Rosimiro Easily Outfoots Falcada and Jubilee Berkeley Wins from Dolly Spanker 1 i Grand Consolation Prospects. c t li Washington, D. C, November 19. One of the j kaleidoscopic changes of climate for which this part of the world is noted took place today and it ( was a delightful day. The pleasant, sunshiny t afternoon was more potent in bringing out a crowd j than was the card offered for the afternoon of rac- ( lilt;. It was an off day in the matter of the pro- , gram and it was decidedly uninviting to the loveis , of the sport. The track had not dried out at post ( time as much as was expected and it was still very ( muddy. It is bound to remain in that condition for , f-cveral days yet, as the course is naturally deep. The first race resulted in a narrow victory for a . Firebrand, the odds-on favorite. He rushed into j the lead as the barrier was sprung and led by a comfortable margin until near the end, when be commenced to tire .badly and just lasted long enough 1 to win from Eminola. The latter was second choice ; in the betting and was prominent throughout, finishing very gamely under a good ride. Orfano was considered much the best in the sec- : 0111I race by the public and would probably have . won but for the bumping- he received from the 1 winner and Tenakoe. The latter, which was the i medium of a plunge by his owner and bis friends, was disqualified for fouling the winner and Orfano. . Bobbin Around, which was given third place, ran a good race, but tired slightly near the end. Hooray, a good horse of late, from the Aste stable, was the second favorite to win. He came away from bis opponents in the stretch and won With some speed in reserve, Higginbothain ran a good race, holding second place easily throughout the running, but appeared to be a trifle short at the end. Weirdsome ran surprisingly well. Falcada and Smoker had their public trials in the fourth race for the Grand Consolation next Saturday, but neither of them was able to even menace the winner, Rosimiro found the track to his liking and won without being fully extended. Falcada was most fancied and the best price obtainable against bis chances was 3 to 5 and' closed at 1 to 2. The Wilson colt bad no mishaps. The track was apparently suited to him, as be appeared to run freely in it and was under a drive all through the last furlong, but never could reach the winner. Jubilee ran another good race and held third position all the way. Smoker will probably show improvement in his next race. The mile race proved an easy task for Destroyer and his performance was comparatively as good as that of his stable mate, Right Royal, yesterday. He held a contending position from the start and was only cantering in the last quarter. Noblesse Oblige did not get away any too well, but closed up rapidly and iinished a fast going second, ten lengths in front of Llanthouy Boy, which barely saved third place from the badly ridden Grenadier. Withdrawals reduced the closing handicap to a three-horse race, in which Dolly Spanker was favorite. Berkeley showed the most speed and never left the result in doubt. Dolly Spanker loomed up at the bead of the stretch, but finally tired. Campaigner finished a distant third and quit badly after showing a Hash of early speed. The Grand Consolation still gives considerable promise of a good race. The Squire aud Falcada, which was probably not at his best today, will be the starters to make the race attractive. King Sol is also prominently mentioned. Spooner is not here for the race. Rotting is still very light. Sol Lichtenstein lias quit booking for the year, but has not left yet. He is backing them from the ground, but in a small way. Will Train at New Orleans WILL TRAIN AT NEW ORLEANS. Robert Walden will have all of the horses he will race next year at New Orleans this winter. n former years the yearlings received their earlier training at Rowling Rrook Farm and were made track wise upon a half-mile track on the farm built by the late Wyndham Walden and it was on this track that Compute, Filigrane, Contestor and Hanover Queen were given their first lessons in racing. The best of the yearlings are by the Meddler stallion, Chilton, which heads the Bowling Brook Stud and will not be raced at New Orleans, but saved until the opening of the metropolitan season. High Praise for Rowe HIGH PRAISE FOR ROWE. . Naturally James R. ICeene thinks pretty well of Jimmy Rowe, and is credited with saying recently: "I believe I have the best trainer in the country. James Rowo's skill, patience and judgment with my horses liave been remarkable, and he has made a record to be proud of. I never saw him ride, but lie was a first-class jockey in his day, and that is generally a good school for a trainer. Rowe studies each horse as a schoolmaster does a pupil, noting his or her characteristics and peculiarities. He says Colin is one of the most level-lieaded, I sensible- colts lie ever trained, and he ought to know." Adversely to the Jockey Club: Court of Inal Resort Decides in Favor of the Empire City Trotting Club ' C a at v. 1 i c t li j ( t j ( , , ( ( , . a j 1 ; : . 1 i . ADVERSELY TO THE JOCKEY CLUB. Court of Final Resort Decides in Favor of the Empire City Trotting Club. New York, November 10. The Court of Appeals Albany today handed down a decision in the Empire City case affirming the order of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court directing the State Racing Commission to issue a license to the F.mpire City Trotting Club to hold a running meeting at Youkers. This is a final determination of the case arising last March when James Butler applied to the commisison for a license, which was denied by that body. Mr. Butler, through his counsel, James Russell Soley, then applied to the Supreme Court for a writ of mandamus directed to the Racing Commission, which was denied by Justice Mills after hearing arguments by counsel for Mr. Butler and the Commission. The court at this hearing ruled that under the law the granting of licenses rested with the S'tate Racing Commission, they having discretionary power to grant licenses or withhold them, that power residing in them absolutely and could not be disturbed by the courts. An appeal was taken from this decision by Mr. Butler to the Appellate Division, and that body on June 14 issued peremptory writ of mandamus directed to the State Racing Commission to issue a license to the Empire City Trotting Club, which was done, and the probable dates for the meeting were then announced. The State Racing Commission hereupon appealed the case to the Court of Appeals.. The decision today is a final adjudication of "the matter, and while the full. text of the decision is not obtainable tonight, it appears that the contention of the Empire City Trotting Club that the Racing Commission is compelled to issue licenses to all organizations in this state which apply to the commission for a license, after complying with all of the requirements of the law, has been sustained. Varying Dispositions of Horses: Good and Bad Tempered Ones the Outcome of Kind or Harsh Treatment , , . ' ' ) ' ) j 11 ? - fe - t I" ' n e :t - 11 ;s 5- a a h e i- 1- . x VARYING DISPOSITIONS OF HORSES. Good and Bad Tempered Ones the Outcome of Kind or Harsh Treatment. C In the course of a conversation at Lexington a few days ago John B. Payne asked Major Foxhal A. Daiugerlield if Peter Pan was a horse of good disposition, whereupon the latter said: "He Is a horse of good temper and a willing disposition, as all horses should be and the majority would he with proper treatment. Gentleness and kindness are the first essentials in the care of a horse. A soft-voiced, considerate groom in a stable is worth much more than he is usually paid. The man who is given to speaking harshly to horses or striking or clubbing them finds no quarter at by Castleton Stud. I would not have a man of that kind on the place services free. While I was r, living in Virginia, and before 1 was Identified with r Mr. Kcene in his breeding enterprise, he bought , Blue Gown and several mares in England. The 0 vessel on which they were coming to this country was disabled and was adrift for twenty days. Dur- ing that period be lost Blue Gown and some of the mares. Those saved were sent on from New York and placed at the William Kinney farm, near this city, and Mr. ICeene bought Blue Mantle to t mate with them. The horse came over in charge of two English grooms, and had the reputation of j being a savaye. It was claimed that lie had killed three men. Those grooms never went about him . singly. One would go into the stall first with a j club and stand menacingly near the horse, holding the club ready to strike him, and, I am told, j often did strike him, while the other went about the process of grooming. "One day a stupid darky appeared at the farm with a request for work. The man in charge put him to watering the horses. He went from stall ' to stall, -taking each horse by the halter and lead- ing him to the trough. No one had thought to tell ' him that Blue Mantle was a savage. The negro entered Blue Mantle's stall, untied him arid led ' ' him out to the water. One of the English grooms, seeing him coming out of the stall, ran shouting for 1 ' help. But the stallion followed the negro up to the trough, drank until his thirst was quenched, looked about him complacently as the negro stroked : his inane and asked him gently if he wanted more. '' After a reasonable pause he led the horse back to 1 his stall, tied him at his rack and patted him on the side a moment before he went on to the next stall. The surprise of those Englishmen was great, and they told the man in charge of the 'remarkable happening.' The- man was wise enough to send ; the Englishmen back home, and he put the stupid, soft-voiced negro in charge of Blue Mantle. From that day on there was never any need for a club. Blue Mantle had been vicious only because his keepers had fought him. It is the nature of any man to give combat when he is assailed and so it is with the horse. The horse, like the man, is likewise amenable to good treatment. "I remember that a man named Creibel, who was a liveryman, at Ilarrisburg, Va., bought a son of Eolus, with which he expected to win some races at the fairs. He used to ride him at exercise himself, and I noticed two or three mornings in succession that the horse came in much excited, bleed- ing at the mouth, and his breast covered with bloody foam. Creibel said that the horse was a savage and uncontrollable. I told him that I thought the chief trouble was a tender mouth and rough treatment. I advised him to use a smooth hit instead of the one of twisted wire, and to let a negro boy who worked around the stable ride him. He did so, and within six weeks there was not a more gentle horse in Ilarrisburg. The liveryman sold him to a neighbor of mine, who used him as a hunter and also drove him to a buggy." The conversation now turned to the care of stal- lions, and Harry Stanhope, the man who bred Rhoda B., the dam of Orby and Rhodora, thecolt and filly with which Richard Croker this year won the English Derby and the Dewhurst Plate, re- spectively, remarked that Major Daingerfield is not a believer in high fences as inclosures for stallion paddocks. "That I am not," said the Major. "The horse in his native state is a gregarious animal, and to shut him out of all sight of his kind can serve no good purpose. At Castleton Stud the stallion paddocks are inclosed with double fences, seven feet high, and with three rails and a runner on top. This latter serves as a prbtection to the horse should he rear up and get his feet over the fence. With the double fences they set about four feet apart he cannot get to horses in the next field. We keep the mares in three fields, and they are so arranged that some of the mares are always in sight of the stallions. This does not, as I have heard some people declare, excite the stallions. It has, on the contrary, been my experience that the stallions are more quiet. When Kingston was at La Belle Stud he was kept in a paddock, sur-e rounded by a fence over which he could not see, and when he became the property of Mr. Keene, Eugene Leigh told me that he had never been able to keep him in the paddock such as we have at Cas-a tleton. I thought I would try him in one of them, anyhow. I turned him out where he could see other horses, and there he is yet, as quiet as any horse on the place. We have never had the least bit of trouble with him." Registered Horses Go Free REGISTERED HORSES GO FREE. All of the horses L. Money Muss and Nagazam Continue Winning Molesey Defeats Red Leaf Gemmell's Fast Race. J Oakland, Cal., November 19. Jockey Knapp was promptly given a license when be applied for it the California Jockey Club and rode Money Muss, the S to 5 favorite, to victory in the second race at Oakland today. The somewhat lukewarm reception accorded the much discussed" rider when he appeared on the track was quickly changed to one marked by riotously appreciative applause when he returned to the scales after making good for Money Muss backers, without even having given them a moment's uneasiness during the running of the race. The rejuvenated Corrigan, almost backed off the boards, accounted for the selling affair that came next. Nagazam, in the last, was the third public choice to score. Aside from this commonplace announcement, Herman Radtke rode the Jennings horse aud it was the former crack jockey's first winning mount in a long time. S. C. Hildreth's Wap, named after W. A. Pin-kerton, and a reputed crackerjack in private, was the first favorite to go down to defeat, but with Blond', which bolted at the start and was left at the post in the fifth, were of the receding variety and their elimination as contenders meant little or no loss to the general public. It remained for Magazine, in the Alameda Handicap, however, to work havoc with owner and racegoers alike. The crack Carman two-year-old failed to display his true form in this race, though he was carried out on the turn and there were excuses-the plenty forthcoming for him. Next to Meelick in last Saturday's fiasco Magazine was the best backed horse that has started at this meeting. Gemmell, which is a fast horse, repeated in gallant style today, running the distance of five and a half furlongs in 1:001. J. A. Bennot of New York captured two races with Green Goods and Molesey. The victory ot the last named proved costly, as TJ. Z. De Arman, laboring under the impression that he was entered below his true value at $1,000, proceeded to bid him up to $2,300 before he stopped. The owner retained Molesey with the customary $5 advance and then rotaliated by claiming J. 0. Kcene's Red Leaf, the runner-up, for $1,000. There was a slight sprinkling of rain during the day. The track was not affected. A large and financially benefited crowd witnessed improved sport. The horses that raced at the recent Butte meeting are sweeping almost everything before, them. Jockey James Carroll, who was injured from a fall on the horse Mitre last Saturday, is still unconscious. Hopes are, however, entertained for his recovery. "Silver Bill" Riley, C. J. Casey and Jockey Rosroe Coleman are recent arrivals from the east. W. O'B. Macdonough has returned from New York. His stallion, Ormondale, will bo shortly shipped to Henry T. Oxnard's farm in Virginia,, where he will do stud duty. William Cahill wired at he would be in Oakland on Thursday with his string. Big Store was badly cut down in his last race, and will not be raced for several months. Harry Stover announced today that he would give three race meetings next summer, sixty days at Butte, ten days at Anaconda and eighteen days at Petaluma. A. G. Blakeley wired Secretary P. W. Treat .that he left Omaha today with twelve horses. J. M. Lyons, one of the leading turfites on the coast, nearly died last night from the effects of ptomaine poisoning, but will recover. Bloodless Warfare at Lexington BLOODLESS WARFARE AT LEXINGTON. Lexington, Ky., November 19. Edward Corrigan and Dr. Arnold Frank came to blows in the post-office this afternoon, but neither was injured. Dr. Frank Is a German horseman who came here several ' months ago and set up an establishment for the handling of driving horses. About six weeks ago he bought a cast-ofE thoroughbred belonging to Mr. Corrigan from John Mackey. At the time Mr. Corrigan told Frank he had better look the hoo over carefully, that he might not like him. Dr. Frank, however, said the horse suited him. Last Sunday Dr. Frank tried to sell the horse to L. Blum, of Mexico. Blum discovered that he had a ringbone. Today Frank met Corrigan and told him that he wanted him to take the horse back. Corrigan declined to. The lie was passed and Frank struck Corrigan. The Master of Hawthorne sent his right to the German's jaw and was about to follow with a left swing when a bystander rushed up and called his attention to the fact that there were ladies present. The two walked away and the N scene ended. Page 2 DAILY RACING FORM PUBLISHED DAILY EXCEPT MONDAY. Mr. Carman made upward of seventy-live nominations, and Mr. Hildreth in the neighborhood oi sixty and has asked that twenty-one stalls Ikj reserved for him at the new track. Hildreth will then divide his big stable, racing part of it here this winter and the horses will arrive soon after the meeting opens. The stake horses in the striug will make special trips here for the running of some of the big stake races and then be returned to Oakland. Four hundred and twenty-one stake nominations have been received from horsemen at Oakland and it is likely that the SS0 entries made to the Ascot Park stakes last year will be eclipsed by the new organization's stake list. ' Washington, D. C., November 17. Much hotheaded talk resulted from "Joe" Notter.'s handling , of Oraculum in the Columbia Handicap yesterday at Bennlng. The boy, who on several occasions , (heretofore has ridden in much the same manner, was seen to distinctly carry out Dolly Spanker on the turn for home, then lay against him with his ', horse's head pointed diagonally across the track, and seriously bump the other. In spite of all this, Mr. Wilson's gelding recovered and came on, ! looking all over a winner until he was within fifty yards of the end, when Comedienne beat him out. Because Comedienne is trained by George Odora, who owns Oraculum, the incidents of the race brought out all the latent bad feeling on a track which needs only moderate provocation to arouse it. The metropolitan race-going public is a patient one, and seldom manifests openly its displeasure. Neither did yesterday's assemblage, made up chiefly of New Yorkers, for though many saw the rough riding, they did not make a demonstration because the aggressor was beaten. But it was when they examined their race cards and saw that Odom trains both the winner and Oraculum, that the aftermath assumed proportions of a scandal. The argument was made that the western custom of coupling in the betting all horses trained by one man, was the fairest to the- betting public and should be adopted by the layers and players in the east. The claim Was made that Oraculum had clearly knocked Dolly Spanker out of his chance of winning, and hence bis stable-trained companion should , not be permitted to benefit by it. Not that Odom had planned the rough riding, but that he benefited by it, was the .burden of the complaints. In order to help the Bennlng meeting, it has long been the custom for well-known trainers to bring on from New York in their cars horses owned by gentlemen who wish to race here, but whose trainers could not without inconvenience leave New York. Thus "Tom" Healey was in charge of Harry Payne Whitney's horses, including ' Royal Tourist, up to the hour that the stable was ordered re-shipped to New York on account of the death of Mr. Barney, an uncle by marriage of young Mr. Whitney. If this had not occurred, it was a possibility that Healey would have continued to direct the training of Royal Tourist for the Grand Consolation, the most important stake run here, notwithstanding that for his employer, Mr. R. T. Wilson, Jr., Healey also would be training Falcada for the same race. Such incidents as tills have been seen here before, but no one ever thought of making a scandal out of the matter because the . trainers have faith in each other's honesty. No one for a moment would charge George Odom with a deliberate plot to order his jockey to foul a contender with one of his horses in order to help the chances of another. Still, the foul took place, and no one regrets the damage done to Mr. Wilson's interests more than the young trainer himself. It would be a bad beginning of his career as a trainer to go before the turf world with such a blot on his reputation. The real cause of the' trouble yesterday was the "win, tie or wrangle" method of Nottcr, who, as already said in this letter, has more than once ridden just such races on New York tracks. The sooner the stewards here and in New Orleans, where he will ride during the winter, show Notter how dangerous such foul riding is to his employers' interests, the better for the men who will be paying his salary. It would be a costly. thing to Mr. Keene, for instance, some day next season, if Notter, who is to ride for him, should be disqualified after just such an incident as that of today. Miller did much to provoke official action in the season of 1900, before be was finally punished for rough riding and, without doubt, he benefited by the lesson, for in 1007, his offenses in this respect were so few or so unimportant, as to cause no gossip whatever. The same lesson taught to Notter iu time to be efficacious, would prevent a lot of trouble, not only for himself, but for his employers. It is a fact that some of the feuds of the turf owe their origin to the unchecked zeal of noted jockeys resorting to any method to win, in doing which they destroyed the chances of opposing horses. "Tod" Sloan might still be a jockey of note if lie had never left England in August of 1900 to ride Ballyhoo Bey in the Futurity and Flatbush Stakes, both of which he won, but in the latter occurred the memorable foul riding in which a Keene colt was so much interfered with that the immediate result was one of the most sensational scenes ever witnessed in or about a stewards' stand, though the auditors were few' in number. It was Sloan's zeal which precipitated this, and it may be" the fate of Notter to bring about a repetition of the regrettable affair unless the boy is given prompt notice to cease his rough riding. While the advocacy of coupling in the betting all horses trained by one man may never receive the endorsement of either the Jockey Club or of many horse owners, because of the great injustice it would work in particular instances, there is a way out of the complication which the much maligned trotting turf affords as a precedent. In certain contingencies two trotting horses trained by one man could not start in one event unless one was placed In charge of another trainer ten days before the race. Let something like this be done on the running turf, only extend the time to the morning of the day of the race, or at noon on that day. This will help to minimize the feeling that complicity existed, for it would make the trainer in charge responsible for the condition of the animal that day, the riding orders he. might give and other matters Which the rules of racing make a trainer responsible for. Then lot the jockeys of each horse be held strictly responsible for what they do in a race, and, with vigilant, but well balanced, stewards looking on, there would be little or no fault to be found. It has sometimes happened that two horses have started in a race trained by one man. One horse would be at a short price and the other at a long priee, yet the chances of the latter to win might be really as good as those of the favorite. It would be manifestly unfair to the owner of the long-priced horse to have both coupled in the betting, simply because lie chooses to put his horse in the hands of a man in whom he has faith. On the English turf there are many of the high-class trainers who handle horses for at least a dozen turfmen and frequently start two or more in a race, but there is never any scandal from this perfectly natural and proper privilege. ' J. J. Burke. Tea Tray's Meritorious Career TEA TRAY'S MERITORIOUS CAREER. Among the lilgh-class racers of fifteen or twenty years ago was Tea Tray, by Rayon d'Or Ella T. His first start in 1SS7, as a two-year-old, was in the Hudson Stakes at Gravesend, where he ran third to King Fish and Guarantee. On the next day of the taiue meeting he won a purse race ix i 1 ' , , ', ! , ' . "" . -t- & ... .. ordinary field. In his next effort he finished fourth in the Bedford Stakes, and then won the Sequence Stakes at Jerome Park a few days later from King Fish, Now or Never and Prince Royal. He won his next two starts, the May" Stakes at Gravesend and a purse race at Sheepshead Bay. A'fter ibis he failed to land a race that year, although he finished second in the Good Bye Stakes at Sheepshead Bay and third in the Autumn Stakes and the Reaper Stakes at the same course in the fall. Tea Tray took but one race as a three-year-old. After running second to Specialty in the First Special he won the Fort Hamilton Handicap at Gravesend. Although not winning again this sea son, he finished second or third in several slakes, notably among them the Withers at Jerome Park, running third to Sir Dixon and Prince Royal; third to Raceland in the Emporium Stakes at Sheepshead Bay; third in the Barnegat Stakes to Race-land and Fitz James at Monmouth; second to Prince Royal in the Jerome Stakes at Jerome. Park, and third in both the Breckenridge and Dixie Stakes at Baltimore. The four-year-old career of this gallant son of Rayon d'Or was a- grand one, In which lie annexed eleven races, many of his achievements being good performances. His first attempt was a victory in a handicap at Gravesend, defeating good horses. Then came two defeats and two wins, the latter two purses at Brighton Beach. Tea Tray's next successful effort was in the Stirrup Cup at Sheepshead Bay, -where he won pulling up by eight lengths from Barrister, his solitary opponent. Then came his victories in the Coney Island and Brighton Handicaps at Brighton Beach on successive day?. Following these wins came the Harvest Handicap at Monmouth, where he defeated the good horses Tristan, Badge and Hypocrite. September 10, 1SS9, Tea Tray was started in the fifth and sixth races at Sheepshead Bay, but failed to win either one, although he finished second in the first and ran fifth in the other. Tea Tray won the Mayflower Stakes easily by three lengths from Retrieve, and a handicap at two-mile heats, in which he vanquished his opponents by six lengths in the first heat and eight lengths in the second. His next two efforts were failures, where he finished unplaced in both, the last starts of the year. Tea Tiay started out in 1S90 with a defeat Iu the New York Jockey Club's Handicap at Gravesend by Tenny, Tristan, Badge and others of high class. In the Algeria Handicap at the same track he suffered another setback a few days later. A purse race at Sheepshead Bay, in which he beat Sir Dixon by six lengths, was his next essay. He finished second in the Bay Ridge Handicap, third in the Coney Island Cup to Firenze and Cassius and was twice unplaced before he was victorious again. Four successes in a row wound up his five-year-old racing. One of these, the Monmouth Cup, he captured, beating a grand band of opponents, including Lavinia Belle, Tristan, Prince Royal, " Los Angeles and Firenze. Tea Tray, as a six-year-old, finished third to Tenny and Prince Royal in the New York Jockey Club Handicap, it being his first start, of the season. He was not raced again for a .month, when be ran in the Suburban, finishing last n a field of ten. Raceland and Masterlode botli took bis measure in two purse races at Sheepshead Bay, he finishing second on both occasions. At Brighton Beach, on July 7, Tea Tray, Lowlander and St. Luke were pitted against each other in a dash of a mile and an eighth. Tea Tray, with 131 pounds up, anil Lowlander carrying 105, ran a dead heat. It was decided to run the race off, the result being Tea Tray first by fifteen lengths. He started twice at Sheepshead Bay in the fall and failed to win, but ran a creditable race when he finished third to Pcssara and Now or Never. Tea Tray won three races at the Brighton Beach meeting and, in his next start, he was beaten a head by Willie L. At the Sheepshead Bay fall meeting Tea Tray was successful in a good field in the Average Stakes and defeated, among others. Reckon and Kingston. Running third to MonVma and Stratluucath in the Labor Day Handicap, unplaced to Sleipner, Lowlander and Rex in a purse race and second to De Muth in the "Old Time Race" of four miles at Sheepshead Bay wound up the career of this good old campaigner. The Story of Tenny's Illustrious Career in a Time of Racing Giants. D. T. Pulsifer introduced to turf devotees in 1SSS the bay colt Tenny, by Rayon d'Or Belle of Maywood, well known afterward as the "sway-back." His career as a two-year-old w'as nothing to enthuse over, as he won but two races in seventeen starts. His two victories were in a purse race at Latonia, where he beat a mediocre band at five and a half furlongs in 1:10, and a few days later at the same track he vanquished such high-class racers as Castaway II., winner of the Brooklyn Handicap two years later, Hludbocraft and Spokane in a three-quarters dash oh a heavy track in 1:17L As a three-year-old the "swayback" had an enviable record, winning ten of his eighteen starts, finishing second in four, third In two and unplaced in two. Starting at Gravesend May 21, 1SS9, he was beaten a short head by Joe Lee after leading to the final strides. Then, after a defeat by that good racer and subsequently good sire, Long-street, he beat Major Domo and other good ones in the Fort Hamilton Handicap at Gravesend and also captured the Volunteer Handicap at Sheepshead Bay. The Realization, was the scene of a gallant struggle between Tenny and Salvator, where the latter beat him a nose after a tierce struggle at the end. Tenny's next essay was at Monmouth and resulted In a victory over such high-class thoroughbreds as Madstone, Badge, Volunteer II., Fitz James and Others. The Eatontown Stakes and Choice Stakes at Monmouth, Van Nest and Electric Stakes, and Pelham Bay Handicap at Morris Park, fell to his prowess before he suffered defeat. In the Electric Stakes he disposed of the mighty Hanover, the speedy Geraldine and Madstone, covering the three-quarters of a mile of the Eclipse Course in 1:12. Tenny then succumbed to Volunteer ,11. at Sheepshead Bay in the Speed Stakes and retrieved himself a few days later by winning the Fulton Stakes from such high-class ones as Senorita, Hin.doocraft, Come-to-Taw, Longstreet and Eric. The First Special -was the scene of a great struggle in which Kingston and Raceland iMsliec in front of Tenny. the "swayback" coming with a great burst of speed and losing second place by a head. Tenny also finished third in the Second Special, being beaten by Reporter and Los Angeles,, Reporter winning by three lengths, Los Aflgeles a neck in front of Tenny. The last two starts of the year were in the Oakland ' Stakes, which he won from Badge, Lavinia Belle, Los Angeles and others, and ihe Tidal Stakes, in which he ran unplaced, both races being at the Morris Park fall meeting. Starting as a four-year-old, Tenny won his first four races, the first being the New York Jockey Club Handicap at a mile and a quarter with 123 pounds up, running the distance In 2:071 and winning in a canter by three lengths. After this two purse races fell to his credit, then came the Westchester Cup, which he won in a canter by twelve lengths from ills solitary opponent, Sorrento, liclng at 1 to 15 in the betting. The Suburban came next for this gallant son of Rayon d'Or. In this race he had to be content with third place, Salvator and Cassius taking his measure. Such good racers as Strldeaway, Raceland, Firenze and Prince Royal finished behind him. On June 25, 1S90, the great match race at a mile and a quarter for $5,000 a side and $5,000 added, was run at Sheepshead Bay between Tenny and Salvator, his old rival. It was truly a battle royal. Salvator came away at the quarter and increased his adavntage as they turned into the homestretch. Here Tenny drew up and, under the vigorous handling of "Snapper" Garrison, just failed to get up, and was beaten a nose in one of the most exciting races ever run on the American turf. The time of the race, 2:05, stood as an American record for several years. Tenny captured the Eatontown Stakes for the second time, defeating that great race mare, Firenze, easily by two lengths at Monmouth August 2. Then Firenze turned the tables and won from Tenny by a neck, running a mile and a half in 2:33J. In the Champion Stakes at Monmouth Park Salvator again demonstrated his superiority when he defeated Tenny by four lengths, running the mile and a half in 2:35, both carrying 122 pounds. Tenny then started in a trial against time at a mile at Brighton Beach, which association offered $2,500 if Ten Broeck's record of 1:391 was beaten. The 'swayback" failed In the attempt, making the distance in 1:40, or one second slower. His last race of the year was for the Labor Day "Stakes at Sheepshead Bay, where he was victorious over Firenze, Prince Royal and Rhono. When a five-year-old Tenny duplicated his feat of the year before by winning the New York Jockey Club Handicap. Twenty horses started iu this event, of which the names of Prince Royal, Tea Tray, Banquet, Judge Morrow, Riley, Russell, Castaway II., Santiago and Senorita will be recalled as horses of high class in days gone by. Tristan, carrying 11G pounds to 129 on Tenny, beat him in the Metropolitan Handicap" this year by three-quarters of a length. Tristan's time for the mile and an eighth,. 1:51, stood for many years as a record. Tenny's next win was in the Ocean Stakes at Monmouth, where he scored over Kingston, his only opponent. Both carried 12-1 pounds. Tenny captured two more races this year, the Flight Stakes at Sheepshead Bay and the First Special at Gravesend. The latter he won iu a canter by fonr lengths. The last, year on the turf of this famous little "swayback" was not productive of much glory or money winnings. His only win was in a purse ' race at Monmouth, where he vanquished Long Beach, the only other starter. He finished second to Kingston in the Eatontown Stakes, which he had .won twice before. His last race was for a purse on the opening day of the Gravesend fall meeting, in which he ran unplaced. Then came his retirement to the stud. New Orleans, La., November 19. It has been practically decided, although no official announcement has been made, that AVilliam Shelly will do the starting pending the arrival of Mars Cassidy from New York. The original plan was for Jacob Holtman to dispatch the fields for the opening days at City Park while Cassidy was officiating at Bcn-ning. Announcement that the Santa Anita track at Arcadia, Cal. would open on ThanksgiTing Day causcd a change in plans and Shelly has been selected as substitute. The illness of Air. Cassidy's wife, whicli at present is preventing his filling his position at Bcnning, may mean that the popular official will be unable to be here this winter, and in that event Dade may be the man selected to wield the Hag for the term of racing here. Nothing definite lias been decided as to who will preside during Clarence McDowell's absence at Bcnning. AVith Shelly doing the starting another vacancy in the stand will also have to be filled. The man who will probably fill one of these positions for the present is Frank Thorpe, the New York turf correspondent, who is due to arrive here within the next few days. Air. Thorpe acted as presiding judge during the Empire City track meeting and gave satisfaction. AVith the opening of the meeting five days off stall room at both tracks is already at a premium, and Secretary Maginn is in a quandary where to quarter the late comers. To be exact, there are 1932 stalls at both tracks and all this space has been reserved and filled. One hundredxand sixty stalls have been - secured on the outside and even this number has been found inadequate. Telegrams haTC been sent by Mr. Maginn to different owners informing them of the scarcity o stables and a number of horsemen who are racing on the Texas circuit have been advised that they would be unable to find accommodations here. With close to a couple of thousand horses here it will readily be seen that the game will be far from an easy- one. Granted that seven races will be carded . daily this means that S47 races will be run this winter and that more than half the horses here will leave without winning a purse. Jockey Delaby, who cut such an important figure at the late meetings at New York, arrived this morning. He is under contract to R. E. Watkins, who will race one of the largest strings here this winter. Other arrivals of riders were Koerner, Minder, Mountain and J. II. McCormick's promising lightweight, Sumter. Notter and R. McDaniel are expected within the next few days. The horses owned by J. R. Wainwright and J. J. Marklcin got in this morning from Latonia and are quartered at City Park. Frank Brown got in this morning and expected to find his horses here on arrival but found a tel- w egram instead which informed him that his car had been stalled at the new depot at AVashington and that his stable would probably reach here tonight. A. G. Weston's lot of twelve horses arc due tomorrow, while the twenty head owned by George C. Bennett that will be raced and disposed of hero this winter are expected in tonight. Considerable sickness is prevalent at City Park and any number of horses are on the ailing list. Pat Dunne and R. A. Smith are the chief: sufferers up to the present time, each having lost a highly tried yearling. I I Commando's splendid young representatives have j given hini the posthumous honor of leading the 1 American sire list of 1007, and the further fame j of eclipsing the $2-10,500 won by the progeny ot Ilimyar in 1893. Obviously his death was a great j blow to the American turf, as was the similar early loss of his sire, Domino. But with Peter Pan ( and Colin to carry on the lino, the loss is not with- 1 out consolation. Of the living: sires the Missouri j owned S'ain is at the head, with a close race be- i tween him and Hastings for second place in the 1 sire list of the year, Sain appearing likely to hold his advantage. Iioth have many representatives in I training'and raciug at the winter tracks, but, bar- J ring Glorifier, the best of the Sains appear to j outclass Hastings' representatives, and are more 1 likely to increase Sain's advantage over his rival 3 than to permit it to diminish. There is no pros- j pect that any other stallion can menace the post- 5 tions of Sain and Hastings. 1 Star Shoot is now fourth and with quite a good representation at Xew Orleans and in California, should increase the sum to his credit materially, but not enough, to advance him above his present position, l'.en Strome has done well enough, but owing to the lack of a money winner or two of high grade, is not so well up in the list as in other j years. With the retirement of Ballot, Voter is 1 likely to be passed by several now behind him be- fore the year closes: The tables below give ac- i curately all money won by the progeny of the ten stallions now leading their competitors down to the smallest sum and should interest students of breeding, in particular: : Commando (dead), b. h, by Domino Emma C. Dally Racing Form will publish from time to time a table of the rating of the jockeys riding on American tracks, based on their performances in the saddle. The best riders will be given the uniform rating of 100, and from that point the others will be graded down according to their estimated relative skill. For a difference of five points between the jockeys, three points change in the handicap figures assigned the horses in any race must be made. Only riders frequently in the saddle will be given a place in the table.
