the juveniles can show an eighth in as good time as twelve seconds. Among the latest arrivals at the Oakland track are: J. M. Crane, from Vallejo, with the horses ISyronerdale, Nigrette, Gage Taylor, Billy Watkins, Billy Jlyer, Be Thankful, John II. Slieehan and two yearlings. A. I!. I'omeroy got in from Seattle with live head, as follows: Darthula, Adele Brooks, Charlotte B., San Ramon and Kismet, Jr. From Petaluma came Burleigh and Gypsy King, the property of John B. Smith. Matt lteese is in with Miss Officious, Kntre Xous, Dr. Coleman and Herives, and Phil Itiley brought Daruma, Alvin II., Pacilico, Banlada and Gorgalete. From Kenilworth Farm came W. W. Ferriss' lot, headed by Vinton, AVaboo, Seasick, Itay Egan, Iteno Itebel and several yearlings. The other horses in the string are pretty shifty platers, as shown by the fact that they won something like thirty races during the summer. Finn has a more desirable acquisition to the local racing forces in jockey Heatherton. Ileatherton, who ranked second to E. Walsh at the Butte meeting, will probably prove to be one of the best lightweight riders at Oakland this winter. Jack Bonnet's stable from Xew York, beaded by Flip Flap, is expected daily. Twelve stalls have been reserved for these horses. Paul Itaiuey has applied for stable accommodation for live horses at the Emeryville track. D. Kelly will bring ten horses from Xew York, and T. M. Cassidy will come witli Bight and True and one other horse. Blagg and the horses of the Lee stable are on the way. Blagg was the champion of the three-year-old division at the Butte summer meeting, where he was unbeaten, and numberejl among his victories several stakes, including the big feature of the meeting, the Independence Day handicap. Since the Butte meeting Blagg and the others of the stable have been turned out at Lee's place, near St. Joseph, Mo., and, benefited by the rest, the crack three-j-ear-old will have to be reckoned with in the events for his age at the coming meeting. Incidentally, the younger Lee now controls these horses, and instead of being raced as heretofore in the name of J. T. Lee & Son, they will run as the property of L. O. Lee. Bookmaker John Troy has returned to his home in Alameda from Spokane, where he booked during the meeting. "I have worked at many a meeting," said Troy, "and I don't believe I ever saw a better one, from a bookmaker's viewpoint. The attendance was very large, the turnstile count showing' that 14,000 persons passed through the gale one day, and the betting was line. There were fourteen books in line and jointly they handled as high as .fSO.OOO in an afternoon." Racing Dates for 1907 and 1908 RACING DATES FOR 1907 AND 1908.
