Sandy Creeker Scores for Harbor Hill Cup The Race Full of Mishaps Number One and Danoscara Win. New York, October 17. Having at Belmont Park today was carried on under the most favorable conditions of exquisite Indian Summer weather, a fast track and big attendance. Two stake races, the Harbor Hill Cup Steeplechase for three-year-old candidates to future jumping distinction and the long-established Itamapo Handicap ror tlirec-year-olds serving as the major attractions of the day. Both events were productive of keenly contested finishes, but, while the jumping race fell to the favorite, the Kamapo resulted in a disastrous upset in which the four starters finished in a bunch with the longest priced horse of all in the lead by a few Inches. That lie ;s now more than an average two-year-old, Number One showed by taking up 12G pounds and running a mile in 1::'.'J in the first race of the day. Live "Wire was the favorite and ran, a creditable race also, but Number One was leading Iiiin by a good two lengths at the end. Countermand seems to be an improving young horse and easily disposed of Antaeus for third money. The valuable Harbor Hill Cup Steeplechase for three-year-olds was an interesting affair, but its running was inuired by mischances, sis of the eleven starters falling at different stages. In his last race Sandy Creeker had won, but was disqualified for fouling. lie was made the favorite here and, making no mistakes this time, went into the lead in the second mile- and finally won in good style in a well contested finish with .Economy. Touchwood, which won when Sandy Creeker was disqualified, was a distant third. The tubulated history of the Harbor Hill Cup Steeplechase is as follows: Yenr. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. Perseverance and Monfort were scratched from the Itamapo Handicap, leaving but four to go. Of these Gold Lady was an odds-on favorite and Faust the extreme outsider in the betting. In the race this order was reversed, for at the finish. Cold 'Lady was last and Faust first. It was a very fast run milt' and an eighth and since no more than a length and a half separated the first and last horses. Cold Lady, giving the winner twenty-four pounds, was by no means disgraced. The finish was close, Faust barely heading Toiircnne out with Killaloe a close up third. The tabulated history of the Itamapo Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. With Dolly Spanker, Sea Wolf and Adoration withdrawn, the fifth race also became an affair of four starters, with Danoscara a red-hot favorite and the winner in a spirited finish with Welbourne. Kockstone ran better than was anticipated and it took all of Miller's skill to prevent him from depriving Welbourne of second money. Wes was the hoartily backed favorite for the last race of the day, witli Golden Shore second choice and also well supported. The latter got otf first and, leading all the way, win a fast-run mile with Wes second. Tha latter got off badly and closed a great gap in the last half, but finally tired from the effort to get up. If off well, he would unquestionably have won. Zipango ran consistently ami was a good third. Jockey McAfee was badly cut about the face from his falling in the steeplechase. Davy Johnson lost two wagers of $5,000 each on Live Wire and Gold Lady. Mr. Gwathmcy, of Boston, who races as "Mr. Cotton," has taken up the sport of steeplechasing again. Windsor Racing Closes Saturday WINPSOR RACING CLOSES SATURDAY. Detroit, Mich., Octoher 17. Racing conditions that could not have been improved helped to draw out the banner crowd of the meeting at Windsor this afternoon. The weather was warm, while the track was af its best. TJvenly balanced fields went to the post in all sis of the events, the feature of which was an all-aged handicap at one mile. Before the first race the management announced that with the. running of Saturday a program the meeting would come to a close. This means that it will end the racing season in these parts for ip07. Many of the horsemen will ship direct to New Orleans to await the opening of the winter season at the City Park course. Some few will go to California, among them Edward Trotter, while the balance will ship to Baltimore. Favorites won three races today, the successful choices being J. W. O'Neill, Little- Wally and Thurbet. Morcland and J. Murphy each rode two winners. In the mile handicap Mode Nii-oll's A vaunt cor showed startling improvement over his previous efforts. He was a good horse today and ran like one that had been rejuvenated. When the start came he left the post like a scared rabbit and dashed iulo a long lead. The further they went the bigger the gap he opened on his field, anil, passing the winning mark, he had a six-lengths lead over Glimmer. The pace throughout was very fast, the mile being run in 1::!0J. In the steeplechase Littly Wally was backed by a wise division for a good thing and he won in handsome fashion. Of the eight which went to the post, only three finished and at the end Little Wally was fifteen lengths in front of Picktiino. which was second. At the start Kussell A. propped and refused to join his field. Bonn finally got him going and at the first jump he stopped suddenly and unseated his rider. The Chef and Tony Hart also came to grief at this jump, both horses falling. Dr. Koch lost his rider at the ninth jump, while Snowdrift also lost her rider during the running of the race. The only close finish of the afternoon came with the running of the fourth race, which was won by Thurbet by a neck from Linda Lake after a great stretch drive. The following owners ship to Baltimore 011 Saturday: M. llogan, .1. S. Flymi, J. W. Pangle, Henry Mason and George Uichings. Good Day's Racing Ar Latonia: Steeplechase Feature Gives a Farcical Win to Class Leader GOOD DAY'S RACING AT LATONIA. Steeplechase Feature Gives a Farcical Win to Class Leader. Cincinnati, 0.. October 17. Fine -weather was mainly responsible for attracting a big attendance at Latonia today. Small but ordinary fields were the order, the steeplechase which featured the card only having a quartet of starters. As a contest this race was farcical. Class Leader, steadily supported, showed good general form and extreme speed, held sway throughout and won in a common canter from the poorly ridden and odds-on favorite, Pete Vinegar. Itiicatiara finish nd almost the length of the stretch in advance of Glad Pirate, the other starter. Pete Vinegar was sore going to the post. Bottles showed a return of good form when he easily disposed of his opponents in the seven furlong race. AVoolstone displayed a lot of speed during the first part of the race, but Bottles, kept hint on bis toes for three-quarters, after which Wooistone had had enough, and was beaten out by Telegrapher and County Clerk. The poor showing of Beatrice K., which shared favoritism with Bottles, was adversely criticized, and it is probable the judges will inquire Into her running. She is said to have run away a mile and a furlong this morning. The poor send-off in the second race was responsible for Miss Padden's failure to get a place. Mark Time, Refined and No Quarter, which finished in the order named, were only noses apart. Divorcee again failed her backers and landed outside of the money in the opening race. J. Lee spoiled a well-laid plan for J. B. Itespess to execute a betting coup on his colt Joe Moser in the fifth. The colt was winning easily when Lee pulled away from the inner rail aud allowed Rebel Queen to slip into victory over him by a neck. Marbles, a recent arrival from the east, was an overwhelming choice in the race, but is evidently out of racing condition, for she failed to get a place. The Clansman, favored by the most racing luck, won the closing race after a hard effort in the final strides to outlast Louise Macfarlan. Jockey V. l'owers was lined $50 by the judges for rough riding in the last race. Barney Schreiber was among today's visitors. lie slated his visit was to help his trainer Dave Henry make preparations for departure to Oakland. Herman Brandt, in charge of the eastern division, will race the horses this winter in Xew Orleans and John Powers will have charge of the horses Schreiber intends to send to Los Angeles. After a ma.tch trial between W. T. Overton and Honest at a quarter of a mile, run in about 221 seconds aud in which Overton showed a clean pair or heels to Honest. Milton A'oung was so impressed that he bought Overton for a sum said to be $5,000. F.. Liliby sued to regain possession from A. Xoble the horses Dell Leath, Orthodox and Phil Becker. He was succssful and in future they will be raced here. J. Walters arrived today with four horses that he intends to race. Grande Dame has been turned out for the winter. Part of G. J. Long's horses will be shipped here from Xew York. J. S. Hawkins will arrive tomorrow from Louisville with seven horses. Mr. Smith will take up his official duties immediately after the close of the metropolian racing season November 15. John Bodcn will launch the new enterprise and remain in absolute control of the management of the racing end of it until pressure of business in connection with the New York State Racing Conimisison and the Brighton Beach Association, both of which he is secretary, demands his presence in New York, which will he early in January. Capital Race in Prospect CAPITAL RACE IN PROSPECT. One of the recently closed Aqueduct stakes affords opportunity for a truly great race. This is the Edgemere Stakes. It is a dash of a mile and an eighth at weight for age and has among its nominations such cracks of the present year as Running Water, Ballot, Glorifier, Charles Edward, Ncalon, Brookdale Nymph and McCarler, to say nothing of such other comparatively minor stars as Blue Book, Kentucky Beau, Yankee Girl, Tourenue, Beacon 1 Light, Right Royal, Bedouin, Running Account, Mainchance, Go Between and Ironsides. The whims 1 of owners often spoil what appears a grand prospect 011 paper and such may prove the case here, - but there Is at least the chance for a race worthy of any track in the land. How Colin Got His Big Hock HOW COLIN GOT HIS BIG HOCK. New York, October 17. The facts regarding the origin of Colin's hig hock are these. When a yearling last fall Colin was kicked on the outside of the bony part of the hock of his left hind leg, and the bone was cracked. Autiphlogistine was applied to draw out the soreness. Instead of doing ' so it had the effect of drawing out the oil in the ! joint and left the hock enlarged. The enlarged 1 part has been steadily reduced during the season 1 by massage, and the swelling is hardly perceptible . now. It is a fact that yesterday Colin trotted to , the lwst sore in front, which was slightly more , ' apparent after the race. Peter Sterling for California PETER STERLING FOR CALIFORNIA. Peter Sterling is to lie taken to California and ( campaigned by Ed Trotter. His last start was i for the Champlain Handicap at Saratoga in which 1 he ran unplaced to Dandelion, Vails and Oxford, , but ran a good race and finished a close up fourth 1 in a fast run mile and an eighth. He is a good 1 horse when right and should rank among the top-notchers at Oakland and Arcadia next winter. His mile and a sixteenth in7 1:45 flat with 115 pounds up when lie won the Canadian Sportsman's Handicap at Fort Erie, August 24, shows what he can do when at his best. He ran the first mile j in 1:372 on that occasion. J. J. M' Cafferty Gets a License J. J. M'CAFFERTY GETS A LICENSE. New York, October 17. Seven Two-Year-Old Stars: American Youngsters Which Were Not Defeated in Their Races 1 1 ' ! 1 1 . , , ' ( i 1 , 1 1 j " ' . j r ) t s SEYEN TWO-YEAR-OLD STABS AMERICAN YOUNGSTERS WHICH WERE NOT DEFEATED IN "THEIR RACES. Six Colts, from Sensation to Colin, and One Filly, The Butterflies, Make Up the List from 1879. ' Very few years pass without two-year-olds that arc undefeated, by virtue, of few starts and in moderate company. But the undefeated ones of high class, which battle with their compeers, aro few and far between. Colin's career, is so remarkable and interesting that some notice of the other great undefeated ones of the past is worth bringing 'to the attention of readers of Daily Raciug Form. Of them it can be said that they were all remarkable race horses, and, allowing for differences in tracks and several racing conditions, probably would have been able to hold their own worthily when at their best with the more familiar stars of recent years, could such a thing be brought about. George Lorillard's Sensation, Star of 1879. Sensation was a beautiful brown colt of faultless action and groat speed. In his time tracks were deep and slow, and the richest stakes were. scant in value compared with those abundantly provided for the juvenile racers of today. He did in his year all that Colin has done this year, . met all the good youngsters of his time and vanquished them conclusively. All of his races were for stakes. He was the property of George Loril-lard throughout his racing career, which only covered his year of triumph. Sickness in the winter following his two-year-old racing incapacitated him from further service on the track. Subsequently he was a successful sire. His racing record, the, year being 1S70, was as follows: Race. Track. DIst. Time. Value. The year 1SS0 was one of great triumphs for the powerful stable owned by Dwyer Brothers, no horse contributing more effectively than the black two-year-old colt, Treimmt, by Virgil Ann Fcif, by Lexington. He was a truly wonderful two- year-old, exceedingly quick on his feet, aud usually away from the post so fast that his opponents were beaten from the start in vain efforts to match the electric speed he at once developed. In none of his races was there even approximately a close finish, except in the solitary instance of the Surf Stakes at Slieepshcad Bay. Here, in a bad start, ho was practically left at the post, hut took after the others and finally won from Queen of Elizabeth by three-quarters of a length. In all of his other races it was Tremont first at the finish in a canter anywhere from three lengths to ten lengths in front. In the Junior Champion Stakes he defeated such a celebrity as Kingston by eight lengths. Tre- mont's season's record was as follows: Race. Track, Bist. Time. Value. This other colt was Hau- over, a" chestnut colt by Hindoo Bourlion Belle, Tremont was campaigned extensively, hut Hanover was only started in three races. His first essay was in the Hopeful Stakes at Monmouth Park, which he won from Fitzroy with some difficulty by a half length. Then he won the July Stake3 from Oneko, again by a half length, but carried 120 pounds to Oneko's 110. His last race was when he won the Sapling Stakes from Kingston by two lengths. In after years, besides being one of the highest-class racers of American turf history, lift also became a great sire when retired to the stud. His two-year-old career was: Race. Track, . Bist. Time. The Emperor was a bay, but iil Rio Key was a big chestnut of mag-nificeiiLappearance, a model of symmetry and power, lie was bred, owned and raced by Theodore Winters of Nevada. His first start was in the St. Louis Brewers' Stakes at St. Louis. Then he was brought to Chicago, and at Washington Park won the Kenwood Stakes, Hyde Park Stakes and a purse. Taken east from here ho won the Croat Eclipse Stakes, White Plains Handicap and Dimmow Stakes at the first meeting ever held at Morris Park. His ilight of speed was meteoric, and no weight was too much for his powerful frame. In his first race at AVash-ington Park, with 1215 pounds up, he stumbled and almost fell directly after the start going down so far that' his face was squarely against the track. Yet he recovered and in an amazing Ilight of speed S overtook his far-away competitors and finally won from Lord Peyton by a length. Developing lameness after winning the Dunmow he was retired, lie was trained the following year, but, fearing he would break down, Mr. Winters concluded to race him no more. The wager on Littleton Maid was a draw. Betting is a matter of exactness and you should have backed the entry specifically. IT. G. W., Chicago. Where a bet is made on a coupled entry without naming the race action is on the first race in which such entry starts and your parlay should be paid in full with Light Wool as one of your winners. Henry O., St. Louis, Mo. The wager was a winner. The Keene entry won and Danoscara ran, meeting all the essential conditions. The mistake as to ownership cut no figure in this case and the bookmaker was as much to blame as the backer. Notes of the Turf NOTES OF THE TURF. Major Eustace Loder's smart filly by Gallinule Admiration, an own sister to the famous mare, Pretty Polly, has been named Miranda. The New Zealand sire Cuirassier, which died last month at the age of twenty-twc, was a pretty good racehorse, and an own brother to the much more celebrated Trenton. Velocity will not run in Paris, or probably ever again, one of his tendons having gone wrong. If he had competed at Longchainps 1 much question whether Velocity would have got the severe mile and a half in the Prix du Conseil Municipal, as the race is always run from end. to end. Audax in Horse and Hounds. Oiseau and Water Light have arrived at George II. Whitney's Melrose Stud in Kentucky, where they had been sent by Matt Allen for James B. Brady. They will stand the season of 100S for service to outside mares. Brady, says Allen, might buy some brood mares next year to mate with Oiseau and Waler Light. Telegraphic Form TELEGRAPHIC FORM. Lexington, Ky., October 17. Cars to transport the horses of 11. L. Thomas from Latonia and Lexington to California, have been ordered' for November 4. There will be thirty-six head in all, nineteen being yearlings now being handled at the local track by Dan T. Morris. There wili be one carload belonging to Mr. Thomas to leave the east about the tame time. Whether these horses will be shipped to San Francisco Or Los Angeles, is a matter for Mr. Thomas' future determination. It was his origiual intention to race at Oakland, hut when here last Sunday he said that because of the troubles of jockey Shilling at Latonia and the attitude of Judge Hopper, who is to be the presiding official at Oakland, he had about made up his mind to go to Los Angeles. Many of the yearlings at the local track are alllicted with a mouth disease and there is likelihood that it will become epidemic. However, no serious results are expected. The trainers say that the worst that can happen will be the setback in the breaking and training of the baby racers. There are nineteen weanlings at Kingston Stud and thirteen of them are colts, an unusually large and, to Manager Hill, a highly pleasing percentage of the latter. Oots Brothers will send about twenty horses to New Orleans Tor t lie winter meeting. They have about that many In training here In addition to the string now at Latonia. Colonel W. E. Applegate has bought more than his usual number of yearlings tills reason. W. J. Young is breaking twelve for him at the local track. REFINED . . 6-i, 2nd was yesterday's DAILY 1-HORSE WIRE.
