RUNS AWAY FROM ARASEE IN THE REMSEN HANDICAP. i Muddy Track at Jamaica Causes Small Fields Handzarra Wins One at Last Long Shots in Front. New York, October 2S. Torrential rains for tlie preceding twelve hours converted tlie track at Jamaica into a muddy and (.-anal-like oval today. i Tlie footlnpr, however, was linn underneath and comparatively fast Jlme was jiosslble. Tlie unto- ward weather conditions affected the attendance seriously. Extreme dilliculty attended the task of obtaining tlie various position of the horses' running on account of the fogs which came up and obstructed the view at intervals during the afternoon. Excepting the first and and last races, which were for moderate class two-year-olds, the card was seriously depleted by scratches. The running of the stake fixture, the itemsen Handicap, resulted in a ridiculously easy victory for the Cesarion colt. King Cobalt, which was? the best served of the six stnrters by the sloppy going. The winner was backed into hot favoritism on the strength of his well known prowess in the mud. notwithstaudlgg such formidable opposition as Arasce. last Saturday's stake victor over tlie best of his age in present training. Dugan. . 1,323 1:07s The real and sensational feature of the afternoon's racing was reserved for the close, in which Infanta, a Keene cast-off, recently purchased at Auction for the paltry sum of $700, made her debut on the turf by defeating a big baud of maidens at odds of ."0 to 1. Only a select few benefited by fhe beautiful J)isguise filly's win and there was general, moaning after the race on account of the big losses in wagers incurred by tlie public on Imitator, Lady Corihne and Lotus Brandt, the lirst, second and third choices in the last race respectively. -Infauta was a very promising yearling and early in lier two-year-old form was accounted the best of the juvenile lllly division of the Keene stable, hilt last summer's epidemic, of coughing affected Infanta more seriously than it did the others in the stable and to such an extent was her usefulness impaired in the opinion of trainer James Howe, that she was allowed to be put up at auction and sold for only a fraction of her value, even as a broodmare. D'Arkle. the extreme but well-backed, outsider of the trio of starters, that trainer James Fitz-siinmons saddled, was the only one that made a decent showing. He finished a good second. The other two, Frank Lublock, equal favorite with the winner, and Workman, the fourth choice, finished last and next to the last respectively. Frederick Johnson, who has been seriously ill for several days, was not at Jamaica Saturday to see his filly. Lady Winifred, run in the Lynnbrook Handicap, having suffered a relapse. Mr. Johnson's recently named yearling fillies. Ilammerless and Alerry Widow, made the fastest trials yet shown at Belmont Park when the pair wre sent a quarter Saturday in 23 seconds against the wind and each having 122 pounds up. While Fred liurlew expects to race the big stable of Burlew & O'Neill at New Orleans this winter, he has made nominations to stakes to lie run at both of the California tracks. Some of the horses in the stable are for sale, and eliglbiiity to race on the coast might help make a sale. Notwithstanding this view, Mr. liurlew says he-might send a small string to California to race this winter. II. T. fJrifliu left for Oakland with two carloads of race horses yesterday. John Rowe will race his recent purcluise and destined jumper, Judith AIcBridc, at Los Angeles Miis winter. . Master Robert, the crack two-year-old, will not race at Oakland after all, but will be wintered in the east. New Orleans Betting Plans: Canadian Way of Operating Ring May Rule Latonia Gossip NEW ORLEANS BETTING PLANS. Canadian Way of Operating Ring May Rule Latonia Gossip. Cincinnati, O., October 2S. The eastern style of bettltig will not be tried out here. Messrs. Apple-gate and Winn were anxious to test the system Tor a couple of days, but the bookmakers balked. It looks very nuicli at present as if big slates and betting booths will not he used in New Orleans this winter. The bookmakers will sit on high stools and tickets will be given to each bettor. The system will be similar to that used in Canada. St. Yoluia. in charge of Hoy Cassidy, got in from New York Friday. The horse has seemingly recovered from the injury he sustained at Saratoga, and will more than likely be the best jumper iu New Orleans. Ferriss could have got a big price for the horse, Aicssrs. Colt and Widener being anxious to add him to their strings, but the injury he sustained to his foot by running with a wrenched nlate caused negotiations to be broken off. There will be several departures this week for California of horsemen who will begin the season at Oakland. It is not thought possible that the Los Angeles track will be finished before December 1. Many stables will after this meeting be shipped to Churchill Downs aud wintered there. T. P. Hayes is among the number who will go to Louisville. J. C. Milam will send all his horses to Lexington and keep them there until Hot Springs openH. He is trying, to win three purses this week, which will give him sixty races for the season. His horses have been in the money over 130 times during the year. The New Orleans contingent will take 'matters easy for a couple of days after the close here, and there will probably be two special trains to convey the stock south. Pat Dunne will probably ho the last one to leave' here. Roscrrian was badly hurt when he was cut down, and it will be a long time before he goes to the post again. Lens pulled up limping badly after yesterday's race. Toddles Dies at New Orleans TODDLES DIES AT NEW ORLEANS. Cincinnati, O., October 2S. Mose Goldblatt was a visitor at Latonia today, having arrived from Now York, where ho recently bought the good filly Keep Moving. He received a message daring the afternoon , from New Orleans, where his horses are at present, announcing the death of Toddles. Nathanson Goes to 'Frisco NATHANSON GOES TO 'FRISCO. Martin Nathnnson left Chicago last night over the North-Western for Oakland and immediately upon bis arrival there will plunge Into tlie mass of work awaiting bird. Numerous Scratches at Latonia: Large Fields Reduced on Account of Heavy Track - Melzar Disappoints Backers i i NUMEROUS SCRATCHES AT LATONIA. Large Fields Reduced on Account of Heavy Track Melzar Disappoints Backers. Cincinnati, O., October 25. For the first time since the continuation of the Latonia meeting tlie track was in a state that required horses built on sturdy lines to negotiate the going successfully. Originally a card possessing many horses in the different races was scheduled, but, because of the sticky going, twenty-three withdrawals were posted. Form calculations were upset, and the talent fared well to have two of their choices reward confidence. The winning pair were Dainty Belle aud (Jranada. The steeplechase as a spectacle provided good sport, hut from a betting point, of view much fault was found with AicCluro's .handling of Class Leader, the favorite. The rider allowed him to trail his opponents far out of it, and in the stretch run he took him a zigzag course which cost him second place, W. K. Slade winning from Blaeklock. wi'h Sam Hoffheimer in third place a head In advance of the favorite. Pete Yinegar unseated his rider at the first obstacle, ran with his field until the water jump, then bolted and fell while trying to negotiate the main track rail. Colonel liob's defeat by I'inkola was unexpected, and resulted in considerable protit to W. II. Fizcr and his connections, who backed the Pink Coat youngster heavily. .Merrick enabled J. C. Milam to secure another purse when he beat out Italbert. a Milam cast-off, in the sixth. Merrick's victory, however, was mainly due to the good handling of C. Koeruer. F.thel Carr furnished the chief surprise of the afternoon by her easy victory in th'e second over Melzar and other good youngsters. Alifcar was smartly cut about the right foreleg, and this partly accounted for her poor showing. Dainty Hello made amends to P. Dunne for Mel-Kir's defeat by winning the third in a romp. At a meeting of the executive committee of the New Louisville Jockey Club held yesterday, jockey Dearborn was restored to good standing. The rider had been suspended for a faulty ride on Beau Brummel during the spring term of racing. Charles Hughes was among the visitors. He is on his way to Lexington to iuspect several youngsters owned by his employer, Henry Ziegler. Ed Alvev purchased the yearling lllly by Lissak Trousseau III., and half-sister to Paul Clifford, from Robert Tucker. (J. W. Poole will ship the horses now in his charge to Los Angeles at the close of this meeting. Miller Sanderson will send a consignment to New Orleans next week. AY. II. Williams will take Carthage, Hans and several others for a winter campaign at the Crs-eeut ' City. AY. L. Kirby, in addition to baring charge of the field books at both New Orleans tracks, will race a string of horses owned by J. I!. Respess. Kirbv is eager to secure several long-distance racers. It Is more than likely that AYilliam Shelly will officiate as starter for the first week of the City Park meeting, pending the arrival of Mars Cassidy, who will wield the flag at Benning. L. A. Jockey Dugan's Losing Streak JOCKEY DUGAN'S LOSING STREAK. New York, October 28. E; Dugan is experiencing a streak of hard luck rarely .-encountered by a jockey of his class. "Twenty-seven mounts without a winner," said Tom Healey in the paddock at Jamaica Friday before- the last race. Yellowback a Promising Jumper: Takes Three-Year-Old Steeplechase at Pimlico Botanist Wins Handicap YELLOWBACK A PROMISING JUMPER. Takes Three-year-old Steeplechase at Pimlico Botanist Wins Handicap. Baltimore Md., October 2S. Hacing at Pimlico today was carried on under rather unfavorable conditions. A cold wind swept the track and occasional showers drove the spectators to cover. Muddy going upset the calculations of the speculators and caused many scratches. The feature of the day, the Merchants' Handicap, was reduced bv scratches to throe starters. Of these. Botanist looked far and away the best. lie went to the post a 1 to 2 favorite and simply cantered home. W. Shields furnished the surprise of the day when his Yellowback got home first in the steeplechase for three-year-olds, beating out the favorite. Touchwood, which AYilliam Garth had proclaimed a cinch. Yellowback showed himself a rattling good fencer and lie stuck to Touchwood all the wav through the field like a leech and outgamed the Garth hoive in the run on the (lat. King's Plate, which li. AY. Walden purchased from the AYhitnev stable, won the first event of the day handilv. It was a case of class and the stable connections profited handsomely. The stewards were called upon to act in the last race, when they disqualified High Jumper -and placed Puritan (Jirl first. At the sixteenth post Smith, on Puritan (Jirl. attempted to come through on the rail, but was shut off and interfered with. High Jumper, which swerved over in front of the liliv. causing Smith to pull up. The stewards acted promptly and High Juniper was disqualified. The track will be heavy and sticky tomorrow. If the program which trainer Howell has mapped out for the AA'illiams stable is adhered to, Firestone will not be seen in a race at Oakland this winter. Firestone's ankles have been blistered for soreness, and the Royal Flush III. colt will spend tho winter at Brentwood Stock Farm and be saved for his eastern engagements, unless President AYilliams should decide to veto his trainer's plans during the course of the winter. Another horse in the stable which will not race at tho meeting is Corn Blossom. The Abercorn horse lias been turned out for.; the winter. W. AY. Finn will only race five horses here this winter. Iteno Itebel lias gone wrong in one of his knees and both ankles, and has been fired. Dr. Soule, which Finn bought from Barnev Schreiber at the Butte meeting, is doing finely in his work, and his owner thinks he will he his best horse this- winter. It. II. Harris has sent his Jean Bercaud hay filly. Lotto- Gladstone, to E. J. Itamsey's farm, where she will be bred, later in the winter, to Sa'lvado. The work-outs on the track have been on the order of slow gallops for the last few days, but some of those today are worthy of note. Dr. Rowell made a race of a work-out when he sent Escamado. Mis-tress of Itolls and Sir Russell away together this morning for six furlougs. Kseamado finished in front in 1:101. with the other two close up. MUCH OF THE DAILY SCANDAL "IS PURELY IMAGINARY. Necessity for More Effort on the Part of Chairman August Belmont How His Former Appeal Was Made. f New York, October 2S. In the winter of 1005 and 1900, the writer was cooling his heels in the AValdorf, in company with a half dozen other tur reporters awaiting the outcome of the agitation aroused by the efforts at Albany to harass the face tracks with legislation. Recent utterances of the Rev, Dr. Slicer made it necessary to see August Belmont at his home In Thirty-fourth Street, near JIadison Avenue, to learn if he would say anything regarding the much-discussed question. Dr. Slicer had declared that bettiug at the race tracks would be shorn of much of its objectionable features, the Jockey Club stewards having promised him that they would- do all they could to cut off poolroom information and in other ways cripple betting in the city. . It was almost impossible to see any one of the Jockey Club stewards and obtain an Interview. But by the merest good fortune August Belmont was seen entering Ills home by one of the nevspaior men detailed to watch his comings and goings, and a committee at once made a rush from the Waldorf, some two blocks away, to the home of the chairman of the Jockey Club, and were fortunate enough to find him comparatively free from the incessant demands upon his time which a business man must endure. One of the reporters, however. Air. Belmont declined to talk to, and asking each of the others which paper ho represented, the great turfman checked off upon the fingers of both hands the various papers and eliminated the representative of the objectionable journal who (like a gentleman) withdrew, when he found that Air. Belmont would not consent to say anything with him as an auditor. Later on, that reporter obtained from one of his friends present, some Idea of what Mr. Belmont said. and. of course lie used it. but it appeared iu a distorted form because of the hostility between the owner of the paper and the financier.. The reporter was net to J) la me, for that. , Then followed, with Air. Belmont as the speaker, one of the most interesting talks on the then critical situation that the newspaper men had ever heard. He went on to show how tlie enemies of tlie turf were ravenous to seek any opportunity to put into a hole the person thought to be responsible for the compromise proposed to avert the pending legislation which would have crippled the turf. Tlie discretion of th6 reporters was asked as a matter of self interest, if for no other reason, he said, because each man there present lived by reporting turf matter. "This const.-wit agitation is harmful to the' institution," Air. Belmont said, "and it is only a question of a short time until there will be no races to report unless you one and all try to eliminate the features which challenge attention from tho turf's enemies. Distorted and exaggerated betting reports arq harmful. Stories about this or that race being pulled are bad. Don't you suppose that we arc on the watch all. the time for fraud j It is a dreadful thing to suffer under false charges when one is innocent, and we are bound to protect the reputation of every man connected with the tnrf if only to show that it is not tlie nest of fraud that is charged.". This, and much other matter of interest, Air. Belmont talked of, and the thinking men who composed that group of reporters felt the sense of justice which animated Mr. Belmont in his almost supplicatory remarks that the turf should not be pilloried. Just now the racing situation seems to call for another interview with tlie chairman of the Jockey Club. Charges of foul work on the turf are of almost daily occurrence. Air. Belmont's time is too valuable, and his enormous enterprises are too vital to permit him to personally attend the races more than once or twice a week. The same applies to Air. Keene. Nearly all the other stewards of the Jockey Club, however, are frequent visitors. The Hitchcocks rarely miss a day. Air. Knapp comes down often. The stewards' stand each day at Belmont Park has been occupied by two men well-verscd in racing matters, vigilant when foul riding is going on, and good judges of form, for both S. S. Howland and Harry J. Aforris, the two stewards at the meeting just closed, know as much as the average steward at. least. Both have been, and Air. Aforris still is, an owner of horses. Usually the third man in the stewards' stand has either been F. R. Hitchcock, II. B. Duryea or Thomas nitch-cock, Jr. Klsewhere, II. K. Knapp, P. J. Dwyer and Andrew Aiiller have been stewards right along. All these men are horsemen, and all know tho ins aud outs of horse racing. They know, better than the average race track visitor, the ills of horseflesh because they have been all through that. They know that a horse or a mare might one hour before a race be all right as to health, but on tho verge of a contest they know 'there might come a little change in the aspect of the animal which means defeat. A sudden increase in temperature would mean something wrong. This would not be so bad if it was seen iu time, but, unluckily for some, that change has not always been promptly detected, aud the horse runs and is badly beaten. 1 Next day there develops an illness until then not suspected. Days of anxiety for tlie trainer and owner follow. Sometimes the horse dies, more often he recovers. But the bad race he ran goes on record and the "depe-keeper's" mark-in red ink on their foot-note of tho charts: "This is not the. horse's race. Watch the betting next time." They never learn of the illness of the horse. All they know is that several weeks later, perhaps, the racer comes out fully recovered, runs his race and wins. Then they howl for somebody io be ruled, off. This is the sort of criticism that Mr. Belmont and his associates deprecate. They, beinc horse owners themselves, know the faults of horse-llesh, which are more sudden' and less easy to predict " than those which attack human beings. The poor horse cannot talk, hence, when he is ill or on the verge of it, tlie only real indication is the temperature. The moment his oats remain in the fcedbox not licked up clean, is an anxious one for the horse trainer. Tho suddenness of Roseben's Illness, which so much alarmed the whole racing world recently, was great. One Saturday night, "Dave" Johnson told Dally Racing Form's representative he was anxious to race Colin at weight for age at Belmont Park at six or seven furlongs. On the following Afonday he was plunged in gloom when Frank Weir telephoned to him that his great money-earner was In a very bad way, as tho result of having struck a stone in Ills race in the Flight Stakes at Sheepshead Bay, and blood poisoning was feared. Johnson did not appear at the track for several weeks after Roseben was so afflicted. He is now on the high tide of prosperity again and the large betting transactions attributed to Mm on Friday are true. Reverting to the turf situation, it Is day by day becoming more serious. The dally papers charge bad riding to this and to that jockey. . The Gold Lady Instance is made much of. A. Ii., Aste informally (Continued on eecond page.). X EASTERN RACING DANGER. (Continued from first page.) told the stewards that his mare was badly ridden. In the west the stewards or judges would hardly wait for an owner to complain if the bud race was run there. The faet that Knapp was in trouble in June last in Montreal comes against him now. Still, he is, when on a reel good horse, .one of the best Jockeys, especially over a distance "of ground. His work on Noalon ill the two long-distance races at Belmont Park was worth the price of admission. Nealou is so good tempered that he was easily waited with until Knapp thought It time to go on for the money. His work on Charles Edward, when that colt was at his best, could not be improved upon. Other races involving good hands and head are to the credit of Knapp on the metropolitan circuit. All this would seem to make It only fair to him to give heed to his claim that when Gold Lady was beaten, it was not his fault, though the great majority blamed him for it. J. J. Burke. Kentucky Yearlings Are Busy: Ideal Weather for Work with the Youngsters About Lexington KENTUCKY YEARLINGS ARE BUSY. Ideal Weather for Work with the Youngsters About Lexington. Lexington, Ky., October 20. These last ten or twelve October days have been ideal for the breaking and handling of yearlings and older thoroughbred horses now quartered at the local track to the number of about 150. The yearlings have all been broken, though the majority of .them, have not as yet had their trials. At the end of the next fortnight, however, It will Imj possible to determine what each and every one of them can do as to speed for an eighth or a quarter. The general health of the youngsters is good, though quite a number of them have lately been affected with a disease of the month. This has no lasting or deteriorating effect, merely delaying progress in training. These yearlings aro not, as might be supposed by many who have not seen them, all culls. More than half pf thcin are owned by men who cither bought them out of the June sales at Sheepskead Bay, or bred and reserved them for racing. Dan T. Morris has in training forty-eight head forty-three yearling and five older horses the largest string at the track. Of these, sixteen of the yearlings and three two-year-olds, are the property of R. L. Thomas and will be shipped to Los Angeles about December 1 to race at fhe new track at Arcadia. It was the intention of Mr. Thomas to race at Oakland the coming winter, but when Shilling was disciplined at Latonia by Judge -Hopper, Mr. Thomas changed his plans, cancelled his order for cars which were to have been ready November 4. and decided to race at the track in southern California, where his jockey will not have to ride under the eye of Judge nopper. The Thomas yearlings are in appearance better than an .average collection of .young racers and if they do not earn their share In the early spring in California trainer Morri3 and the local railbirds, 3fYJH Jjp ggrejy disappointed. On. leaving b.ere they i: will g'o into the careful hands of John Ireland, who selected them out of the sales ring and who comes up from Latonia every Sunday to see them. The Jist, together with the prices paid by Mr. Thomas, 'is as follows: Chestnut colt, by Star Shoot Chapter $2,200 Chestnut filly, by Star Shoot Little Mary .. 1.200 Black filly, by Sir Dixon -Maribel 1,300 Chestnut colt, by Sir Dixon Rose Vertner . . 250 Bay filly, by Sir Dixon Purity .- 1,100 Bay filly, by Sir Dixon Queen Regent 1,000 Bay filly, by Sir Dixon Donna Rica 700 Bay colt, by Sir Dixon Elopement 1,200 Bay filly, by Mnzngan Aggie Marden 700 Chestnut filly, by Mazagan Argon 500 Bay .filly, by Semp'ronius Lady Balgowan... 750 Bay colt, by Fatherless Ethle ..I... S00 Chestnut colt, by Jack Point Frone ....... 1,000 Brown (jolt, by Caldron Arabella 250 Bay colt, by Caldron Mamie Land 200 The other is a bay filly by Resolute II., which Mr; Thomas bought from the late James E. Pepper when it was a weanling. It is believed by trainer Morris that the filly by Semprouius La,dy Balgowan is the best yearling at the track. She is certainly one of the largest and there is none in any of the barns that has anything on her in looks. She worked a quarter Wednesday morning in 23? seconds and did it without the slightest effort. She is the second foal of her dam, a half-sister to Landsecr. The colt out of Chapter, while the highest priced one of his sex in the barn, is not the best looking, nor the best liked generally. The pick of the colts seems to be the dark bav fellow by Sir Dixon, out of Elopement, therefore" a half-brother to Alcedo, which, as a four-year-old. beat Ethelbert, Sidney Lucas, Blues and others in the Suburban. The filly out of Purity is a half-sister to J. C. Core. The lilly out or Queen Regent Is a half-sister to Searcher. The one out of Maribel is a half-sister to Black Mary. The colt out of Ethle is a half-brother to Ethics. Don Quixote and Rosi-nante. The two-year-olds Mr. Morris is handling for Mr. Thomas are Costly (one worth remembering), Billy Bowlegs and Courier Girl. Mr. Morris owns twelve yearlings outright and has an interest with Colonel Milton Young in another dozen. Those owned by Mr. Morris individually are: Bay filly, by Requital Iona. Brown colt, by Requital Prioress. Black colt, by Tithouus Geneva B. Brown colt, by Kinlcy Mack Merry Order. Chestnut filly, by Star Shott Hindoo Rose. Hay colt, by Ingoldsby Ilifalutiu. Bay filly, by Requital Scotty. Chestnut colt, by Star Shoot Cold Wave. Bay filly, by Requital Feline. Bay filly, by Requital Makada. Bay colt, by Bridgewater Logie. Brown filly, by Requital Trustful. In the lot owned by Colonel Young and Mr. Morris aro: Chestnut colt, by Lackford The Chough. Brown colt, by Scmpronius Tody Smith. Bay colt, by Cameron Bandy. ' Bay colt, by Scmpronius Anniel. Bay colt, by Cameron Quetta. Ray colt, by Cameron Gold Wings. Ray colt, by Alloway Retained II. Bay colt, by Monsieur do L'Orme Fidel Youlin, and four others, by Requital, Monsieur de L'Orme, Woolsthorpc and Scmpronius. He is also training Debar for Thornton Moore and Artful Dodger for ,J. S. Ward. These last named two are to be taken from here to New Orleans next month by Mr. Ward. Debar looks well arter his rest. Mr. Morris expects to take his own horses to Hot Springs after the holidays, it being generally understood hereabouts that there is a chance for racing at Oaklawn next season. Among the eight boys who are exercising the Morris horses, are two who give great promise of becoming good riders. One is the younger brother of jockey Lloyd, the good boy under contract to Amos Turney, who was injured at Fort Erie last summer. The other is a local lad named Lawrence Frasier. He is fourteen years old, weighs sixty-eight pounds and has as good a seat and hands as any beginner ever possessed, nc is a good-looking little chap and is bright and well behaved. Mr. Morris has a long-time contract on him and will give him every opportunity to advance. John Rodegap is training twenty-four yearlings for several owners. He has had them up less than thirty days and, of course, has not tried them out. W. J. Young had, in addition to his own youngsters, thirteen belonging to Colonel W. E. Apple-gate, but he shipped them to Latonia a dav or two ago and they are to go from there to California. William Steele is training twelve, of the Ken-more Farm youngsters for Julius Bauer. Oots Brothers, Colby Karr. J. D. Clayton and Walter (.rater also have stables at the track. There is a scarcity of exercise boys here and at Latonia. Edward Corrigan scoured the city for two days in search of two good bovs to send out to trainer Dave Peel, who is breaking the Corrigan yearlings at Freeland Farm, but he was unable fo get them. He finally succeeded in locating two at Harrodsbnrg. Pat Dunne is training sixteen horses at Latonia with three boys and Tom Hayes has only four to exercise about twenty head. Everybody at the local track is short-handed. The trouble is that as soon as a good exercise boy turns up in this vicinity, somebody picks him up and sends him cast. This is usually good fortune for the boy, but it is tough on the trainer who first located him and delayed taking out papers. Hopeful Stover's Ambitious Plans HOPEFUL STOVER'S AMBITIOUS PLANS Harry Stover and W. W. Finn, with others whose names have not been divulged, arc still negotiating with the officials of the Minnesota State Fair Association for the use of Exposition Park race track, situated between St. Paul and Minneapolis, for the purpose of giving a. thirty-day race meeting there next summer. The officials of the Fair Association and other prominent Minnesota citizens profess to believe that legislation which will make It possible to hold such a meeting as Siover plans, will be secured at the coming session of the Minnesota legislature at St. Paul this winter. If such a measure is enacted into law. Stover and his associates will, in all probability, be the controlling spirits of a thirty-day meeting to be held there at the close of llio Butte meeting. According to his present announced plans. Stover will be the head of quite a pretentious race circuit next year, as he intends to give a twelve or eighteen day meeting at Kenilworlh Park, Petaluma, Cal., following the close of the Oakland season. The meeting at Butte will embrace sixty racing days next year. There was a decided demand for an extension of twenty days last summer, and Stover has since regretted that it was not made. Aside from the determination to race sixty days next year, the owners of the Butte track have not definitely settled upon any plans as to the value of the stakes or overnight purses, but it is reasonably certain that there will he one stake race each week as last year, and an increase in the added money to the handicaps. The establishment of the 5,000 Four States Futurity, to be run for the first time in 1909, is an indication that the management will offer greater inducements to horsemen to race at Butte than has been done since Marcus Daly owned the Butte plant and made for it the reputation of being the best racing town of its size in the country. Barney Schreiber's Wisdom BARNEY SCHREIBER'S WISDOM. Cincinnati, O., October 2S. When here recently Barney Schrclber said that his share of Ncalon's earnings for the year totaled alKut $10,000. The half-interest In the horse that be sold to Durnell added $7,500. Schreibcr gave Dugan $1,000 for winning the Suburban. Commenting on the stallions, Adam and Rock Sand, Schreibcr said: "Adam should make a mighty fine sire, and jf I could spare the money I would try and buy him. Rock Sand was a good race horse arid' his get are a fine-looking brand, in fact too line. They remind me of the chaps just emerging from college, about to try their fortunes. Stacked alongside of those who have had many knocks and attained their knowledge from experience, the first glance will lead to. the belief that the collegian is the superior, but it isn't always so. True, the college chap has the polish and the learning, but he lacks the ability to do things, and the edge ot action. The same -way with colts. I don't like to see them too smooth or too fine.
